Thachu shasttra Thachu shastra is an ancient science which helps one to get the natural benefits freely offered

by the five basic elements of the universe in which we all live. These basic elements are Akash (SKY), Prithvi (EARTH), Paani (WATER), Agni (FIRE), and Vayu (WIND). Thachu Shastra can be applied by keeping in harmony with these basic five elements of nature. It is an edifice science that was developed by our learned people thousands of years ago. Its application today is purely architectural and its principles are based on becoming one with nature. Like astrology and palmistry it is a vast & complicated science, easily misunderstood by most people. Most people all over the world will not think twice before spending huge amounts of cash on designing their houses and they should rightly do so. But when the house does not bring them peace and harmony and instead the ill effects of thachu are experienced the same people consult astrologers, palmists, tarot card readers and some blame their destiny or luck. Thachu is essentially the art of correct settings one can place himself in such a manner as to derive maximum benefits. The ancient relics say that Thachu is based on two forces "positive" and "negative" which are constantly interacting with each other on the surface of the land. These forces should get disturbed whenever any structure is erected on a vacant land, to maintain a balance. If there are more positive energies (forces) than the negative energies, the result of such a construction would yield more benefits to the inmates leading to a more successful, healthy, wealthy and peaceful life, contrary to this if the negative energies dominate the premises the effects could be negative.
If you're building your home, the Thachu shastra advises to keep the following in mind

Site The length of the land should not be more than twice the breadth. The land should not be too porous i.e. should not absorb water very fast. The slope of the land should be such that water flows towards North-East. The slope of the roof should be such that water should flow towards North or East. The house should not be constructed on the land which is a dead end. Select a site where the land is fertile and not dry and rocky. Avoid water logged land or land at the end of a road. Avoid land too close to graveyards, cemeteries, hospitals, etc... Ideally the plot should be rectangular or square in shape. Square is best. If it is a rectangle, the ratio of length to breadth should be 1:1.5 Natural features

Plots should be with higher levels in the South & West and lower levels in the North and East. Water bodies like rivers, canals, etc. should be towards the North, East or Northeast and the mountains towards the South and West. House design Avoid U-shaped, V-shaped, L-shaped and triangular shaped houses. The angles are not conducive to attracting positive energy. Prayer Room The Puja Room should be located in the North East direction. Alternatively, it can located in the North or East direction. While worshipping, the person should face the East. Idols should not exceed 6 inches in height. One should not sleep in the Puja Room. This direction is ideal for Water storage. Thus underground water tanks, filter etc. should be kept in this direction. Room for prayer and meditation is recommended to be in the north-east corner of the house. Deity or image of god should not face the south direction. Ideal positions are such that you face east or west while praying. Staircase If the steps leading to the entrance are damaged or broken, then the master of the house will face problems with his career and his expenses will soar. The staircase should ascend clockwise. The total no. of steps should be such that on division by 3, a remainder of 2 should be obtained for eg. 7, 11, 17 etc. Number of columns in a building Columns in a building should be in even numbers. Columns in the north-east corner should not be circular. When columns are exposed for architectural purposes, the number of exposed columns also should be even. Children's Room The children are future of the nation. If the parents are able to give right direction to the children at their tender age then tomorrow they will turn into disciplined citizens. The children's room, too, should be constructed in the North-West corner but the bathroom should be arranged in above noted direction only. Children's room can be located in this corner i.e. the North West. The study room can also be located in this direction. Water Tank on the Roof of the house should located in this direction. This direction is also ideal for Cattle and Granary store. Doors The Main-Gate should have two panels. The main door should not open inside the house. The doors in the house should not be noisy. The total number of doors, windows and ventilators in the house should be even in number for eg. 2, 4, 6 etc. but should not end with a 0 i.e. 10, 20 etc. If the front door frame is painted black, then the owner might have to face hardship.

If the door has cracks or is too old, then the owner will have a tough time gaining respect in society. Drawing Room It should be in North-West, South or west direction. In the traditional drawing rooms mattresses, covered with white sheets of cloth are spread in the entire room and round pillows are kept in South and West walls. Similarly, in the modern drawing room, the furniture should be kept in South and West directions. As far as possible the open space should be maximum in North and East directions. Dining Room In olden days the meals were taken in the kitchen itself but now the dining room has become an integral part of the drawing room. Dining Room should be towards the West as it is ruled by Saturn and it is in the way of Bhooteshwara, the symbolic representation of the hungry. It trees are to be planted in the premises, they can be planted in this direction i.e. the West. Guest Room It should be in North-West corner.

