exchange. The statistics are staggering: 1 in 11 Americans now rent self-storage space, up from 1 in 17 a decade ago. The lesson is simple: we all just have too much stuff! As I watched wife Susan pack her suitcase last month in preparation for her one week trip to Israel - I got to thinking: what would it be like if we each had to put our most precious possessions in just one suitcase? Could we do it? And with the airline weight limit set at 50 pounds per bag, I know that I consider more seriously than ever before exactly what I need and what I dont need to pack each time I travel. In the same way we should all ask ourselves: what are the most important things in our lives that we would and would not be willing to give up? Not surprisingly, Jewish our moral of tradition and has something to say in this realm, for we learn throughout the ethical is the teachings that so much more important than accumulation things accumulation of mitzvot and the opportunity to make a sincere and authentic difference in other peoples lives. Consider this story a congregant recently forwarded to me: One day, a poor boy who was selling goods door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked only for a drink of water but instead she brought him a glass of milk. He
change locations several times. It is not the life you think a graduate of Oxford University Law School would be living. So in how this then, find does himself precarious Sawyer situation? The truth is that Sawyer did not fall on bad times at all. In fact, he maintains a well-paying, Sothebys full-time auction job at the prestigious house. Indeed, he had the means to live among his of friends Londons in one ritziest
consultation. When he heard the name of the town that she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctors gown he went in to see her. Dr. Kelly recognized her at once. He quickly went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day on he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and wrote something on the edge before the bill was sent to her. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words: Paid in full - with one glass of milk. Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly. In the coming months let us deeply internalize this teaching as it begs us to focus less on our own needless accumulation, while zeroing in on helping someone else who is truly in need. And in so doing, may we recognize that each one of us has the innate power to enhance our own lives by reaching out and positively influencing the life of a loved one, friend or even a stranger in a way and with a depth that we never could have imagined.
neighborhoods. But instead, Sawyer opted to live in a ditch in the woods - for one whole year. His mission: to prove to himself and others that it is possible to live a full and meaningful life without the comforts and conveniences that we have all come to take for granted in the modern era. Sawyer has no television, no refrigerator or freezer, no furniture and no roof. But what he does have is a beautiful view of the outdoors and a front seat for watching the seasons change before his very eyes. While I admit Sawyers approach seems quite extreme for most, the point here must not be overlooked. Sawyer is trying to show us that we may actually need much less than we think to live a good and fulfilling life. In his article Theres Never Too Much Stuff for Self-Storage, John Austin writes that Americans have apparently run out of room for all their belongings, even though the average house now has 2330 square feet, up

menorah on the south lawn. On a weekly basis, our Shabbat lunch program continues to grow and build community with support from Sisterhood and donors to our Shabbat funds at both campuses. In his second full year as Education Director, Rabbi Starr continues to turn around a program that had struggled the preceding few years. Families regularly tell us how much better our education program is and how much more energy we have at the religious school as a direct result of Rabbi Starr and Family Educator Megan Rappaport. This year we introduced Shabbat school on a few Saturdays. This program fills the building with children and their parents. We are pleased with the early feedback on that program and expect to see more Shabbat school programs in the coming year. We need and will be getting the word out about the great things going on in our religious school. This is where the majority of our school age children get their Jewish education, and this is where we need to be the very best we can be. Our clergy continue their commitment to excellence. This year Rabbi Krakoff has achieved two major milestonesfirst, he turned 40 years old this past Thursday, and second, this year Rabbi Krakoff marks his 13 th year, his Bar Mitzvah year, as a rabbi at Shaarey Zedek. We will be honoring this milestone on a Shabbat for he and Susan here in Southfield on June 19 th . Please join us for this important occasion. Cantor Finkelstein continues to delight our congregation with the finest musical compositions being chanted on any Bimah in this country. He continues to work with our youth choir to develop their talents and his duets with the children of the congregation are a highlight every high holiday. Additionally, his special musical programs bring out members and non-members alike in large numbers. Assistant Cantor Gutman is a steady force day in and day out in the congregation. Whether it be leading daily minyan, or chanting Torah or working with members to develop their davening skills, we appreciate all that you do here in our shul. This year our Executive Director, Lori-Blumenstein-Bott completed her first year with us. She has energized and organized our synagogue and has led a staff that is so dedicated and creative. I cant thank each one of you individually, but know that your hard work and commitment to Shaarey Zedek is appreciated by the clergy and members alike. Thank you. As most of you know by now, Rabbi Yanoff and Dava have accepted an offer to move back home to Philadelphia and he has accepted the position of rabbi at Temple Adath Israel. I will have additional comments about Rabbi Yanoff at the end of my remarks. However, I would like to use this opportunity to address the many questions that have been posed to me about our Bnai Israel center going back to the decision to close Beth Hayeled and which have increased in the wake of Rabbi Yanoffs decision. First let me remind everyone of the serious financial challenges, which Larry outlined earlier. As I said here last year, and have reminded the board at every meeting, there are no easy answers to the problems facing our congregation. First and foremost, we need to do an examination of who we are, and who and what our community needs us to be and then make the decisions necessary to get us there. Accordingly, everything we presently do must be a part of that examination and on the table subject to review. Only after we engage in that aspect of the process can we answer the questions being asked about rabbinic staffing levels, the number and nature of services and facilities we support, and the kinds of programs we offer. As Rabbi Yanoffs announcement is still fresh, we are just beginning this process. Clearly, this is a dialogue. The community that regularly attends services in Southfield has its own unique personality and traditions, as does the community that regularly attends West Bloomfield services. We know this is not a one-size fits all solution. The Board and Officers will be engaging in the coming days and weeks with members from each community, along with Rabbis Krakoff, Yanoff and Starr to develop a going forward plan that makes sense for who we are and who we want to be. This will not be a purely financially motivated decision, but also, make no mistake, financial considerations and demographic considerations will play an important role in this process. We understand that there is some uncertainty here and we want to assure you that we will be diligent, thoughtful, as we develop the plans to move forward. Our over arching goal is to build our community at Shaarey Zedek one where we can feel connected to our Judaism and to each other. I cannot stand up here and say that the toughest days are behind us. I can tell you that the leadership of this synagogue is committed to ideals and standards of the leaders that stood here in the years before us. In order to see that this synagogue continues its leadership in this community and in so many aspects of Jewish life, it is essential that we now address the decisions necessary to ensure that stable and strong future. We have a renewed focus on dues and dues management. In the coming weeks, you will see a simplified dues structure. We will have promotional dues rates for new members as well as premium categories for members who want to find a way do more for the shul. We have many donors who have graciously been paying double dues, but we have been remiss in seeking out more like minded and financially capable members. We are also going to get a better handle on dues and tuition assistance and work with the same system that Federation and the Day Schools use to determine financial aid. We have a new, and energized Endowment Board, led by past President Gregg Orley. For years our Endowment Board simply managed the assets donated twenty five years ago. Now we must reinvest in this shul and in our endowment so that the future

