Walleye Madness is bigger and better

On New Years Eve downtown Port Clinton will rock with the 16th annual Walleye Madness. The Walleye Madness committee is very excited with the many changes and features of the Drop this year, according to Maria Smith of the committee. Some of those changes include professional entertainment, a new stage, a new descent of how Wylie is dropped, a new venue for the kids activities and many additional guests. We have also added a section of bleachers that will be placed in the parking lot beside The Fishermens Wharf to assist the disabled and elderly. Events will kick off at 4 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall with the kids festivities and Touch-A-Truck. The Wanna Bees will be performing for the kids from 5- 6 p.m. followed by the kids Walleye Drop. DJ Jeff of Rock & Roll Express will begin music on the Main Stage at 6 p.m. There will

The plan was to have The Beacon in your hands on Christmas Eve. I am writing this on Friday, Dec. 21. Soall of us at The Beacon would like to wish all of you, our loyal readers, and everybody in our readership area, including those of you who read this online on our website, www.thebeacon. net, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Remember, our next issue will come out on Jan. 3, and you will get to read our annual report from the Great Swami, with his tongue in cheek predictions of what the news will be in 2022. Swami has actually been right several times, so be sure to read carefully.

Since I reported last week about the early delivery of The Beacon, there have been a few complications. First of all, our printer at the Advertiser Tribune in Tiffin has been experiencing a shortage in trained pressmen. Then, one of their pressmen became ill and had to spend a week or so at the hospital. So on Friday, I learned that The Beacon would be printed at their Warren, Ohio, facility and that our carriers wouldnt get their hands on the papers until mid-day Christmas Eve. Oh the joys of being a community newspaper publisher.

And speaking of Devin Kohlman, the Port Clinton Kiwanis Club is planning a very special fundraiser for him on Friday, Feb. 1, before the Port ClintonPerkins boys basketball game. The Kiwanians are joining forces with the PCHS Key Club and PCMS Builders Club for a pancake and

sausage dinner. Pancakes for Devin will be held in the PCHS cafeteria before the game. All proceeds from that event will go to helping Devins family with their enormous medical expenses for his chemotherapy treatments and travel. The dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. and is only $5 per person. The Kiwanis Internationals defining statement reads: Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Perhaps we can help change the world for Devin Kohlman.

This year seems to have been a massive national effort to incorporate political correctness into the vernacular of the season. Nativity scenes have been removed from public places, and lighted trees have become holiday trees. Just a little over 2,000 years ago, a baby boy was born to a virgin in a little town in northern Israel. The common belief held by the billions of people who call themselves Christians is that this was the Messiah foretold in ancient scripture as a promised savior for the Jewish people and for the world. Not all people share this belief, but the Judeo-Christian tradition that has been passed down over centuries that tells us to celebrate the birth of this child as the birth of the Son of God. The event is called Christmas, and Christmas is what I celebrate every year with my family. It will be special this year because I now have a grandson who is 10 months old. His name is Elyjah. Merry Christmas to all.

Sheriff affirms emergency levels

Ottawa County Sheriff Stephen Levorchick has affirmed that the following weather emergency levels developed by the previous administration will remain in effect. Level 2: Roadways are hazardous due to conditions such as ice and blowing/drifting snow. Conditions could change at any time. Drivers should use extreme caution and allow plenty of time for their travel. Contact your employer with regard to whether or not you should report for work. Level 3: Hazardous conditions such as ice and blowing/drifting snow have caused some roads to possibly be closed. Contact your employer with regard to whether or not you should report for work. Special Note: Closure of roads will not be automatic in a Level 3. Closure of roads will be done after evaluation of conditions and will be declared by the Sheriff. Also, there will be no order for arrest for drivers on the roadways during a Level 3 unless there would be a declaration of roads being closed. Deputies will utilize current traffic codes should the need arise.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Rudes offers firearms safety classes to teachers and administrators

Terrence Rudes, Port Clinton attorney and firearms instructor at the Oak Harbor Conservation Club, is offering a four-hour firearms safety class at no charge to any teacher or administrator. It will give the teacher or administrator a working knowledge of firearms, including how to recognize and be sure a guns safety is on. The first class has no shooting component. It is a safety and information class. Just as children in this area should all learn to swim if they are going to be around water, if people are going to be around guns they should know the safety basics of handling firearms, said Rudes. Rudes has trained hundreds of people over the years to safely handle firearms. Contact Terry Rudes at trudes@cros.net or at 419-732-3000 for further information or to schedule a class.

During this holiday season and every day of the year, we wish you all the best.

Happy Holidays!
Immaculate Conception students brighten the world
Melinda Stacy, Kelly Bullerwell, Brittany Fraley, Karen Rinas, Alma Showalter

Port Clinton Branch:

The children of Immaculate Conception brightened the world with their annual Christmas program held Tuesday Dec. 18 in the school gymnasium. The concert was performed by grades kindergarten through grade five and was attended by a full gymnasium of parents, grandparents, family and friends. The children sang traditional favorites like Must Be Santa, Winter Wonderland and Jingle Bell Rock. The second half of the program included a Christmas pageant where every child had a role

in the portraying of the First Christmas. During the pageant portion of the show, the children sang holiday hymns from around the world in their native languages. Songs in Polish, Austrian, Italian, Spanish, Czech, and French were all learned by the students. Silent Night ended the show in both English and in German. The program was led by Mrs. Mary Krejci, Director of Music for the school, and accompanist George Krejci.

several achievements including a 22483 winning record. The Board honored and commended Quisno for his induction into the Ohio High School Football Coachs Hall of Fame, for his commitment to excellence, and for his dynamic development of youth during his stellar tenure at Oak Harbor. Surrounded by family and friends, Coach Quisno heard many words of praise and thanks from former players and coaches he worked with. Additionally, the Village of Oak Harbor and the Ottawa County Commissioners declared Dec. 18, 2012, as Coach Gary Quisno Day. In other business, the B-CS Board of Education decided to maintain the current grade level configurations for its three school buildings for the 20132014 school year. R.C. B-C-S Board Honors Quisno; continues grade configurations

For Coach Gary Quisno, the Dec. 18 B-C-S Board of Education meeting was an evening to remember. Quisno had been with the district as a teacher, athletic director, and Oak Harbor High School Head Football Coach for nearly three decades, racking up and staff. Our students, staff, administration, and community have worked together to adjust to their new environments. There is no need to make any changes to current grade configurations for next school year and into the near future, Parmigian said. In other business, the Board hired Matthew Chasteen (Oak Harbor High School Class of 1995 graduate) as assistant mechanic for the transportation department to fill the position left vacant by Mr. Tom Lenz, who is retiring after 17 years with the district. The Board also thankfully accepted several donations: $500 from Crown Battery for the continuation of the seating project at the high school; along with donations of $1,500 from Oak Harbor Area Merchants, $500 from Steven & Brianne Harder, and $500 from Michael R. Harder to be used towards the purchase of a new infield grooming machine and other projects for the Oak Harbor Girls Softball Program. Additionally, the Board thankfully accepted the donation of $1,700 from the TIE (Together in Education) Parent group at R.C. Waters Elementary. The TIE group wished to have $50 provided to each classroom teacher at R.C. Waters for the purpose of buying classroom supplies for students. Also, the Board also accepted a grant, written by Transportation Director Ginger Stayancho, of $9,396 from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency that will be used to install diesel oxidations catalysts on six B-C-S buses. The next B-C-S Board meeting has been set for Jan. 14, 2013 at 6 p.m. at the Board Office. The Board will begin by holding a brief Organizational Meeting, and will then move into the regular business meeting at 6:15 p.m.

Eco-friendly ways to ring in the New Year

feature lots of food and beverages, and hosts can use this to get a head start on their resolutions. Instead of serving food on paper plates and beverages in disposable paper, plastic or foam cups, use reusable glassware or even plastic cups and plates that can be washed and reused. In addition, replace paper napkins with cloth napkins that can be used more than once. When forgoing paper products, dont forget to abandon traditional invitations for e-vites. Invite guests via e-mail or through social networking sites instead of sending out traditional paper invitations that needlessly use paper and need to be transported. Embrace eco-friendly beverages. Adult beverages are a big part of many New Years Eve parties, and even these beverages can be eco-friendly. The growing popularity of craft breweries, or microbreweries, has made it easy for party hosts to serve eco-friendly drinks. Purchase your partys beer supply from a local microbrewery to cut down on the beers carbon footprint. Buying locally reduces reliance on transportation to get items from the manufacturer into your refrigerator, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and pollution. But beer isnt the only way to make your beverage menu more eco-friendly. Hosts can replace traditional vodka with organic vodka and traditional wine with biodynamic wine. When the time comes to toast the past year and ring in the new one, do so with champagne or sparkling wine made from organic grapes. Encourage guests to recycle throughout the night. When guests arrive, explain to them that the night will be an ecofriendly affair. Set up a separate trash receptacle for recyclable items, including bottles and cans. Think of ways to use discarded wine and champagne bottles as decorative items, be it for table settings or vases to hold fresh flowers. And when recycling, dont overlook the smaller items. Corks from wine bottles can be recycled and reused for a variety of products, including flooring tiles, building insulation and sports equipment. Donate food at the end of the night. Hosts often have food leftover at the end of the night. Rather than discarding all those leftovers, donate them to a local food bank or homeless shelter. Make these arrangements in advance so the following morning you can donate the leftovers before they spoil. New Years Eve is one of the most festive nights of the year. And with a few simple steps, hosts can make their gathering as eco-friendly as it is enjoyable.

Replacing traditional champagne with an organic alternative is one way for hosts to throw an eco-friendly New Years Eve party this year. A new year is on the horizon and men and women across the globe are readying their New Years resolutions. In recent years, more and more men and women have resolved to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle in the year ahead. But you dont have to wait until the new calendar year to go green. In fact, New Years revelers can turn their New Years Eve party into an eco-friendly affair in a variety of ways. Forgo paper products. New Years Eve festivities typically

Friends help friends drive sober and safe

During the holidays, there are many opportunities to enjoy the camaraderie of fine food, family, and friends and beverages. A few sensible precautions can help assure that the festivities and celebrations are not impaired. Driving impaired is simply not worth the risk. Not only do you risk killing yourself or someone else, but the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can be significant. Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin; Before drinking, designate a sober driver and leave your car keys at home; If youre impaired, use a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation so you are sure to get home safely; If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, dont hesitate to contact your local law enforcement; If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

The consumption of alcoholic beverages is routine at holiday celebrations across the country. Unfortunately, National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) data shows that about 1,200 lives are lost each year between Thanksgiving and New Years due to drinking and driving. If you are hosting a holiday celebration, there are steps you can take to ensure your guests dont become a holiday statistic.

Facts from DADD (Dads against Drunk Driving)

Automobile crashes are the #1 killer of our kids nationwide. Of all the fatal crashes where a teen was killed 60% involved alcohol. In the first year of driving a sober teen is 10 times more likely to have an accident than a driver with just 2 years of driving experience. A teenage male driver who has been drinking is 18 times more likely to crash than a non drinking teenage male. A female teen is 54 times more likely to have a crash than a non drinking female teen. Alcohol is the first drug used by our youth and unfortunately has the most deadly affects on driving ability. 80% of high school students have tried alcohol. 40% of high school students drink given the opportunity. If you care about your kids and their friends you can help. On average someone is killed by a drunk driver every 40 minutes.(NHSTA 2008) An estimated three of every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related traffic crash at some time in their lives. (NHTSA, 2001) Research shows that alcohol-related crashes cost the public an estimated $114.3 billion annuallythis includes an estimated $63.2 billion lost in quality of life due to these crashes. (Taylor, Miller, and Cox, 2002)

Eat, Then Drink and be Merry

Provide plenty of food to keep your guests from drinking on an empty stomach. Keep in mind that salty snacks tend to make people thirsty and encourage them to drink more. Be sure there are nonalcoholic options for non-drinkers and designated drivers. When serving drinks to your guests, here are some things to keep in mind. If preparing an alcoholic punch, use a non-carbonated base. Alcohol is absorbed faster with a carbonated base. Never serve someone under the legal drinking age or allow minors to serve guests. Dont let guests mix their own drinks. Designate a reliable bartender to keep track of who is drinking and how much. Do not encourage drinking. Its not essential to a good time. Be a good host by staying within your limits so you can be sure your guests stay within theirs. Close the bar 90 minutes before the party ends and serve a dessert with coffee. Remember that only time can sober someone who has been drinking. Copyright 2012 by Metro Creative Graphics, Inc. | 519 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10018 800-223-1600 or 212-947-5100

