born in 1879. Mr. Barr is II. member of Attica Lodg-e, No. 18, A., 1<'. & A. M., and
also of Attica Lodge, No. 33, 1. O. O. F. He was appointed County Commissioner
in 1882, and was elected to tbat office in the autumn of the same year, with a majority of 1,050. Mr. Barr is a stanch Republican.

Jh:\x,.-l'fT C. BOGGS is II. native of Warren County, Ind., was bornin the year
1854, and is a son of William and Mary Boggs. He obtained a current school education, and became a teacher in 1:::175. The same year he was married to :Mary C.
Schlosser. by whom he had one daughter. now six years of age. Mr. Boggs is the
owner of sixty, live acres of very excellent land, containing excellent improvements; this land he inherited from his father. He is a general farmer and stockraiser, a strong Republican and an esteemed citizen.
JOHN B. CLAWSON is a son of Timothy and Nancy Clawson; and was born
in this township February 10, Ifl.'j.I. He remained at home and rassed his boyhood
with his father, whom he assisted ill summer and attended schoo in winter. March
27, 18i9, he was married to Melissa Pearson, of this county, daughter of Samuel and
Jane Pearson; to wbich union have been bestowed two chrldren+-Cclia and Zada ..
He was elected Justice of the Peace. and served for eigbteen months. About 1880, .
he engaged in mercantile business at Independence, which be still courinues.
In
1882, lie was elected Townsb ip Trustee by the Democrats.
Mr. Clawson is a Master Mason, and II Past Grand in the order of Odd' Fellows. He is, upsides, a very
worthy gentleman and a highly esteemed citizen.
JuSEPH
COX is 1\ native of Montgomery County, Ohio, was born in 1815,
and is a son of Jonathan and Charily Cox. He obtained but a limited education
from the subscription schools, and in 1826 he came with his father to this county,
where he now has:W7 acres. In HmG, he was married to Sarah Hinshaw. daughter
of Elias and Sally (Willinms) Hinshaw, born in Highland County. Ohio, in 1812,
to which union were born fonr chilaren-one
boy, deceased, and three girls, now
married.
Mr. Cox. having located here at. an early day, has experienced the common hardships of II pioneer, having in the beginning only an ox-team. lI1r. and
Mrs. Cox are members of the United Brethren Church, aud lire highly respect.ed
personages.

JOSEPH DOTY is a native of Pennsylvania, born May t"1'/95, and is Q

In 1830, be removed to Indiana. and settled in .Independence, IU this township, .

Mrs. Doty died ill March, 1848. and
in the same. year he married Cyuthia A. Freeman, daughter of Henry and Mary
Sharp. To this union were born two boys, one of whom died when three aud the
other when fonrteen years of age. Mrs. Doty is a member of the United Brethren
Cburch, which he also attends.
Mr. Doty is now in his eighty-eighth year, yet he
enjoys good health, and can tell many interesting stories of the early settlement
of th is county.

E~OCH H. FOSTER, a son of John and Thinetta Foster, wasborn
in Putnam County, Ind., in 1826. In 18il:3, his family moved to Benton County, where '.
he assisted his father in the work of the farm, who, in 1835. purchased 220 acres in
Warren County, where Enoch labored until 1846. when he was married to Mary
Gaskell. daughter of Ezra and Nancy Gaskell, of Indiana.
Mr. Foster then located
in Bvntnn County, where he remained until 1853, when he removed to Illinois. and,
in 1861. enlisted tn the Seventy-second Illinois Volunteers.
After returning from
the war, he purchased 120 acres of improved land in this county.

Foster are the parents of live children, of whom ~11 are living.

dealer in walnut lumber, Independence. Wt\5 bor n in
Butler CoUDlY. Ohio, December 26, 18~4. After 1853, he resided in Warren County,
Ind., and, in 1861, enlisted in the F'ortietb Indiana Volunteers;
he was taken
prisoner in 1864. and con tined at burbarous Andersonville for three months, thence
removed to Charleston and Florence, S. C., whence be w!ls paroled in the beginning
of 1~6;). Thereafter he located at HattIe Ground. 'Vhlte Co., Ind., and attended
sehoul two years.
He then beg/\o the grocery business at Pine Villagc. and while
Jiving there married Mal) Wade, on the 17th o! October, 1873. About 1876, he sold
his store and moved to Kansas, where Iu- remained two years: wheu lie returned to
Indiana and located in J Ildepen(!cJlcll. 1\11';, Gunkle died in .18i7, leaving one child,
and December 22, 1881. he married Nancy R. Puckett, of this county.
In 1822, lie
was elected by the H,publir.tlns Justice of the Peace. He is a member of LODe
:~tar Lodge, No, 549, 1. O. O. F., nnd of Shawnee Encampment, No. 20; he is also
