Christmas in EV generally peaceful - Soria

CAMP KANGLEON, Palo, Leyte The Christmas celebrations in Eastern Visayas was generally peaceful except for two fire incidents on Christmas eve and a burglary incident monitored by the police, Regional Director Police Chief Superintendent Elmer Ragadio Soria said. While the people in the region are enjoying the Christmas eve and Christmas day celebrations with their families and loved ones, our policemen were on duty patrolling the streets so that our citizens can celebrate and enjoy the holidays peacefully, Soria added. Soria noted the only incident that marred Christmas Day was a burglary in a parish convent in Tacloban City and two separate fires that hit a residential house in Tacloban City and public market of Can-avid in Eastern Samar. The regions top police official has ordered a massive hunt for the thieves who carted away the personal belongings of Rev. Fr. Aaron Quilanita of Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Parish along Maharlika Highway in Brgy. 78, Marasbaras, Tacloban City. Investigators disclosed that the suspects may have entered between 1:00 o clock to 3:00 o clock in the morning of December 25 by bending the window grills of the parish convent. When the suspect/s were already inside, they went to experience some rains which could still trigger landslide or flooding incidents. Gozon, who is also the regional director of the Office of Civil Defense, said that by being alert, damage to properties and loss to lives could be averted. The people should heed informations from the authorities as these informations are for their safety, Gozon said. With an improved weather, flights going Tacloban to Manila were not cancelled, according to the second floor and since the room of the Parish Priest was locked, they opened the sliding door leading to the terrace and using the cantilever on the side, went to the window of the room of Fr. Quilanita, bended the welded portion of the window grills and from there gain entry to the room. The burglars carted away one unit Apple laptop computer worth P60,000.00; four wristwatches branded Fossil, Bullova, Mossimo and Dilligaf wristwatch; one unit LCD projector and two mobile phones. In Sunnyville Subdivision in Manlurip, Brgy. San Jose also in Tacloban City, fire hit the house of Central Bank employee Allen Boquin at around to a report from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines. Based on the monitoring of the Coast Guard as of 10 a.m.on Wednesday,50 passengers were stranded at Balwarteco port in Allen, Northern Samar with four passanger vessels;15 cargo trucks and 13 buses. Meantime, the Coast Guard in Maasin City, which covers Southern Leyte and western part of Leyte, said that 522 passengers were stranded since Christmas Day. Seawoman II Ger7:30 in the evening of Christmas eve, damaging the kitchen with an estimated P50,000 worth of damages. Earlier that day, fire also hit the rear portion of Can-avid Public market in Eastern Samar with estimated damages amounting to two million pesos. Soria said earlier that though PRO8 had not monitored any security threats during the Yuletide season, it raised its security alert status to ensure a peaceful Yuletide celebration. We will also conduct crackdown on the sale of illegal firecrackers and pyrotechnics to prevent injuries and incidents as the New Years celebrations draws near, Soria said. (PINSP ROMUEL NACAR) maine Montezon said that as of 9 a.m., 130 passengers are stranded at the port of Bato, Leyte with two vessels and three rolling cargoes. At the port of Liloan, Southern Leyte,316 passengers remain at the said port along with two vessels and 17 rolling cargoes. NYC asks support from RDC-8 on PYDP

TACLOBAN CITY The National Youth Commission is soliciting the support of the Eastern Visayas Regional Development Council (RDC) on the adoption of the Philippine Youth Development Plan (PYDP) for 2012 to 2016. The RDCs Social Development Committee recently endorsed the five-year plan for deliberation in RDC meetings next year. The measure calls for government agencies to mainstream PYDP in their programs, projects, and activities. This is a product of regional and national consultations that involved the local government units, national government agencies, private sector, and registered youth organizations nationwide, said NYC Commissioner Erwin Andaya. Andaya said that endorsement from RDCs is a big boost to their advocacy for convergence of program implementer at the national and local levels. The plan aims to achieve improved enabling conditions for youth participation in governance, society and development; increased contribution of and benefit for the youth in the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals; and improved access to quality basic services and social protection. Republic 8044 calls for the establishment of a national comprehensive and coordinated program on youth development, which includes the formulation and implementation of Youth Development Plan, which complements the Philippine Development Plan.