Fourth Graders learn and create at Ferguson Gallery

Art students in grade four at Immaculate Conception School had the opportunity to visit Fergusons Gallery and Studio in Marblehead. Master artist Cary Ferguson and his son Cary Jr. worked with students individually to create a paperweight. Students were amazed at the colorful creations they made with the swirling and bubbling glass. Mrs. Joni Hoffman, the schools art teacher, arranged the trip.

The students enjoyed putting smiles on peoples faces as they went door to door delivering the baskets and giving something back to their community.

Take the hassle out of gift returns

The magic of the holiday season is hard to replicate. Gatherings with friends and family members can put smiles on many peoples faces, especially for those people who only see their loved ones once a year. But the smiles and laughter may dim when faced with the prospect of returning unwanted gifts. Few people havent had to return a holiday gift once or twice in their lifetimes. In fact, a survey from Consumer Reports indicates that 1 in 5 Americans will return a holiday present this year, while retail merchants expect about 10 percent of all holiday purchases to be returned. Part of the difficulty of returning items is a result of stores cracking down on merchandise fraud. While there are scores of honest customers simply looking to exchange that paw print set of pajamas for something a little more stylish, there are plenty others who are interested in taking advantage of the holiday season to return items that may have been used, such as a cocktail dress returned December 26. With the desire to curtail fraud, retailers have tightened the reigns on return policies. Keeping this in mind and being prepared for a conversation with a stores customer service employee can make the return process go more smoothly. Know the stores return policy. It pays to go online or call the store to find out about its specific return policy. Being armed with this knowledge could help you avoid a trip to the store and waiting in line only to be turned away. Return policies may vary depending on the item being returned, so be sure to check about the item you have. Requirements often are more stringent on electronics. Use a receipt whenever possible. Receipts speed up the return process considerably. Whether it is the actual receipt or a gift receipt, this small slip of paper is evidence that the item being returned actually was purchased at the particular store on a particular date. Bring identification. Stores will sometimes honor a return for store credit when you present your drivers license. Keep in mind that there may be a strict limit on how many items you can return without a receipt, and many stores keep track of this information by utilizing the unique scan code on your license. If you are a serial returner, you may find your efforts are for naught. Keep boxes closed. Restocking fees are charges exacted for items returned that have been opened. Generally they are applied to electronics and appliances sometimes 15 to 30 percent of the total purchase price. To get the most value for your return, be sure to keep the box closed. Cut down on the stress and hassle of holiday returns by knowing store policies and only returning items that are unopened and unused. And whenever possible, bring a receipt, even if its just a gift receipt.

Tips for families dining out for the holidays

Dining out for the holidays is a tradition for many families. Dining out has many advantages, including no cleanup once the meal is over and a more varied menu that provides guests more choices than the standard holiday fare. Dining out can also prove less expensive for the holiday host. The tab at the end of a night on the town can be split among the guests, whereas the food bill when hosting a holiday dinner at home is often left to the host and the host alone. But dining out for the holidays does require some work, even if none of that work involves scrubbing dirty dishes or finding extra seats for guests. When planning a holiday dinner at a restaurant, consider the following tips. Do your homework. A favorite restaurant might be tops on your list, but do some comparison shopping before settling on a restaurant. Prices can vary greatly when it comes to private parties, and some might not even be capable of accommodating the kind of large party that might accompany you for a holiday dinner. Start shopping well before the holiday season to see who thats equidistant from everyones home. Consider the proximity of public transportation to the restaurant as well, as some guests might prefer to avoid holiday traffic by taking public transportation. Inquire about a restaurants pricing flexibility. There might be room for negotiation regarding the menu, including choices on the food and beverages being offered, but youll never know if you dont ask. Traditional holiday fare will likely be available, but discuss alternatives to such menu items, including if there is anything for vegetarians or if there is a gluten-free meal option. In addition, some restaurants might be willing to negotiate price, especially for large parties. Sign a contract if your party will be especially large. Contracts can ensure that especially large dinner parties dont go awry. This may require a deposit in advance of the holiday, but the contract should spell out the menu, including food and beverages that will be offered, and the final price of the meal. Be an early bird. If the responsibility of planning or hosting the dinner has fallen on your shoulders, then get to the restaurant before your guests. This gives you time to ensure everything is ready and increases the chances your holiday dinner will go according to plan. Dont forget invitations. Treat the holiday dinner like you might treat a wedding reception or a birthday party, inviting guests several weeks in advance so everyone has time to plan their trip. Include directions to the restaurant in your invitations, and remind guests that holiday traffic might require they leave earlier to make it to the restaurant on time for the start of the meal.