If the bedroom is located in the North, there would be unrest in the family. The bed should be placed in such a way that while sleeping, the head is towards the South. Alternatively, head can face towards the West. One should never sleep with legs towards the South. The inmates should not take meals in the bedroom otherwise they will suffer bad health, especially while they sit on the bed while eating. Divine idols should not be kept in the bedroom. While construction a bed - room, directions should be specially chosen. The directions according to which rooms should be constructed are as under:

North-West The room in this direction is suitable for guests and girls. South-West The Chief of the house should have his room in this direction. North-East Bedroom situated in this direction. In such situation there is a

possibility

of increase number of girls in the family South-East No bedroom should be located in this direction. The children do not take interest in studies. There is no sound sleep. People have much anger. Decisions are generally taken hurriedly. West There is a possibility of birth of larger number of girls in the family. Bathroom The bathroom should ideally be located in the East. Alternatively, it can be located in the North-West. But the bathroom should never be located in the North East. Wash basin etc. should be mounted on the Eastern wall of the bathroom. Exhausts fan can be fixed on North and East walls. Geysers should be South-East since it is 'Agneya' corner and Geyser is associated with heat. Balcony It should be constructed in the North-East to achieve good health and wealth and if in the houses already constructed, the balcony is in South-West, it should be covered with glass or screens. Entertainment Room This is an important place and the suitable directions for it is North-West or South. Food Storage The store should be in the kitchen and in the South-East corner. Garages It should be in the South-East or North-West corner but load on North and East Walls be kept at the minimum. DECORATING TIPS FROM THACHU Some rules should be followed while considering the decoration of the interiors of your house. Some rules and tips related to the same are as under: Shoe Racks The shoes and footwear should be placed in the south-west portion of the verandah or main hall only, and never in the bedroom. Shoes should never be placed in the north, south-east or east portion of the house. Almirah Almirah should be placed in the southwest of the room. If almirah with valuables are to be kept, the best place for the same is in the southwest portion of the southwest room in the house. The almirah with valuables and jewellery should open towards the north or east direction. Beds

The beds should be placed more towards the southwest of the room but never in the southwest corner. One should sleep with head towards the south for sound sleep and better health. Sofa Sets/Sitting Sofa sets or chairs etc. should be kept in the south and west of the living room. The chairs should be so kept as for he owner of the house, or elder person in the house to face towards south or west direction while sitting. Dining Table Dining Table can be placed in the north west of the kitchen. The owners or elder person in the house should face towards the north or east while the guest should face south or west while eating. Study Table A study table can be placed in the southwest of the room and the person should face towards north or east while studying. Mirrors Mirrors should only be fixed on the north and east walls. No mirrors should be place/installed in study rooms and opposite to beds in the bedrooms. Home Appliances: Heating appliances must be placed in the southeast of the room. Fridge should be placed in the northwest portion of the room. Television sets should never be placed in the southeast of the rooms. Plants Within The House According to Thachu, cactus or related plants should never be kept in the house. Plants with red flowers and bonsai of the trees are not allowed in the house. Avoid plants in the northeast corner of the house. Avoid pots along the north and east walls of the house. Paintings and Statues Thachu doesn't allow to use northeast corner of the house to hang paintings or any other thing, so as to keep the northeast clean and light. Paintings with scary marks and evil things should be avoided. Paintings depicting scenes of Ramayana and Mahabharata should be avoided; however, Thachu allows the use of other puranic paintings. Paintings of nude should be avoided. Paintings showing violence and abstract paintings with clashing colours should be avoided. Avoid keeping statues of gods in bedrooms. Thachu suggest paintings of nature scenes, prayer, and temples for good health and better living. Avoid keeping heavy statues in the northeast corner of the room. Never keep any stuffed animals in the house Interior Planning by Thachu Bright colours should not be used in the house. Cold and light colours should be used for painting the house. Paintings or photographs depicting war, sad faces, birds like owl, crow, pegion, erotic pictures etc. should not be used for decoration in the house

