FR. ADRIANS CORNER

St. Francis of Assisi was an enthusias c champion of Christmas, the birthday of his leader and Lord, his inspira on and companion. In his account of St. Francis life, his fellow-friar, Thomas of Celano, who knew the saint well, says that on Christmas, St. Francis wanted the poor and hungry to be lled by the rich. He even asked that more than the usual amount of grain and hay should be given to oxen and donkeys. If I could speak to the emperor, I would ask that a general law be made that all who can should sca er corn and grain along the roads so that the birds might have an abundance of food on that day of such great solemnity, especially our sisters the larks (2Celano, 199-200). St. Francis was profoundly impressed by the simplicity and poverty of God, who entered our world as a poor person. In his exuberance and passionate love for the incarna on of God that is revealed in Jesus of Nazareth, Francis invented a drama c way to preach about this mystery. In 1223 he created the rst Christmas crib so that the people around the Italian village of Greccio could have a prac cal and personal experience of the incarna on of Jesus and what it meant for ordinary people. Thomas of Celano says that the people were so moved they wept for joy, and it seemed that Christ was born again in the hearts of those who came to the crib that cold wintry night. A er the Christmas celebra on at Greccio in 1223, the friars preached throughout Europe, using the crche to bring home the Incarna ons impact. Their preaching lead to customs that remain alive today. At Christmas me, we nd Christmas cribs or manger scenes in homes, churches, and even department store windows. We o en domes cate and sani ze the impact of these religious scenes, turning them into small Disneylands with miniature buildings and cute animals. St. Francis, on the other hand, was intent on having the people see, smell, and touch the amazing impact of Gods Incarna on in our lives. Francis intended to show that God loves seriously and generously, that we are Gods beloved. God stops at nothing to become one with us!

Though the Incarna on was an historical event, Jesus Christ is among us today in the Church, the people of God, who come together and consciously reect and ar culate their faith. And Jesus is especially present in the poor, the homeless; the emigrant who struggles to t in and adapt to the customs and language of his/her adopted country; in prisoners, in the lonely and forgo en in the li le people that our society o en overlooks and ignores. Whatever you do to the least, you do to me, He con nues to tell us today. At Christmas we remember his coming into the world as a poor and helpless child; the most innocent, the most vulnerable, the least. May the joy of Christmas stay in your heart always! May the Lord be born in you so that His light in you may shine brightly onto the world. Merry Christmas! Fr. Adrian.

Feliz Navidad! Padre Adrian Peelo, OFM Prroco Asociado
