X Zone Radio Show 26 Hour LIVE Broadcast A Success!

Veteran Canadian Broadcaster, Rob McConnell Hosted 26 Hour Live X Zone Broadcast Special
Hamilton, Ontario: Over the 20 years that The X Zone Radio/TV Show has been broadcasting, we have tried to be the voice of reason, giving the paranormal and new age / spiritual communities continuous reality checks, thus holding them responsible for the claims that they so freely make without care and many times regard for others.

On Thursday, December 20 at 23:19 p.m. Eastern, Rob McConnell, host, executive producer and creator of The X Zone Radio/TV Show took to the airwaves for a 26 hour L*I*V*E broadcast as part of his mission to dispel the hype and the fears of people, young and old, that the world would not be be ending on December 21 2012 at 11:11:11 Eastern. McConnell remembers the hype of Y2K and the fear that it spread and the lives that were lost when a member of the broadcast community of a late night show started reporting that there was a UFO in the tail of the Hale Bopp comet. Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religion based in San Diego, California, founded in the early 1970s and led by Marshall Applewhite (19311997) and Bonnie Nettles (19271985). On March 26, 1997, police discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group who had committed suicide in order to reach what they believed was an alien space craft following the Comet HaleBopp, which was at its brightest. Throughout the 26 hour broadcast, McConnell kept his eyes on the breaking news from around the world from the main broadcast studio of REL-MAR McConnell Media Company in Hamilton, Ontario, surrounded by monitors, in a studio that resembles NASAs

Mission Control Center. Guest from around the world every hour brought to the broadcast, not only their expertise in fields of the paranormal, parapsychology, and psychology but also live reports on any breaking events from where in the world they were reporting. From Scotland to Australia, from Hamilton to South Africa and all points in between, all went without any sign of the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse, Planet Nibiru, a mass UFO invasion, a massive meteor strike, nor was there any effect whatsoever from the much publicized Galactic Alignment which New Agers claimed would cause chaos and the reverse of the Earths electro-magnetic field. Although the End of the Mayan Calendar and Galactic Alignment were nonevents, it did bring to light that the New agers and Members of the Paranormal Community need to be held accountable for their actions now and in the future. No longer can society sit back and watch as misinformation is spread around the world to people of all ages through the internet and the millions of books that are sold by selfproclaimed authors and publishers who only have one goal, and that is to manipulate the public into buying their products and wares. .....(Continues on Page 2)

Freedom of speech is a right as well as a privilege that is enjoyed by those who lives in a democratic society. However, freedom must be served with responsibility when it comes to the amount of garbage that is infiltrating the minds of those who read the contents of the largest septic tank ever created by man - the internet. There are those who believe that the governments of the world are preparing a global takeover of the internet where the policing of the net would result in the shutting down or cancellation of websites that spread hate, fear, false information, slander and libel. These same people fear that the freedom of speech that is for much of the time, abused by people who broadcast their unregulated content on internet audio and video streams. Many responsible, law abiding people are all for the regulation and policing of the internet. Companies, corporations, institutions, and broadcasters have rules and regulations to follow, so why should those who use the internet to spread misinformation or to iCast their audio and video streams not be responsible and subject to the same rules, regulations and policies as those who operate off the internet and to be held accountable for their words and actions? The number of cases that have been reported to authorities because of electronic bullying using email, texting and the new social media has increased drastically. This is just the beginning of what we will be seeing as electronic handheld devices adapt to an electronic hungry society. Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End

Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End

From NASA
You're reading this story, because the world didn't end on Dec. 21, 2012. Despite reports of an ancient Maya prophecy, a mysterious planet on a collision course with Earth, or a reverse in Earth's rotation, we're still here. THE MAYAN CONNECTION: "The whole thing was a misconception from the very beginning," says Dr. John Carlson, director of the Center for Archaeoastronomy. "The Maya calendar did not end on Dec. 21, 2012, and there were no Maya prophecies foretelling the end of the world on that date." The truth, says Carlson, is more interesting than fiction. Carlson is a hard-nosed scientist--a radio astronomer who earned his degree studying distant galaxies. He became interested in the 2012 phenomenon in the early 70s when he attended a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and learned about the lost civilization of the Maya. Where the rain forests of Mesoamerica now stand, a great civilization once flourished. The people of Maya society built vast cities, ornate temples, and towering pyramids. At its peak around 800 A.D., the population numbered more than 2,000 people per square mile in the cities -- comparable to modern Los Angeles County. The Maya mastered astronomy, developed an elaborate written language, and left behind exquisite artifacts. Most compelling to Carlson was the Maya's expansive sense of time. "The times Mayas used dwarf any time scales currently used by modern astronomers," he explains. "According to our science, the Big Bang occurred 13.7 billion years ago. There are dates and time references in Mayan ruins that stretch back a billion billion times farther than that." The Maya Long Count Calendar was designed to keep track of such long intervals. "It is the most complex calendar system ever developed by people anywhere." Written using modern typography, the Long Count Calendar resembles the odometer in a car. It's a modified base-20 system in which rotating digits represent powers of 20 days. Because the digits rotate, the calendar can "roll over" and repeat itself; this repetition is key to the 2012 phenomenon. According to Maya theology, the world was created 5125 years ago, on a date modern people would write "August 11, 3114 BC." At the time, the Maya calendar looked like this: 13.0.0.0.0

On Dec. 21, 2012, it is exactly the same: 13.0.0.0.0 In the language of Maya scholars, 13 Bak'tuns or 13 times 144,000 days elapsed between the two dates. This was a significant interval in Maya theology, but, stresses Carlson, not a destructive one. None of the thousands of ruins, tablets, and standing stones that archeologists have examined foretell an end of the world. Modern science agrees. NASA experts recently gathered in a Google hangout to review their own findings with the public. Don Yeomans, head of NASA's NearEarth Object Program, stated that no known asteroids or comets are on a collision course with Earth. Neither is a rogue planet coming to destroy us. "If there were anything out there like a planet headed for Earth," said NASA astrobiologist David Morrison, "it would already be [one of the] brightest objects in the sky. Everybody on Earth could see it. You don't need to ask the government, just go out and look. Its not there. Lika Guhathakurta, head of NASA's Living with a Star Program, says the sun is not a threat, either. "The sun has been flaring for billions of years--long before the Maya even existed--and it has never once destroyed the world." "Right now the sun is approaching the maximum of its 11-year activity cycle," she added, "but this is the wimpiest solar cycle of the past 50 years. Reports to the contrary are exaggerated." What would an ancient Maya think about all this hoopla? Carlson believes he knows the answer. "If we could time warp a Maya to the present day, they would say that Dec. 21, 2012, is a very important date. Many Maya believed that their gods who created the world 5125 years ago would return. One of them in particular, an enigmatic deity named Bolon Yokte' K'uh, would conduct old rites of passage, to set space and time in order, and to regenerate the cosmos." The world would be refreshed, not destroyed. "I have been waiting to experience this day for more than 30 years," he says. For him, "experiencing Dec. 21, 2012" means visiting the Maya homeland in the Yucatan, and thinking back to the height of Maya civilization, when ancient humans contemplated expanses of time orders of

magnitude beyond modern horizons. Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012. Answer (A):The world will not end in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012. Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012? A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012 and linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012. Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012? A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar. Q: Is NASA predicting a "total blackout" of Earth on Dec. 23 to Dec. 25? A: Absolutely not. Neither NASA nor any other scientific organization is predicting such a blackout. The false reports on this issue claim that some sort of "alignment of the Universe" will cause a blackout. There is no such alignment (see next question). Some versions of this rumor cite an emergency preparedness message from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. This is simply a message encouraging people to be prepared for emergencies, recorded as part of a wider government preparedness campaign. It never mentions a blackout. Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End

Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End
Continued from Page 3
Q: Could planets align in a way that impacts Earth? A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence THE GALACTIC ALIGNMENT: One of the most bizarre theories about 2012 has built up with very little attention to facts. This idea holds that a cosmic alignment of the sun, Earth, the center of our galaxy -- or perhaps the galaxy's thick dust clouds -- on the winter solstice could for some unknown reason lead to destruction. Such alignments can occur but these are a regular occurrence and can cause no harm (and, indeed, will not even be at its closest alignment during the 2012 solstice.) The details are as follows: Viewed far from city lights, a glowing path called the Milky Way can be seen arching across the starry sky. This path is formed from the light of millions of stars we cannot see individually. It coincides with the mid plane of our galaxy, which is why our galaxy is also named the Milky Way. Thick dust clouds also populate the galaxy. And while infrared telescopes can see them clearly, our eyes detect these dark clouds only as irregular patches where they dim or block the Milky Way's faint glow. The most prominent dark lane stretches from the constellations Cygnus to Sagittarius and is often called the Great Rift, sometimes the Dark Rift. Another impressive feature of our galaxy lies unseen in Sagittarius: the galactic center, about 28,000 light-years away, which hosts a black hole weighing some four million times the sun's mass. The claim for 2012 links these two pieces of astronomical fact with a third -- the position of the sun near the galactic center on Dec. 21, the winter solstice for the Northern Hemisphere -- to produce something that makes no astronomical sense at all. As Earth makes its way around the sun, the sun appears to move against the background stars, which is why the visible constellations slowly change with the seasons. On Dec. 21, 2012, the sun will pass about 6.6 degrees north of the galactic center -- that's a distance that looks to the eye to be about 13 times the full moon's apparent size -- and it's actually closer a couple of days earlier. There are different claims about why this bodes us ill, but they boil down to the coincidence of the solstice with the sun entering the Dark Rift somehow portending disaster or the mistaken notion that the sun and Earth becoming aligned with the black hole in the galactic center allows some kind of massive gravitational pull on Earth. The first strike against this theory is that the solstice itself does not correlate to any movements of the stars or anything in the

universe beyond Earth. It just happens to be the day that Earth's North Pole is tipped farthest from the sun. Second, Earth is not within range of strong gravitational effects from the black hole at the center of the galaxy since gravitational effects decrease as the square of the distance from it. Earth is 93 million miles from the sun and 165 quadrillion miles from the Milky Way's black hole. The sun and the moon (a smaller mass, but much closer) are by far the most dominant gravitational forces on Earth. Throughout the course of the year, our distance from the Milky Way's black hole changes by about one part in 900 million not nearly enough to cause a real change in gravity's pull. Moreover, we're actually nearest to the galactic center in the summer, not at the winter solstice. Third, the sun appears to enter the part of the sky occupied by the Dark Rift every year at the same time, and its arrival there in Dec. 2012 portends precisely nothing. Enjoy the solstice, by all means, and don't let the Dark Rift, alignments, solar flares, magnetic field reversals, potential impacts or alleged Maya end-of-the-world predictions get in the way. Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction? A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles. Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the Earth's crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours? A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but

that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesnt cause any harm to life on Earth. Scientists believe a magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia. MORE ABOUT THE POLAR SHIFT: Scientists understand that Earth's magnetic field has flipped its polarity many times over the millennia. In other words, if you were alive about 800,000 years ago, and facing what we call north with a magnetic compass in your hand, the needle would point to 'south.' This is because a magnetic compass is calibrated based on Earth's poles. The N-S markings of a compass would be 180 degrees wrong if the polarity of today's magnetic field were reversed. Many doomsday theorists have tried to take this natural geological occurrence and suggest it could lead to Earth's destruction. But would there be any dramatic effects? The answer, from the geologic and fossil records we have from hundreds of past magnetic polarity reversals, seems to be 'no.' Reversals are the rule, not the exception. Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although it has been more than twice that long since the last reversal. A reversal happens over hundreds or thousands of years, and it is not exactly a clean back flip. Magnetic fields morph and push and pull at one another, with multiple poles emerging at odd latitudes throughout the process. Scientists estimate reversals have happened at least hundreds of times over the past three billion years. And while reversals have happened more frequently in "recent" years, when dinosaurs walked Earth a reversal was more likely to happen only about every one million years. (Continued on Page 5)

Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End

Beyond 2012: Why the World Didn't End
Continued from Page 4
Sediment cores taken from deep ocean floors can tell scientists about magnetic polarity shifts, providing a direct link between magnetic field activity and the fossil record. The Earths magnetic field determines the magnetization of lava as it is laid down on the ocean floor on either side of the Mid-Atlantic Rift where the North American and European continental plates are spreading apart. As the lava solidifies, it creates a record of the orientation of past magnetic fields much like a tape recorder records sound. The last time that Earth's poles flipped in a major reversal was about 780,000 years ago, in what scientists call the BrunhesMatuyama reversal. The fossil record shows no drastic changes in plant or animal life. Deep ocean sediment cores from this period also indicate no changes in glacial activity, based on the amount of oxygen isotopes in the cores. This is also proof that a polarity reversal would not affect the rotation axis of Earth, as the planet's rotation axis tilt has a significant effect on climate and glaciation and any change would be evident in the glacial record. Earth's polarity is not a constant. Unlike a classic bar magnet, or the decorative magnets on your refrigerator, the matter governing Earth's magnetic field moves around. Geophysicists are pretty sure that the reason Earth has a magnetic field is because its solid iron core is surrounded by a fluid ocean of hot, liquid metal. This process can also be modeled with supercomputers. Ours is, without hyperbole, a dynamic planet. The flow of liquid iron in Earth's core creates electric currents, which in turn create the magnetic field. So while parts of Earth's outer core are too deep for scientists to measure directly, we can infer movement in the core by observing changes in the magnetic field. The magnetic north pole has been creeping northward by more than 600 miles (1,100 km) since the early 19th century, when explorers first located it precisely. It is moving faster now, actually, as scientists estimate the pole is migrating northward about 40 miles per year, as opposed to about 10 miles per year in the early 20th century. Another doomsday hypothesis about a geomagnetic flip plays up fears about incoming solar activity. This suggestion mistakenly assumes that a pole reversal would momentarily leave Earth without the magnetic field that protects us from solar flares and coronal mass ejections from the sun. But, while Earth's magnetic field can indeed weaken and strengthen over time, there is no indication that it has ever disappeared completely. A weaker field would certainly lead to a small increase in solar radiation on Earth as well as a beautiful display of aurora at lower latitudes -- but nothing deadly. Moreover, even with a weakened magnetic field, Earth's thick atmosphere also offers protection against the sun's incoming particles. The science shows that magnetic pole reversal is in terms of geologic time scales a common occurrence that happens gradually over millennia. While the conditions that cause

polarity reversals are not entirely predictable the north pole's movement could subtly change direction, for instance there is nothing in the millions of years of geologic record to suggest that any of the 2012 doomsday scenarios connected to a pole reversal should be taken seriously. A reversal might, however, be good business for magnetic compass manufacturers. Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012? A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA Near-Earth Object Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012. Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of the world ending in 2012? A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012. Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012? A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar

storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history. []

The Great 2012 Doomsday Scare

The Great 2012 Doomsday Scare
by E. C. Krupp, Director of Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles
The year 2012 is acting like a badly behaved celebrity. Frightful rumors and gossip are spreading. Already more than a half dozen books are marketing, to eager fans, astronomical fears about 2012 End Times. Opening in theaters on Friday, Nov. 13, will be 2012, a $200-million disaster movie that seems designed to break all records for disaster spectacles -- with cracking continents, plunging asteroids, burning cities, and a tsunami throwing an aircraft carrier through the White House. The movie's ominous slogan: "Find out the truth." Two other major movies about the 2012 doomsday are also reported to be in the works. Anyone who cruises the internet or allnight talk radio knows why. The ancient Maya of Mexico and Guatemala kept a calendar that is about to roll up the red carpet of time, swing the solar system into transcendental alignment with the heart of the Milky Way, and turn Earth into a bowling pin for a rogue planet heading down our alley for a strike. None of it is true. People you know, however, are likely becoming a bit afraid that modern astronomy and Maya secrets are indeed conspiring to bring our doom. If people know youre an astronomer, they will soon be asking you all about it. Here is what you need to know. Birth of a Notion We"ve had similar scares in the recent past, but none quite like this. The last time the world got all worked up over the mystical turning of a calendar was the false Millennium of Jan. 1, 2000. Never mind the actual Y2K computer-date bug. True-believer authors (and their imitators) published scary and/or hopeful books about the moment's prophetic potential to catch an immense cosmic wave and change everything for either good or ill. Borrowing a forecast from Nostradamus, the 16th-century French riddler, author Charles Berlitz predicted catastrophe in his 1981 book Doomsday 1999. Berlitz (fresh off books on Atlantis and the Bermuda Triangle), warned that 1999 could inflict flood, famine, pollution and a shift of Earth's magnetic poles. He also spotlighted the planetary alignment of May 5, 2000, and warned that it could bring solar flares, severe earthquakes, "land changes" and "seismic explosions." In the 1990s an entire "Earth Changes" movement swelled into being as the end of the century neared, with all sorts of Millennial expectations -- earthquakes, plagues, polar axis shifts, continents sliding into the sea, Atlantis rising and more. In England, the Sun tabloid predicted a "marvelous millennium of joy, peace, prosperity." When Jan. 1, 2000, came and went with nothing worse than ski-lift passes printing the date as 1900, the focus shifted to "5/5/2000" several months later. Most believers in the

power of planetary alignments forgot the failure of earlier lineups to induce disaster. The "Jupiter Effect" cataclysm predicted for March 10, 1982 (named for the 1974 book about it by John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann) commanded headlines but never materialized. Throughout history, end-of-the-world movements missing their mark number in the "hundreds of thousands at the very least, says Richard Landes, historian at Boston University and director of its Center for Millennial Studies. But people eager for the world to end are not to be denied, and this time, of course, all will be different. The Rollover What exactly is the Maya calendar about to do? On Dec. 21, 2012, it will display the equivalent of a string of zeros, like the odometer turning over on your car, with the close of something like a millennium. In Maya calendrics, however, it's not the end of a thousand years. It's the end of Baktun 13. The Maya calendar was based on multiple cycles of time, and the baktun was one of them. A baktun is 144,000 days: a little more than 394 years. Scholars have deciphered how the Maya calendar worked from historical texts and ancient inscriptions, and they have accurately correlated so-called Maya Long Count dates with the equivalent dates in our calendar. Just as we number our years counting from a historically and culturally significant event (the presumed birth year of Christ), Maya times were numbered from a date endowed with religious and cosmic significance: the creation date of the present world order. A Long Count date is the tally of days from that mythic startup. Most experts think the start point corresponds to Aug. 11, 3114 B.C. Most of the Maya calendar intervals accumulate as multiples of 20. An interval of 7,200 days (360 20) was known as a katun. It takes 20 katuns to complete a baktun (20 7,200 = 144,000 days). Although some ancient inscriptions turn 13 baktuns into an important reset milestone, others imply that the calendar simply keeps running. For instance, it takes 20

baktuns to make a pictun. No one paid much attention to the end of Baktun 13 until fairly recently. In 1975 Frank Waters, a romantic and speculative author, devoted a brief section to the subject in his book Mexico Mystique. He identified the 13-baktun interval as a "Mayan Great Cycle," overestimated its duration as 5,200 years, and equated five such cycles with five legendary eras, each of which ends in the worlds destruction and rebirth. There is no genuine Maya tradition behind any of this. Waters also miscalculated the date when the calendar would supposedly pull down the shades. "The end of the Great Cycle . . . will occur Dec. 24, 2011 A.D.," he announced, when the world "will be destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes." Exact date aside, the doomsday ball was now rolling. Another book in 1975 also spotlighted the Maya calendric roundup. Dennis and Terence McKenna discussed it in The Invisible Landscape: Mind, Hallucinogens, and the I Ching. That book at least got the Baktun-13 end date right: Dec. 21, 2012. It also noted that the date is the winter solstice, when the Sun will be "in the constellation Sagittarius, only about 3 degrees from the Galactic Center, which, also coincidentally, is within 2 degrees of the ecliptic." The McKennas continued, "Because the winter solstice node is precessing, it is moving closer and closer to the point on the ecliptic where it will eclipse the galactic center." In reality this event will never happen, but it hardly matters. The McKennas linked the whole arrangement with the concept of renewal and called 2012 a moment of "potential transformative opportunity." (Continued on Page 8)

