PASTORAL MINISTERS
Traces of Grace
Dear Fellow Parishioners; This is the Feast of the Holy Family. The same family whom King Herod sought out to murder, the same family that fled to a foreign country to escape persecution and the same family in which a mother stood at her son's cross weeping. Before Christmas as the funerals of the children and adults who were killed in the Newtown school shootings took place I could not help think as a pastor how one might approach this terrible tragedy and what one might say at such horrific moments. I realize that whatever a pastor might feel in those moments, it would pale in comparison to what survivors and the families of the victims would be feeling. What I have discovered over the years as a priest is that words are terribly inadequate to compensate for this kind of loss. Attempts at trying to explain it away with pious words does not satisfy a wounded heart. Images of a young father carrying his child's tiny casket down the aisle to place his child at the foot of the altar come back to me from many years ago. With tears in his eyes, he gave his child back to God. I remember not so many years ago looking at my sister and her husband in their pain during the liturgies to bury their young son who had been struck by a car and being so choked up that no words could escape my lips. But those moments help teach me that we enter into this wonderful but terrible mystery of this thing called life. That as much as we would like to believe and hope that all will be right, it simply is not. We stand before the cross and enter into the mystery of suffering and loss in this life and carry our wounded hearts forward. Somehow this is all part of this life, and as much as I wonder at times if this is all part of God's plan for this world, I must try to embrace all that is evil and broken in this world. How will God bring some good from all this suffering? None of us can see that yet, but we trust that He will. Someone mentioned to me that on the news all sorts of random strangers from all over the country have visited Newtown to give out free cups of coffee or simply to hug those who are suffering. We might not be able to travel that distance ourselves, but our hearts can go out to the families by our prayers and even fasting in solidarity for those who have lost their children. And we are reminded to hug our own children and bless them. Together in Christ;
Fr Steve Pastor
