o an image o a picture o a collage o Colours etc, but keep in mind the cover is the first impression. Sketch out initial ideas, jot notes in point form. Make sure your brainstorming content is comprehensible and readable. Save all your conceptual ideas and discuss with your peers and teacher. When youve narrowed down your cover design try to incorporate more details. Create a concept sheet, that should include a thumbnail sketches with at least 5 initial ideas for the cover design and a brief description in point form. Experimenting, Planning and Focusing Once youve decided what youd like to be on the cover create a mock up and try out various composition possibilities using the basic principles and elements of design. This will form a strong basis of your design and the possibilities should be carefully considered. You can try cutting a Bristol board the size of the yearbook cover and try many compositions with the elements of design you may want to use Title, School name, year, image etc. Think of color, texture, finish for the cover. Try to use the different elements and principles of design to create a unique composition. Share your ideas with your peers, get their opinions. Discuss your strengths of the composition and areas that you can improve. a. i. ii. iii. iv. Have two different people fill out the following critique of your photos: Critiquers name:_______________________________________ Which composition do you like the best?________________________ Why?_______________________________________________ Critiquers name:_____________________________________

Producing/Implementing ideas You may create your photoshop file , dimensions 8.5 x 11. Include bleed, check out the example provided for the final size to produce the graphic that you want for the cover page. Try out various compositions and create the final version of the cover page, convert it into the correct format and place it into the In-design template in the yearbook SUBMIT- Yearbook cover folder.

Evaluating/Reflecting and Improvising Try out various compositions and choose the two best ones that you like. Get feedback from at least two peers about your design and reflect on the feedback. Look for margins, spine, and dimensions of the cover and related content that will go on the cover. A sample anatomy of the book cover template is provided on the below. A Few things to keep in mind when building your hard cover: - The cover bleed is 5/8", much bigger the interior pages - The safe zone does not exist. Everything on the cover will be there - The front and back covers will be slightly bigger than your page size (If the book is 8.5x11, the cover will be 8 5/8"x11 1/4") - Feel free to place anything on the spine you wish, it will print just fine - There is a hinge. It allows the hard cover to open and close without ripping the case wrap (printed cover) and it is part of the front & back covers. Basic Layout for Hard Covers:
