12 June 2008 12:30 PM Where I am working at present have been given a drawing which has an emergency generator connected within the circuit. When looking at the drawing the cable sizes are in imperial which got me thinking to iansettle what is now the metric equivalent to the imperial sizes. Posts: 776 I have drawn up a table to what I think is correct but would like Joined: 20 September feedback to wether I am correct or not. 2005 Imperial Cable Size Metric Cable Equivalent 1/.044 1.0 mm 3/.029 1.5 mm 3/.036 ? 7/.029 2.5 mm 7/.036 4.0 mm 7/.044 6.0 mm 7/.052 10.0 mm 7/.064 16.0 mm 19/.044 ? 19/.052 25.0 mm 19/.064 35.0 mm

Top 12 June 2008 12:50 PM : Bottom Go Here you go; Standard imperial cable sizes; e.g. 3/036, 7/029, 7/0.036, 7/0.044, 7/0.052 These are strand diameter in inches and number of strands e.g. 7/029" 1 in EQUALS 645.16 mm rocknroll Conversion: imperial to metric. advanced search

Posts: 7980 Joined: 03 October General method: (number of strands) x (3.142 / 4) x (strand diameter^2) x (645.16) 2005 = CSA in mm^2 e.g. 7/029" = 7 x (3.142 / 4) x (0.029^2) x 645.16 = 2.98mm^2 e.g. 7.044 = 7 x (3.142 / 4) x (0.044^2) x 645.16 = 6.86mm^2 Strands mm2 3/0.036" 1.97 7/0.029" 2.98 7/0.036" 4.60 7/0.044" 6.9 7/0.052" 9.59 Hope this helps

There was a thread on this a while ago, but I use as a rule of thumb: 1/044 = 1mm 3/029 = 1.5mm 7/029 = 2.5mm 7/036 = 4mm or 6mm 7/044 = 6mm or 10mm 7/064 = 10mm or 16mm 19/036= 25mm regards ------------------------"Take nothing but a picture, leave nothing but footprints!" ------------------------"Oh! ------------------------"You can throw all the philosophy you like at the problem, but at the end of the day it's just basic electrical theory!" ------------------------Top : Bottom 12 June 2008 08:52 PM I believe the correct answer is: There are not any "equivalents" you make a decision regards continued usage based on experience as there are not tables for these Cables in the Regulations, therefore you cannot do any calculations for them. sparkingchip Andy Betteridge Posts: 4489 Joined: 18 January 2003 Top : Bottom IET Wiring and the regulations Imperial Cable Sizes Topic Tools