Matthew Stien - When Disaster Stikes

Disasters often strike without warning and leave a trail of destruction in their wake. Yet armed with the right tools and information, survivors can fend for themselves and get through even the toughest circumstances. Matthew Stein's When Disaster Strikes provides a thorough, practical guide for how to prepare for and react in many of life's most unpredictable scenarios. In this disaster-preparedness manual, he outlines the materials you'll need-from food and water, to shelter and energy, to first-aid and survival skills-to help you safely live through the worst. When Disaster Strikes covers how to find and store food, water, and clothing, as well as the basics of installing back-up power and lights. You'll learn how to gather and sterilize water, build a fire, treat injuries in an emergency, and use alternative medical sources when conventional ones are unavailable. Stein instructs you on the smartest responses to natural disasters-such as fires, earthquakes, hurricanes and floods-how to keep warm during winter storms, even how to protect yourself from attack or other dangerous situations. With this comprehensive guide in hand, you can be sure to respond quickly, correctly, and confidently when a crisis threatens.
Author, engineer, designer, and green builder, Mat Stein was born and raised in Burlington Vermont. His parents started him walking on skis at age three, hiking at age 5, backpacking at age seven, hunting at age 10, rock climbing and extreme skiing at age 11. The Green mountains of Vermont, White mountains of New Hampshire, and the Adirondacks of upstate New York were his four-season childhood play grounds. After graduating from MIT in 1978, where he majored in Mechanical Engineering, the lure of the real mountains of the west drew Mat across the country to California. A thirty year interest in alternative healing got its start while Mat was still a freshman at MIT, when he witnessed the miraculous remote healing of a crippled friend (big shake up to his scientific Billiard Ball Theory of the Universe way of thinking). Over the years, this interest expanded to the use of herbs, homeopathy, and other alternatives to heal medical conditions that werent responding to western style medicine. The engineer, carpenter, and backwoodsman sides of Mat found peace, harmony, and synergy through renewable energy, green building, and self-reliance. Today, Mat owns and operates Stein Design and Construction, providing product design services, engineering analysis, and green building. It was a true epiphany that started Mat firmly on the path of self-reliance, emergency prep, and sustainability. Around Thanksgiving of 1997, during his morning session of prayer and meditation, in answer to a simple request for guidance and inspiration, Mat received a fully developed story board type of pictorial outline that popped into his head instantaneously. It was the outline for a massive handbook to help people be more self-reliant, live more sustainably, and prepare to weather the coming storms as we pass through this age of uncertainty and change. After three years of work, this cosmic download crystallized into his first book, When Technology Fails. Stein has appeared on numerous radio and television programs and is a repeat guest on Fox News, MSNBC, Lionel, The X Zone Radio Show, Coast-to-Coast AM, and the Thom Hartmann Show. The Great 2012 Doomsday Scare

The Great 2012 Doomsday Scare
Continued from Page 6
Broader interest in 2012 caught on beginning in 1987. In The Mayan Factor: Path Beyond Technology, Jos Argelles (an "artist, poet, and visionary historian" according to the dust jacket) linked the 13-baktun period with an impalpable "beam" from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. According to Argelles, the Maya knew when we entered this beam and when we would leave it, and set their 13-baktun cycle to mark our passage through it accordingly. The beam, he asserted, operates as "invisible galactic life threads" that link people, the planet, the Sun, and the center of the Galaxy. Neither Maya tradition nor modern astronomy supports a belief in any such beam. It stemmed instead from Argelless personal philosophy, which emphasizes "the principle of harmonic resonance." Argelles also concluded that the planets are "orbiting harmonic gyroscopes" that play a role in the coordination of the beam," which advances the development of anything with DNA. The year 2012, therefore, will bring a rosy version of the apocalypse. If this sounds a bit familiar, you're right. In 1987 Argelles and his followers predicted, with worldwide fanfare, that Aug. 1617 of that year would bring a Maya-Galactic "Harmonic Convergence." That event turned into a global phenomenon, with thousands gathering at Earths acupuncture points to create a "synchronized and unified bio-electromagnetic collective battery." Unfortunately, the date passed with nothing more than colorful newspaper stories and a Doonesbury satire. (A character explains earnestly that that the alignment could bring either "mass unification of divine and earth-plane selves," or perhaps nuclear annihilation. "Either way there will probably be a crafts fair.") Galactic Guessing Games Fast-forward to 1995. That year John Major Jenkins packaged several of these themes into Maya Cosmogenesis 2012. According to Jenkins, the winter-solstice point and the centerline of the Galaxy will line up exactly on Dec. 21. Arguing that this motivated the Maya to contrive the calendar to end on that date, Jenkins concludes that it will be "a tremendous transformation and opportunity for spiritual growth, a transition from one world age to another." In fact, astronomy cannot pinpoint such a "galactic alignment" to within a year, much less a day. The alignment depends on the rather arbitrary modern definition of the galactic equator, and/or the visual appearance of the Milky Way. There is no precise definition of the Milky Way's edges -- they are very vague and depend on the clarity of your view. (Jenkins says that he personally established the Milky Ways edges by viewing it from 11,000 feet, far above anywhere the Maya lived.) So to give a precise visual position for its centerline is not meaningful. Jenkins did acknowledge that the winter-solstice Sun actually crosses the center of the Milky Way anytime between 1980 and

2016. Elsewhere he expands this approach zone to a 900-year period, and settles for an imprecise alignment to which Dec. 21, 2012, is arbitrarily and circularly assigned. Real astronomy does not support any match between the Baktun-13 end date and a galactic alignment. The advocates both admit and ignore this discrepancy. It's almost a sidelight that the wintersolstice sun will never actually "eclipse" the galaxy's true center, the pointlike radio source marking the Milky Way's central black hole. Moreover, the winter-solstice sun wont even pass closest to it on the sky for another 200 years. What did the Maya themselves think about End Times? There is no evidence that they saw the calendar and a world age ending in either transcendence or catastrophe on December 21, 2012. Some Maya Long Count texts refer to dates many baktuns past 13 and even into the next pictun and beyond. For instance, an inscription commissioned in the 7th century A.D. by King Pacal of Palenque predicts that an anniversary of his accession would be commemorated on Oct. 15, 4772. In all of the Long Count texts discovered, transcribed, and translated, only one mentions the key date in 2012: Monument 6 at Tortuguero, a Maya site in the Mexican state of Tabasco. The text is damaged, but what remains does not imply the end of time. The Secret NASA Conspiracy Some advocates for the 2012 catastrophe say that what will actually cause the devastation is an alignment of planets. There is no planet alignment on the winter solstice in 2012. Nonetheless, advocates of doom connect the fictional alignment to astrological predictions or groundless claims about a reversal of Earth's magnetic field and unprecedented solar storms. Many internet postings and guests on all-night apocalyptic radio have elaborated on these themes. In particular, several threads of irrational thought have created an internet phantom, the secret planet Nibiru. It's the bowling ball, and

Earth is the pin. There is no such planet, though it is often equated with Eris, a plutoid orbiting safely and permanently beyond Pluto. Some insist, however, that a NASA conspiracy is in play and that Nibiru, looming in on the approach, can already be seen in broad daylight from the Southern Hemisphere. It was supposed to become visible from the Northern Hemisphere, too, by last May, but like a fickle blind date, it stood up those awaiting it. Others on the Web, confused about the supposed alignment of the winter-solstice sun with the Milky Way's center, have declared that the Sun is now plummeting to the Milky Ways center and dragging Earth with it. The predicted result? Earths polar axis will shift. Most of what's claimed for 2012 relies on wishful thinking, wild pseudoscientific folly, ignorance of astronomy, and a level of paranoia worthy of Night of the Living Dead. So maybe the Maya were on to us after all. The clock is ticking. And its the end of the world as we know it. []

Nibiru and Doomsday 2012

Nibiru and Doomsday 2012: Questions and Answers
Stories about the fictional planet Nibiru and predictions of doomsday in December 2012 have blossomed on the Internet. There are more than 300 books listed on Amazon.com dealing with the 2012 doomsday. Ask an Astrobiologist has received thousands of questions about Nibiru and 2012, with more than 500 answers posted. Following is a list of the most popular Twenty Questions organized in a logical succession and answered in some detail. 1. What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in December 2012? The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. Zecharia Sitchin, who wrote fiction about the ancient Mesopotamian civilization of Sumer, claimed in several books (e.g., The Twelfth Planet, published in 1976) that he had found and translated Sumerian documents that identify the planet Nibiru, orbiting the Sun every 3600 years. These Sumerian fables include stories of ancient astronauts visiting Earth from a civilization of aliens called the Anunnaki http://www.sitchiniswrong.com/. Sitchin suggested a return of Nibiru and the Anunnaki sometime this century. Then Nancy Lieder, a self-declared psychic who claims she is channeling aliens, wrote on her website Zetatalk that the inhabitants of a fictional planet around the star Zeta Reticuli warned her that the Earth was in danger from Planet X or Nibiru http://www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/planet x/. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of the Mayan calendar longcount at the winter solstice in 2012 hence the predicted doomsday date on December 21, 2012. 2. The Sumerians were the first great civilization, and they made many accurate astronomical predictions, including the existence of the planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. So why should we not believe their predictions about Nibiru? Nibiru is a name in Babylonian astrology sometimes associated with the god Marduk. Nibiru appears as a minor character in the Babylonian creation poem Enuma Elish as recorded in the library of Assurbanipal, King of Assyria (668-627 BCE). Sumer flourished much earlier, from about the 23rd century to the 17th century BCE. The claims that Nibiru is a planet and was known to the Sumerians are contradicted by scholars who (unlike Zecharia Sitchin) actually study and translate the written records of ancient Mesopotamia. Sumer was indeed a great civilization, important for the development of agriculture, water management, urban life, and especially writing. However, they left very few records dealing with

astronomy. Certainly they did not know about the existence of Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. They also had no understanding that the planets orbited the Sun, an idea that first developed in ancient Greece two millennia after the end of Sumer. Claims that Sumerians had a sophisticated astronomy, or that they had a planet named Nibiru, are the product of Sitchins imagination. 3. How can you deny the existence of Nibiru when discovered it in 1983 and the story appeared in leading newspapers? At that time you called it Planet X, and later it was named Xena or Eris. IRAS (the NASA Infrared Astronomy Satellite, which carried out a sky survey for 10 months in 1983) discovered many infrared sources, but none of them was Nibiru or Planet X or any other objects in the outer solar system spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/tchester/iras/no_te nth_planet_yet.html. Briefly, IRAS cataloged 350,000 infrared sources, and initially many of these sources were unidentified (which was the point, of course, of making such a survey). All of these observations have been followed up by subsequent studies with more powerful instruments both on the ground and in space. The rumor about a tenth planet erupted in 1984 after a scientific paper was published in Astrophysical Journal Letters titled Unidentified point sources in the IRAS minisurvey, which discussed several infrared sources with no counterparts. But these mystery objects were subsequently found to be distant galaxies (except one, which was a wisp of infrared cirrus), as published in 1987. No IRAS source has ever turned out to be a planet. A good discussion of this whole issue is to be found on Phil Plaits website www.badastronomy.com/bad/misc/planetx/scie nce.html#iras. The bottom line is that NASA astronomers never discovered or announced a planet. To an astronomer, persistent claims about a planet that is nearby but invisible are just plain silly. 4. Maybe we should be asking about Planet X

or Eris, not Nibiru. And what about the giant planet Tyche? Planet X is an oxymoron when applied to a real object. The term has been used by astronomers over the past century for a possible or suspected object. Once the object is found, it is given a real name, as was done with Pluto and Eris, both of which were at some time referred to as Planet X. If a new object turns out to be not real, or not a planet, then you wont hear about it again. If it is real, it is not called Planet X. Eris is one of several dwarf planets in the outer solar system, found by astronomers using conventional ground-based telescopes. All of the dwarf planets are on orbits that will never bring them near Earth. Like Pluto, Eris is smaller than our Moon. It is very far away, and its orbit never brings it within 4 billion miles. Tyche, in contrast, is supposed to be a giant planet (with several times the mass of Jupiter) in the far outer solar system http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyche_). It was suggested in 1999 from an analysis of the orbits of comets. It has never been seen or detected, and most astronomers do not believe it exists. It if were real, even at a very great distance from the Sun, it should have been picked up in recent infrared sky surveys such as WISE http://en.wikipedia.org/w iki/Widefield_Infrared_Survey_Explorer. Even if such an object exists, it can have no effect on the planets or their orbits. (Continued on Page 10) The Java Jive: - Americans drink about 400 million cups of coffee per day - or 146 billion cups every year. - Coffee has absolutely no nutritional value. - Legend has it that coffee was discovered over 1,000 years ago when an Abyssinian goatherder noticed his goats prancing on their hind legs after sampling the fruit of a wild coffee tree. He tried the raw berries himself and began dancing wildly. - Four out of five adults in the US drink coffee. They put away an average of three cups a day, which ads up to about a third of the worlds supply.

5. Do you deny that built a South Pole Telescope to track Nibiru? Why else would they build a telescope at the South Pole? And wasnt built as part of a defense against Nibiru? There is a telescope at the South Pole, but it was not built by NASA and is not used to study Nibiru. The South Pole Telescope was supported by the National Science Foundation, and it is a radio telescope, not an optical instrument. It cannot take images or photos. You can look it up on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Pole_Telesc ope. The Antarctic is a great place for astronomical infrared and short-wave-radio observations, and it also has the advantage that objects can be observed continuously without the interference of the day-night cycle. I should add that it is impossible to imagine a geometry in which an object can be seen only from the South Pole. Even if it were due south of the Earth, it could be seen from the entire southern hemisphere. As to HAARP, that is a favorite subject on conspiracy theory websites. HAARP is an upper atmosphere research instrument operated by the University of Alaska and primarily funded by the U.S. Defense D e p a r t m e n t http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Frequency_ Active_Auroral_Research_Program. The woowoo crowd seems to think it was built to cause earthquakes. It has nothing to do with Nibiru or 2012. 6. There are many photos and videos of Nibiru on the Internet. Isnt that proof that it exists? Many of the photos and videos on the Internet that were taken two or three years ago were of some feature near the Sun (apparently supporting the claim that Nibiru was hiding behind the Sun). These are actually false images of the Sun caused by internal reflections in the lens, often called lens flare. You can identify them easily by the fact that they appear diametrically opposite the real solar image, as if reflected across the center of the image. This is especially obvious in videos, where as the camera moves, the false image dances about always exactly opposite the real image. Similar lens flare is a source of many UFO photos taken at night with strong light sources such as streetlights in the frame. I am surprised that people dont recognize this common photo artifact. There are also photos showing something nearly as large and bright as the Sun (a second sun). This is a crazy idea; if there were a second sun every one could see it (and we would be getting very hot!). It amazes me that people will go on at great length about a second sun without stepping outside and looking for themselves. If you cant see it yourself with your own eyes, it doesnt exist! One widely reported telescopic photo

www.greatdreams.com/nibiru-possible.jpg shows two views of an expanding gas cloud far beyond the solar system, which is not moving; you can see this from the fact that the stars are the same in both pictures. A sharp-eyed reader of this website identified these photos as a light shell around the star V838 Mon. Wikipedia has a nice write-up and a beautiful photo of it from H u b b l e http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V838_Monoceroti s. Another high school student was initially impressed by posted images of a red blob that were said to be of Nibiru, until he found that he could easily duplicate the photo using Photoshop. Other people see the bright planets Venus and Jupiter in the sky and think they are Nibiru. Do they think they have discovered something new that no one else is seeing? There are more than 100,000 amateur astronomers from all over the world. They are constantly watching the sky, and not one of them has reported seeing Nibiru or any other rogue object. 7. Can you explain the fact that the area at (5h 53m 27s, -6 10 58) has been blackened out in Google Sky and Microsoft Telescope? People suggest that these have been blackened out because those are the coordinates where Nibiru is located at present. Several people have asked me about this blank rectangle in Orion in Google Sky, or another similar blank in Virgo http://www.2012hoax.org/google-sky. Google Sky and other Internet maps are compilations of astronomical photos of the sky. Many of them are photos taken more than 50 years ago in the Palomar Sky Survey; others are more recent from the Sloan Digital Survey. The problem is that many people think Google sky is a live view of the sky today. They write to me about searching Google Sky for Nibiru or other rogue objects, but even if these were real they would not be visible in these old data. The entire premise that Google Sky can be used to find images of Nibiru, or that blanks indicate that the authorities are hiding important images of Nibiru, is wrong.

population at ease? There are many objectives of government, but they do not include keeping the population at ease. My experience is that sometimes parts of the government do just the opposite, as in the frequent references to various terrorist threats or warnings about driving accidents on long holiday weekends, which are no more dangerous than any other time. There is a long history of associating bad things with political opponents (older readers will remember the missile gap in the 1960 election, younger ones will note the many current references to who is or is not keeping the U.S. safe from terrorists). Further, social scientists have pointed out that many of our concepts of public panic are the product of Hollywood, while in the real world people have a good record of helping each other in a time of danger. I think everyone also recognizes that keeping bad news secret usually backfires, making the issue even worse when the facts finally come out. In the case of Nibiru, these facts would have come out years ago, if it were real. If Nibiru were real, it would be tracked by thousands of astronomers, amateurs as well a professional. These astronomers are spread all over the world. I know the astronomy community, and these scientists would not keep a secret even if ordered to. It is also worth remembering that most astronomers in the U.S. work for universities, and that academic organizations, not the government, run most of the big telescopes. Even the Hubble Space Telescope is operated by a consortium of universities. NASA and the government get most of their information from these outside astronomers, not the other way around. (Continued on Page 11)

Continued from Page 10
9. Why does the Mayan calendar say the world will end in 2012? I have heard that they have been pretty accurate in the past with other planetary predictions. How can you be sure you know more than they did? Calendars exist for keeping track of the passage of time, not for predicting the future. The Mayan astronomers were clever, and they developed a very complex calendar. Ancient calendars are interesting to historians, but they cannot match the ability we have today to keep track of time, or the precision of the calendars currently in use. The main point, however, is that calendars, whether contemporary or ancient, cannot predict the future of our planet or warn of things to happen on a specific date such as 2012. To further complicate matters, scholars do not agree on when the Mayan calendar long-count turns over. There is no agreed-upon synchronization between the Mayan calendar and ours, which was imported much later from Europe. This supposedly key date in the Mayan calendar may have already happened, or it may lie decades in the future. 10. What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the Earths crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours? Does this have something to do to do with our solar system dipping beneath the galactic equator? A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. It has never happened and never will. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesnt cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway. But they falsely claim that a magnetic reversal is coming in 2012 and that this is the same as, or will trigger, a reversal of rotational poles. The bottom line is: (a) Rotation direction and magnetic polarity are not related. (b) There is no reason to expect a reversal of magnetic polarity any time soon, or to anticipate any bad effects on life when it does eventually happen. A sudden shift in rotational pole with disastrous consequences is impossible. Also, none of this has anything to do with the galactic equator or any of the other nonsense about alignments that appears on many of the conspiracy theory websites. 11. When most of the planets align in 2012 and planet Earth is in the center of the Milky Way, what will the effects of this be on planet

