An Evening of One Acts will present three plays per performance, sharing Center Stage at the Birdcage Theatre opening January 17 through January 27. The plays, in order of performance: a dramatic satire by Richard Elder Adams, Treachery of Honesty; The Actors Nightmare, a comedy by Sara Christopher Durang and No Exit, a one-act drama by Jean-Paul Satre. Treachery of Honesty, is a perfect opening play showcasing veteran actresses, Kim Basinger and Katy Ryan who portray two cast-off operatic divas. They start colliding as they expose their pasts, hopes, dreams and failures and plunge into a realm of insanity as witnessed by a student, Samantha Sanz. It is Directed by Herman Tuider and Assistant Director Wade Gess. In The Actors Nightmare, George (James Gull) a young man finds himself transported to backstage at a theatre ready to open a new production. Unable to remember being an understudy to the lead actor in a play and oblivious even to the plays plot, George is forced by circumstances to take the leads place. One follows Georges struggles to fill the role and to determine if he is dreaming. Dreaming, he decides, taking a leap of faith as he plays his final role

This play hosts a cast of seasoned actors who include Samantha Sanz, Shane Gable, and Mayra Carmona. No Exit is a voyage into the dark realms of the philosophy of existentialism. The play details the interactions of three people, Garcin (Kyle Wood), Inez (Barbara Rocchi ), and Estelle (Jennifer Horn), who are confined within a room in Hell ushered in by a Valet (Mark Fitzgerald). It is an exploration of Sartres philosophical themes and issues surrounding human freedom and responsibility. Directed by Sean Plummer with Assistant Director Susan Eisenberg, No Exit may not be appropriate for all audience members, due to content and language. Opening January 17th through January 27th, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and preteens are $7. Meanwhile, Jean dove into local politics with her typical verve and enthusiasm and joined the National Womens Political Caucus, eventually becoming the Vice Chair of the local chapter. At conventions and pursue leadership positions in business, education, and politics; the Soroptimists, where she was a member for many years and served as President; and the Oroville Wyandotte Irrigation District, where she was elected to four fouryear terms as a board director. During her years at OWID (now the South Feather Water and Power Agency), she fought one of her celebrated political battles. Mismanagement and fiscal irresponsibility was rampant and as a concerned citizen Jean and his cronies lost the battle. Jean then took charge of finding his replacement. Although four interviews were scheduled, after the first one, which happened to be with Mike Glaze, they knew that he was the one to take over the reins. Hes been so successful at managing the district that hes still on the job! After closing Kampong Garden Center, when most men retire to play golf or pursue some other recreational activity, Les continued applying his considerable creative talents. Although the local chapter was successful at encouraging women to pursue political office (Jane Dolan, current Supervisor, Butte County, District 2, is a former member), by the time Ronald Reagan came into the Presidency many of the liberal and progressive women were losing heart and the chapter closed from lack of local support. But that didnt stop Jean. She joined the Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the board for many years; the Western Interstate Conference on Womens Education, an organization that provided encouragement and scholarships to promising young women in order to further their education

Everywhere your eye falls in the cozy home that he and Jean have created, there is one of his exquisite pieces of art, or a framed photo by Jean, or one of the many pieces theyve collected in their travels, southwestern vases, painted gourds, sculpture of all kinds. Jean developed quite a talent for her

In addition, he has created whimsical stained glass mobiles and wall hangings, and metal sculptures, such as the fish and praying mantis that grace the pool area of family members homes. For many years he was a very active member of the California Blacksmithing Association, traveling all over California demonstrating and teaching black-
photography and took most of the photographs that decorate the walls of their home. In honor of her and Les 50th anniversary, 107 friends and acquaintances donated to a fund administered by Wendys Frame Shop to have those photographs professionally matted and framed. The outpouring of generosity was so huge that not only were all of the photos framed and put on display at the party, there was enough money left over to present Les and Jean with a check at the celebration. The proprietor of the frame shop said later that she had never before been part of something so wonderful. Another group of friends gifted them with a trip to tour the southwest. The photos Jean took of that trip form the foundation of a striking framed collage that hangs in their guest room.

