A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHESS SETS...

Each of the sets include 32 pieces, with the exception of the Tournament Range, which comes with an extra queen in each colour. All sets are supplied in card boxes. The white pieces of all sets are made from boxwood. As natural materials vary in shade and grain, the set you receive may differ slightly in appearance. Ebony is a mature, robust wood which is black in colour. Striped Ebony has flecks of rich brown graining showing through the Ebony black. Rosewood is a reddish brown wood, with a pronounced grain. Sheesham is a very natural coloured wood, medium brown with some graining, although not as pronounced as Rosewood. Antiqued Brown or Black indicates that the pieces are made of boxwood, with the black chessmen being stained to achieve the desired effect. We also stock a range of boxes to store your pieces in - see page 8.

16 Traditional Chess Clocks

Analogue clocks are the traditional method used to time chess matches and have remained more or less unchanged since their introduction over 120 years ago. With their combination of simplicity, accuracy and old-world charm it is easy to see why they remain popular with chess players around the globe. Batteries are not needed (except with the Master Quartz Timer) as analogue timers are powered by a wind-up mechanism! Pressing the button down on your side stops your clock and starts that of your opponent. A flag will fall at the exact moment a players time has expired. However, they are less accurate than digital timers and are unable to implement advanced time controls such as increment and time delay.

Chess Clocks
ECONOMY RANGE
The ideal way to get your club up and running at the lowest cost. The timers are robust enough for use in schools.

MASTER QUARTZ TIMER ECONOMY PLASTIC TIMER

THE TURNIER RANGE

All our Turnier clocks have the same reliable precision mechanisms and come with a 1-year guarantee. Each clock is distinguished by its casing, varying from the durable Standard Turnier, to the elegant wooden clocks. Discounts are available when buying quantities of 5 or more. Dimensions: 15 x 8 x 3cm.

Digital Chess Clocks

GARDE CLOCK
59.95 each 50 each if 5+ This is the finest analogue chess clock available. Its robust casing and reliable German mechanism have such a good reputation that it was used in the Kasparov - Short World Championship match in 1993. Dimensions: 22 x 12 x 6cm

If accuracy is what you need then look no further than our broad range of Digital Chess Timers. All our digital clocks are accurate to within a second per hour and with the most extensive selection in the UK were sure to have something to suit you. Digital chess clocks have the advantage over the traditional analogue clock as they are able to handle a wider range of time controls such as as time delay and increment. Digital clocks are perfect for serious matches at clubs and tournaments or for the casual game at home. However, they really show their worth in blitz games and time-scrambles, where knowing exactly how much time you have remaining can make all the difference! As they dont function on a wind-up system like analogue clocks they need batteries, although a set of 2 AA batteries can last an incredible eight years (based on a usage of 4 hours per week).

Killer Endgames (DVD) - Nick Pert - 24.95 per volume 45 for Volumes 1 and 2 Running time: 5 hours per volume
Chess players have a tendency to focus mainly on improving their opening play but one must not forget that many games are actually decided in the endgame. Ginger GM has released two new endgame DVDs that will enhance a players performance in this particular area of the game. Using his wealth of knowledge and expertise, Grandmaster Nick Pert presents a series of lessons, categorised according to rating, that are designed to familiarise players with endgame theory. Puzzles are included at the end of each chapter to test what has been learnt.

Volume 1: Beginner to Intermediate (0 to 1800 Elo)

Volume 2: Intermediate to Advanced (1800 to 2400 Elo)

Killer Grand Prix (DVD) - Gawain Jones - 24.95 Running time: 5.5 hours

However, alternative lines are also given for those players wishing to shy away from the reams of theory associated with this opening. The second DVD in this two-part series focuses on the Dragadorf variation where never seen before ideas are presented. The classical lines of the Dragon are also explored.

Killer c3 Sicilian (DVD) - Sam Collins - 19.95 Running time: 4.5 hours
Over the years, the c3 Sicilian, otherwise known as the Alapin variation, has become increasingly popular not least because it avoids the reams of theory associated with Open Sicilians, but also because it offers White flexibility. Indeed, the positions that arise from this opening can be either tactical or positional and are therefore suitable for chess players of all styles and strengths. Follow International Master and former Irish Champion Sam Collins as he explains the fundamental principles and ideas behind this fascinating opening.