Earth? Could it cause a pole shift, and if so what could we expect? There is no planet alignment in 2012 or any other time in the next several years. In fact, in late 2012 the planets are scattered all over the sky! As to the Earth being in the center of the Milky Way, I dont know what this phrase means. If you are referring to the Milky Way Galaxy, we are rather far toward the edge of this spiral galaxy, some 30,000 light years from the center. We circle the galactic center in a period of 225-250 million years, always keeping approximately the same distance. Concerning a pole shift, I also dont know what this means. If it means some sudden change in the position of the rotation axis of the Earth, then that is impossible, as noted in the answer to Question 10. What many websites do discuss is the alignment of the Earth and Sun with the center of the Milky Way in the constellation of Sagittarius. This happens every December, with no bad consequences, and there is no reason to expect 2012 to be different from any other year. 12. When the Sun and the Earth line up on the galactic plane at the same time with the black hole being in the center couldnt that cause something to happen, due to the fact that the black hole has such a strong gravitational pull. There is a giant black hole in the center of our Milky Way galaxy, and like any concentration of mass it exerts gravitational force on the rest of the Galaxy. However, the galactic center is very far away, approximately 30,000 light years, so it has negligible effects on the solar system or the Earth. There are no special forces from the galactic plane or the galactic center. The only important force that acts on the Earth is the gravitation of the Sun and Moon. As far as the influence of the galactic plane, there is nothing special about this location. The last time the Earth was in the galactic plane was several million years ago. Claims that we are about to cross the galactic plane are untrue. There is a widespread misunderstanding about the gravitational influence of another object on the Earth or other planets, whether it is a distant black hole or a nearby rogue planet. One sees claims often that some object, like Nibiru or Comet Elenin, will cause a pole shift or trigger earthquakes, but that is not the way it works. The only effect of an external gravitational pull is to change the orbits of planets. If there were a massive intruder like Nibiru, it would be altering the orbits of the Earth and other planets, something astronomers would measure immediately. What it wont do is shift the rotational pole or cause earthquakes or other geological events. 13. I have heard that the Earths magnetic field will flip in 2012 just when the strongest level of solar storms in history is predicted to take place. Will this kill us or destroy our civilization? Near solar maximum (which happens every 11 years approximately), there are many more sunspots, solar flares and coronal mass ejections than near solar minimum. Flares and mass ejections are no danger for humans or other life

on Earth. They could endanger astronauts in deep space or on the Moon, and this is something that NASA must learn to deal with, but it is not a problem for you or me. Large outbursts can interrupt radio transmission, cause bright displays of the aurora (Northern and Southern Lights), and damage the electronics of some satellites in space. Today many satellites are designed to protect against this possibility, for example by switching off some of their more delicate circuits and going into a safe mode for a few hours. In extreme cases solar activity can also disrupt electrical transmissions on the ground, possibly leading to electrical blackouts, but this is rare. The last solar maximum occurred in 2001, but the subsequent solar minimum was unusual, with a period of a couple of years with almost no sunspots or other solar activity. Scientists now guess that the next maximum will in 2013 not 2012. However, the details of the solar cycle remain basically unpredictable. You are correct that the Earths magnetic field protects us by creating a large region in space, called the Earths magnetosphere, within which most of the material ejected from the Sun is captured or deflected, but there is no reason to expect a reversal of magnetic polarity any time soon. These magnetic reversals happen only once in 400,000 years on average. 14. I am confused about a report on the Fox News website that in 2012 a Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months. They referred to a report from the National Academy of Sciences. If nothing is going to happen as a result of the event in 2012, why would allow such nonsense to be reported? NASA requested this study of heliophysics by the National Research Council. It had nothing to do with 2012. As you note, this report includes a worst-case analysis of what could happen if there were a repetition of the biggest solar storm ever recorded (in 1859). The problem is the way such information can be used out of context. There is no reason to expect such a large solar storm in the near future, certainly not in 2012 specifically. Your reference to the event in 2012 illustrates this problem. There is no prediction of an event in 2012. We dont even expect the next solar maximum will take place in that year. The whole 2012 disaster scenario is a hoax, partly fueled by the Hollywood sciencefiction disaster film 2012, in which the Earth is nearly destroyed as the result of some sort of undefined solar outburst. I hope that most people are able to distinguish Hollywood film plots from reality. And as a matter of interest, the film 2012 was conceived and written without any reference to the 2012 date. The name was added later to take advantage of growing public concern about this year. 15. All my school friends are telling me that we are all going to die in the year 2012 due to a meteor hitting earth. Is this true? Your friends are wrong. The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012. 16. There are many reports of shifts in the Earths axis (pole shifts). In 2010 several U.S. airports had to be realigned because the directions had shifted. The sun appeared two days early in Greenland this year, and many people say the positions of sunrise and sunset are different from any time it the paste. Fox news recently reported that a pole shift was to blame for the geese flying east. Are these warnings of coming disaster in 2012? When people make claims about pole shifts, you need to ask if they are talking about the rotational pole or the magnetic pole. The directions North and South (and also East and West) are defined by the rotation of the Earth. The North Pole on Earth is the projection of the axis around which the Earth rotates, and east is defined as the direction toward which the earth rotates. All this was known before Earths magnetic field was discovered or magnetic compasses were invented. The magnetic poles are not in the same place as the rotational poles, and they move around on the surface. A compass therefore does not point to true north. This drifting of the magnetic poles required the renaming (not the reorientation) of several runways at small airports that still use magnetic headings. If the magnetic poles moved a large amount, or even if the magnetic field reversed, we would have to recalibrate the directions on our magnetic compasses, but everything else would stay the same. GPS systems would not be affected. The Sun would still rise in the same place in the East. The other stories deal with the rotation axis, which is very stable. The supposed early sunrise in Greenland and many other claims that the Sun is rising or setting in different locations are rampant on the Internet. Think about it. If there were any shift in the Earths rotational axis, it would be instantly detected. All the computer drives on telescopes around the world, and all of our GPS systems, depend on a stable rotation of the Earth. If it slipped even a tiny amount, telescopes wouldnt be able to

point, planes would be crashing because of incorrect GPS readings, and it would be the biggest news story of the century. These claims on obscure Internet sites are obviously wrong. 17. Comet Elenin was widely believed to be a threat when it passed by in SeptemberOctober 2011. Some people on the Internet said it was on the same orbit as Nibiru, or that Nibiru was moving with it or hidden behind it. What happened to Comet Elenin? Comet Elenin attracted a great deal of attention from pseudo-scientists and conspiracy theorists. Discovered in December 2010, it was a small long-period comet, less than 4 km in diameter, that fell apart when it got close to the Sun. Yet during the months leading up to perihelion, the attention of many of the true believers in doomsday 2012 shifted their attention to this little comet, claiming that it endangered the Earth. The first crazy rumor was that it was not really discovered by Russian astronomer Leonid Elenin. but that the name Elenin stood for ELE=Extinction Level Event and NIN=Nibiru Is Near. Then websites announced that it triggered the giant Japanese earthquake and tsunami in March, and therefore it must be extremely massive perhaps not a comet at all but something like a brown dwarf. Of course, scientists knew Elenin was a comet and not a massive object like a brown dwarf. First, Elenin fits the definition of a comet: It was a solar system object with an elongated (eccentric) orbit that was outgassing a tenuous atmosphere (coma) and tail as it approached the Sun. Comets are defined operationally by the presence of the visible coma and tail. Second, Elenin could not possibly be a massive object like a brown dwarf. If it were, it would not have a coma or tail, since the gas cannot escape from an object with substantial gravity. In addition, if it were massive we would by then have experienced its gravitational influence on the orbits of the planets, especially Mars and Earth (See Question 12). Finally, if it were a brown dwarf it would have been easily detected in various previous astronomical surveys, even when it was still in the far outer solar system. During the summer of 2011, Elenin remained faint, and conspiracy websites accused NASA of a cover-up (not knowing, apparently, that it is the amateur astronomy community, not NASA, who photograph faint comets and measure their positions). Meanwhile, it was widely predicted on the Internet that Elenin would do terrible damage to the Earth when it came close in late September. (The fact is that it never came closer than a hundred times the distance to the Moon.) The usual claims were made about triggering pole shifts and huge earthquakes, this time predicted for September 26. In addition, it was claimed on many Internet sites that the comet was so large that it would block out the Sun for the three days of September 26, 27, and 28, 2011. They also said that the U.S. Military would be on full alert and that all the U.S. government leaders would be taking shelter in the (fictional) bunkers under the Denver airport. In fact, Elenin was so small that it had begun to break apart by mid-September, as it neared the Sun, and of course nothing happened on September 26-27-28. Some conspiracy sites continued to claim that the comet was

accompanied by a giant invisible object and that these disasters could happen any day. Others said the comet never existed but was a false rumor spread by the government to distract attention from Nibiru. This may be a preview of what we can expect in December 2012, when many conspiracy nuts will likely continue to claim that Nibiru will destroy the Earth right up to (or beyond) December 21. 18. If Nibiru is not real, then why are all these terrible things happening in 2012? There must be some explanation for the earthquakes, floods, storms, solar outbursts, and rising temperatures our planet is experiencing. Over the four years that I have been answering questions on this topic, each of the predicted 2012 disasters has been shown to be wrong. Nibiru (or any other rogue planet) obviously does not exist, since if it were real we could see it and feel the effects of its gravity. You could not hide it from the more than 10,000 professional and 100,000 amateur astronomers. And there will be no planet alignment in 2012 that is a plain lie. The Earths magnetic flied is not headed for a reversal, while large shifts in the rotational pole are impossible. Solar activity is below normal, and the next solar maximum will not happen until 2013. Although we had one exceptionally large earthquake in Japan this year, overall there has been no increase in earthquakes worldwide. It is interesting how many people who write to me dont seem to realize that astronomers and space scientists and geologists are constantly monitoring and recording what happens to the Earth, and any deviation would be immediately detected. The one real change is global warming, as is well documented by science. That helps explain the increase in storms and floods. And we know the cause, which is the rising concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. All we are left with for 2012 is a vague concern about the roll-over in the Mayan calendar, and scholars cant even agree on what year that happens. Doomsday is not real, but peoples fear promoted by countless websites and YouTube videos is unfortunately very real, and especially harmful for children. (Continued on Page 14) THE ORIGIN OF CUSTOMS TIPPING: Some think it began when some restaurants had boxes labelled T.I.P. - To Insure Promptness - on the wall beside their entrances. Patrons who wanted their food in a hurry deposited a few coins in the box before they sat down. AN APPLE FOR THE TEACHER: Now an outmoded custom, it stems from the days when public school teachers were paid with whatever the community they served could addord. Often they were given food or goods in lieu of cash. ADVICE TO SINGLES: married, stand on your head and chew a pieve of gristle our of a beef neck and swallow it and you will get anyone you want.

8 Weird Predictions for End of the World

8 of the Weirdest Predictions for the End of the World
io9.com - Lauren Davis
We know that the world didnt end on the 21st of December but it's always nice to remember that there's a firm precedent for the world not ending on schedule. It didn't end in 1844, when William Miller and Samuel S. Snow convinced the Millerites to give away all their possessions (resulting in the Great Disappointment). It didn't end with Y2K, and the Large Hadron Collider didn't suck us all into a black hole. History is lousy with doomsday predictions, from the ancient Assyrians through this year's self-professed prophets of the endtimes. But while some preachers wait for the Rapture (the Western doomsday du jour) and other folks fear we've doomed ourselves with particle physics or nuclear technology, some apocalyptic predictions are a little stranger than others. Here are eight predictions that go beyond the Second Coming, with unlikely prophets, bizarre pseudoscience, and a few predictions that are way out thereeven for doomsayers. The Prophet Hen of Leeds (1806): Human prophets proclaiming the end of the world show up everywhere, but when a hen starts predicting the apocalypse, people take notice. The hen in question began laying eggs inscribed with the words "Christ is coming." According to Charles MacKay's book Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions Vol. I, Volume 1, this sparked a religious fervor in Leeds until its denizens learned the unpleasant truth: some hoaxster had been taking the eggs, inscribing them with corrosive ink, and reinserted them into the hen's body. I imagine that, if the hen truly could communicate through her eggs, she'd have some rather crude words for the fellow forcing eggs up her cloaca. Isaac Newton's Doomsday (1733): This is a doomsday prediction that has raised some eyebrows not because of the prediction itself, which was pretty standard (if heretical) Biblical interpretation fare, but because of its author. While Isaac Newton is remembered primarily for his contributions to science and mathematics, he was also a noted theologian and a great believer in the occult, though his private papers on matters like Biblical scholarship and alchemy weren't generally available to scholars until 1991. Newton believed in the Bible as divine revelation, but he also believed that it contained prophesies in highly symbolic language that required a skilled interpreter (like Newton himself) to decode. When Newton's apocalyptic predictions came to popular attention in 2003, many news outlets seized onto Newton's prediction that the world would end in 2060. While Newton did idly speculate on a date the world might end, he didn't really believe in setting dates; after all, human interpretation could be fallible. By his Anglican contemporaries' standards, however, Newton's religious views would have been

unorthodox and even heretical. He was antiTrinitarian and believed that worshipping Christ as divine was sinful. Stephen D. Snobelen, who has studied Newton's theological writings in great detail, has issued an interesting statement that sheds more light on Newton's beliefs and his apocalyptic prophesy. Warning from the Planet Clarion (1954): Take one Chicago housewife, add a dash of Scientology and a fascination with UFOs, shake well, and you get one of the early UFO cults. Fifty-four-year-old Dorothy Martin claimed that she was receiving communications from aliens from the planet Clarion, warning her that a Supreme Being would cleanse the Earth on December 21st, 1954. Armed with this prediction and a few strands of Dianetics, Martin gathered her own group of followers, called the Seekers. Martin told the Seekers that a flying saucer would come for the true believers to save them from destruction. The Seekers had to show their faith by leaving their jobs and giving away their money and possessions in anticipation of their rapture. On the eve of December 21st, the Seekers gathered in the appointed place and removed all metallic objects from their bodies to keep from being incinerated by the UFO. Fortunately, this story has a happier ending than a certain more recent UFO doomsday cult. When, after several hours, the flying saucer failed to arrive, Martin "received" another message from Clarion, claiming that the Supreme Being was so impressed by the Seekers' show of faith that it decided to postpone the apocalypse. What Martin and the other Seekers didn't realize at the time was that they had been infiltrated by social psychologist Leon Festinger. Festinger and his colleagues were interested in studying how the Seekers would resolve the dissonance that would result from the prophecy's failure. The results of the study were published in the 1956 book When Prophecy Fails. Halley's Comet Spurs Sales of Gas Masks (1910): Speaking of UFO cults, we need to look only as far back as Hale-Bopp to see how a comet can spark predictions of the end of the world. But in 1910, the apocalyptic predictions came with a bit of extra authority. After Chicago's Yerkes Observatory announced that deadly cyanogen gas had been detected in the

comet's tail, which the Earth would pass right through, the New York Times quoted French astronomer Camille Flammarion as saying the gas "would impregnate [the Earth's] atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet." More level-headed scientists attempted to assure the public that Flammarion was wrong and that the concentration of material in the tail wasn't enough to poison anyone, but that didn't stop the crazy for anti-comet products. Anticomet pills were sold for a dollar a pop; anticomet umbrellas promised to shield bearers; gas mask sales boomed. In cities, Americans greeted the not-quite-end of the world with rooftop comet parties. The uproar was apparently an inspiration for Sir Conan Arthur Doyle's 1913 novel, The Poison Belt. The Library of Congress details coverage about the comet's 1910 pass. The Jupiter Effect Shakes the Publishing World, but Not the Real One (1974): Another doomsday prediction with a weirdly scientific pedigree is The Jupiter Effect, a bestselling book written by Cambridgeeducated astrophysicists John Gribbin and Stephen Plagemann. The Jupiter Effect predicted that the alignment of the planets on March 10, 1982, would result in geological instabilities, triggering devastating earthquakes. Unlike most would-be prophets, however, Gribbin actually repudiated his predictions before the events in question. In 1980, he told The New Scientist that his predictions were "too clever by half." That doesn't mean he and Plagemann had completely rejected their notions; in 1982, they published The Jupiter Effect Reconsidered, which argued that the titular effect had actually predated the planetary alignment and was responsible for the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens. It was also a bestseller, although by 1999, Gribbin confessed in his The Little Book of Science that he wished he'd never had anything to do with putting forth the Jupiter Effect claims (Continued on Page 14) The X Zone New Years Eve Special with Rob McConnell 9 pm Dec 31 2012 to 1 am Jan 1 2013 Listen and Watch

8 Weird Predictions for End of the World

8 of the Weirdest Predictions for the End of the World
Continued from Page 13
Space God Appears on TV (1998): God and spaceships both pretty common components of a good apocalyptic prediction, and as we saw in the case of the Seekers, sometimes they blend. Hon-Ming Chen added a few extra layers of weird to his doomsday theology. The leader of the Taiwanese group Chen Tao (the "True Way"), also known as the God's Salvation Church, Chen predicted that God, who will look just like Chen, would appear on every television set in the world on March 25, 1998 on channel 18, ready to take Chen's followers to the afterlife. (A sizable portion of the remaining population would die, of course.) This by itself isn't quite enough to set Chen apart from other doomsday cultists (the New York Times published a convenient list of millennial doomsday sects in 1999), but for an extra bit of oddity, Chen predicted that God's spaceship would land in Garland, Texas, for no reason other than it kind of sounds like "God's Land." He moved hundreds of his Taiwanese followers to Texas, ordering them to wear white smocks and cowboy hats. When the appointed day arrived and God failed to appear, two-thirds of Chen's followers abandoned him. He moved the remaining faithful to a town outside Buffalo, where they continued to wear cowboy hats and anticipate the apocalypse. A Punch in the Face from Planet X (1995): There are plenty of folks who claim inside knowledge on the apocalypse thanks to aliens, but Nancy Lieder's Nibiru cataclysm has managed to gain quite a bit of traction. By 1997, Lieder's claim that aliens known as Zeta Reticulans had warned her of a planetary object known as Planet X (later connected to the mythological planet Nibiru cooked up by ancient astronaut proponent Zecharia Sitchin) that would knock Earth off its axis, triggering a cataclysmic pole shift, was so well known that she was mentioned in the New York Times. Astronomers have repeatedly debunked Lieder's claims, but conspiracy theories persist, with Lieder's supporters claiming that NASA is covering up evidence of Nibiru's existence. CalTech professor of astronomy Mike Brown said in 2009 that Nibiru is the most common pseudoscientific topic he is asked about (although there was also a spike in "Planet X" questions thanks to marketing for the film 2012). Hopefully, this pseudoscientific claim will start to die off with the new year; our Melancholia end was predicted to come in 2012. Safety in Bugarach (present): Many doomsday predictors of various sects believe that the "upside-down mountain," Pic de Bugarach, houses aliens who will rescue them from the December 21st apocalypse. What's especially odd about this prediction is that it's not clear exactly where it came from; New Agers have been flocking to the commune of Bugarach since the 1960s to bask in the mountain's alleged mystical qualities. Now the

small town has become a destination for 2012 apocalypse believers of all stripes. The denizens of Bugarach aren't exactly thrilled about this dubious attention; the mayor announced that the village is closed to visitors until doomsday is safely behind us. That hasn't stopped some locals from making a killing renting out their apocalypse-proof homes. []

