David Broza Live & In Concert Only At Shaarey Zedek

For thirty years now, Israeli superstar David Broza, often called the Israeli Springsteen, has been considered one of the most dynamic and vibrant performers in the singer/songwriter world. His charismatic and energetic performances have brought to worldwide audiences fusions of three different countries in which he was raised: Israel, Spain, and England, filling concert halls with his famous guitar playing, ranging from flamenco flavored rhythmic and percussion techniques, to whirlwind finger picking, to a signature rock and roll sound. Broza unites the three worlds by utilizing his ability to take on the troubadour style tradition, featuring lyrics of the worlds' greatest poets. Dont miss your opportunity to see David Broza in concert, another exciting Shaarey Zedek program for 5771!

Rabbi Joseph H. Krakoff rabbikrakoff@shaareyzedek.org

Living each day on the roller coaster of life, amidst the profound imperfections of this world, we human beings have the opportunity to discover a greater sense of who we are ... and it is in this Garden of success and failure that we truly become one with each other and with God.
t is the oldest story in the Book. Young man is so lonesome, surrounded only by animals of every kind. The Almighty feels bad and makes a fitting partner with whom he can share his life. She has faith in the wisdom of the serpent and she eats the forbidden fruit. Then, she shares it with her husband and he takes a bite even though God warned him to the contrary. Suddenly, the eyes of both man and woman are opened and the world would never be the same again! As we begin the month of October and the Hebrew month of Cheshvan - with all of the holidays now behind us - we start again at the beginning! At the outset we learn from the first book of the Torah Beresheet that Adam and Eve are both created on the sixth day and before long, they are tested by God. Perhaps they are driven by the promise of attainment or perhaps they have within them the desire to exceed what they have been given - the universal urge for more. Whatever the motivation, in the end - they fail Gods ultimate test. Our Sages teach that before Adam and Eve ate from the fruit of the tree, only holy forces were at work within the human being. Prior to this sin of the stomach, man and woman were completely straight and pure and all of their work was holy and clean. In essence then, by falling prey to the serpents temptation, the first couple single-handedly brought punishment, pain, and ultimately failure into the world. But what path to accomplishment is not strewn with impediments in the road? The Torah teaches that no one can truly understand Torah unless they have failed at something. It is also taught that only the person who knows failure will truly understand success. Perhaps failure is not so bad then! For unless we take risks and allow for the chance to fail, we cannot truly grow and propel ourselves forward. Of course, failure is not pleasant but it is however necessary! The famous sage, Rabbi Yochanan teaches: the eye has a white and a dark part, but we can see only through the dark part. This is to remind us that only through darkness or failure do we begin to see. From darkness comes insight. And given time and faith, insight can bring triumph and ultimate success. Rabbi Harold Kushner celebrates the failure of the first couple in the Garden of Eden proclaiming that Eve is actually the heroine because she takes a risk, sees a challenge, and as such, makes possible the maturation of human life as we know it. Rabbi Kushner offers a thought-provoking alternative ending to the Genesis story as follows: So the woman saw that the tree was good to eat and a delight to the eye, and the serpent said to her, Eat of it, for when you eat of it, you will be as wise as God. But the woman said, No, God has commanded us not to eat of it, and I will not disobey God. So God called to the man and the woman and said to them, Because you have hearkened to My word and not disobeyed My commandment, I shall reward you greatly. To the man, He said, You will never have to work again. Instead you will spend all your days in idle contentment, with food growing all around you. To the woman, God said, You will bear children without pain and you will raise them without pain. They will need nothing from you. Furthermore, children will not cry when their parents die, and parents will not cry when their children die. To both Adam and Eve the Almighty said, For the rest of your lives, you will have full bellies and contented smiles. You will never shed a tear and you will never laugh. You will never long for something you do not have and you will never receive something you have always wanted. And the man and the woman grew old together in the Garden, eating daily from the Tree of Life and having many children. And the grass grew high around the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil until it disappeared from view, for there was no one to tend it. What can be made of this alternative version? It presents a vision of what life might have been like if Adam and Eve did not fail the test. Which life would you prefer? The life of utopian perfection or the current one which features much struggle simultaneous with the potential for wonderful growth?! Incidentally, when someone remarked to Thomas Edison that his experiments had failed more than 90 times before he finally invented the light bulb, Edison countered that those were not failures. He had actually learned more than 90 new ways how not to make a light bulb. As a result of their disobeying God, Adam and Eve must leave the Garden of Eden. They must leave Gods place precisely at the moment when they possess the knowledge of good and evil. While this action is so often understood as a punishment, I believe that we should praise Gods brilliance. God drove the human beings out of the Garden to live in the imperfect world and to create success out of their failure. And so it is with us. We too must learn to embrace our failures and use them as a means for spiritual and emotional growth. Living each day on the roller coaster of life, amidst the profound imperfections of this world, we human beings have the opportunity to discover a greater sense of who we are. Our life journey then is from the innocence of the Garden of Eden (childhood) to the Garden of our fallibility and thus our maturity (adulthood). And it is in this Garden of success and failure that we truly become one with each other and with God. This month - as we begin again - may each of us come to recognize our common humanity by more readily embracing our failures and imperfections at every turn. Chodesh Tov!

