Final FRCR Examination Part A: abstracted information

Published December 2007/ Updated September 2011; Accessed 24 April 2012 For updated and detailed information, please refer to: www.rcr.ac.uk

Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) may be obtained by examination after two and a half years of full-time clinical radiology training. Candidates are not permitted to attempt both Part A and Part B at the same sitting and must have passed the First FRCR Examination prior to entering the Final FRCR Part A Examination. The examination is divided into six modules: Module 1: Cardiothoracic and Vascular Module 2: Musculoskeletal and Trauma Module 3: Gastro-intestinal (including liver, biliary, pancreas and spleen) Module 4: Genito-urinary, Adrenal, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Breast Module 5: Paediatrics Module 6: Central Nervous and Head & Neck (including spine, eyes, ENT, salivary glands and dental)

Some diseases, due to their nature or radiological manifestations, cannot be categorised into a single module. Candidates should expect a few multiple choice questions relating to these sorts of conditions to contain parts referring to other modules. Where appropriate, questions on similar topics may appear in more than one module. The clinical content of the syllabus will remain unchanged, although the physics component will be discontinued. Each module is examined by a separate single best answer (SBA) question paper covering all imaging modalities and including some anatomy and techniques. The six modules are held over three consecutive days twice a year, normally in March and September. There is no limit on the number of modules that may be attempted at a single sitting, nor on the number of attempts that a candidate may make at the examination overall. There is no requirement to resit a module once it has been passed. Candidates need to pass all six modules in order to be deemed to have achieved overall success in the Final FRCR Part A Examination.

Applicants need to hold a formal clinical radiology training post, in which they are actively receiving clinical radiology training, (or have held such as post in the past) and to have passed the First FRCR Examination in order to enter the Final FRCR Part 2A Examination. There is no requirement to have completed a specific duration of training. There is no requirement to provide confirmation that formal training or lecture course attendance covering the examination syllabus for the modules to be entered has been undertaken. Those who enter the examination on the basis of UK training require the signature of the head of their training scheme on their application form to confirm that the number of modules to be entered is appropriate. The examination will continue to comprise six modules. Each of the six modules will be examined by a single paper of 75 questions, which will be of two hours in duration. Each module is examined by MCQs only. The duration of each modules question paper and the number of MCQs each is shown below. The examination will continue to be held twice a year, usually in March and September. At each of the two sittings, the modules will be scheduled over three consecutive days (usually Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday), with one module during each morning and afternoon session.

Day 1

10.00 am 12.00 pm Module 1: Cardiothoracic and Vascular Module 3: Gastro-intestinal

2.00 pm 4.00 pm Module 2: Musculoskeletal and Trauma Module 4: Genito-urinary, Adrenal, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Breast Module 6: Central Nervous and Head & Neck

Day 2

Day 3

Module 5: Paediatrics

Candidates are able to sit the examination at five UK venues (Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, London and Manchester) and two non-UK venues (Hong Kong and Singapore).

Singapore modular (FRCR 2A) teaching programme Organisation

1. This programme is organised under the auspices of the Singapore Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) for Diagnostic Radiology (DR). 2. This programme consists of 6 clinical modules, and is aimed at preparing radiological trainees for the final FRCR examination- part A. 3. The module series runs as a cycle over one calender year, starting from May 2012 and ending by April 2013. 4. The 2012- 2013 programme will be targeted at radiological trainees who entered training in 2011, and who have passed or sat the FRCR part 1 examinations. 5. Each of the six module leaders will recruit recognised expert radiologists in each field to be teachers for their modules. As a general guide, all teachers should be accredited radiologists of associate consultant level or above, or equivalent nonradiological experts. These teachers will first be endorsed by this committee, and then by the STC (DR). 6. The module leaders devise the contents of their own modular programme and the assigned teachers. Each module programme will be endorsed by this committee, followed by endorsement by STC (DR). 7. Each module programme should cover the respective subspecialty topics comprehensively. Each module will consist of didactic teaching, and time for discussion between teachers and trainees. 8. In order to derive maximum benefit, trainees are encouraged to read up on topics before each teaching session. 9. The sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons from 2.00pm to 5.30pm. The sessions should be fully utilised, i.e. last the full 3.5 hours, and at least 2 different topics should be taught. Time should be allocated for a short break between lectures, and discussion. Trainees should be punctual. 10. The 2012 - 2013 cohort representative will be responsible for communication and coordination between the teaching programme committee and the trainees. He or she will also be responsible for regularly submitting completed programme attendance sheets to the RAC via the College of Radiologists secretariat, and also assist the programme committee when required. Feedback from trainees is important to ensure that the module programmes are relevant and appropriate. The cohort representative, with the assistance of the College secretariat, will also liaise with the teachers and inform all trainees of each weeks teaching venue after confirmation with the teachers.