Nibiru and Doomsday 2012: Questions and Answers

Continued from Page 12
19. Can you prove to me that Nibiru is a hoax? There are so many reports that something terrible will happen in 2012. I need proof because the government and are keeping so much from us. Yes I can prove it. Remember what Nibiru is said to be: a planet as large as the Earth on an eccentric 3600-year orbit around the Sun that threatens to collide or come close to the Earth in December 2012. If it existed, it would by now (early 2012) be visible to everyone in the night sky. Obviously it is not there. You cant hide a planet that is due here in less than a year. Further, a real planet would have sufficient mass to perturb the orbits of Mars and the Earth. Some people talk about an external object changing the tilt of the Earths axis or triggering earthquakes, which is silly, but its gravity would be distorting planetary orbits if it were real. One way we would know this is from the daily communication links between the Earth and several spacecraft orbiting Mars and operating on its surface. The radio signals measure the precise distance and relative speed between the two planets, and any deviation would be immediately recognized. Finally, we also know that no planet has been regularly passing

thorough the inner solar system. It there had been such interlopers, the Moon would have been stripped from the Earth and the orbits of the inner planets would have high eccentricity and inclination. Not only does Nibiru not exist now, we can be sure that no rogue planets have been entering the inner solar system over the past million years. You dont need to take my word for it. Just use common sense. Have you seen Nibiru? In 2008 many websites said it would be visible to the naked eye in spring 2009. If a large planet or brown dwarf were headed for the inner solar system in 2012, it would already be tracked by hundreds of thousands of astronomers, professional and amateur, all over the world. Do you know any amateur astronomers who are watching it? Have you seen any photos or discussion of it in the big popular astronomy magazines like Sky & Telescope? Just think about it. No one could hide Nibiru if it existed. 20. If Nibiru is a hoax, why doesnt issue a denial? How can you permit these lies to circulate and frighten people? Why doesnt the U.S. government do something about it! If you go to the NASA home page, nasa.gov, you will see many stories that expose the Nibiru-2012 hoax. Try searching nasa.gov under Nibiru or 2012. There is not much more that NASA can do. These hoaxes have nothing to do with NASA and are not based on NASA data, so we as an agency are not directly involved. But scientists, both within NASA and outside, recognize that this hoax with its effort to frighten people is a distraction from more important science concerns, such as global warming and loss of biological diversity. We worry about the effect of this fear on impressionable children. But we live in a country where there is freedom of speech, and that includes freedom to lie. You should be glad there are no censors. But if you will just use common sense I am sure you can recognize the lies. You can find a good summary of the scientific position on 2012 doomsday at http://2012hoax.org. []

Another Unfunny Australian P.M. Prank

Another unfunny Australian prank - and this time the Prime Minister's involved! Julia Gillard warns of the 'end of the world'
www.dailymail.co.uk - 2012.12.06
The end of the world is nigh, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard announces in a TV appearance, warning of flesh-eating zombies and demonic beasts from hell. But don't panic true to Australia's penchant for over-the-air pranksters in the wake of the Kate Middleton radio hoax Miss Gillard's dire warnings are just a spoof. She has agreed to make the short video to promote a radio station's breakfast show as part of their 'end of the world' celebrations following predictions that we will all die on December 21, according to interpretations of the Mayan calendar. Her jokey, but emotionless, warning that Armageddon will be upon us in a couple of week's time is reminiscent of Orson Welles' radio production of H.G.Wells' novel 'War of the Worlds' ,which caused widespread panic across America when it went to air in 1938. With a straight face, British-born Miss Gillard stares into the camera and addresses viewers as 'My dear remaining fellow Australians. 'The end of the world is coming. It wasn't Y2K, it wasn't even the carbon price (a reference to her Labour government's introduction of a carbon tax).' Then came the terrifying details. 'Whether the final blow comes from flesh-eating zombies, demonic hell beasts or from the total triumph of K-pop, if you know one thing about me it is this: I will always fight for you to the very end.' Finishing the 46-second video, made for radio station Triple J's breakfast show which was not the broadcaster involved in the Kate hoax she adds in a reference to a popular question-and-answer political programme she has appeared in: 'At least this means I won't have to do Q&A again.' Her tongue-in-cheek support of the Mayan belief that doom is upon us later this month has been met with mixed reactions from Australians. Some thought she had been wasting taxpayers' money, while others saw the funny side. 'Go Jules!' said one man in an online comment. 'You went up a giant notch for thisAnd personally, I hope it's zombies.' Another writer commented: 'Just think of all the men that will be spared the X-mas eve shopping rush.' A spokesman for the Prime Minister's office seemed aghast when a newspaper asked for an official comment about Miss Gillard's video clip. 'What Australian doesn't mind a laugh from time to time?' he asked

'Anyway, the world's going to end tomorrow, so shouldn't you be writing about that?' The 'tomorrow' reference is based on science writer Dr Karl Kruszeinicki's theory that the world will end two weeks earlier than the Mayan prediction. The author of '50 Shades of Grey Matter' came up with the earlier date after developing a complex algorithm using the Mayan calendar the Gregorian calendar, mathematics and, well, comedy. []

SUPERSTITIONS
LADDERS: The belief that walking under a ladder propped up against a building will bring you bad lick comes from the early Christians. They held that the leaning ladder formed a triangle, and that the symbol of the Holy Trinity should not be violated by walking through it. Those who did were considered in league with the devil. FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH: Friday, in general, is considered an unlucky day. An old poem goes: Now Friday came. Your old wives say / Of all the weeks unluckiest day. Adam and Eve were supposed to have been kicked out of the Garden of Eden on a Friday; Noahs great flood started on a Friday; and Christ was crucified on a Friday. Couple this with the fact that 12 witches plus the devil totalling 13 - are necessary for a Satanic meeting, and the resulting combination (of Friday plus 13) is a deadly one. SNEEZES: The European/American tradition of saying, God bless you when someone sneezes originated during the sixth century. It was already customary to congratulate someone when they sneezed (the prevalent idea being that a sneeze expelled evil from the body), but when a plague whose symptoms also included violent sneezes began spreading around southern Europe, the Pope stepped in. He declared that since a sneeze could be a sign of imminent death, people should bless the sneezer. The phrase caught on and became common place.

BREAKING A MORROR: At one time in the ancient world, mirrors were used to tell fortunes. If a mirror was broken during the reading, it meant that the person was doomed. Later, this was amended; a persons image was interpreted as a symbol of health, and a cracked image in the mirror meant imminent illness. But ultimately, the superstition of seven years bad luck is common today because it was used to scare European servants in the 1400s and 1500s into using extra care when polishing their masters expensive mirrors. No servant (or anyone, for that matter) wanted to court a lifetime of bad luck. The belief spread, and became ingrained in European culture. SALT: The origin of this nearly worldwide superstition is hard ot trace, but it logically stems from salts historic importance as a spice and medicine. If you were the kind of person who could spill something as precious as salt, you were clearly headed for trouble. Some historians attribute the rituals surrounding salt to Judas spilling salt at the table during the Last Supper, but thats spurious. The antidote throeing a few grains over your left shoulder - is a little puzzling. The best explanation: in some cultures, people believed that nasty spirits inhabited the left side, and tossing some salt over the shoulder hit them right in the eyes thus preventing their evil deeds. BLACK CATS: In ancient Egypt, cast were regarded as spiritual creatures, and among the more exalted Goddesses was Bast, a black female cat. But in European culture, the black cat became an animal to avoid. Apparently, in the Middle Ages, when ignorant peasants were convinced that witches and evil demons were living among them, cats were singled out as suspicious creatures (perhaps because of their silent, fluid movements, or the way they stare, or even their occasionally unworldly wailing). The fact that some of the women who cared for cats were old and grizzled - with material probably added to the legend. Ultimately, people came to believe that a black cat was the nightmare embodiment of a witch. [] Spend New Years Eve 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. with Rob McConnell and The X Zone Radio Show www.xzoneradiotv.com

You Can Beat Lung Cancer

Can you overcome lung cancer without harsh chemicals, surgery and debilitation? Are alternative interventions effective? Why do conventional physicians not use them? Can you prevent cancer recurrences and live into old age without chronic diseases and prescribed medications? This book answers these and other questions. This is one of the most comprehensive books available on alternative treatments for lung cancer. It explains the treatments used successfully by a health professional/cancer survivor of 36 years and by some of the leading medical and health practitioners currently in the field. G. Edward Griffin, Author of World Without Cancer, The Politics of Cancer Therapy, and other books and films. Recipient of the Telly Award for Excellence in Television Production. President of American Media. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr Carl O Helvie (1932- ) grew up in Gouverneur, New York and functioned as a nurse practitioner, educator, author, and researcher for 60 years. Most of his degrees and practice have been in public health and wellness. During his years in academia he wrote 10 books and book chapters, over 55 articles, gave 57 research papers around the United States and Europe, developed a nursing theory, and received funding for and established a nursing center and provided primary care for homeless and low income individuals and families. He also overcome lung cancer using natural interventions after being given 6 months to live by conventional medicine in 1974. Since retirement he has written two additional books and has been host of the holistic health radio show for the past 4 years. All of his current work since retirement from academia focuses on natural interventions for health problems. Applying these concepts in his own life he is now age 80 and free of chronic illnesses and prescribed medications dispite the average for a 75 year old of 3 chronic illnesses and 5 prescribed medications. In 1999 he received the Distinquised Career Award in Public Health from the American Publc Health Association, and most recently was listed in Wikipedia.

Billions Survive Doomsday Prediction

Oh Mayan billions survive ancient doomsday prediction
www.thesun.co.uk
Experts found that the Mayans thought it would all be over at 11.11GMT. But we're still here... for now. So dozens of losers who flocked to Bugarach in France because they thought it was the only safe place can come back and rejoin the rest of us. Other hiding spots included the opportunity to rent Josef Stalin's former underground bunker - for a price of $1,500 . Anyone renting the bunker - 210 ft underground - will get a 50 per cent refund if nothing happens. Meanwhile in Serbia, the place to be was Mount Rtanj, a pyramid-shaped peak pulled in cult weirdos. A local legend has it that the mountain once swallowed an evil sorcerer who will be released on doomsday in a ball of fire. The inside of the mountain will then become a safe place to hide as the sorcerer goes on to destroy the rest of the world. In the meantime, some old coal mineshafts have been opened up as safe rooms for the dozens who have arrived already. Sirince, a small Turkish village known for its wines, has also been touted as a safe haven, thought to be because it is close to an area where the Virgin Mary is believed to have lived her final days. In China, the prediction is already causing problems, with the authorities detaining more than 500 people this week. A fringe Christian group got into trouble after spreading rumours about the worlds impending end, with leaflets, CDs, books and other material all seized. Those detained are reported to be members of the group Almighty God, also called Eastern Lightning, with authorities in the province of Qinghai saying they are waging a severe crackdown on the group, accusing it of attacking the Communist Party and the government. And a mocked up image of Sydney being invaded by flaming meteors and a giant monster went viral on the internet. Five "hippies" including one brandishing a Taser gun were turned back by French police as they tried to enter Bugarach. The village in the foothills of the Pyrenees, is said to contain a mystical UFO garage which will ferry people off planet earth as the Mayan Calendar runs out. Doomsday followers are convinced here will be no December 22nd for anyone except for those who make it to the hamlet, which has a population of 189 people. It had swelled to around three times that amount today, with some 200 journalists joining mainly "New Age types". But the 100 odd police who have set up road blocks said no-one else would be allowed up until after Christmas. "Weve stopped five hippies so far,

including one who was carrying a Taser," said a local police spokesman, adding: "All agreed to turn back from trying to get to the village, which is overcrowded enough as it is. "There are a few more New Age types around - the kind you get at illegal raves - but theyre not causing any problems." Jean-Pierre Delord, the mayor of Bulgarach, also made an appeal to cult fanatics to stay away, saying: "We just dont want people up here, for the simple reason that we cannot cope with large numbers." Mr Delord said that "another hippie" had already died climbing up to the village earlier this year, adding: "the end of the world came a bit earlier for him than he expected." Helicopters could be seen circling the Pic de Bulgarach, a 4000ft peak in the Aude department close to Carcassonne, as they searched for anybody who might be trying to get into the village across country lanes. In a security operation costing hundreds of thousands of pounds, police potholers were also checking underground tunnels and caves. The perimeter of a no-go area covers

three villages in total, as well as a tented security HQ including a field clinic and team of psychological counsellors. Regional prefect Eric Freysselinard said: "I have issued an order barring anyone from climbing the mountain. Those trying to get into the village will be stopped and asked what their business is." Doomsday Parties Across South California

Failed doomsday prediction leads to parties across Southern California
Daily News, Los Angeles
If you're reading this, then the world didn't end Friday, December 21, 2012. But that didn't keep people from getting anxious - some even joyously excited - about the thought of it being their last night. "I freaked out about the end of the world for a long time," said Los Angeles resident Jason Spence. "When midnight came, I was like OK, cool. "There aren't explosions in the street. No meteors coming down. God's not up in the clouds telling us all to behave. So I feel pretty good." Spence felt so good about the day that he drove all over sunny Los Angeles County to take photos, ending with shots of the sunset from the slope of Mount Hollywood just outside of the Griffith Observatory, which hosted a "NOT the End of the World" event Friday. Festivities included winter solstice lectures and late night shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium. The observatory even stayed open until 12:01 a.m. to prove that life will still go on. In other areas of Los Angeles, everything from house parties to raves and even a "giant marshmallow roast" in downtown were planned to ring in the end of the 13th baktun cycle of the ancient Mayan Long Count Calendar. "Scientists can predict things like whether or not there's an actual threat of an asteroid crashing into our planet," said Laura Danly, the Griffith Observatory curator and astronomer. "We observe over half a million asteroids and know their orbits in great precision. They're not going to hurt us any time soon. Science can make predictions about what poses us danger and what does not, and there is no danger for tonight or anytime soon by an asteroid, solar storms or planetary collisions." The celebration of the failed prediction, however, did not put an end to the doomsayers who are now touting future apocalyptic events one as near as Sunday, according to an archaeologist with Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History. "It's interesting why people are so fascinated by the end-of-the-world dates," Danly said. "It must be part of human nature to look for some sort of big transition like that, but there is no scientific backing for things like that." Ramona Martinez of Riverside said she and her friends stayed up late Thursday texting each other about the end of the world. When midnight hit and no Earth-shattering event happened, Martinez said they just shrugged off all the hype. "We were just very `whatever' about it," Martinez said. Still, while many were scoffing at what they deemed a non-event, Karim Satta of Los

Feliz believed there was plenty to celebrate. Satta is referring to the end of the 26,000-year cycle that marks when the Earth's axis completes a full cycle of precession, which he believes will bring refreshing energy to the universe. "People keep saying nothing happened, but something even more exciting happened today," Satta said. "We're still here and we're entering an age of enlightenment. It's the new Golden Age." []

Setting History Straight

Setting History Straight Davy Crockett
THE MYTH: Davy Crockett was an American hero, a clean-cut frontier superman who: - Killed him a bar when he was only three; - Was the greatest Indian fighter of his day; - Could shoot a rifle better than any man alive; - Was a respected Congressman who considered running for president; - Was the last man to die at the Alamo. BACKGROUND: Much of this information was taken from Crocketts autobiography and a series of Crockett Almanacs which were published between 1835 and 1856. But it was Walt Disney who made the legend stick. In December, 1954 he unveiled a called Davy Crockett, Indian fighter. The folk hero became an instant national fad, surprising even Uncle Walt. In a matter of months, merchants sold millions of dollars worth of official Davy Crockett coonskin caps, bubble gum cards, toy guns, fringed jackets, etc. Fourteen-million copies of Crocketts life story were sold. The Davy Crockett theme song hit national top 20 four times in one year, with four different versions. - A drunk who deserted his wife and children; - A scout who avoided going into battle against the Indians by hiring a substitute; - A congressman with one of the worst absentee records in history. The only thing that seems to be consistant with the legend is that Crockett did die at the Alamo. But that, says author Paul Sann in Fads, Follies, and Delusions, was more bungling and stupidity than heroism. During the Crockett craze, several journalists researched the new American hero and the following are some sample comments: He was never king of anything, except maybe the Tennessee Tall Tales and Bourbon Samplers Association. When he claimed that he had shot 105 bear in nine months, his fellow tipplers refused to believe a word of it, on the grounds that Davy couldnt count that high. - John Fisher, Harpers magazine. He was out on the frontier because it was an easier place to live in than a home with a growing brood. Davy had a flock of children and he left them and never bothered with any of them again. He set the cause of married life back about 200 years. - Harry Golden, syndicated columnist Davy grew up to be a very brave young man, who would bear any hardship to escape a routine days work. - Murray Kempton, New York Post Ironically Fess Parker, who played the lead in the Disney version of Crocketts life and became a star as a result - was also a bit of a fraud. Says Leonard Mosley in Disneys World, Parker hated Wild West roles. As in the case of most minor Hollywood actors, hunger had sometimes forced him to play in Western films, and he found he was allergic to horses and loathed the clothing cowboys wore. His... lip curled in derision and distaste when he saw the drawings of Davy Crocketts out fit... But eventually hunger won out, and Parker signed up for the film. They had to teach him how to ride a horse, first, and and do it without him coming down with a case of hives. His leather breeches were specially sprayed before he wore them, and when he was out of camera range he shied away from them as if they were a bunch of poison ivy, swearing they would give him crotch rot. Parker later played TVs Daniel Boone for 6 years. [] real Uncle Sam. Then, in 1961, a historian stumbled on proof that Uncle Sam had actually existed. THE TRUTH: Theres a detailed account of the Uncle Sam story in Charles Panatis book Extraordinary Origins of Everyday Things. Here are some excerpts: BACKGROUND - Uncle Sam was Samuel Wilson. He was born in Arlington, Massachusetts, on September 13, 1766...At age 14 [he] joined the army and fought in the American Revolution. - With independence from Britain won, Sam moved in 1789 to Troy, New York, and opened a meat-packaging company. Because of his jovial manner and fair business practices, he was affectionately known ot townsfolk as Uncle Sam. OUR UNCLE SAM IS BORN - During the War of 182, government troops were quartered near Troy. Sam Wilsons fair-dealing reputation won him a military contract to provide beef and pork to the soldiers. To indicate that certain crates of meat produced at his warehouse were destined for military use, Sam stamped them with a large U.S. - for United States, though the abbreviation was not yet in the vernacular. - On October ,1 1812, government inspectors made a routine tour of the plant. They asked a meat packer what the ubiquitously stamped U.S. stood for. The worker, himself uncertain, joked that the letters must represent the initials of his employer, Uncle Sam. - The error was perpetuated. Soon soldiers began referring to all military rations as bounty from Uncle Sam. Before long, they were calling all government-issued supplied property of Uncle Sam. They even saw themselves as Uncle Sams men. UNCLE SAMS WARDROBE The familiar and colorful image of Uncle Sam we know today arose piecemeal, almost one item at a time, each the contribution of an illustrator. - The first Uncle Sam illustrations appeared in New England newspapers in 1820. - Solid red pants were introduced during...Jacksons presidency. - The...beard first appeared during Abraham Lincolns term, inspired by the Presidents own beard, which set a trend at the time. - By the late nineteenth century, Uncle Sam was such a popular national figure that cartoonist decided he should appear more patriotically attired. They adorned his red pants with stripes. His costume became and embodiment of the countrys flag. - It was Thomas Nast, the famous...cartoonist of the Civil War and Reconstruction period, who made Uncle Sam tall, thin, and hollowcheeked. Coincidentally, Nasts Uncle Sam strongly resembles drawings of the real-life Sam Wilson. But Nasts model was actually Abraham Lincoln. (Continued on Page 21)

Setting History Straight George Armstrong Custer

A BRAVE INDIAN FIGHTER?
THE MYTH: General George Armstrong Custer was one of the U.S. Armys great soldiers during the western expansion. His valiant battle at the Little Bighorn - fighting a horde of renegade Indians that outnumbered his small cavalry unit 1,000 to 1 (Custers Last made the white mans victory over the red man inevitable. At one time so many people believed it that Custer was the hero of several films, and (The Legend of Custer ran for a few months in 1967 on ABC.) Custer was also the subject of a million-selling record, Please Mr. Custer, in 1958. THE TRUTH: - Custer was a lieutenant colonel, not a general. (He had briefly been a major general during the Civil War, but was immediately demoted to captain when the war ended.) - Custer was far from an exemplary soldier. He finished last in his class at West Point in 1861. And in 1867, he left his command to visit his wife; when he was caught, he was courtmartialed and kicked out of the service for a year. He was allowed to return only because the Army needed help fighting Indians. - Custers Last Stand wasnt heroism, it was stupidity. Custers division was supposed to be a small pert of a major attack, led by General Alfred Terry - who was planning to meet Custer in two days with his troops. Custer was instructed to wait for Terry. Instead, he led his 266 men into battle, where they were all slaughtered. Historians speculate that the foolishly ambitious Custer believed a victory would earn him a presidential nomination, or that he had unwarranted contempt for the Indians fighting ability.