offers the best menu, the most affordable prices and the best accommodations. Choose a restaurant thats accessible to everyone. Guests can stay overnight when a holiday dinner is at a relatives house. However, guests will almost certainly be driving home after a holiday dinner at a restaurant. Make everyones post-meal commute home as easy as possible by choosing a centrally located restaurant

Gifts for your holiday host or hostess

A hostess gift can be as simple or as extravagant as your budget allows. Many people tend to gravitate toward food-related gifts because of their simplicity and the idea that they can low bowl that can be used for the oil. Wine caddy: The number of restaurants that enable you to bring your own beverages has multiplied. This means that diners can benefit from practical ways to transport their favorite vintage from home to the table. Wine caddies and holders come in many different designs, from some that resemble a womans clutch to suitcase-inspired designs. After-dinner treat: Put together a basket of foods that can be served after dinner. A citrusy palate cleanser, like lemon-infused butter cookies, fresh fruit and a sparkling beverage may fit the bill perfectly. Specialty stores often sell gift towers this time of year that package together delicious treats. Scented sugars: Oil isnt the only condiment that can be infused with aroma and additional flavor. Purchase canning jars and fill them with your favorite brand of granulated sugar. Add flavorings, such as cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans, mint leaves, or hazelnuts, to give foods a subtle essence of flavor. Tie a bow around the jar and present it as a thoughtful gift. Garden gift basket: Although the cold weather is here, a garden gift basket can still make a welcome gift. Include flower seeds, fertilizer sticks, a garden trowel, a pair of gardening gloves and any other essentials you can think of. Spa gift certificate: Entertaining is hard work and a hostess may enjoy some time to recuperate once the holidays have come and gone. A gift certificate for a facial or massage will provide at least an hour of pampering. Homemade treats: Much in the way a hand-written thank-you note can convey how much you appreciate a gift, a handmade gift can tell a host that you were thankful to be invited to an event. If you prepare a signature dish, whip it up and bring it along. Its also easy to create some simple garnishes and package them in a decorative tin or jar. Think homemade salsa or a homemade chocolate ganache sauce. Breakfast in bed: Enable the host and hostess to sleep in the next day by having breakfast all ready to go. Put together a basket or tray with individual bottles of juice, packets of tea or instant coffee and some gourmet muffins or scones. Add a jar of jam and some small spreading knives so breakfast can be served with minimal hassle. There are many gifts that can treat a host or hostess to something special as a token of appreciation for opening up his or her home during the holiday season.

be served at the gathering of friends and family. But conventional etiquette suggests that hosts and hostesses are not obligated to serve the beverages or foods guests bring and should not feel ashamed to reserve them for their own private use. So guests may want to think outside the box when gifting holiday hosts this season. Here are some ideas to consider. Flavored dipping oils: Herb-infused oils lend a different taste to prepared foods and also can be used as a bread garnish in lieu of butter. What would the holidays be without snowflakes falling outside, a mug of hot cocoa in hand and a favorite Christmas movie on television? Television is full of feelgood movies come the holiday season. Choose from among classic flicks you have watched year after year or new movies vying for spots as soonto-be favorites. W a tc h i n g Christmas movies is a holiday tradition for many families. So much so that lines from popular movies are easily remembered and recognized. Those who can recite movies verbatim might enjoy testing their mettle with the following Christmas quiz loaded with memorable quotes from some holiday classics. Movie Quotes Quiz 1. It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. 2. Uh, since the United States Government declares this man to be Santa Claus, this court will not dispute it. Case dismissed. 3. If TV has taught me anything, its that miracles always happen to poor kids at Christmas. It happened to Tiny Tim, it happened to Charlie Brown, it happened to The Smurfs, and its gonna happen to us! 4. I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200 shot range model air rifle.

5. Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen. 6. Iris, in the movies, we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, youre behaving like the best friend. 7. Who gave you permission to tell Charlie there was no Santa Claus? I think if were going to destroy our sons delusions, I should be a part of it. 8. I want to wash my hands, my face, my hair with snow. 9. Were not just doing this for us. Were doing it for the kids. For every kid who ever sat on Santas lap. For every little girl who left cookies and milk for Santa on Christmas night. For every little boy who opens a package Christmas morning and finds clothes instead of toys. It breaks my heart. 10. We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. Its run by a big Eastern syndicate you know. 11. I fear you more than any spectre I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear your company, and do it with a thankful heart. Will you not speak to me? 12. Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we cant see. 13. Light the lamp, not the rat, light the lamp, not the rat! Put me out, put me out, put me out! 14. Tell me something, Billy. How come a cute little guy like this can turn into a thousand ugly monsters? 15. Wanna see some magic? OK, lets watch you disappear! 16. Thats not my Christmas! My Christmas is filled with laughter, and joy... and this: my Sandy Claws outfit. I want you to make it. 17. Thats neither pig nor pork, its beef. 18. I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel.

Financial Focus

Make some New Years (financial) resolutions for 2013

Once again, its time to make some New Years resolutions. This year, in addition to promising yourself that youll hit the gym more often, learn a new language or take up a musical instrument all worthy goals, of course why not set some financial resolutions? Consider these suggestions: Boost your retirement account contributions. If your income will rise this year, consider putting more money into your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k), 403(b) and 457(b). You typically contribute pre-tax dollars to your plan, so, the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. Plus, your money can have tax-deferred growth potential. Dont over-react to the headlines. Lately, youve heard a lot about the fiscal cliff, political paralysis, the debt ceiling and other Really Scary Topics. These issues are not insignificant but should they keep you from investing? After all, in any given year, you wont have to look hard to find warnings and negative news events and many people do use these ominous-sounding headlines as a reason to head to the investment sidelines for a while. But if youre not investing, youre unquestionably missing out on opportunities to make progress toward your financial goals. So, instead of focusing on the news of the day, make your investment decisions based on the fundamentals of those investments you may be considering, along with your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Keep whittling away your debt. Over the past few years, Americans have done a good job of lowering their debt burdens. Of course, the economy is still tough, and it can be challenging to avoid taking on new debts. But the less debt you have, the more you can invest for your retirement and other important objectives. Rebalance your portfolio to accommodate your risk tolerance. If you spend too much time worrying about the ups and downs of your investments, then your portfolios potential for volatility may be too great for your individual risk tolerance. On the other hand, if you continually see little growth in your holdings, even when the financial markets are going strong, you may be investing too conservatively especially if you are willing to take on some calculated risk to potentially boost your returns. So review your portfolio at least once in 2013 to see if it needs to be rebalanced to fit your risk tolerance. Get some help Navigating the investment world by yourself is not easy. For one thing, theres a lot to know different types of investments, changing tax laws, the effects of inflation, interest rate movements, and much more. Furthermore, when youre making investment decisions on your own, you may have a hard time being objective so you might end up investing with your heart, and not your head. he need for knowledge and objectivity point to the advantages of working with an experienced financial professional someone who understands both the financial markets and your individual needs and goals. These arent the only financial resolutions you could make for 2013 but if you follow through on them, you may well need to make fewer ones when 2014 rolls around. Prominent Marblehead citizen joins bank board of directors