A Touch of Technology to Revitalize and Update Shaarey Zedeks Library

Over the summer, several members of the Shaarey Zedek community embarked on a project of refreshing the library. The goal was to make the library user-friendly and relevant for a new generation of users. With this in mind, we created a special childrens section, technology center and are showcasing new books for adults provided by the Jewish Book Club. The new childrens section is replete with beautiful Jewish books for our youth, some of which were provided by the PJ Library. In this section we will host young childrens programming, provide opportunities for Religious School storytime and also invite you to drop in anytime with your children or grandchildren to read a story! As a fortunate recipient of a grant from the Hermelin-Davidson Center for Congregational Excellence, we were enabled to create a technology center with six computer stations and a SMART Board (interactive whiteboard). These technologies are available primarily for the use of Religious School teachers and students, but also for all members to engage in research and learning. We hope that you will take advantage of our newly refreshed library! This task could not have been accomplished without the help of Cheryl Litt, a stellar librarian who helped us to see this vision through. Todah rabbah!

CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK TO BE FEATURED IN FILM AT NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN JEWISH HISTORY
Congregation Shaarey Zedek will be one of 13 synagogues featured in films exploring the post-World War II role of synagogues in the United States being created for the new National Museum of American Jewish History, opening in Philadelphia in November 2010. Located on the second floor of the Museums core exhibition covering 1945 to the present, the films will offer virtual tours of synagogues built following World War II in an effort to immerse visitors in inspirational and diverse examples of 20th century synagogue architecture. We chose Congregation Shaarey Zedek because it represents a key example of post-World War II architecture, said Dr. Josh Perelman, the Museums historian and deputy director of programming. These films aim to demonstrate the lively expansion of American Judaism in the latter half of the twentieth century, continued Perelman. In the fall, filmmakers from Local Projects, the Museums interactive media partner, traveled from New York City to Shaarey Zedek for a full-day shoot of the synagogues architectural features cited in preliminary interviews with members of the synagogue and its staff. These interviews also laid the groundwork for full-length oral histories recorded on site with Rabbi Joseph Krakoff, congregation President Brian Hermelin and congregation members Mandell Bill Berman and Alan Schwartz. The opportunity to collect these voices as snapshots of Jewish American life for the museum has been an incredible experience for our team of filmmakers, said Jake Barton, the principal of Local Projects. The interviews have revealed incredibly warm and candid expressions of congregants connection, not only to Judaism and their synagogue, but to their family and in some instances their larger Jewish identity. We thank Shaarey Zedek for opening their doors to us and allowing our crew to document their community.

What an incredible journey its been! Shaarey Zedeks Vegetable garden was first planted on Sunday, May 16 th by a hundred students, their parents and other synagogue members with the support of many donors. Over the past five months, the garden has flourished with the help of all of our wonderful volunteers. We are grateful to the children, teens, families, adults and Yad Ezra volunteers who made time in their busy lives to give back to our community, fulfilling the mitzvah of feeding the hungry. In total the garden produced 500 lbs of fresh vegetables, which were delivered on a weekly basis to Yad Ezras clients. Yasher Koach to all of the participants, to our lead consultant, Rebecca Starr, and todah rabbah to our sponsors.