- The most famous portrayal of Uncle Sam - the one most frequently reproduced and widely recognized - was painted in the 20th century by American artist James Montgomery Flagg. The stern-faced, stiff-armed, singerpointing figure appeared on World War I posters Uncle Sam, though, is not an Abe Lincoln likeness, but a self-portrait. A MYTH UNCOVERED - During these years...the character of Uncle Sam was still only a myth. The identity of his prototype first came to light in early 1961. A historian, Thomas Gerson, discovered a May 12, 1830, issue of the New York Gazette newspaper in the archives of the New York Historical Society. In it, a detailed firsthand account explained how Pheodorus Bailey, a postmaster of New York City, had witnessed the Uncle Sam legend take root in Troy, New York. - Sam was officially acknowledged during JFKs administration, by an act of the 87th Congress, which states that the Congress salutes Uncle Sam Wilson of Troy, New York, as the progenitor of Americas National symbol. their hands cut off and bled to death. After two years, half of Haitis 250,000 inhabitants were dead through murder, mutilation, or suicide. Many of the native Indians who survived were enslaved and brought back to Spain. Let us in the name of the Holy Trinity, go on sending all - It makes you wonder why he even bothered to run for president in 1860 - but he did...and won. He was reelected in 1864. HONEST ABE? - Lincolns presidential campaigns used dirty tricks to get ahead: During the 1860 Republican National Convention, his campaign managers forged convention passes in order to pack the galleries with Lincoln supporters, shutting out hundreds of his opponents supporters in the process. Lincoln won the nomination. - Lincoln wasnt always that honest: After one trip to Springfield, Illinois, he filed for compensation for the 3,252 miles he claimed to have travelled. The actual length of the trip was 1,800 miles. ABE FACTS - Lincoln hated being called Abe friends called him Lincoln. - He really did carry important documents in his stovepipe hat. - He was the first President to support womens suffrage. In 1832, while running for the state legislature, he provided a newspaper with a prepared statement supporting the idea. - Though the Gettysburg Address is considered the most eloquent oration in American history, the Chicago Tribune hated it. The day after Lincoln delivered it, the Times wrote: The cheek of every American must tingle with shame as he reads the silly, flat and dish-watery utterances of the man who had been pointed out to intelligent foreigners as the President of the United States. THE REAL ABE: - Some photographs of Lincoln show him with a mole on the right side of his face but others show the mole on the left side of his face. The reason: few full-length pictures of Lincoln existed when he was running for president. So when photographers needed one, they put Lincolns head onto other peoples bodies. Sometimes the head needed to be reversed to fit the body they were using - and the mole on his right cheek ended up on his left. - Although Lincolns voice is often portrayed in the movies as being deep and booming, his actual voice was high-pitched, piercing and shrill. Though unusual, it paid off distinct advantage in open-air speeches and debates. TRY, TRY AGAIN Lincoln wasnt always a success: - He lost a race for the state legislature in 1832. He also lost his job. - His grocery business failed the following year. It took him 15 years to pay off the debt. - He was elected to the state legislature in 1834, but lost races for speaker of the house in 1836 and 1838. - He was elected to Congress in 1846 but was defeated after only two years, and in 1849 lost the race for a land-office seat. - He lost the U.S. Senate race in 1854 and again in 1858. In between, he lost the Vice Presidential nomination.

Columbus proved the Earth was round. THE TRUTH: The ancient greeks knew the world wasnt flat two thousand years before Columbus was born. Pythagoras came up with the theory in the sixth century B.C., and Ptolemy proved it in the second century A.D. Before Columbus left on his first voyage to the New World, he studied globes and maps depicting a round planet. He had a hard time finding funding for his voyage, not because his contemporaries thought he would sail off the earths edges, but because they thought the Orient was too far to reach by sailing west. THE MYTH: Christopher Columbus was the first European to discover North America. THE TRUTH: Columbus never even set foot on the North American continent. The closest he ever came was the islands of the Caribbean and South America. The America whose discovery is celebrated is actually a tiny island near San Salvador, which was already inhabited anyway. Even Columbus wouldnt take credit for discovering a new continent - he died thinking he had reached India. Actually, the Vikings were the first Europeans to reach North America, around 1,000 A.D. THE MYTH: Christopher Columbus was a friend to the Indians. THE TRUTH: Sad to say, thats not even close. Rented Silence by Lucia Mann

A woman was recently sentenced to 140 months in prison after using two Nigerian immigrants as personal unpaid servants in her luxury home in Atlanta, Georgia. A few days later, two Ukrainian brothers were convicted of smuggling desperate villagers into the United States to work long hours, cleaning retail stores and office buildings at little or no pay. The prosecuting U.S. attorney in Philadelphia, Daniel Velez, said it was modern-day slavery. Its hiding in plain sight. However, according to a woman who lived through the racial prejudice, segregation and slavery in post-World War II Europe, the slavery crisis in the modern world is far greater than that. Anyone who thinks slavery died when America abolished it in the 1800s has a shock coming to them, said Lucia Mann, whose mother was a sex slave and a WWII concentration camp survivor. Mann, a former journalist and author of Rented Silence (www.rentedsilence.com), a novel about slavery and racial prejudice based on her life experiences and those of other persecuted souls she witnessed says, According to the United Nations, there are more than 27 million slaves worldwide, which are more than twice the number of those who were enslaved over the 400 years that transatlantic slavers trafficked humans to work in the Americas. Many are forced into prostitution while others are used as unpaid laborers used to manufacture goods many of us buy in the U.S. In fact, its almost impossible to buy clothes or goods anymore without inadvertently supporting the slave trade. "Rented Silence is a story of human suffering during a brutal period in the British Colonial history. But at the same time it is an inspiration tale of hope and love, but mostly the testimony of the human spirit to survive against the odds. Rented Silence will move you to tears, anger and a wide range of other emotions and will make you ask: Where was God in the midst of this evil? Rented Silence will stay with you long after you've closed the book."

About Lucia Mann : Lucia Man is part Sicilian and part British South African, born in British Colonial South Africa in the wake of WWII. She is a citizen of Britain and Canada who recently applied for a U.S. Green Card because she believes she is an American at heart. She was educated in London, England and retired from freelance journalism in 1998. After suffering from racial prejudice most of her early life because she was part Italian and part South African, she saw and felt firsthand the pain and suffering of those who were thought to be inferior because of the color of their skin. Her mission is to end prejudice and slavery now and in the future.

STRANGE BUT TRUE Lincoln took his dreams seriously, and believed that strange events foretold the future. According to some accounts, he may even have predicted his own assassination. - On one occasion, he looked into an old mirror and saw two reflections of himself. His interpretation: eh would serve a second term as President - but would die in office. - About one week before his assassination, Lincoln had a dream in which he awoke to the sound of sobbing and went to the East Room of the White House - which had been prepared for a funeral. When he asked the President. - The morning of the assassination, Lincoln told his aides that he had had another dream, one in which he was sailing in an indescribable vessel and moving rapidly toward an indistinct shore. THE MYTH The Pony Express was one of the most important links connecting the gold rush towns of the West and large cities in the East. For years it was the fastest way to send a letter to California; without it the western states might never have developed. THE TRUTH In its short lifetime (18 months - 18601861), the Pony Express was the fastest way to send a letter to California. Riders could deliver a letter in 10 days - half the time to send it by sea. But it had its problems: - Hardly anyone could afford to use it. A single letter initially cost $5.00 to mail, and never dropped below a dollar. The largest customers were newspapers that depended on late-breaking news to leep readers up to date. - The shipping firm of Russell, Majors & Waddell - founders of the Pony Express - knew their enterprise could never make money with normal business; they counted on winning a contract with the federal government to help cover its enormous costs ($70,000 up front and $4,000 per month). They never got one. The government was more interested in Samuel Morses telegraph. - By 1861 the nations first transcontinental telegraph line was completed making the Pony Express obsolete overnight. It folded less than two years after its introduction, over $500,000 in debt. EXPRESS FACTS - There wasnt a single pony in the Pony Express. Ponies didnt have the stamina to carry large loads of mail over long distances. - Few of the riders were adults. Most were teenagers, hired through newspaper skinny wiry fellows, not over 18. Must be expert riders willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred. THE MYTH Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. BACKGROUND About 15 years before Bell uttered the you, German scientist Phillip Reis had developed a crude working telephone. And about five years before Bells historic race to the patent office, and Italian scientist named Antonio Meucci offered the patent office a rough description of a telephones structure and principles. But nothing ever came of it. THE TRUTH Alexander Graham Bell wasnt the first to develop the device - but he was the first to patent it...barely. Many scientists were working on a telephone at the same time; one of them Elisha Gray - arrived at the U.S. Patent Office with a model telephone just two hours after Bell. In fact, some say Grays telephone was better than Bells and more like the one we use today. By the time Bell received his patent, so many people claimed the telephone as their own invention that Bell had to defend the patent in court. In fact, the case went all the way to the Supreme Court. The verdict: the high court was divided in his favor, allowing him the rights to the phone.

Setting History Straight Henry Ford

THE MYTH Henry Ford invented the first automobile. THE TRUTH Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler, two German engineers who went on to form Mercedes-Benz, each developed working gasoline engine automobiles in 1885. The first American car was built by Charles and J. Frank Duryea in 1893. By then, Benz already had a model, the Velo, ready for sale to the general public. THE MYTH O.K., if Ford didnt invent the car, at least he invented the auto assembly line. THE TRUTH No, chalk this one up to Ransom E. Olds, creator of the Oldsmobile. Olds introduced the moving assembly lien in the early 1900s and boosted car production by 500%. The previous year. the Olds Motor Vehicle Company had turned out 425 cars. The year after they made over 2,500 of them. Ford improved Oldss system by introducing the conveyor belt, which moved both the cars and needed parts along the production line. The belt cut Fords production time from a day to about two hours. A significant contribution, but not the original. Setting History Straight The Boston Tea Party

THE MYTH The Boston Tea Party was held because the British imposed a tax on tea. THE TRUTH The exact opposite is actually true. The British did impose the Townsend Act, which taxed a number of goods - including tea - quite heavily. However, the tax on tea didnt really affect the colonists - they drank a smuggled, less expensive Dutch tea (John Hancock was a big Dutch tea smuggler). To undercut the American teasmuggling operation, the British rounded up between 15 and 20 million pounds of surplus tea, passed the Tea Act which eliminated taxes on Brtish tea, and priced their huge supply below the price of the smuggled Dutch tea. Colonists responded to this British interference by dumping the British tea before it was unloaded. That was th eevent called the Boston Tea Party.

The 7 Wonders of the Ancient World

The 7 Wonders of the Ancient World
THE ORIGIN OF THE 7 WONDERS Today we think nothing of 100-story skyscrapers. But in the earliest days of civilization, huge structures were considered superhuman accomplishments. The most impressive of these came to be known as The Seven Wonders of the World. How they got their name is a pretty interesting story itself. (After all, there were no intercontinental broadcasts to tell people abut them.) It turns out that in the time when Greece and Rome dominated the course of history in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, private fleets made money ferrying passengers to exotic lands. To tout these destinations, the worlds first tourist guidebooks were created. Among their most popular attractions were...The Seven Wonders of the World, The earliest list of them on record was compiled by Antipater of Sidonin in the Second Century B.C. THE EGYPTIAN PYRAMIDS AT GIZA Built: Between 2600 and 2500 B.C. History: Three enormous pyramids were erected as burial tombs for Egyptian pharaohs thousands of years before the golden ages of Greece and Rome. The largest, called the Great Pyramid, stands 450 feet high at its peak; its base takes up 13 acres. The Greeks and Romans were impressed by their size, but, unaware of their religious significance, considered them extravagant. Fate: Still Standing. And they still attract millions of visitors from around the globe every year, THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON Built: Sometime in the late Seventh or early Sixth Century B.C. History: King Nebuchadnezzar II, who ruled Babylon (near the modern city of Baghdad) between 605 and 562 B.C., built the hanging gardens for his queen, the daughter of the Median king Cyaxares. She was supposedly uncomfortable on the hot Mesopotamian flatlands, and longed for the cool, lofty heights of her mountainous homeland. So Nebuchadnezzar had the enormous garden structure designed and built with elevated terraces containing groves of trees, lush vegetation, fountains and exotic birds. According to contemporary accounts, the gardens were laid out on a brick terrace about 400 feet square and 75 feet above the ground; irrigation was provided by slaves turning screws to lift water from the nearby Euphrates River. The stone used in the construction is not found anywhere on the Mesopotamian plane; historians believe it was ferried down the Tigris River from a far-off mountain quarry. Fate: Destroyed. Archeologists have been unable to discover and positively identify the remains of the gardens. The X Zone Radio Show Pocasts are available at for FREE at www.xzonepodcast.com

THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS (DIANA) AT EPHESUS Built: Circa 550 B.C. History: One of the grandest and most architecturally advanced of ancient temples, the temple of Artemis (whom the Romans called Diana) was located in the Greek city of Ephesus, across the Aegean from modern Greece, on the wets coast of what is now Turkey. According to Pliny, it took 120 years to build. It was made entirely of marble, except for its tile-covered wooden roof. It rested on a foundation measuring 377 by 180 feet, and featured 106 columns - each represented by a different king - about 40 feet high. The Ephesians (the same ones St. Paul preached to) used an especially clever technique inclined plane of sandbags up to the apex of the columns, and dragged the stones up the plane to be laid atop the columns, and dragged the stones up the plane to be laid atop the columns. Then they slit the bags so the sand would empty out, leaving the marble slabs resting in place. Fate: The original temple was destroyed by an arsonist (who said he did to achieve immortality for his name) in 365 B.C. A replacement of similar design was erected on the same foundation. The replacement was burned by the and parts of the second temple remain. Sculptures from the second temple can be found in the British Museum. THE STATUE OF ZEUS, OLYMPIA, GREECE Built: Circa 435 B.C. History: Built by the Greek sculptor Phidias, the depiction of the Greek king of the gods may

have been the ancient worlds most famous statue. It stood 40 feet high and depicted Zeus a symbol of power, thrower of thunderbolts - on his throne. His robe and ornaments were made of gold, his body of ivory. He wore a wreath on his head and held a figure of his messenger Nike in his right hand, and a scepter in his left. Fate: Destroyed (No one is sure how or when). THE MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS, IN ASIA MINOR (Southwestern Turkey) Built: About 353 B.C. History: Originally built as a burial tomb for Mausolus, a local ruler in part of the Persian Empire, this huge, white marble edifice stood about 135 feet high, and measured 440 feet around its rectangular base. Above the base was a colonnade formed by 36 columns, and, above them, a stepped pyramid, which, historians believe, held a statue of Mausolus in a chariot. Fate: The top part was destroyed by an earthquake. Only pieces of the building, and its decorations (called friezes) remain; the British Museum holdings include some sculptures from the site. King Mausolus has been immportalized in the word used to name any large tomb. (Continued on Page 27)

In jokes and articles, ads and movies, from Y2K to other doomsday predictions and the incorrect use of the word apocalypse, to the preoccupation with the December 21, 2012 date, we have a thing about ends. The Maya never said their calendar would end on December 21st, 2012. A long Mayan calendar cycle of just over 5,125 years finishes, and on the next day, a new great cycle of 5,125 years begins. Their breathtakingly harmonic calendar works as wheels within wheels within wheels that keep turning. The great cycle ending on Winter Solstice 2012 is called the Fourth Sun and is governed by male energy. On December 22nd, 2012, the Fifth Sun is born, a new 5,125 year era that will be governed by a balance of male and female energies. At this time of change and transformation in our world, ancient indigenous wisdom is crucial for living harmoniously with each other and the planet.

