(ii) Determine an expression for the natural frequency of the system shown in Fig. Q1(b) for small amplitudes of vibration. Assume that the mass of the rod is negligible. If m, k1, k2 and (a + b) are all fixed, specify the value of the dimension a at which the system is no longer stable (or at which the system will not vibrate). m b k1 k2

QUESTION 02 Fig. Q2 shows a uniform beam of length 2a and mass m, supported horizontally by two equal springs, each of stiffness k , at points distant a1 and a2 from the middle. Derive the frequency equation giving two frequencies for small oscillations in the vertical plane. Show that the two frequencies are equal, if a = 3a1 = 3a 2 . 2a a1 G k k a2

QUESTION 03 Fig. Q3 shows a damped simple oscillator consisting of a mass m, spring of stiffness k and a damper of damping constant b. The mass is subjected to a linear displacement x. Answer the following questions. (i) Draw a free body diagram of the oscillator and determine the equations of motion. (ii) If m = 1 kg and k = 100 N/m, derive expressions for the free response of the system for the following three cases. (a) b = 40 Ns/m (b) b = 20 Ns/m (c) b = 16 Ns/m

(i) Solution using Laplace Transforms (ii) Direct solution (in the time domain) Show the following components of the total response separately. (a) Homogeneous solution and particular integral. (b) Free response and forced response. (c) Initial condition response and zero-initial condition response. .

QUESTION 05 A heavy machine, weighing 3000 N, is supported on a resilient foundation. The static deflection of the foundation due to the weight of the machine is found to be 75 mm. It is observed that the machine vibrates with an amplitude of 10 mm when the base of the foundation is subjected to harmonic oscillations at the undamped natural frequency of the system with an amplitude of 2.5 mm. Determine the following. (i) (ii) (iii) Damping constant of the foundation Dynamic force amplitude on the base Amplitude of the displacement of the machine relative to the base.