Todah Rabbah to Rena Weintraub, Rena Cohen and Our Dedicated Beth Heyeled Staff
With gratitude and deep appreciation we express our love to Beth Hayeled directors Rena Weintraub and Rena Cohen for all they have given us in their unyielding commitment and devotion to Shaarey Zedek. Rena Weintraubs warmth, tenderness and huge, all-embracing hugs made us feel loved, protected and taken care of each and every day while Rena Cohens kindness and deep, abiding concern for the welfare and growth of our children made us feel calm and at ease. They are a part of faculty that has, for more than six decades, provided us and our children immeasurable gifts for which we will forever be grateful. To Rena and Rena; to every teacher and every member of the Beth Hayeled team; and to all who worked tirelessly in support of our preschool and its children over these last many years: todah rabbah. Thank you so, so much.

Miracles Can and Do Happen Pre-Kindergarten If We Meet God Half-Way Now Part of Religious School
Dear Friends, Miracles can and do still happen. In July I have the blessing of traveling to Israel with teenagers from Shaarey Zedek and the Metro Detroit area as part of the Jewish Federations Teen Mission to Israel. There we will commemorate on July 20 Tisha BAv, the 9 th day of the Hebrew month of Av. It is on that date tradition teaches that both the First and Second Temples were destroyed and that numerous calamities befell the Jewish People. Yet, on this terribly sad fast day in which the Book of Rabbi Aaron L. Starr Dir. of Education & Youth Lamentations will be read, I will be in a modern, re-born State of Israel with Jerusalem as its capitol. Miracles do happen. But, just as in ancient times, God expects us to meet Him (at least) half-way in order to bring about those miracles. Israel could not have been reborn without the blood, sweat and tears of thousands of chalutzim (pioneers) who labored the land. Our homeland could not have taken root again without the sacrifice, financial and otherwise, of millions of Jews worldwideincluding and especially members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. And Israel continues to exist in no small part because of people everywhere who support her politically, financially, educationally, and through visiting. We are partners in maintaining Israel as a modern-day miracle and we have to continue to work tirelessly on her behalf. Helping to link Israel to Metro Detroit is the Jewish Federation. The Federation gives millions annually to support Israel and Israelis and even more to help create miracles right here in our own backyard. Through the generosity of those who support Federation, not only are our Shaarey Zedek teenagers (and others) able to participate in the Teen Mission, but Shaarey Zedek receives thousands of dollars in scholarship monies for a variety of programs. Moreover, Federation continues to assist those in need of housing, job-search, as well as physical and emotional support through its various agencies despite incredible reductions in its annual campaign. We at Shaarey Zedek are grateful for the continued support of the Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit and the miracles it seeks to create daily. May God grant security, peace and prosperity to the State of Israel and to all who support and are supported by the Jewish Federation, and may it go always from strength to strength. Bshalom, Rabbi Aaron L. Starr Director of Education and Youth rabbistarr@shaareyzedek.org Shalom! Would you like your child singing Jewish songs and making Jewish friends? Would you like your child to feel at home at Congregation Shaarey Zedek? If so, then now is the time to sign up your child for a Pre-Kindergarten experience at our Religious School! Your child will learn with and from our incredible early childhood educator Helayne Shaw. Most importantly, we hope that every Sunday morning your childs love of Judaism and being a Jew will grow and expand, and s/he will walk out with a big smile on his/her face. We want your child to love Shaarey Zedek and his/her experience here. For more information, please contact the Education Department at 248/357-5544.
