Assessing early hoops leaders

LUT WILLIAMS After the usual rocky pre-New Year's non-conference schedule, black college teams get down to business with intraconference play next week. A year ago, MEAC champion Norfolk State (men) and CIAA and Div. II champion Shaw (women) nished as the No. 1 teams. This week we preview the early leaders in each conference. MEAC The Hampton Lady Pirates, the three-time defending women's tournament champs under head coach David Six, again have the best pre-New Year's record (8-4) among the Div. I programs. Hampton has posted impressive early season non-conference wins over former national power LSU (67-58) and Mississippi State (56-48), both of the SEC, Southern Miss (78-41) of Conference USA and Chicago State (87-35) of the Great West Conference. They hit a bump in the road with a three-game losing streak in late November but have rebounded with wins in four of their last ve games including two conference wins. Senior forward Keiara Avant (15.2 ppg.) and junior point guard Nicole Hamilton (11.2 ppg.) are currently leading Hampton in scoring. Hamilton is averaging an MEAC-best 5.1 assists per game while Avant leads the team and is second in the league at 9.2 rebounds per game. Senior forward JaQuayla Berry (12.2 ppg., 7.3 rpg.) and junior guard Amber Calvin (11.1 ppg., 91.3 FT%) are the keys to N. C. A&T's 6-4 start. Howard senior Saadia Doyle is pacing the league in scoring (22.3 ppg.). No men's team is above .500 entering the new year. Norfolk State at 6-8 overall, 2-0 in conference play, has the best record. Anthony Evans's Spartans are being led by Delaware transfer Malcolm Hawkins (11.8 ppg.) and junior guard Pendarvis Williams (11.6). Bethune-Cookman junior forward Adrien Coleman (18.1 ppg.) is the league scoring leader. SWAC No men's or women's SWAC team will enter the new year with an above .500 record. View have 3-6 marks. The Prairie View women, paced by Gabrielle Scott's 20 points, got a 49-42 win over MEAC leader Hampton Friday. Panther teammate Latia Williams (13.4 ppg.) leads the SWAC scoring race. Senior guard Derick Beltran (16.0 ppg.) and 6-6 freshman Malcolm Miller (13.6 ppg.) are pacing Roman Banks' Southern squad. Miller had a team-high 17 points as the Jags got a big win Saturday knocking off Texas A&M, 53-51. Jackson State senior guard Kelsey Howard leads the SWAC in scoring (17.9 ppg.) CIAA Winston-Salem State (8-2) is the only black college team ranked (23rd) in the NABC Div. II Top 25. Head coach Bobby Collins's team has losses to USC-Aiken (98-84), a team it later beat (79-70), and to Div. I UNC-Greensboro (81-65). Seven other CIAA men's teams sport winning records. Bowie State senior guard Byron Westmoreland currently leads all of Div. II in scoring at 27.2 points per game. J. C. Smith senior Trevin Parks and Elizabeth City State senior Angelo Sharpless (23.2 ppg.) are tied for third. Fayetteville State (8-1), ECSU (82) and Shaw (5-1) have the best records among the CIAA women's teams. Shaw is 13th in the USA Today Div. II national ranking. FSU senior Kristen Hanzer (20.3 ppg.) tops the CIAA and is 14th nationally in scoring. SIAC SIAC men's and women's teams have struggled in the early going with only the Benedict men (4-3) posting a winning record. Benedict has posted its record despite getting only one game from standout 7foot center Marcus Goode. Point guard Reynard Brennan (14.1 ppg.), Xavier Collier (14.1) and Tydran Beaty (13.3) are leading the Tigers in scoring. Brennan is averaging a league- and black collegebest 3.4 steals per game. Tuskegee junior Javier McKinney (18.8 ppg.) is pacing the SIAC men in scoring. Courtney English's 15.4 points (2nd) and 11.7 rebounds (1st) per game have fueled Miles' 4-4 start. Kentucky State's Sharnita Lloyd tops the scoring charts at 17.2 ppg.