Indiana Jones Makers Sued

'Indiana Jones' Makers Sued Over Crystal Skull
www.news.discovery.com
On Wednesday, one of the most entertaining lawsuits of the year was filed in Illinois federal court. It comes from Dr. Jaime Awe, director of the Institute of Archeology of Belize. This reallife Indiana Jones is suing on behalf of the nation of Belize over the Crystal Skull artifact, popularized in the 2008 Steven Spielberg film "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," Awe is demanding the return of the Crystal Skull from a treasure-hunting family that allegedly stole it 88 years ago from Belize. Awe is suing Lucasfilm, the Walt Disney Company, and Paramount Pictures. Awe states that the crystal skull described in the film was stolen by a British explorer (and sometime archaeologist) named F.A. Mitchell-Hedges during a visit to the Maya ruins of Lubantuun in the jungle of Belize in the early 1920s. His adopted daughter Anna MitchellHedges is said to have discovered the skull while exploring the ruins. They returned to England with the skull, and Anna regularly exhibited the skull after her father's death in 1959. In his complaint Awe cites a 1928 "Antiquities Ordinance" which prohibited the removal of artifacts from Belize without express government permission. Since the crystal skull was illegally removed from the ruins and used as a basis for the most recent Indiana Jones film, Awe and Belize want a cut of the profits and the return of the stolen skull which they see as part of their cultural heritage. "Lucasfilm never sought, nor was given permission to utilize the Mitchell-Hedges Skull or its likeness in the Film," says the complaint. "To date, Belize has not participated in any of the profits derived from the sale of the Film or the rights thereto." The True Story of the Crystal Skull It's unlikely that the lawsuit will go anywhere - mostly because (apparently unbeknownst to Awe) it's based on a famous hoax. Daniel Loxton, editor of Junior Skeptic magazine, researched the history of the skull and discovered that Anna Mitchell-Hedges changed her story about how she got the skull at least twice. The first account stated that she and her father found the skull together beneath an altar in a ruined temple in 1926. In a 1983 account she claimed she was with a worker who was felling trees in the jungle and saw something shiny beneath the stones and dug it up on the spot. Then she claimed she found it after being lowered into a hidden temple with ropes (ironically, in a scene reminiscent of an Indiana Jones film). Furthermore there's no evidence that Anna even visited the ruins at Lubantuun where she claims to have found the skull. The truth is that neither Anna nor her father found the skull, amid the Lubantuun ruins, on eBay, or anywhere else. The historical record shows that Mr. Mitchell-Hedges bought the skull from an antiquities collector named Sydney Burney in

An archaeologist in Belize is suing the makers of the film "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," claiming that the story is based upon a national treasure looted nearly a century ago from the small Central American country. 1933, which he later sold to pay a debt. It was later purchased by his daughter Anna, who made up an adventurous story about finding it on her 17th birthday in the jungle ruins of a lost city. All the fanciful, adventurous stories about discovering the crystal skull amid ruins in the Central American jungles were just myths created to craft a colorful backstory to the strange skull. "I discovered it in a long-lost ruined jungle temple" is more fun than "My father bought it from a guy at an auction." The hoax lasted for decades, and fooled hundreds of crystal skull enthusiasts. Since the Mitchell-Hedges skull was never even in Belize -- much less found there in an ancient Maya ruin by an adventurer's teenage daughter -- the Belizean government has no claim over it. It's all a myth. It's not surprising that New Age crystalgazers were fooled by the bold hoax, though to have director of the Institute of Archaeology of Belize file a lawsuit against Lucasfilms and Disney based upon it is another matter. Created in honor of the sun god Helios, it stood 120 feet high - roughly the height of the Statue of Liberty - and was made of hollow stone blocks held together by iron bars, a construction technique still used today. Fate: Destroyed by an earthquake in 224 B.C. The iron bars were sold for scrap some 800 years later, in 653 A.D. THE PHAROS LIGHTHOUSE AT ALEXANDRIA Built: Sometime during the reign of Ptolemy II (283-246 B.C.) History: Designed by the Greek architect Sostratos, the 400-feet-high lighthouse stood on the island of Pharos in Alexandrias harbor. It achieved such renown that the word pharos came to mean lighthouse. The structures design was particularly striking: the bottom section, resting on a stone platform, was square; the middle section was eight-sided; and the top section was circular. A fire at the apex provided the light. Fate: After helping mariners enter the harbor for 1,500 years, the lighthouse collapsed in an earthquake. []

Asteroid to Miss Earth in 2040, NASA Says

Asteroid to miss Earth in 2040, NASA says
CNN
(CNN) -- On a day when global doomsday predictions failed to pan out, NASA had more good news for the Earth: An asteroid feared to be on a collision course with our planet no longer poses a threat. Uncertainties about the orbit of the asteroid, known as 2011 AG5, previously allowed for a less than a 1% chance it would hit the Earth in February 2040, NASA said. To narrow down the asteroid's future course, NASA put out a call for more observation. Astronomers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa took up the task and managed to observe the asteroid over several days in October. "An analysis of the new data conducted by NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, shows that the risk of collision in 2040 has been eliminated," NASA declared Friday. The new observations, made with the Gemini 8-meter telescope in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, reduce the orbit uncertainties by more than a factor of 60. That means the Earth's position in February 2040 is not in range of the asteroid's possible future paths. The asteroid, which is 140 meters (460 feet) in diameter, will get no closer to Earth than 890,000 kilometers (553,000 miles), or more than twice the distance to the moon, NASA said. A collision with Earth would have released about 100 megatons of energy, several thousand times more powerful than the atomic bombs that ended World War II, according to the Gemini Observatory. Observing the asteroid wasn't easy, said David Tholen, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy. The asteroid's position was very close to the sun, so astronomers had to observe it when the sky was dark. Tholen told CNN there was about a half-hour between when the asteroid got high enough in the sky for the telescope to point at it and before the sky became too light to observe it. Because the astronomers were looking at the asteroid low in the sky, they were viewing it through a lot of atmosphere, which scattered some of the light and made the object fainter, he said. "The second effect is the turbulence of the atmosphere makes things fainter," Tholen said. "We had to keep trying over and over until we got one of those nights when the atmosphere was calm." Tholen and the team also discovered the asteroid is elongated, so that as it rotates, its brightness changes. That was another challenge for the astronomers: Because they didn't know the asteroid's rotation period, they didn't know when it would wax and wane, and when it would grow too faint to see. "This object was changing its brightness by a factor of three or four -- it was just enormously variable," Tholen said. "It was hit and miss depending on which night you observed it."

The position data obtained for near-Earth asteroid 2011 AG5 in October was used to reduce its future orbital uncertainties. Many predicted the end of the world would come Friday, the day on which a long phase in the ancient Mayan calendar came to an end. Some believe the day actually comes Sunday. Modern-day Mayans say the end of the calendar phase doesn't mean the end of the world -- just the end of an era, and the start of a new one. []

Company aims to mine resource-rich asteroids

(CNN) -- Eric Anderson and Peter Diamandis pioneered the business of sending millionaire tourists to space. Now they want to mine asteroids for what they say will be tens of billions of dollars worth of resources annually for use on Earth and beyond. Seattle-area's Planetary Resources, backed by big-money investors including filmmaker James Cameron and Google executives Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, said Tuesday it plans to develop and launch a series of robotic systems and unmanned spacecraft, starting with its Arkyd-100 Earth-orbiting space telescopes that it hopes to launch by the end of 2013 to identify candidate near-Earth asteroids. The company hopes to dispatch swarms of Arkyd-300 prospecting spacecraft, which would orbit candidate asteroids and finish the process of determining what they hold, within 10 years. The Bellevue, Washington, company would then unveil a new system of spacecraft for the payoff -- mining precious metal, such as platinum, for use on Earth -- and extracting water, whose elements the company says can be used for fuel and life-support systems in space. In short, Planetary Resources hopes it will be in a very crucial and lucrative position of not only boosting terrestrial industry, but also setting up a network of fuel depots that humanity will need to better explore the solar system and beyond. "The Earth is feeling a resource pinch, and ultimately we will have the ability to turn that which is scarce into abundant," Diamandis, who co-founded Planetary Resources with Anderson in 2009 but generally kept mum about the project until this month, said at a press event in Seattle on Tuesday. "It can be done, and yes, it's very difficult ... but the returns economically and the benefit to humanity are extraordinary," added Diamandis, who also is chairman of the X Prize Foundation. Company representatives said having platinum and other metals in more abundance would ensure humanity's continued ability to develop important electronics, and perhaps make them cheaper. NASA estimates 4,700 'potentially hazardous' asteroids

CNN
(CNN) -- About 4,700 asteroids are close enough and big enough to pose a risk to Earth, NASA estimated Wednesday after studying data beamed back from an orbiting telescope. The figure -- give or take 1,500 -- is how many space rocks bigger than 100 meters (330 feet) across are believed to come within 5 million miles (8 million km) of Earth, or about 20 times farther away than the moon. "It's not something that people should panic about," said Amy Mainzer, an astronomer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. "However, we are paying attention to the issue." NASA defines a potentially hazardous asteroid as one large enough to survive the intense heat generated by entry into the atmosphere and cause damage on a regional scale or worse. The figure released Wednesday is lower than a previous rough estimate had projected, but more are now thought to be in orbits inclined like Earth's, making them more likely to cross its path. "It allows us to find the very dark asteroids, the ones that are more like a piece of coal and than shiny pavement," she said. "We can also tell the difference between an asteroid that's very large and very dark and a small one that's very shiny." Mainzer said between 20% and 30% of the estimated 4,700 potentially hazardous objects have been discovered so far. []

Mining Asteroids

Company aims to mine resource-rich asteroids

Continued from Page 28 A single 500-meter platinum-rich asteroid would have the equivalent of all the platinum-group metals ever mined on Earth, the company said. And the right 80-meter asteroid would have more than $100 billion worth of materials, Anderson said. "We can use these asteroids to grow our prosperity for the future," said Anderson, who in the 1990s founded Space Adventures with Diamandis The company brokered millionaires' rides to the international space station on Soyuz spacecraft. Planetary Resources adviser and former NASA astronaut Tom Jones said commercial enterprises like this one can do things that governments can't: build multiple, simple spacecraft at relatively low cost, while accepting the risk of losing some vessels, and produce at a higher pace. He highlighted the potential usefulness of water extraction. The cost of bringing water to the international space station is $20,000 per liter, he said. "I believe that, beyond the international space station, we won't have a permanent presence in space unless we can reduce the cost of life-support systems," Jones said. "These materials can not only spur less-costly life support, but also generate wealth, which can provide support for more exploration throughout the solar system." Anderson said the investors realize the company could fail. "But (the investors) believe that attempting this and moving the needle for space is worth it," he said. The Arkyd-100 space telescopes will benefit more than just Planetary Resources, said Chris Lewicki, the company's chief engineer and a former NASA Mars mission manager. Schools eventually will be able to access them,

making "a once-rare tool available to an entirely new audience." The company plans to be relatively small. It has about 24 engineers now, and though it is looking to hire, it doesn't anticipate hiring hundreds, Anderson said. And when mining starts, the company hopes to do it all robotically, because humans in space would increase the cost. "There may be mining expeditions that require humans, but we would really try not to if we can, because it's better business," Anderson said. The company said it doesn't currently intend to launch its own vehicles, saying it is looking for "ride share" opportunities with other space entities that it didn't name. While Planetary Resources focuses on asteroids, another company said it's the moon we should be mining. Moon Express of Mountain View, California, announced Tuesday it had recruited five top lunar scientists to join its advisory board as it makes plans to extract precious metals from the moon. The company said asteroids have been hitting the moon for ages, depositing the precious metals they carry on the lunar surface. "There is clear evidence of significant platinum group metals on the moon from Apollo samples and lunar meteorites, and we've discovered evidence for localized hot spots that will help us choose landing sites to practice mining techniques," Alan Stern, the chief scientist at Moon Express, said in a press release. "I believe that the presence of water and ease of mining platinum group elements on the Moon's surface far, far trumps arguments that NEO's (asteroids) are energetically easier to get samples from than the moon," Stern said in the release. Moon Express plans to send robots to explore mining sites on the moon, the company said. []

Claim: Researchers Have Bigfoot DNA

Researchers Claim To Have Sequenced Bigfoot DNA
Sci-TechToday.com
A genetic researcher is saying that Bigfoot DNA tests prove that the hairy creature really does exist. Dr. Melba S. Ketchum says she and her team sequenced three complete Sasquatch nuclear genomes and concluded the species is a human hybrid -- a mosaic of human and novel non-human elements. Their findings have yet to pass peer review. A Texas veterinarian says she and fellow genetic researchers have confirmed the existence of "Bigfoot," though their findings have yet to pass peer review. Dr. Melba S. Ketchum of Nacogdoches, founder of DNA Diagnostics Inc. in the eastern Texas town of Timpson, said she and her team spent five years on their study of purported Bigfoot hair and concluded they have confirmed the existence of a hominin hybrid species, the legendary creature commonly called "Bigfoot" or "Sasquatch," living in North America. There have been frequent-butunsubstantiated claims of Bigfoot sightings over the years, including some grainy film clips. In a release posted on the company's Web site Saturday, the researchers say their DNA sequencing suggests the animal is a human relative that developed about 15,000 years ago as a hybrid cross of modern Homo sapiens with an unknown primate species. Ketchum said her team has sequenced three complete Sasquatch nuclear genomes and concluded the species is a human hybrid. "Our study has sequenced 20 whole mitochondrial genomes and utilized next generation sequencing to obtain three whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples," she said in the release. "The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species. "Our data indicate that the North American Sasquatch is a hybrid species, the result of males of an unknown hominin species crossing with female Homo sapiens." Genetic testing has already ruled out Homo neanderthalis and the Denisova hominin as contributors to Sasquatch mtDNA or nuDNA, she said. "The male progenitor that contributed the unknown sequence to this hybrid is unique as its DNA is more distantly removed from humans than other recently discovered hominins like the Denisovan individual," Ketchum said. "Sasquatch nuclear DNA is incredibly novel and not at all what we had expected. While it has human nuclear DNA within its genome, there are also distinctly non-human, non-archaic hominin, and non-ape sequences. We describe it as a mosaic of human and novel non-human sequence." She said further study is needed to "better characterize and understand Sasquatch nuclear DNA."

Ketchum, who describes herself as a veterinarian with 27 years experience in genetics research, including forensics, wants public officials and law enforcement to recognize the Sasquatch as an indigenous people. "Genetically, the Sasquatch are a human hybrid with unambiguously modern human maternal ancestry," she said. "Government at all levels must recognize them as an indigenous people and immediately protect their human and constitutional rights against those who would see in their physical and cultural differences a 'license' to hunt, trap or kill them." Psychic accused in $25 million fraud

Psychic accused in $25 million fraud says she is portrayed 'as some kind of monster'
Rose Marks says clients, including novelist Jude Deveraux, were friends who valued her advice South Florida Sun Sentinel
It started with a simple psychic reading for a famous author, then spiraled into a $25 million fraud operated by a South Florida family of fortune tellers for more than 20 years, federal prosecutors say. Rose Marks and eight members of her family are accused of preying on vulnerable and gullible clients who walked into their storefront psychic businesses in upmarket neighborhoods in Fort Lauderdale and New York City. In her first public comments about the federal charges, Marks, 61, told the Sun Sentinel she did nothing wrong. "I'm innocent," Marks said. "I gave my life to these people we're talking about clients of 20 years, 30 years, 40 years. We're not talking about someone I just met and took all their money and ran off." Offering a rare glimpse inside the secret world of so-called Gypsy fortune tellers, Marks said she used her psychic abilities, Romani beliefs and common sense to help customers she thought were her friends. Prosecutors have laid out their allegations in a 28-count indictment accusing the family of operating a money-laundering, mail and wire-fraud conspiracy that fleeced clients from around the world including bestselling romance novelist Jude Deveraux. "[Investigators] turned them around and twisted their minds and portrayed me as some kind of monster," Marks said of her former clients in an interview in late December. Marks was the family matriarch and ringleader of a conspiracy that included her daughter, two sons and their spouses, granddaughter and sister, prosecutors say. All but one family member deny the allegations and the main defendants are scheduled for trial in April. One son, Michael Marks, pleaded guilty to mail and wire-fraud conspiracy last month. The women used assumed names and several called themselves Joyce Michael at their stores near The Galleria mall and the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale. In Marks' family, the paranormal was the norm, she said. She insists she has psychic abilities "a gift from God" inherited by the women of her family for hundreds of years. Marks calls it intuition or insight and explains it as the power to use parts of the brain most people can't reach. Her first psychic vision was at age 9, she said, when she accurately predicted her grandmother's sudden death. "It was scary," she said. Her grandmother had herself predicted Marks' father would die at age 72 and he did. The family are Vlax Roma, the biggest

Gypsy group in the U.S., and the women are traditionally fortune tellers, experts say. Fortune telling is legal but prosecutors say the Marks committed fraud by refusing to return clients' money and valuables, as promised. The family's lawyers, led by Fred Schwartz, want the charges dismissed, alleging serious misconduct by the government. Prosecutors have not responded to the allegations but have dropped more than half of the initial 61 charges and cut $15 million from the alleged loss after one judge called the investigation "slipshod." Marks' family emigrated from Greece in the late 1800s or early 1900s. They adhered to Romani culture and beliefs, such as paying dowries and having arranged marriages, but also tried to assimilate into American life. Their ancestors traveled in horsedrawn caravans a hundred years ago, but Marks grew up in a loving home near Newark, N.J. Her father, Steve "Boyo" Eli, was a well-to-do landowner and respected Romani judge who mediated disputes within the Gypsy community over land, inheritances, divorces and dowries, Marks said. Her mother was a psychic. Rose Marks attended public school but followed the Romani tradition of dropping out in third grade. She said she entered an arranged, and very happy, marriage at 16 or 17, and lived in Virginia until she moved to Broward County in 1998. She and her late husband also opened a Manhattan store on West 58th Street near Central Park and across the street from the famous Plaza Hotel with signs touting astrology, the "laws of attraction" and clairvoyant services. It was there Marks met multimillionaire author Deveraux, who walked into the store in January 1991 and had a psychic reading. Deveraux, now 65, began seeing Marks five or six times a week for hours at a time, Marks said. Deveraux was breaking up with her husband and sought guidance about that and her romantic interest in another man, according to

Marks and investigators. Marks said her relationship with Deveraux developed as a fuzzy blend of customer-turned-employer and friend. Within months, Deveraux "wanted me to exclusively be her assistant, her consultant, her muse," Marks said. "We came to an understanding that if I'm supposed to shut down my business and just work with her exclusively, then it would be, you know, expensive. She would have to pay me for 24 hours a day at her beck and call." Marks claimed when Deveraux asked her fee, she jokingly suggested $1 million per year and Deveraux agreed. In her defense against the charges, Marks maintains that she worked seven days a week for years as a personal assistant and life coach for Deveraux and helped her research seven novels that deal with supernatural themes. "I was her inspiration and gave her insight on Romani mysticism and beliefs in the afterlife and religion and the psychic world and the spiritual world." Deveraux, who lives in South Florida, has written more than 60 books since the 1970s, more than half of which made the New York Times bestsellers list. She did not respond to requests for comment. She previously told the Sun Sentinel that prosecutors warned her not to discuss the case publicly before she testifies at trial. Prosecutors say Deveraux lost $17 million because of her connection with Marks, though they haven't said how much went directly to her. That figure includes money Deveraux paid her ex-husband in an expensive divorce settlement that investigators said Marks advised her to sign. The spell was broken in early 2008, authorities said, when two Fort Lauderdale detectives knocked on Deveraux's hotel room door in Boca Raton and told her she was the victim of a fraud. Deveraux told the Sun Sentinel in 2011 that she was "days away from suicide" at the time. (Continued on Page 37)

Dr. Bobs Crusade For Innovation

by DR. ROBERT W CHRISTENSEN

FDA, you were WRONG! is an eye-opening account of how the FDA agency of the federal government, which is supposedly there to help protect the public, has actually been doing more harm than good in recent years; this is the story of Dr. Bob Christensen and his small medical device company, TMJ Implants, Inc., and how they confronted and overcame the corruption, abuses of power, conflicts of interest, and ignorance within the FDA in this tragic yet ultimately purposeful story. While similar to the Erin Brockovich case, Dr. Christensens David Vs. Goliath experience offers lessons for any small business entrepreneur needing an FDA approval as well as holding the FDA accountable for uniform approval processes. Dr. Christensens company, TMJ Implants, Inc., originally held the earliest US patent, in 1960, for the reconstruction of the degenerated or missing temporomandibular joints, and the product sold extremely well and helped thousands of patients, including hundreds at the Mayo Clinic. After nearly forty years of success with TMJ patients, the FDA implemented the Medical Device Amendment in 1999 for TMJ devices and curtailed Dr. Christensens sales; as a pre-1976 Medical Device Amendment item, the device should have been grandfathered under earlier law. There had been no adverse patient reactions to the implants. At this time, the FDA disapproved his Premarket Approval (PMA). Dr. Christensen had been warned by Dr. Susan Runner, Director of the Dental Division of the FDAs Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), not to attend the upcoming panel hearing as he would surely be turned down; however, Dr. Christensen boldly brought his staff of scientific experts with him and received a 9-0 approval from the initial FDA panel. Dr. Runner, however, saw to it that a second panel was convened, a panel that disapproved Dr. Christensens device by a 8-0 vote. As a result of the second panel, Dr. Christensens devices were removed from the market for a period of some twenty months, which cost the company millions of dollars in lost revenue and a staff reduction from thirty-eight to fifteen individuals. Throughout the process, there was evidence of conflicts of interest and bias that Dr. Christensen and his company had to endure. Several allegations have recently come to light that detail the connection between Dr. Runner and TMJ Concepts, a competitor of TMJ Implants. Download FDA, you were WRONG!at www.Amazon.com where you can purchase the Kindle version today. Dr. Christensen is a retired oral and maxillofacial surgeon who pioneered the design and implantation procedures for temporomandibular devices in 1960 which were used to correct the internal derangement disorder caused by this degenerative joint disease of which 90% occurs in younger women.