Mind what you eat

hristmas and New Year are like twin celebrations held in a row during both of which people prepare abundant and sumptuous foods on their tables to greet the two events. It is then during this time that people could eat to their hearts content, end up in the hospital, or even die of gluttony if moderation is not observed. Since not all foods are good for ones health as some could even ruin it, people with particular diseases and are disallowed to eat certain foods should guard themselves against those. They should not give in to the lure of delicious foods whose intake would just bring them harm than good. They should avoid them as much as possible or else they might impair their health and drain their pockets. For sure, the holiday season should be for ones enjoyment and relaxation together with friends

and loved ones. But if one is not careful enough, the food-laden festivities could trigger some illness attacks. Foods with high cholesterol content, or uric acid, or sugar, etc., can aggravate existing ailments that, if not cured right away, can threaten ones life. Whats the use of celebrating the occasions when one would just end up sick in bed as a result? How unwise it is, and what a waste, when money is unnecessarily spent on something that results from carelessness. When you know that you ought not to touch a certain food or drink per doctors advice yet you still touch it, it is sheer stubbornness; and if you have to spend money for medication because of that, then thats your fault because, in the first place, it could have been avoided. page5

from page 4 the people whom they serve. Just as I had predicted, Leyte Metropolitan Water District gave its most wonderful present the other day (Dec.25) to Taclobanons: water from faucets that found its way to washing and cooking areas inside Tacloban homes. Actually, there was enough daytime water pressure since Dec. 23, except that it was much stronger on Christmas Day. My younger son, a private bank employee who, like me, wants water always within reach, was all smiles as he let the water from the faucet outside our house fill the wide basins for his laundering schedule. Then he jokingly or was it quizzically commented that perhaps someone big at LMWD is giving me tips about good water service schedules that I could guess right that good service which LMWD can always be capable of delivering. I riposted, I have a strong feeling that LMWD will let this stay until the first week of January, 2013, after I told him that I had not been to the LMWD in the past 20 days and that neither had I been talked to by anyone from this quasi-government water utility agency. By 1to 2 p.m. of Christmas Day, flood water filled the lower half portion of the interior road of Brgy. 5, brought about by the typhoon-connected (Quinta, the 17th typhoon to visit the Philippines in 2012) rain. It rose to as high as 10 inches. Since it was low tide in the highly urbanized city of the Waray Region, flood eventually receded, but slight intermittent showers after 2 p.m. kept the concrete road wet and untidy. Time to watch Enteng Kabisote!, my younger son exclaimed by 4 p.m., and off his own family went, to Robinsons Place where, he told me earlier, Vic Sottos and Bong Revillas were being exhibited in that malls theatres in time for the first-day exhibitions of the movie, which also features the child dancing sensation discovered by Eat Bulaga, in all the main theatres nationwide. *** My email inbox yielded the following messages last Tuesday afternoon, sent in by avid QN readers: UNITED EMPLOYEES OF CITY SAVINGS BANK (UECSB UNION) CBA SIGNING AT QUEST HOTEL CEBU CITY LAST DECEMBER 13 A SUCCESS: Congratulations to all members of the United Employees of City Savings Bank (UECSB), a labor organization duly registered with the Department of Labor and Employment, with address at Aviles Street, Ormoc City, Philippines, and with Certificate of Registration No. DOLE-WLFO-2009-12-UR-004 issued by the DOLE This bank employees union had just negotiated with the CSB management a collective bargaining agreement that, while being beneficial to all union members nationwide, is also expressive of the deep concern of the CSB for the welfare of its employees. A Sea Vegetable Gamet named RP President recommended for Sea Farming

High-Powered Objective
(S & T Enhanced Nations Have Edge)
Dr. paciente cordero, jr.

A new species of gamet, Porphyra marcosii, has been discovered and named in honor of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, who hails from the type locality of the seaweed. The gamet, which has now three different species (belong to the group of red algae or Class Rhodophyceae), is popularly eaten as a salad preparation. Its food use is, however, unknown in most parts of the Philippines because they are found only in the colder waters of Northern Luzon. Porphyra prefer to grow in temperate regions and in cold areas of the world. They occur seasonally, in a very limited area, particularly in the northwestern coast of Ilocos Norte and in some

rocky islets off the coast of northeastern Aparri, Cagayan. In the Philippines, species of gamet abound during the cold months of December to February, and at such times when the sea becomes tempestuous in the said localities. Then, they disappear just as the cold season ends and the sea becomes calm with the advent of summer. They are also obliterated during the rainy days. Named Porphyra marcosii by its author, DR. PACIENTE A. CORDERO, JR., Marine Biologist and Executive Director, National Research Council of the Philippines DOST, this red edible seaweed appropriately called as sea vegetable, which hitherto was unknown to science, is an

addition to two other species, Porphyra crispata and Porphyra suborbiculata, found in the country. The specimens of P. marcosii were initially collected in January 1969 in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. For sometime, its identity remained puzzling to botanists of the Philippine National Herbarium, Philippine National Museum. Fortunately, a grant-in-aid from the National Research Council of the Philippines and a MOMBUSHO Scholarship to Japan for a Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Phycology enabled Dr. Cordero, then a marine biologist of the Philippine National Museum, to do critical study on and compare with the different species of Porphyra richly represented in Japanese waters, some kept as pickled or dried herbarium materials. The species of gamet grows on ledge-like formation of jagged rocks which are intermittently sprayed by the waves when sea is rough. One can hardly walk or run on

THE EMPTY TOMB

On the first day of the week Mary of Magdala ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we dont know where they put him. So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed.

