The Dear John Letter By John Freeman Columnist (Continued) Awareness; not suspicion! A concerned mother, who means well, started a blog called: "I am Adam Lanza's Mother". The blog intends to draw attention to the problem of mental illness among young people in this country, especially concerning autism. From experience, I know children in my extended family who have struggled with mild cases of autism, so, I feel there should be more awareness about this dilemma in society. However, I don't think now is the time to label this horrific tragedy as a product of autism. For one, it shows sympathy for the shooter, and yes, I know he is only a kid himself, but lets be clear, he acted alone and he acted willingly in unspeakable cruelty. Secondly, we may be more sympathetic to the mother, who, as more details present themselves in this case may have a hard time defending her. The blog in question started two days after the shooting? Only two days!? Thats too soon to have any discussion on anything whether concerning guns, media, or mental illness! I understand what this blogger is trying to do creating a dialogue about autism, but I question its purpose. For example, two days after 9/11, no one said, "I am Osama bin Ladens mother", not even Osama bin Ladens mother. In other words, if you failed as a mother why would you want to broadcast that? Why can't you say I'm Einsteins mother? Strive a little higher. They say Adam Lanza suffered from a form of autism called Aspersers syndrome, but again, lets be careful when we attach any illness to this tragedy because, though we may mean well, we may further isolate a segment of society that already feel like outsiders. Think about it; ask any Muslim you know if 9/11 was good "public relations" for Islam. If Adam Lanza is given the label of "autism" parents will get nervous when their kids are sharing classes with children who are autistic. How else do you think autistic kids or their parents will feel? Its human nature to try and find someone or something as a scapegoat, without looking at the entire big picture. I checked many websites about autism, including Autismspeaks.org, and they all agree with me on this. Our role as parents, or human beings with any common decency, should be praying for the families who are suffering now. Now is not the time to bring autism into the debate, people are already suffering enough in this world, including those who suffer from autism. Russian Ingenuity!
It was told to this reporter by someone who should know, a Radiologist, that a new Russian Mig fighter jet with pilot landed in Japan seeking asylum. After the jet was thoroughly devoured by expert flight engineers, it was discovered the electronics contained vacuum tubes that patterned their ancient ancestors from 50 years ago. Seeking for a reason it was thought that this would be an effective means of saving the electronics from destructive waves that are emitted after EMP bombs explode. The real truth is that the Russian Military cant afford the good stuff!