The Marblehead Bank, the Peninsulas only community bank with local headquarters, is pleased to announce the addition of a new member to their Board of Directors. John E. Starcher of Marblehead has accepted the role of board member for The Marblehead Bank. John brings a unique connection to the local community through his role as the owner of a small local business, Starcher Enterprises. In addition, he has ties to the Marblehead community as President Pro-Tem of the Marblehead Village Council, said William Tuttamore, President of the Marblehead Bank. Joining a six member board comprised of business leaders, community citizens and shareholders, John brings a broad knowledge of governance and a sharp focus on local issues. The Marblehead Bank is committed to the Marblehead Peninsula and the greater Ottawa County area and the Board of directors, now including John, will continue the strong guidance for our bank, stated President Tuttamore. Mr. Starcher replaces longtime board member and past Bank President David King who has retired and moved out of the area. I wish to thank Dave for his many years of dedicated service to the board and know that his retirement from the board creates new opportunities to be with his family, said Tuttamore. Mr. Starcher will also serve as a Director for the banks holding company, Marblehead Bancorp. The Marblehead Bank is stronger than ever and we have just completed our 105th anniversary. Adding John Starcher to this committed Board of Directors enables us to position the bank for the next steps in our successful history, said Thomas Lane, Chairman of The Marblehead Bank Board of Directors.

Good news on the home front continues in November

BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Home sales activity throughout the local area and throughout Ohio saw a huge increase in the month of November, according to the Ohio Association of Realtors. Home sales in the area covered by the Firelands Association of Realtors (Erie, Ottawa and Huron Counties) jumped 34.3% in November of 2012 compared to November of 2011. Dollar volume went up over 50% to over $22-million compared to under $15-million last year. The final piece of good news was an increase in average sale price from just over $100,000 in 2011 to over $116,000 in November of 2012. Thanks in large measure to the strong growth in November, the statistics continue to be encouraging for the year overall with the number of units sold in the Firelands area up by 6.9%; dollar volume up 12% and the average sale price up almost 5%. The local numbers are not as good in comparison to the statewide figures reported by OAR. In Ohio, the number of units sold in November jumped over 23%, the dollar volume went up over 35% and the average sale price was up 8.5% for the month. Ohio is showing strong gains in the first 11 months of 2012 also. Across the Buckeye State were building a solid foundation for a sustainable growing housing marketplace going forward, said Robert Miller, president of the Ohio Association of Realtors. The Ohio housing market is continuing to make significant progress in its attempt to fully recover from the economic downturn of a few years ago.

Edgewood Manor wins BBB Torch Award

Edgewood Manor has been named the winner of the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio & Southeast Michigans 2012 Torch Award for ethics in the workplace. The award was given at an event in November attended by over 300 people at the Hilton Garden Inn, Perrysburg. This prestigious recognition was given t0 four companies based on employee size and two non-profits. There were over 100 nominations in total. On behalf of the team at Edgewood Manor, Marketing Director Carrie McGlothlin accepted the award. In her acceptance she said many skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers offer many of the same services and added, In most facilities, you will find nurses who can run IVs and administer medication, nursing Assistants who can help a resident get out of bed and dressed for the day. You will find a rehabilitation department that can offer physical and occupational therapy, a business office that can tell you what your insurance will cover and a nursing home administrator who will hang their license on the wall so the facility is in compliance. But what you will NOT find anywhere else is the nursing team, led by a Director of Nursing who started her career in this facility 35 years ago; a half dozen nursing assistants who have dedicated themselves to this facility for over 25 years; a business office that will walk you through every step of the insurance and financial process and attend meetings with you to help you understand; an award-winning therapy team, lead by a director so passionate because he knows first hand what the benefits of rehabilitation can do; and an administrator who is a first-class example of integrity, hard work and dedication leading her team to success they only dreamed of. McGlothlin also added, The healthcare industry is getting a lot of attention right now and while I will not even try to guess what the solutions will be, one thing is for certain. There is a great deal of uncertainty in what lies ahead for us. We have had significant cuts in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement in recent years, and still we are running an ethically responsible business. We learn to do more with less everyday, but we treat people with integrity and continue to be a valuable resource for our community. I know I speak for our entire team when I say to be

recognized by the Better Business Bureau with this Torch award is a wonderful accomplishment, to recognize the work we do each and every day. To learn more about Edgewood Manor, please call Carrie McGlothlin at 419-734-5506 or visit 1330 S. Fulton Street, Port Clinton.