THE PASTORS SECRET

Everybody sees different things in different ways. Once I was staying as a guest of my friends John and Ellen at their summer house near a popular vacation spot on the water. One day I accompanied Ellen on a shopping trip to buy John a present for his birthday. While in town, we bump into a couple of my parishioners who happened to be vacationing nearby. We exchanged greetings, introductions, and pleasantries, and continued our way. A week later, the parishioners who had seen me with Ellen confided in me after Mass on Sunday that my secret was safe with them; they would tell no one of the encounter. People believe what they want to believe. The other disciple in the story saw the same thing Mary Mgdalene saw; yet he believed something very different. Prayer: O God, when I look at the events of my day, I know you are blessing me. But sometimes it seems as if you are doing bad things to me. Heal my blindness, Lord. Help me to see the truth of your love for me. Action: Write down three reasons why you believe that Christ is risen from the dead. What do you see that makes you believe? (Between Sundays by Paul Boudreau, published by Paulines. Visit us at www.paulines.ph or at Paulines Media Center, Real St., Tacloban City. Tel. #321-31-95) Sowers Seeds: For those who love in the true sense there is no action that is useless or commonplace, since genuine and deep love of God gives even obscure and insignificant actions the value of gold. -Blessed James Alberione, Founder of the Pauline Family A Love-filled Christmas to all!

Happy holidays

Things To Mind
doms pagliawan What are the fringe benefits of the yuletide season comprising of Christmas and, to many peoples mind, the New Year otherwise known as the holidays? Well, there are quite many, depending on how creative and how initiative the concerned people are. Of these multiple benefits, however, nothing beats that chance which allows people to have bonding with loved ones. These may include neighbors, acquaintances, friends, relatives, and most of all, family members. Extending for days, the holiday season does provide them with enough time to get together, to enjoys one anothers company, to play games and have fun, to cry over some problems if need be, and to get to know how everybody is doing. Such a moment is very vital if we are to consider the close family ties that Filipinos have had for generations, as part of their culture. For centuries, this has been made possible in part by quality time

spent together around dinners, around finger foods, around local wines such as lambanog or coconut juice called tuba, or simply around local songs sang together to the accompaniment of indigenous musical instruments. This close family ties instinctively prevails among Filipino families like a built-in propensity. One need not teach each member, even the young ones, regarding the necessity of preserving family traditionsthey automatically do so. Amid this closeness, however, there is this threat of separation brought about by distance that eventually settles in between members in the course of time. Going places just cannot be helped and this, to some extent, causes family closeness to deteriorate.

At least, warning has been given; you just ignored it. When these twin celebrations then come our way, better heed the advice of medical experts regarding what not to eat. Failure to take this into account could mean suffering instead of enjoyment. It pays to guard your health, your wealth.

Prayer for the Nation and for Those who Serve in Public Ofce
God, our Father, you guide everything in wisdom and love. Accept the prayers we offer for our nation; by the wisdom of our leaders and integrity of our citizens, may harmony and justice be secured and may there be lasting prosperity and peace. Almighty and eternal God, You know the longings of our hearts and You protect our rights. In your goodness, watch over those in authority, so that people everywhere may enjoy freedom, security and peace. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. (Courtesy of Daughters of St. Paul)

Porphyra species, P. marcosii, averaging 12-14 centimeters height, is the tallest and therefore recommended for sea farming for ease/convenience in harvesting by pruning. To the Ilokanos, Porphyra or gamet, eaten fresh or dried as salad, is rich in digestible protein. Its protein content is higher than rice or soybeans and very close to horsemeat in protein value. Some members though would prefer to rather live elsewhere, away from their relatives so as to preserve good relations. They reckon that when they just live in clustered houses, they run the risk of occasionally irritating one another over trifles such as the quarrels of their children that could worsen into adult fights or worse. To avoid such friction, prudent family members would rather that they stay away from one another so that, when they meet after years of being away, they would have love-filled hugs and boisterous laughter. Thanks to the holiday season that could allow such reunion of distant family members to happen. The time may be rather short, but it is full of joy and

excitement, more so that the so-called spirit of Christmas is in the air. The party for all, the exchanging of gifts, the joyful greetings, and the excitement of being together is such a precious moment so unforgettable for being rare and exciting indeed. No matter what, it is in this holiday season that we enjoy the presence of loved ones and therefore feel contentment of loving and being loved. That makes ones Christmas merry, and ones New Year, happy. Loved ones still determine our feelings this season, thanks to the thing called family. Thank God for creating it. Happy New Year to one and all!