Canadas Witch Trials

Canadas witch trials: Fake sorcerers and sham psychics abound despite hundred-year-old law to protect people
National Post
A little-used law that cracks down on pretend witchcraft remains in force more than a century after its enactment, but cities across Canada are still crawling with sham conjurers, fake sorcerers and fraudulent psychics. I think the rarity of the charge comes down to the rarity of people coming forward, said Detective Constable James Turnbull of Toronto police. Youre trying to explain to people that theyve been victimized and they dont believe you; they believe the guys power is real. Last week, his division charged selfdescribed healer Gustavo Gomez under Section 365 of the Criminal Code, an archaic law that targets everyone who fraudulently pretends to exercise or to use any kind of witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment or conjuration. Mr. Gomez reached clients through Spanish-language radio and print ads in Quebec and Ontario, convincing people they were under a curse, then offering to lift it for $10,000 to $15,000. Toronto Police are now warning of similar curse-lifters prowling the citys Chinese community. They approach elderly Cantonese speakers on the street, warn them of a curse, convince them to fill a bag with valuables for a special ritual, then run off with it. The scam has been rampant in Vancouver, where con artists will sometimes throw in promises of lucky jade bracelets or bottles of blessed mystical water. Weve had about seven [incidents] reported to us, Detective Constable Jay Amundsen of Vancouver police told Postmedia News. Were talking about $100,000. Performing supernatural cons on the street is a new twist on a scam that traditionally involves fraudsters posing as palm readers to attract clients, convince them of a curse and offer a pricey antidote. They usually start off cheap or free, and then hook you and charge more and more money and promise things that are impossible for them to deliver, wrote Tara Greene in an email to the National Post. Her website says shes a Toronto astrologer and psychic, although she prefers the term intuitive counsellor. She uses a familiar toolbox of crystal balls and tea leaves but is careful to note, for legal reasons, that her services are for entertainment purposes. I use my intuition, I can see psychically [but] it is the clients choice what to do with the information I give them and I am not responsible for that, she said. Vancouver psychic Cassandra MacLeane publishes tips on her website to steer people away from fraudulent readers, arguing

they get honest psychics tarred with the same brush. The tricks these psychics use are as old as written history, such as breaking open a chickens egg to reveal a black omen, said Ms. MacLeane. One year I met two professors from UBC who fell victim, she said. That just gives you a sense of how convincing they are. In decades past, psychics and palm readers were occasionally targeted in police raids, but today its buyer beware. Its up to a persons own beliefs whether they choose to believe in this stuff or not, said Sergeant Randy Fincham, a Vancouver Police spokesman. Many spell casters and sorcerers operate overseas, beyond the easy reach of the Canadian law. My spells are 100% real not fake, so if you need real spells that work then call me and i [sic] can help you, reads a recent Kijiji ad linked to a Toronto phone number. In August, fear of fraudulent sorcerers prompted eBay to drop all sellers offering spells; curses; hexing; conjuring; magic; prayers; blessing services; magic potions [and] healing sessions. Section 365 was written into the inaugural 1892 draft of the Criminal Code and stands among anti-duelling measures and alarming the Queen as one of the most rarely used sections in Canadian law. Derived from medieval English laws that sought to detect and burn witches, the Canadian version may have come from a desire to control the Gypsy populations, says a 1999 criminology thesis by Tracesandra McDonald at the University of Ottawa. In the Toronto area, however, police are using it every few months. In 2009, for instance, Vishwantee Persaud, 36, was charged under Section 365 for employing fake supernatural powers to defraud a lawyer of $100,000. The witchcraft charges were later replaced by fraud charges. Justin Trottier, chief spokesman for the Centre for Inquiry, questioned why the law seems to pick on witches, while con artists with

more conventional religious beliefs only face standard fraud charges. When you defraud people out of their savings or you risk their health, it doesnt matter if its done by mainstream religious leaders or witch doctors or Tarot card readers, the law should be applied consistently, he said. Personally, I am all for this law, wrote Nicole Cooper, a second-degree high priestess with the Wiccan Church of Canada, in an email to the Post. Many people every year that I personally hear about and surely many more are bilked out of thousands of dollars by unscrupulous charlatans offering spiritual services in exchange for high fees. Getting a conviction is a different story. Legal scholars suggest a Section 365 charge risks bumping up against the freedom of conscience and religion rights guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Prosecutors would have to be able to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the bad guy doesnt actually have these powers and I dont even know how youd go about proving that, said Sgt. Fincham. []

We Are Stronger Than We Think

By Ted Unarce
WE ARE STRONGER THAN WE THINK by Ted Unarce BOOK DESCRIPTION The economy of the worlds better-developed nations has come to a stagger. Those in First World countries are often astonished to see their homes, their life savings, even their 401ks - many of the things they took for granted dissipate, as if into thin air. Luxuries in life, from the capacity to afford anything from a fancy meal to a modest retirement, are now out of reach for so many. And while those in, say, the United States struggle in light of the vanishing middle-class, those working in India, China, and Russia, though not unaffected by recent economic catastrophes, have apparently not been struck as hard as many of us here. What might help serve to explain why the above-mentioned three countries have been impacted arguably far less than the United States - indeed the First World as a whole? In answer it might be pointed out that obviously in addition to their stature as populous large nations, all three, more often than not, are considered Third World nations. Since America also is populous and large, we will exclude this factor from our considerations. We are left with the idea that Third World countries, especially larger ones, might be better-suited to withstand the onslaught of economic devastation than the rest of us? WE ARE STRONGER THAN WE THINK makes study of our resilient Third World populations, of those strong frugal souls who, despite life under heavy duress, are able not only to create, but to oftentimes remain happier and more at peace with themselves than the rest of us. What makes them tick? How can they be so able, not only to survive but to thrive? This book investigates this phenomenon in great depth, wherein our focus is not only on how less-developed nations are uplifting themselves, but how we might also uplift ourselves by learning from them. Some might express skepticism at this, which is understandable in light of how many of us in First World countries continue to be quite unconsciously inculcated with schema involving ideals like the questionability of used merchandise, or that technological savvy and the supremacy of science dictate in the end the worthiness of a nation-state. Let us, however, divert the reader?s attention to consider just one of these topics: The undervaluing of used merchandise. We offer too incidentally that in most Third World countries, second-hand goods are not so easily cast aside as they are here in America. Clothing in developing nations is much more likely to be passed down from person to person, and merchandise there is valued for its functionality, rather than for whether it is in fashion. On a related note (but nonetheless critical) - food there is almost never wasted. Bewitched by Expensive False Promises

Bewitched by very expensive false promises
by Jessica Smith - Metro Toronto
Rick first went to see Angel because he wanted to find his ex-girlfriend. He was responding to an ad by a psychic who calls himself the Angel of Love. He returned to Angel, repeatedly, because he wanted his bands music to be heard around the world. Today, the ex-girlfriend hasnt returned, the band is still unknown and Rick is $11,000 poorer. Rick doesnt want his real name used because hes deeply embarrassed. Hes an intelligent man who holds a good job with the provincial government. Police say his case is not unique. Last week, Toronto police laid fraud charges against a man claiming to be a witchdoctor. On Wednesday, police again cautioned the public about three women claiming to be psychics who preyed on two Chinese victims. There is a fine line between psychics who break the law and those who dont. According to Toronto police spokesman Const. Tonyo Vella, offering a psychic reading for money is legal. It becomes fraud if the psychic knowingly frightens the client into giving him money. Vella added there is a law against pretending to practice witchcraft, but its legal to believe you are offering a real psychic reading. Rick says Angel told him an evil spirit was causing his problems. For a fee, he claimed to be able to remove the spirit. Rick met Angel and his female assistant at their office at Dufferin and Eglington West. To start off its going to be $900. So I went and I took $900 from my Visa and gave it to Angel. He was told to drink a cup of liquid. I started barfing. I started barfing right in a cup. I said its too much. He said its just the start. Rick returned to Angel many times since his first visit last spring. He spent another $3,000, before being told to phone their leader, Juan, in Miami. That man asked Rick for another $11,000. Juan convinced him the evil spirit in the netherworld would obey their commands, for a price. He promised him Angel would show him the evil spirit in person. I took out $8,000 more. It was the most I could get, he said. I started crying, man. He said OK, enough, well work on it for you. Today, Rick says he was scammed. He hasnt gone to the police and doesnt want his coworkers to know. You could go to the police and all theyd do is laugh, he said. What am I supposed to do? What am I supposed to do now? Thats money I dont even have. Im paying that back. Angel never did show him an evil spirit. It never happened, never happened, he said. My moneys gone though. Theyre happy about it. Theyre laughing. Probably got a new

car. Oh f***, its beyond me now. Rick hasnt given up on psychics, though. He said hes believed in their power since he was a child and his uncle, a doctor, told him that one psychic in a million was the real deal. Hes been looking ever since. []

Psychic accused in $25 million fraud says she is portrayed 'as some kind of monster'
Continued from Page 32
The way Marks tells it, she loved Deveraux as her closest friend they shopped at South Florida malls, watched movies such as "The Passion of The Christ," and talked and talked. Deveraux moved to Fort Lauderdale in 2005 after her 8-year-old son, Sam, died in a motorcycle accident in North Carolina, and Marks said she spent months caring for her bereaved friend. Investigators, however, said the Marks family used the boy's death and several miscarriages Deveraux had suffered over the years to victimize and control her. According to court testimony, they told her the child was somewhere between heaven and hell and she had to work with the psychics to be reunited with him in the afterlife. Marks said the notion that she controlled the author is laughable, and she has numerous examples of Deveraux not following her advice. "I have no one under my spell. I don't know why they call me the matriarch, either, because nobody listens to me," Marks said. Marks said she used tarot cards and taught clients to put positive "energy out into the universe" but said she did no ritual cleansing of gold coins, no clearing of curses or consulting with Michael the Archangel, as prosecutors allege. Marks and her lawyer say her alleged victims were mostly educated women with good jobs, including the novelist, a corporate lawyer and a tax accountant.

"These are not stupid people, they were able to make choices and decisions in their lives whether they wanted to continue me consulting with them," Marks said. Marks said the charges whether they stand up to scrutiny or not have already destroyed her business. Since their August 2011 arrests, she and most of her relatives are not allowed work as psychics. She spent a month in jail, lost her waterfront home on the Intracoastal in Fort Lauderdale and, if convicted, faces up to 20 years in prison for each of the serious charges. "How am I ever going to put my life back together?" Marks said. "How do I start over again? It's impossible." []

RUMORS
Why do people believe wild, unsubstantiated stories? According to some psychologists, rumors make things simpler than they really are. And while people wont believe just anything, its surprising what stories have flourished in the past. Many of these tales are still in circulation today... RUMOR McDonalds adds earthworms to its hamburger meat. HOW IT SPREAD Apparently the stories began in Atlanta in 1979 and were originally aimed at a competitor, Wendys. But, as a psychologist commented, industrial rumors tend to gravitate to the industry leader. Another possibility: an article in Readers Digest about worm farms mentioned that such farms tend to attract animals that like to eat worms, making the farm a veritable McDonalds for such animals. WHAT HAPPENED To fight it, McDonalds held a press conference in Atlanta and produced a letter from the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture stating that the burgers were, and always have been, 100% beef. Strangest Non-Stories of 2012

Total Hooey: The Strangest Non-Stories of 2012
Benjamin Radford
A lot of things happened in 2012, including scientific breakthroughs, a presidential re-election, and a tragic school shooting. But a lot of things didn't happen this past year. We realize it's a little strange to discuss things that never occurred after all, countless things didn't happen in 2012, from an asteroid hitting Earth, to Justin Bieber marrying a supermodel, to Abraham Lincoln climbing out of his grave to praise Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" as being more historically accurate than "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." But there were a handful of stories that made the news, often with a splash, promising big news, and turned out to be non-stories, nonevents. Here are a few. Eagle Snatches Baby in Canadian Park It was a bizarre, terrifying sight seen by millions of people: A large bird videotaped in the skies above a Canadian park suddenly swooping down and snatching a baby. The bird drops the child a few seconds later, flying away and leaving shocked bystanders. A day after the video went viral, students at an animation school, Centre NAD, admitted that they had created the hoaxed video. A statement issued by the school credited (or blamed) three of its students and explained, "both the eagle and the kid were created in 3D animation and integrated in to the film afterwards." As interesting and scary as the event was, it turned out to be a non-story. Mayan Apocalypse According to many, Dec. 21, 2012, was to be the end of times. Or the beginning of the best of times, depending on who you talked to. 2012inspired folks tended to fall into one of two categories: The gloom-and-doomers expected global cataclysm involving death, fire, planetary collapse, pole shifting, and other unspecified natural (or even supernatural) disasters. The second kind were more optimistic, expecting Dec. 21 to usher in a new age of cosmic peace, harmony, and global enlightenment. Scholars patiently explained that despite dramatic claims to the contrary, the Mayans didn't actually hold much significance for the date, and they certainly didn't think the world would end on that date. Their calendar did not, as many assumed, "end" on that day; it was simply the end of one cycle and the beginning of another. Much of the hype and concern over the date originated not from ancient nor modern Mayas, but instead New Agers. Neither doomsday nor world peace broke out, leaving some people relieved, others confused, and many amused. [Oops! 11 Failed Doomsday Predictions] Bigfoot Proven Through DNA

This was also to be the year that genetic testing confirmed the existence of Bigfoot. According to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing research by a Texas veterinarian, "A team of scientists ... confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads. Not only that, but Bigfoot is a halfhuman hybrid that had sex with human women approximately 15,000 years ago or so the theory goes. If it all sounds a little dubious, it should: there was no evidence offered at all. The evidence, which has allegedly taken five years to collect and analyze, has yet to be published in any peer-reviewed scientific journal. Until and unless scientists are allowed to examine the evidence, Bigfoot DNA will remain a non-story. UFOs Invade Denver In November, an unusual video of mysterious dark objects moving very quickly and erratically over the skies of Denver, Colo., caused a national stir. An anonymous UFO buff showed KDVR Fox News reporter Heidi Hemmat home videos he had taken from an open field during the past summer of "strange objects ... nobody can explain." The UFOs, it was claimed, seemed to be taking off and flying over the Mile High City at around Noon on many different occasions. The TV report featured an aviation expert named Steve Cowell who stated categorically that in his opinion the objects he saw in the video were not airplanes, helicopters, nor birds. Many people favored the flying saucer theory, though none were able to explain why no one in Denver had noticed the extraterrestrial spacecraft that repeatedly flew over their city at midday. Skeptics noted that the objects caught on film

moved a lot like insects flying in the air, and that the cameraman probably simply recorded bugs. With no further evidence of aliens, the buzz about the Denver UFO finally faded away. [UFO Quiz: What's Really Out There] Denver wasn't the only city to have its skies lit up with alleged UFOs. A single week in December saw strange illuminated objects hovering in the sky above San Francisco and Brooklyn, N.Y. The dancing lights, it seems, were likely the usual UFO fare: some sort of floating object with a light. "It looks to me like it could have been balloons, carrying lights," Bing Quock, assistant director of the Morrison Planetarium at the California Academy of Sciences, told CBS San Francisco, of the San Francisco lights. Another idea: Chinese floating lanterns, which have spurred at least one other, now-debunked, UFO sighting. A foursome of lights above Lebanon, Mo., in May, shown in a shaky night-vision video, also sparked a UFO report. While the videographer Jim Barnhill was sure the sight was of extraterrestrial origin, it seemed to have all the makings of an Earthly aircraft: blinking strobe lights characteristic of known aircraft; and a flight altitude, pattern and speed characteristic of known aircraft. It would have been nice if Bigfoot had been proven or aliens had made their presence known (and not nice if an eagle had snatched a baby or the world ended). But there's always next year...

ABOUT THIS BOOK : The really extraordinary thing about this book is that it tells the story of how one mother embarked on her feverish course of involvement in the AIDS community, in large part to help herself come to terms with the possibility of her son's death. But all that work really doesn't prepare her. She becomes incredibly intimate with a series of strangers, yet she and her son have more and more trouble talking about HIS illness, which is the reason she is doing all this in the first place. She becomes indispensable at the bedsides of countless other people, but when Gary is dying, she still feels helpless, disconnected and as if she'd never set foot in an AIDS hospital room. What is moving about this book is the fact that all this preparation doesn't prepare, because NOTHING can prepare her. Susan Choi, Pulitzer Prize Finalist, American Woman
Freda Wagman is one of the most sincere and caring persons that I have had the pleasure of interviewing. Freda brings with her honesty, integrity, compassion and love to all those who lives she has touched, especially her late son Gary. - Rob McConnell Host of The X Zone Radio & TV Show This book will make you shake your head, laugh, cry and ponder over what has happened during the last 20 years of the AIDS crisis. It is a story of a mother who has to come to terms not only with her son's illness but her fierce protection of his feelings. Beautifully written, you learn how fragile and random life can be. The strength that grows when you open your heart and mind helps us heal from losses life deals all of us. Revealed is a generous soul who has her prized possession taken from her and can only deal with it by giving back to others around her. - Peter Waterloo, San Francisco I was so very overwhelmed by this compelling narrative of the scourge, AIDS epidemic. I was reminded of the Bubonic Plague and what people suffered in those horrific years. What a wonderful and empathetic soul the author is and so giving to others in desperate need of love and care. The account of the saddening travails of her own son, Gary, brought me to tears. Perhaps only a mother can feel and understand what those people were (and are) going through and what looms in their futures. This is truly an important true story. We have much to learn from Ms. Wagman's wide experiences with a variety of young people who had one tragic thing in common -- a war with AIDS. - Bea and Woody, Michigan

Alien Like Skulls Found in Mexico

Archeologists Unearth Alien-Like Skulls In A Mexico Cemetery
Red Orbit
Archeologists have unearthed what looks like a cone-shaped alien skull from 1,000 years ago in Mexico. The skull, which dates from 945 A.D. to 1308 A.D., was discovered accidentally while digging an irrigation system in the northwest state of Sonora in Mexico. Cristina Garcia Moreno, who worked on the project with Arizona State University, explained that 13 of the 25 skulls found in the Hispanic cemetery had these deformed heads. We dont know why this population specifically deformed their heads, Moreno told ABC News. The site, known as El Cementerio, was discovered in 1999, but the team just completed their analysis of the skeletal remains last month. They plan to continue their research during the next field season. Archaeologists also discovered artifacts on the site, like pendants, nose rings and jewelry. They said the deformation of human skulls was part of an ancient ritual that took place 1,000 years ago. The deformation was achieved by binding a persons head between two blocks of wood to apply pressure on the skull by wrapping the wood with bands. Cranial deformation has been used by different societies in the world as a ritual practice, or for distinction of status within a group or to distinguish between social groups, Moreno told ABC News. The reason why these individuals at El Cementerio deformed their skulls is still unknown. The team said that many of the bones unearthed were the remains of children, leading them to believe the practice of deforming skulls may have been inlet and dangerous. The Chinook of the U.S. Northwest and the Choctaw of the U.S. Southeast both were known for practicing skull deformation as well. Moreno told ABC that people deformed their heads in Mexico because they wanted to distinguish important people, or they wanted to distinguish people from one group from another.