Garry Kasparov: My Story

Presented by Garry Kasparov & GM James Plaskett Part 1: Teenage Prodigy (104 mins) 19.95 By age 12 Garry was the youngest ever Junior Champion of the USSR. Back then fashion bowed to the safety-first style of reigning world champion, Karpov. Kasparovs style - brash, energetic and aggressive took the chess world by storm and became the standard for future generations of chess players. Part 2: Joining the Elite (113 mins) 19.95 By 1981, though still a tender 18 years of age, his ferocious talent demanded that he clear ever-higher hurdles. Now it was time to take on the grown-ups, and for him this meant one thing - the world elite. Part 3: Rebels and Renegades (86 mins) 19.95 A close look at Kasparov's career reveals a remarkable amount of brinkmanship. At a time when the Soviet Union was wired with paranoia and the winds of political change were beginning to stir, the brash Kasparov manoeuvred to be in the right place at the right time to capitalise on the new climate. Part Four: Hitting the Wall (110 mins) 19.95 The shadows of political intrigue would threaten to do what no chess player could manage - to eliminate Garry from the hunt for the World title. And when the long awaited confrontation between Karpov and Kasparov arrived, it turned out to be the most remarkable and controversial match ever played. Part Five: Rite of Passage (89 mins) 19.95 On the eve of the most important game he would ever play, Kasparov sought the advice of legends Botvinnik and Tal. If Kasparov succeeded, he would take Tal's place as the youngest World Champion in history. Kasparov: My Story - All 5 DVDs 79.95 SAVE NEARLY 20% (RRP 99.75)

RYBKA 4 (PC-DVD) 44.95

Rybka 4 is the worlds strongest chess program having won the 2008 World Computer Championship and leading all ranking lists by over 100 elo points, but strength is not everything! Today the main use of chess software is analysis and Rybkas analysis features coupled with its awesome playing strength make it the number one choice for the serious chess player. Using an earlier version of the Fritz interface Rybka introduces several ground-breaking new analysis features: Monte Carlo Analysis yields precise evaluations by playing thousands of ultra-fast games in a few minutes from any given position. This is much like using game result statistics, something human players do when choosing their opening variations. Monte Carlo Analysis can be used in any position, but generally it's most useful in endgames and positions with sacrificial possibilities. Engines often give high scores to drawn endgames, Monte Carlo recognises fortresses and other no-progress situations, giving a much more accurate assessment of a position than other engines. It is also useful in positions where one side has made a material sacrifice for slow compensation (i.e. not just for combinative reasons). Sampled Search gives information about the search process, showing scores and alternative variations from the main line. This is helpful when the program searches for a long time in one position, allowing the user to see how the engine is thinking and making its decisions. Singular Moves are annotated graphically. This indicates situations where only one clearly best move exists. Look For Win is used whenever you feel that there should be a forced win in a position you can explicitly ask for it. Rybka then searches for a decisive move, considerably faster than in normal analysis. Persistent Hash Rybka can save its hash tables between analysis sessions to preserve valuable information already accumulated in the search tree.

DEEP RYBKA 4 89.95 (PC-DVD) is the multiprocessor version of Rybka 4. The program will run on a PC which has multiple processors/multiple cores, harnessing the
machines additional hardware to speed up the programs chess calculation. Running on an Intel Core 2 duo system, Deep Rybka 4 will calculate at roughly twice the rate of a single-processor system. This is particularly useful when analysing a large numbers of positions, researching new moves in an opening variation, or analysing a single position in detail with a number of candidate moves. Deep Rybka is at least 50 points stronger than its single-processor counterpart running on the same hardware.

Fritz Powerbooks 2011(DVD) 44.95

Fritz Powerbooks can be used by both Fritz and Rybka and is designed to enhance their opening repertoire or to study opening lines from. Contains over 30 million opening positions, derived from over 1.5 million quality games. The source games are also included so you can see how the games continued from any position! Discover new lines to revamp your repertoire and then practice them against your Chess program.

