Blood Spatter Inquiry Lab Report Requirements

1. Title (5 points)-Write a sentence that relates the independent (IV) and dependent
(DV) variables that were investigated. The title must be stated as follows: The effect of the independent variable (IV) on the dependent variable (DV). 2. Introduction (10 points)- Describe the rationale, purpose and hypothesis for the investigation. Use these questions to guide your writing of the introduction: What did you hope to learn? (Purpose) What did you think would happen? (Hypothesis) 3. Experimental Design Diagram (10 points)-A template to organize the experimental process: TITLE: The effect of the ______ (IV)_____________ on the _______(DV)_____. HYPOTHESIS: If the __________(IV)_______ (describe how it will be changed), Then the _________(DV)______ will ____(describe the effect)___. Independent Variable (IV)Variable that is changed: Levels of the IV: Number of Trials for each level: Dependent variable (DV)-Variable that is measured:________________________ Constants (factors that are kept the same to minimize error): _________________

4. Materials (5 points)-Comprehensive list of equipment/supplies to conduct the

experiment.

5. Procedure (10 points)-List the steps followed to complete the investigation. Check
for accuracy, completeness, and precision. 6. Data Table (10 points)-A table containing vertical columns for the independent variable (IV) and dependent variable (DV) and derived quantity. Order the values of the IV. Subdivide the column for the DV to reflect the number of trials. Compute the average value for all trials. Record values and units of measurement. 7. Graph (15 points)-A pictorial representation of the data used to show trends, patterns and relationships. Underline the title: stating the relationship between the IV and DV. X (IV) and Y (DV) axes clearly labeled with appropriate categories. Graph ONLY the average from the trials performed. Determine the appropriate scale and subdivide axes. Labeled units of measurement (ie: C, g, mL, cm, sec., etc.) Correct representation of data (ie: bar, line, dot graph) 8. Conclusion (15 points)-Describe the purpose, major findings, an explanation for the findings and recommendations for further study. Cite data from each individual trial in your conclusion paragraph. Answer the following 6 questions in the conclusion: 1) What was the purpose of the experiment? 2) What were the major findings? 3) Was the hypothesis supported by the data? 4) How did your findings compare with other researchers or with information found in the textbook? 5) What possible explanation can you offer for the findings? 6) What recommendations do you have for further study and for improving the experiment? 9. Applications (5 points)-Explain how the findings from the experiment can be used in real life. 10. Steps of Scientific Method (5 points)-Clearly headed, worded correctly and in order.

11. Photos of experimental trials (10 points)-Label and explain photos.

Your group (2 or 3 STUDENTS) will design and conduct an inquiry experiment on blood spatter. Your group will be responsible for making your own fake blood. Several recipes can be found on the internet. A laboratory report POWERPOINT or PREZI will be presented and turned in for your group assessment. YOU MUST INCLUDE PHOTOS OF EACH OF THE TRIALS IN THE PRESENTATION. EXPERIMENTS MUST BE SCHOOL APPROPRIATE. NO REAL WEAPONS MAY BE USED. NO REAL BLOOD-ANIMAL OR HUMAN WILL BE PERMITTED! Write the group members names responsible for typing portions of the report on the lines: 1. Title, Introduction, Materials and Procedure (30 points)=___________ 2. Data Table & Graph (25 points)=___________ 3. Experimental Design Diagram, Conclusion (citing data) and Applications (30 points)=___________ 4. Photos & correct scientific method order (15 points)=___________ Ideas for Blood Spatter Investigation: Conduct spatter experiments on different materials, fabrics, surfaces (carpet, tile, screen, foam, concrete, etc.). Use different instruments to cast-off blood spatter (plastic knifes, sponges, toothbrushes, paintbrushes, sticks, etc). Projectile blood- Simulate different gun shots by hitting a sponge with different objects or varying the force to create forward and backward spatter. Multiple droplets on different materials or surfaces. String method-triangulation measurements of various blood spatter. Simulate droplets left as blood trails (walking at different paces on varying surfaces, materials, or objects). Use squirt bottles, streams, or spray bottles to simulate arterial spatter. High velocity, medium velocity and low velocity of expired blood. Transfer or swipe patterns simulating different objects transferring blood. Void patterns of different objects their effect on blood spatter. Experiment with different kinds of fake blood-which recipes give the most realistic results? Other ideas approved by your instructor prior to conducting the experiments. Detailed presentation requirements are located on the opposite side of this paper. You will be given class time on Thursday-1/10 & Friday- 1/11 to conduct your experiments and record your data. Monday-1/14 and Tuesday-1/15 will be in the computer lab creating the PowerPoint or Prezi report. Projects will be DUE and presented in class on Wednesday, 1/16/13=100 POINTS!