Entry This should ideally be North, or East of Northeast, West of Northwest. The entrance door should not directly be in front of the main gate as whatever comes in, tends to flow out with ease. The number of doors should be even and not odd, however there should be an odd number of doors in a line. Kitchen The kitchen ideally, should be towards South-East, the direction of God of Fire. Alternatively, it can located in the North West. Cook should face the East or North. All items pertaining to fire or heat should be installed in the SouthEast corner. The Main-switch, generators etc. should be located in the SouthEast corner of the house.The ideal place is in the south east corner of the building or a kitchen in the west of the building can also be tolerated. Ideally this should be South-east as this is the place of fire. Alternatively this can also be in the Northwest quadrant. The dining area in case the kitchen is in Southeast, should be towards the East and in the latter it should be north. Bed Room The master bedrooms should be in the South West corner of the house. If the house has more than one floor then, then it should be on the top most floor. The ceiling should be in level; this makes the energy of the room uniform, which in turn gives one a steady state of mind. Children's room should be in the north-west or west side. To have a better concentration they should have a separate study close to their bedrooms. Southeast is not recommended as this is the quadrant of fire and couples tend to be more argumentative in that corner. The Northwest can also be avoided as being the pocket of air one tends to be away from the home for some reason or the other. Study Room The best locations for this room are the north, west, north-west, east, north east. These directions attract the positive effects of Mercury increasing brain power, Jupiter increasing wisdom, Sun increasing ambition and Venus helps in bringing about creativity in new thoughts and ideas. Dining room The dining room and kitchen should be on the same floor and it should be adjacent to the kitchen from the left. The entrance to the dining room and the main door should not be facing each other. The dining table should be square of rectangular in shape and should not be attached or folding against the wall. Fountains and Fish Tanks Never keep fountains and fish tanks in bedroom and study. Paint Colours The kind of paint colours used in the house greatly effects the mood and general nature of the inmates. The psychology of the man can be disturbed is

wrong type of colours are used. In entrance of the house, avoid red, black and gray colours, while using white, light blue and dark green colours are good. Bathrooms Bathrooms and toilets should be adjacent to the north- east corner. This should ideally be located on the Northwest. These are best avoided in the Northeast and Southwest corner. The mirror-sink should be towards the North or East. The toilet seat should be along the North-South axis.They should never be constructed in the center or in the south -west corner of the house. Drawing Room It should always be constructed towards the north. The rooms located in the northern part of the house should be bigger in size as that compared to the rooms in the southern part of the house. They should be shorter to them in height by one to three inches. This is an important rule of Thachu Shastra. Furniture should be square or rectangular in shape. With all corners covered, the drawing room falls in the centre of the house. The exact centre of the house should be left vacant without any furniture in it. Open spaces/garden: According to Thachu, open spaces should be located in the North which is the place of the God of wealth. Open areas enriches the family. Store Room If essential then the store room should be constructed in the southern part of the building, other wise grain and other provisions can be stored in the kitchen or in other rooms and cupboards. Things should not be stored in diwans and box beds because it effects the magnetic environment of the self and the room causing sleeping disorders. Waste Storage Daily wastes from the kitchen should be kept covered in the south- west corner of the kitchen. Height of Rooms The rooms in the northern part of the house should be larger than the rooms in the southern side by 6-9 inches, and lower by 1-3 inches. Height of rooms should ideally be, 12- 14 feet. Doors/Windows As far as doors are concerned, the main door should be larger than the inner doors and all doors should open towards the walls. All windows should be at least 3 feet 6 above ground level, and should be at the same level from the top. Window openings should be on the northern and eastern sides of the buildings. Thachu is a precious compilation of concepts and ideas that consider the affects on human life and dwellings of various natural phenomena such as: Earth's gravitational force Sun's heat, light and infra-red radiation Volume and intensity of rainfall Direction and velocity of wind General East is the most auspicious direction for entrance to a house. The slope of the property should be from west to east or south to north. Shadow of a tree should never fall on the house. The north direction represents prosperity, and should never be blocked. Cactus plant should never be grown in the house. All doors should open towards inside. Door hinges should be noiseless. Columns in a building must be placed in even numbers in any construction. Bedroom The main bedroom should be constructed in the south-west direction. The bed should never be placed below a beam. Square and rectangle shape bedrooms are perfect for ensuring peace and prosperity. Avoid hanging pictures that depict violence or sorrow. Any reflective surfaces such as mirrors and televisions should be covered at night while sleeping. Sleep with your head towards South. Minimise clutter in your room as clutter represents the unfinished tasks of your life. Living Room The north direction is ideal for the construction of living room.

Thachu advises against the use of paintings which depict negative aspects of life. Air-conditioners should be in the west and not in the southeast section. Southern and western corners of the room are perfect for placing the furniture. Dining tables must have even-numbered chairs. Kids Room Kids' room should be constructed in the northwest corner of the house. The colour scheme should be mild. Don't place the furniture sticking to the wall, as it obstructs the flow of positive energy. The study desk should be placed in such a manner that the child faces eastern, northern or north-eastern corner while studying. The computer should be placed in the southwest corner. Kitchen The ideal location of the kitchen is the southeast corner of the house, with northwest being the second best option. Cooking activity should be done while facing east, as it's an auspicious direction. The other option is north direction. Electrical items such as microwaves, juicers and mixers should be placed in the southeast corner of the kitchen. The refrigerator should be in the northwest, southeast, south or west. The kitchen must have adequate provision for cross-ventilation.