Rybka Book (CD) 24.95

The same format as the Powerbooks (see left), Rybka Book was developed to maximise Rybkas playing strength. The choice of opening lines has been matched to the style of the program. The value of the book lies in its original analysis and move choices, which has led to a re-evaluation of certain lines in modern theory, all of which have never been published before.

Endgame Turbo 3 (DVD) 44.95

Consists of 9 DVDs of endgame databases allowing your chess program to play all five-piece and most six-piece endgames perfectly. Likewise, it will handle endgames with more than six pieces much better since the program can access this endgame knowledge during its analysis. A must-have for correspondence players, endgame theoreticians and fans of engine matches.

1001 Deadly Checkmates
John Nunn 15.99 By focusing exclusively on positions from real games, ranging from junior events to grandmaster encounters, Nunn ensures that the mates featured are those which arise most often in real life. He also highlights themes and ideas that are often missed in practice. While solving these puzzles, your 'mental library' of patterns will grow, leading to an immediate increase in your playing strength. All 1001 puzzle positions have been carefully checked, and are graded by theme and difficulty. Points are awarded for finding the checkmate, so you can measure your skill. Most of the puzzles are suitable for junior and improving players. 101 Chess Endgame Tips 101 Chess Opening Traps 101 Chess Questions Answered 101 Winning Chess Strategies 365 Ways to Checkmate 50 Essential Chess Lessons 50 Ways to Win at Chess A Course in Chess Tactics A Killer Opening Repertoire Giddins Giddins Giddins 11.99 10.99 13.99 Dunnington 12.99 Gallagher 13.99 Giddins 14.99 Giddins 14.99 Bojkov 14.99 Summerscale 12.99

Understanding Chess Middlegames

John Nunn 15.99 Following on from his successful Understanding Chess Endgames, John Nunn turns his attention to the middlegame - the phase in chess where most games are decided, yet the one that has received the least systematic treatment from chess writers. With the outstanding clarity for which he is famous, Nunn breaks down the middglegame into 100 bitesized lessons. Each lesson features two inspiring examples from modern chess. Both sides' ideas are emphasised, so we get a clear picture of the ways to disrupt typical plans as well as how to form them. Koltanowski Phoenix Attack

The Future of the c3 Colle David Rudel 15.99 In his earlier book for Colle Players, The Moment of Zuke, David Rudel wrote that the main line of the c3Colle was a dead end for White. He proposed a new idea, meeting 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.e3 e6 4.Nbd2 c5 5.c3 Nc6 6.Bd3 Bd6 7.O-O O-O with 8.dxc5 Bxc5 9.b4!, a line he dubbed the Koltanowski-Phoenix Attack. Rudel promised to write a treatise on this new idea, andtwo years laterhe has delivered. This new title gives extensive coverage of all critical defenses.Yet its presentation allows a player to begin using the Koltanowski-Phoenix almost immediately. Magic! New York 1927

Alexander Alekhine 14.99 Alekhine's controversial masterpiece finally in English! For decades, Alekhine's account of the New York tournament was at the top of a list of chess books that had never been translated into English. Not only do you have one of the greatest annotators of all time rendering some brilliant analysis, but he melds it with an exceptional agenda, an antiCapablanca agenda. And since he wrote it after defeating Capablanca in their marathon match, he sounds like a sore loser who became a sore winner. Endgame: Bobby Fischer's Remarkable Rise and Fall Frank Brady 17.99
Endgame is acclaimed biographer Frank Bradys decades-in-the-making tracing of the meteoric ascentand confounding descentof enigmatic genius Bobby Fischer. Only Brady, who met Fischer when the prodigy was only 10 and shared with him some of his most dramatic triumphs, could have written this book, which has much to say about the nature of American celebrity and the distorting effects of fame. Drawing from Fischer family archives, recently released FBI files, and Bobbys own emails, this account is unique in chronicling all of Fischers life and playing career.