Les and Jean have slowed down a bit, but Jean still receives the monthly irrigation district board agenda packet and she attends as many meetings as she can. In 2011 Les completed a triptych of lighted art deco-style stained glass boxes in beautifully finished wooden frames. The glow of the softly lighted glass adorns the far living room wall, just above the metal sculpture of a roadrunner, also one of his creations. With over 62 years of marriage and community service behind them, they have managed to weave together a rich and adventurous life. And as a niece said at her own wedding in acknowledging the role that Les and Jean have played in her life, their life partnership is a model to everyone of a loving, productive, successful marriage. And theyve done it, as always, both then and now, side by side.

Lots of cars passing. After awhile I get bored and go back to my bed. Great to be home, but it is still hot out! No grass yet, it is being reseeded, so no golfers to watch. Just the guys working on the golf course grass. They are really busy every day. I run back and forth in my yard with the big machines. One guy calls me Luigi! I stay inside during most of the day, but at night I go out to enjoy the evening. Cant go to run on the course, cause they are seeding it; cant go to the dog park, cause they are reseeding it, too! Life gets boring this time of year. None of my friends are here yet, because they arrive a little later in the year. Mom says they are snow birds! Even though they are dogs, they are birds! Huh? My new trick is to stay on the couch at night and not go to my room. When mom says time to go nitey nite, I run under her bed and wont come out! After she goes to sleep, I crawl out and go to sleep in Dads chair. Wow, if I had known this would work, I would have done it sooner! Well, this is not always a good thing, I have found out. Last night I wandered into their bedroom and slept on the floor. Dad got up to go to the bathroom, and stepped on me! Ouch! Cant he see me? I guess his night vision is not like mine. He needs to use his flashlight, if he wants to wander around at night. So the next night I stayed in the living room. But when the sun comes up, I go into the bedroom, and try to wake Mom up! I shake my head and she hears my ears flap! Works sometimes, sometimes not. But when she hears me, she gets up and opens the door for me to go out. Its nice out at 6 a.m. Not so for Mom though! She goes back to bed. Well, I have been doing this for a couple of weeks now, and Dad put the baby gate up across their door so I would not go into their room at night. Well he opened it the other night, and I went in while he was getting a drink of milk! Whoa, I got a talking to then! Mom woke up, too. Busted. So the next night, Mom picked me up and back to my room I went! Rats, I liked sleeping in the living room. Mom said I was a brat. I was awake at dawn, and in my room there are no windows so I cant see when the sun comes up! I am at their mercy. When Mom or Dad gets up, then I get up, not the other way around. So my nights of freedom are over. Its back to my room. Even if I hide under the bed, she reaches in and pulls me out and takes me to my room. Finally, the grass on the course is growing nicely, ours too, and the golfers are back! The first day four came over and said hi to me. I missed my buddies. They all come over to the fence and give me a pet. Some even let me lick them hello. Life is good again since the weather is cooling downthat is to say it is in the 80s. Just perfect. And Mom can now take me for a run at night! I just love to run on the golf course at night. No one there, cool weather, and I get to fly on nice soft grass! Does it get any better? Boy, oh boy, did I have an experience today! I caught a mouse! Mom was fiddling around in the courtyard with her plants, and out pops a field mouse. Well she went into the house to tell Dad. When she went back outside to show him, I went along. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted something running under the bushes, I ran after it. It ducked behind the fountain! Hah! It thought it would outsmart me, but I ran to the other side of the fountain, and when the mouse came around the corner, guess who was waiting for it! ME! I caught it, and Mom saw me. She said, Drop it! And I did. I guess I maimed it or shocked it, one of the two, and mom put a rake on top of it and Dad smashed it and into the garbage can it went! Wow, I am now the talk of the neighborhood. No need for a cat in this family! I want to wish you all a good and healthy New Year and say goodbye.