EDUCATION & YOUTH

CONGREGATION SHAAREY ZEDEK . WWW.SHAAREYZEDEK.ORG

Rabbi Aaron L. Starr Director of Education & Youth rabbistarr@shaareyzedek.org

Now that we feel the love, what comes next? ... As we head into our next 150 years, who is Congregation Shaarey Zedek? What are we?

e often laugh with the children that rabbis and educators do nothing over the summer but wait for them to come back. The truth is that all we did this summer was try to come up with a new motto for the Department of Education and Youth. Okay, okay not the whole summer (just most of it). This slogan is, I believe, very important. After all, it reflects our vision for Jewish youth, their families and what we as a community stand for. More importantly, the slogan has to look good on the back of t-shirts and on coffee mugs. When I came on board two years ago, I came up with Feel the love. It truly set the tone for the last two years of our programming and experiences. Now that people feel the love, what comes next? Congregation Shaarey Zedek: Faithfully. Ill admit it, this was my idea. I wanted to really bring home to our children the idea of community and family for which Shaarey Zedek stands. Especially since this is Shaarey Zedeks 150 th anniversary year, I thought it was very fitting to reflect our families commitment to this shul for the last century and a half and that such a commitment would continue, faithfully, for the next 150 years. Most importantly, however, was that it is a great song from the band Journey and I thought it could serve as a cute double message. Ya, as soon as someone mentioned Journey it got nixed. Who knew people didnt like Journey so much?! Congregation Shaarey Zedek: Shabbat Happens. Clever, right? Well, except for those who know the original phrase. But this expression does reflect our reinvigorated commitment to the Sabbath. As Ahad HaAm wrote, More than the Jewish people have kept Shabbat, Shabbat has kept the Jewish people. With new and exciting youth service opportunities, including Tot Shabbat, Youth and Family Services, Torah Talk, minyanim in both the chapel and sanctuary, and more, Congregation Shaarey Zedek is the place to be on Shabbat mornings. Come join

us and check it out. Congregation Shaarey Zedek: Livin in the House of the Lord. Well, it does express our belief in God but no, I nixed that one. Congregation Shaarey Zedek: Wicked Awesome. Need I say more? Didnt make the cut. As we head into our next 150 years, who is Congregation Shaarey Zedek? What are we? How do we represent all our ideals: God, Torah, Israel, community, Conservative Judaism, family, Shabbat, holidays, and more into a concise phrase (that can, frankly, fit onto the back of a t-shirt)? I look forward to hearing YOUR ideas. Please email me any thoughts you might have: rabbistarr@shaareyzedek.org. Together may we love CSZ faithfully: a place where Shabbat Happens and where we are Livin in the House of the Lord. After all, Shaarey Zedek is, truly, wicked awesome.

We hope that you will learn with us, laugh with us, sing with us and share with us. Be a part of the Shaarey Zedek community!

t is hard to believe that its October! The summer seems distant now and school is in full swing. Even though its beginning to feel chilly, I can still feel the heat of the young families who packed our programs this summer. We began in May with the Summer Shabbat Dinner Club, bringing in families with children in grade school to enjoy an evening together and to learn the Friday night table rituals. The fun continued in June, July and August with a parent-baby music class, La La Loie, which was filled to capacity. We visited the animals at the zoo, came together for Jewish stories and activities with PJ Power Hour, and celebrated Shabbat in parks around the community and in our synagogue! The fun was non-stop! In the midst of all of this, we have planned an even more fabulous, fun, and most importantly, free array of opportunities for our families this fall! We invite you to join us Shabbat mornings for Tot Shabbat and Thursday mornings for Jumpin & Jivin, our new musical open gym. PJ Power Hour will be held both at home and on the road at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield during the Book Fair. Dont forget to bring your friends to these Family-Friendly and Free experiences! All of this information and more can be found in your new 2010 High Holy Day Season Young Family Programming Guide. To request a copy, be sure to call or email. On Sunday, October 31 st , our community of Shaarey Zedek families with children in kindergarten through seventh grade will gather for Project Tikkun Olam. At this program, families will have the opportunity to give back, volunteering at various organizations around the community. Age-appropriate activities will be available for all. We hope that you will join us for this rewarding experience. Last years participants raved about learning the Jewish value of

caring for animals while petting a 300 pound snake! Stay tuned for this years excitement! In 2 nd Grade, parents and children will learn together at the Havdalah Happenin workshop where theyll create beautiful hand-made Havdalah sets and embark on a journey through the sky in a portable planetarium. The following Saturday evening, well join together again to say goodbye to Shabbat and put into practice our new skills! As you can see we have a very exciting year planned. We hope that you will learn with us, laugh with us, sing with us and share with us. Be a part of the Shaarey Zedek community.