MAHONEY: The end of the world

By Jeff Mahoney The Hamilton Spectator
Despite some extreme weather conditions being forecast for Dec. 21, including widespread habitat annihilation mixed throughout the day with a rivers-of-blood apocalypse (so dress in layers!), Rob McConnell says theres nothing to worry about. In fact, he and others are going to be saying it for 26 hours straight on McConnells popular syndicated radio program, The X Zone, all through Dec. 21, with a little around

the edges. He runs The X Zone out of his basement studio on a quiet street on southeast Hamilton Mountain, but it reaches listeners and viewers all over the world. The only thing thats coming to an end that day are the rumours of our death (yours, mine, the planets), says McConnell. Theyre not just greatly exaggerated, to paraphrase Mark Twain. Theyre completely unfounded. And dont blame it on the Mayans. You mightve heard about the end of the world, which some the apocalyp-synchers say is foretold in the Mayan calendar as happening Dec. 21, 2012. Its not, says McConnell. He has studied Mayan culture. He and his wife Laura Rogers actually travelled to Mexico and Guatemala earlier this year and talked to some of the 1.5 million Mayans who live there. Theyre laughing at us, says McConnell, because were so gullible. When you strip away the gunk and flamboyant prophesy, whats left is an obvious misunderstanding. It would be like someone prophesying that the world will end on Dec. 31 on the basis of our calendar. It doesnt end there; the cycle starts over. But, he adds, some people simply want to believe. Theyre catastrophizers. And what theyre probably going to do, starting around Dec. 23, is go ransacking the calendar for another date to pin the end of the world to. There have been at least 280 doomsday predictions, says McConnell. Were still here. What he dislikes so much about this one is that it seems to have found such a vogue among young people. Y2K was more of an elderly concern. Now its the kids. His granddaughter at university was telling him that its got many of her peers pretty spooked. On Thursday, Dec. 20, at 11 p.m. Eastern, through Saturday, Dec. 22, at 1 a.m. McConnell will host a live broadcast featuring expert guests and other features aimed at debunking the Dec. 21 hysteria. McConnell, who has had a long career in radio broadcasting as well as research into the

psychology behind the paranormal, has been doing The X Zone since 1993. It tackles subjects such as UFOs, conspiracies and doomsday crazes with an open mind but also a readiness to debunk. The show is popular worldwide, especially in the United States, where its carried on radio affiliates from Oklahoma to Oregon, and has almost a million and a half podcast downloads, says McConnell. Its available online, with video, at www.xzone2012.com. McConnell, who has also worked as a criminal investigator, says hes fascinated by mysteries, hoaxes (especially when media are involved) and the challenge of solving them. Everything from War of the Worlds (the Orson Welles broadcast) to Hale-Bopp. Hes friends with Art Bell and others in the paranormal media programming community and McConnell describes his particular approach as nonsensationalistic. I think there are real mysteries but we get distracted by false ones. You have to dig down to the real mystery. Theres an explanation, but to find it is like peeling through the layers of an onion. McConnell is a tough critic of UFO sightings, even his own. When he was a boy in Montreal, he and his brother saw in the sky a cigar-shaped light with a circle in it. If I were sensationalistic Id say it was a sighting, but I dont know what I saw. There might be an explanation. But it piqued my curiosity. []

Robert Lamars: Theatre of the Mind

Theatre of the MIND presents a tremendous collection of truly fascinating, yet totally unrehearsed, performances by volunteer audience members under the guidance of Robert LAMAR. These volunteers become the stars of this expertly produced presentation that should not be confused with what many would consider traditional hypnosis. Throughout Theatre of the MIND, LAMAR invites his audience into a world where he encourages volunteers to enter a highly focused state of attention simply through applied suggestion. Perhaps, for the first time in their lives, participants let their hidden creative personalities leap to their full potential as LAMAR masterfully taps into their unexplored creativity. Volunteers may assume the persona of popular cultural icons like Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Myley Cyrus or Justin Bieber. All of these pseudo stars may share the stage with another volunteer preoccupied with capturing a six foot grasshopper in one of many hilarious scenes. The performances of the audience volunteers are completely unrehearsed. In fact, as Theatre of the MIND unfolds, it is very difficult to believe the participants are simply audience members. Because of this, each performance of Theatre of the MIND is totally unique. Every show is a one of a kind experience. In addition, a technically clever combination of music, lighting and special effects combine to create a modern show that appeals to today's audiences. Theatre of the MIND is an original and a professional family show. Volunteers are not embarrassed or humiliated in any way, and all in attendance benefit from LAMAR's nearly three decades of study and experience in this specialized art. This is certainly one of Canada's most consistently acclaimed hypnotic attractions. Audiences are certain to be amazed whenever they enter Theatre of the MIND. ABOUT ROBERT LAMAR: Robert LAMAR has devoted much of his life to the study and understanding of magic, hypnosis, memory training and parapsychology. Born in the province of Ontario, Canada, he developed an interest in this specialized field at a very early age. When he was just six he started learning the art of magic through trick packages he ordered from magic catalogues. When he was only twelve he saw one of the world's truly great entertainers, The Impossiblist, Peter Reveen. This event captivated the young Robert and he was further drawn by the power to perform and entertain. He eventually met Reveen and the friendship they established has endured for many years. He has also spent many years studying the allied arts, specifically mesmerism, hypnotism and magic as a performance art. His studies led him to the conclusion that the field he wished to enter was not one of formal hypnotism but that of a highly focused state of attention through which he could tap into a person's natural creativity. This was the formative basis for developing Theatre of the MIND. Robert LAMAR, in addition to more than thirty years devoted to the study of his craft, is a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians (I.B.M.), a member of the Society of American Magicians and is also a member of the International Magic Society. The I.B.M. is the largest organization of its kind in the world. Membership is achieved only through sponsorship and Robert LAMAR's sponsor into the society was provided by his very good friend and mentor, Peter Reveen. Tens of thousands of Canadians have been amazed and entertained by Theatre of the MIND through live shows and appearances on both CTV and CBC television. This is the signature of the most consistently praised hypnotic attraction.

Psychic Predictions for 2013

Psychic predictions for 2013 and fails of 2012
Yahoo.com
At this time of year a lot of media outlets turn to psychics to enlighten us all about what to expect for the year ahead. Maybe it's a bit of light-hearted fun or something more financially sinister but let's face it, if people weren't interested in psychics they wouldn't get so much attention. What's important to remember is what was predicted the year before is rarely dusted off from the shelf and analysed. So what did some famous psychics predict for 2012? Getting it wrong Self-confessed medium Sylvia Browne has appeared across US television shows, including Larry King Live, for years. She claims, as many psychics do, to help police solve crimes and find missing persons. But when 11-year-old Shawn Hornbeck went missing in 2002, his parents turned to Sylvia on The Montel Williams Show, hoping to find some answers on the whereabouts of their son. Shawn was kidnapped while riding his bike and Sylvia told them he was dead. He was discovered alive in 2007. Some of Browne's predictions 2012 include earthquakes in Japan (it's worth noting Japan has more than 1500 seismic activities annually) and that a cure for Multiple Sclerosis would be found. Perhaps her biggest fail was that Barack Obama would not be re-elected as President of the United States. An election year is a publicity dream for clairvoyants. Failing to pick a winner in a two-horse race Mitchell Coombes, who appears weekly on The Morning Show, was also on the election bandwagon. He said, during a segment on predictions for 2012, that President Obama would not be reelected. Other prognostications included Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's relationship not lasting (they became engaged in August) and worries about a disaster in China. He also predicted the US economy would bounce back, which isn't too hard from the lows it reached, but can anyone say fiscal cliff? So what does 2013 hold for us? According to Mitchell, Prince William will become king with Prince Charles being bypassed, and we'll face some of the hottest days on record. There is also some good news for Prime Minister Julia Gillard. He said she will be reelected but if you watch his predictions from 2012 Mitchell is adamant there would be a Coalition victory. Many psychics tend to focus on the Royals and celebrities. Mitchell foresees health complications for the Queen's husband which is perhaps unsurprising since Prince Philip is 91 and has

spent much time in hospital in 2012. Celebrity deaths Self-described 'Psychic to the Stars', Psychic Nikki, has listed more than 200 predictions on her website. She takes credit for envisaging the deaths of Amy Winehouse and Elizabeth Taylor, but upon closer inspection of bucket loads of celebs in her 2011 'health/death watch' list Ms Taylor was notably absent. For 2012, she predicted a marriage for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, that a country music legend will pass and that Kim Kardashian would re-marry and have a baby. EDIT: So it turns out Nikki got this one right. These are all yet to occur, as is an obscure forecast that the Holy Grail would be found. Doing away with flim-flam Perhaps all our psychics should take up the James Randi Educational Foundation offer of $1 million for anyone who can show under proper observing conditions, evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event. If they don't use their gift for financial gain or it's not about predicting lottery numbers, do the test anyway and donate the proceeds to science, which does use logic, reason and evidence.

Some of Psychic Nikkis Predictions for 2013

- Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will marry, and I see another child. But she has to watch her health. - Jennifer Aniston will have a child, or at least pregnancy and a marriage. But I also see another man besides (fianc) Justin Theroux. - I see a marriage for Kim Kardashian. - Taylor Swift has to be careful around

transportation. I see a handsome cowboy type around her, possibly business and romance combined. - (The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) may have a set of twins in the future. - Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake may have a kid, but their marriage is doomed in the future when one of them has a roving eye. - Justin Bieber will do more acting. There could be a sitcom. He has to be careful of fast cars or red ones. - Helen Hunt will be nominated for an Academy Award for The Surrogate and Keira Knightley for Anna Karenina. Meryl Streep may be nominated again. Daniel Day-Lewis will be nominated for Lincoln and Sir Anthony Hopkins could also receive an Oscar nomination. - Prime Minister Stephen Harper will work well with the American president, but there could be a crisis where he is tested. He also has to watch for danger. - (U.S.) President (Barack) Obama will try to turn the economy around, but it will be hard with all the natural disasters coming. He is in extreme danger during the next four years and he may not finish his term. - U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden has to watch health and danger also. He could be replaced, maybe by a woman. - It will take a long time for the economy to pick up because of natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks, and wars in the Middle East and Asia. But there could be a gold rush in Canada. - I see a lot of earthquake activity on the West Coast of the United States right up to British Columbia and Alaska. The Yellowstone Series Born of fire, the untamed Yellowstone wilderness challenges the hearts and minds of all who journey there. First called Wonderland by the awestruck explorers of the nineteenth century, Yellowstone formed in volcanic violence and was sculpted by ice for over fifty million years. America's first national park served as the scene for Indian war, army occupation, and exploitation by the railroads. In 1988, the world watched on the nightly news as over half the park burned. Up to thirty thousand people fought the fires directly, and over a million visited the park during the burning. Each year, over three million people carry away memories that remain long after they return home to Houston, Osaka, or Frankfurt. Her love affair with the Yellowstone region began when she did Geology Field Camp near the park. Linda later returned to Wyoming to do field work for her master's thesis. Since, Linda has visited the park in every season, accessing the archives for the rich history of both the land, and man's brief tenure there. Now, go to one exceptional place, this land of unexpected violence and soothing peace. In each story, the spectacular setting serves as a major character. Linda Jacons is the author of Jackson Hole Journey (November 2010), Lake of Fire (October 2007), Rain of Fire (June 2006), Summer of Fire (June 2005) and are available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and her mwebsite below.

From the Industrial revolution and onward, the world has become an environment that is overflowing with dangerous toxins. Mass manufacturing has resulted in thousands of chemical pollutants being released in the atmosphere, water, and soil. As well, there has been a widespread increase of chemicals being added to almost every type of food and retail product. With this overwhelming chemical exposure, there has been an increase in research and studies showing the life threatening impacts on our health and well being. In her book, Our Chemical Lives And The Hijacking of Our DNA, author Catherine J Frompovich delves into the effects of a chemical laden world on the body at a cellular level.
ABOUT CATHERINE J FROMPOVICH: As a result of her lifelong interest in nature and the natural way, Catherine J. Frompovich matriculated in holistic modalities and natural nutrition. During her studies that led to advanced degrees in Nutrition and Holistic Health Sciences and a Certification in Orthomolecular Theory and Practice, she came to realize how important it is to follow the "owner's manual" that comes with the human body - Nature's intended way of life, living, and healthcare. She spent numerous years in practice as a consulting nutritionist. Realizing there virtually were no interactive books on nutrition, she wrote several for children and adults. Some still are offered and available on amazon.com as "collectors items." In the late 1970s and early 1980s, her books were used by teachers in elementary schools to teach nutrition, a subject - and lifestyle - that she feels truly is imperative in maintaining one's health from its prenatal stage and throughout life. At one point in her career during the 1980s, she had a cooking show on cable TV. Of course, it was devoted to the natural way of preparing food. For years she worked as a healthcare rights advocate to ensure that the "powers to be" would not have their way in destroying alternative healthcare and its modalities as "quackery." For five years, she was the editor of The Healthcare Rights Advocate, a 32 page quarterly newsletter centered on the politics of healthcare in the 1980s. In the 1990s she represented alternative healthcare interests on Capitol Hill, Washington, DC. Writing always has been in her genes, so when Catherine's husband became ill, she worked from home as a freelance journalist. As such she wrote and produced two TV shows. One, Turn Off The Violence, was nominated for the 1996 Telly Award. Her work has been published in The Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and other alternative healthcare journals, airline travel magazines, community newspapers, and national magazines.

The 1st Moonwalker - Neil Armstrong

An X Zone Tribute For Neil Armstrong
Mark. That same year, Armstrong joined the astronaut program. He and his family moved to Houston, Texas, and Armstrong served as the command pilot for his first mission, Gemini VIII. He and fellow astronaut David Scott were launched into the earth's orbit on March 16, 1966. While in orbit, they were able to briefly dock their space capsule with the Gemini Agena target vehicle. This was the first time two vehicles had successfully docked in space. During this maneuver, however, they experienced some problems and had to cut their mission short. They landed in the Pacific Ocean nearly 11 hours after the mission's start, and were later rescued by the U.S.S. Mason. Moon Landing Armstrong faced an even bigger challenge in 1969. Along with Michael Collins and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, he was part of NASA's first manned mission to the moon. The trio were launched into space on July 16, 1969. Serving as the mission's commander, Armstrong piloted the Lunar Module to the moon's surface on July 20, 1969, with Buzz Aldrin aboard. Collins remained on the Command Module. At 10:56 PM, Armstrong exited the Lunar Module. He said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," as he made his famous first step on the moon. For about two and a half hours, Armstrong and Aldrin collected samples and conducted experiments. They also took photographs, including their own footprints. Returning on July 24, 1969, the Apollo 11 craft came down in the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii. The crew and the craft were picked up by the U.S.S. Hornet, and the three astronauts were put into quarantine for three weeks. Beforelong, the three Apollo 11 astronauts were given a warm welcome home. Crowds lined the streets of New York City to cheer on the famous heroes who were honored in a ticker-tape parade. Armstrong received numerous awards for his efforts, including the Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Later Contributions Armstrong remained with NASA, serving as deputy associate administrator for aeronautics until 1971. After leaving NASA, he joined the faculty of the University of Cincinnati as a professor of aerospace engineering. Armstrong remained at the university for eight years. Staying active in his field, he served as the chairman of Computing Technologies for Aviation, Inc., from 1982 to 1992. Helping out at a difficult time, Armstrong served as vice chairman of the Presidential Commission on the space shuttle Challenger accident in 1986. The commission investigated the explosion of the Challenger on January 28, 1986, which took the lives of its crew, including school teacher Christa McAuliffe. Death & Legacy Despite being one of the most famous astronauts in history, Armstrong largely shied away from the public eye. He gave a rare interview to the news program 60 Minutes in 2006. He described the moon to interviewer Ed Bradley, saying "It's a brilliant surface in that sunlight. The horizon seems quite close to you because the curvature is so much more pronounced than here on earth. It's an interesting place to be. I recommend it." That same year, his authorized biography came out. First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong was written by James R. Hansen, who conducted interviews with Armstrong, his family, and his friends and associates. Even in his final years, Armstrong remained committed to space exploration. The press-shy astronaut returned to the spotlight in 2010 to express his concerns over changes made to the U.S. space program. He testified in Congress against President Barack Obama's decision to cancel the Constellation program, which included another mission to the moon. Obama also sought to encourage private companies to get involved in the space travel business and to move forward with more unmanned space missions. Taking this new decision, Armstrong said, would cost the United States its leadership position in space exploration. "America is respected for its contributions it has made in learning to sail on this new ocean. If the leadership we have acquired through our investment is simply allowed to fade away, other nations will surely step in where we have faltered. I do not believe that would be in our best interests," he told Congress, according to a report on NewsHour. Armstrong underwent a heart bypass operation in August 2012. A few weeks later, on August 25, 2012, Neil Armstrong died of "complications resulting from cardiovascular procedures" at the age of 82. He is survived by his second wife Carol in Indian Hill, Ohio, and his two sons from his first marriage. He and his first wife divorced in 1994. Shortly after his death, his family released a statement: "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." News of Armstrong's death quickly spread around the world. President Obama was among those offering their condolences to his family and sharing their remembrances of the late space pioneer. "Neil was among the greatest of American heroesnot just of his time, but of all time," Obama said, according to the Los Angeles Times. His Apollo 11 colleague Buzz Aldrin said that "I know I am joined by millions of others in mourning the passing of a true American hero and the best pilot I ever knew. My friend Neil took the small step but giant leap that changed the world and will forever be remembered as a landmark moment in human history," according to CBS News. []

Article on Rob McConnell re 2012.12.21

World wont end Friday
Dont stop saving for mortgage payments, says XZones Rob McConnell
By Gord Bowes, News staff The world wont end Friday. Probably. Just the same, Rob McConnell will be on the air for 26 hours checking around the globe for any signs of The End. McConnell, a Mountain resident who has been following the paranormal and other fringe elements of human existence for nearly two decades, will start broadcasting his marathon X-Zone show at 11 p.m. Thursday. Throughout the show he will be in touch with people around the world to get updates on whether the Mayans were right and knew this was the day the earths axis would tilt or Planet X would return. Were going to be globe hopping, asking people if the world is going on still where they are, he says. It will air on radio stations around North America. McConnell will also broadcast the show with video at xzone2012.com. Through history there have regularly been doomsday prophesies more than 200 by McConnells count. About a decade ago, the idea that the end of the 13-baktun cycle of the Mayan long count system of timekeeping Dec. 21 2012 meant that ancient Mayans knew something the rest of us didnt, that being doomsday. McConnell went to Mexico in February to find out the truth. We talked to the Mayans. They said, We didnt say that, he says. They said, What do you do on Dec. 31? I told them we have a party and turn the calendar over and start again. Everybody likes to take a prophecy and bend it to suit their own means, says McConnell. I certainly havent stopped putting money away for the mortgage payments. McConnell says over the last 20 years in the paranormal business, he has turned from someone who took most everything at face value to the biggest skeptic. I want to believe, but I want to cut through the crap, he says. Not one of these reports has come from NASA or another credible scientific source. Unless, of course, the government wants to keep it secret. Mike Nabuurs has been having a little fun with the doomsday prediction this year. For 50 Fridays, the ambassador of comedy at radio station Funny 820 has been counting down to the end the world, poking some fun along the way. I saw it as an opportunity to turn it on its head and make something good out of it, says the west Mountain resident. Nabuurs says he had complaints early on from people who misunderstood what he was doing they had probably never watched one of the videos and thought he was playing into peoples irrational fears. But overall hes hes surprised there

really hasnt been a lot of talk about this particular doomsday. He was expecting a crescendo toward Dec. 21, much like what happened in 1999 during Y2K fears. When you look up the history (of the Mayan theory) the whole thing is a little whacky, but I thought the media would run with it. His 50th video If were around, Nabuurs jokes will be unveiled Friday at funny820.com. Nabuurs says he has heard stories of people stockpiling water and canned goods, but one person near his cottage has thought even further ahead. He has stockpiled literally thousands of cases of toilet paper. Hes convinced thats going to be like gold! he says. I can picture this guy on the 22nd going What am I going to do now? Nabuurs adds there is a possibility the Mayan calendar has already ended and we are all okay because the Mayans didnt take into account our leap years. Weve screwed with the calendar so many times I dont know how anybody could figure it out. []
