Presentation Title: ANNUAL INSURANCE DISCUSSION FORUM 2009

Description of Presentation:
The focus of this discussion is on issues related to insurance. This would encompass enabling legislation
in unlicensed or licensed states, contracting with insurance companies, navigating reimbursement and fee
schedules and importance of proper documentation and proper CPT and ICD- 9 coding. At the end of the
presentation we will review cases, including the chart notes and coding as an example for attendees.

Learning Objectives
• Understanding issues related to insurance reimbursement for naturopathic medical care, and
issues related to interacting with the insurers (contracting, fee schedules, coding issues and
documentation requirements).
• Navigating issues related to insurance, provider networks, fee schedules, coding, documentation,
regulatory, legal issues.
• Understanding the insurance system and having the skill set necessary to successfully navigate
this aspect of the healthcare system and make informed choices.
• Learning to code properly and be given the information necessary to obtain CPT and ICD-9
books.

Eva Miller, ND received her Naturopathic Doctorate in 2005 from Bastyr University in Kenmore
Washington. In May of 2008 she completed a two and a half year primary care residency at
Seattle Healing Arts Center under the supervision of W. Bruce Milliman, ND. She serves on the
Board of Directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians and is the current
chair for their Governmental Affairs Committee. In addition, she represents with W. Bruce
Milliman, ND the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians at the tri- annual American
Medical Association/Current Procedural Terminology/Health Care Practitioners Advisory
Committee. She is currently in full time practice as a primary care Physician at Seattle Healing
Arts Center.

Bio/short/WBM

W. Bruce Milliman is a graduate of Bastyr University and the University of Washington. He was
president of the Washington of Naturopathic Physicians (WANP) & Clinical Director at Bastyr
University and has been AANP ‘Physician of the Year’ (1996). He has worked extensively to
gaining access for patients and practitioners to health insurance reimbursement for naturopathic
care. He represents the WANP on Washington State’s health care advisory committee; he
represents the AANP on the federal medical coding advisory committee. He is a full time
primary care provider at Seattle Healing Arts where he has practiced and lived for 26 years.

Lorilee Schoenbeck N.D. is president of the Vermont Association of Naturopathic Physicians, AANP
member, adjunct professor at Johnson State College and has a thriving naturopathic medical practice in a
Planned Parenthood-owned gynecology clinic. She was involved in licensing legislation for N.D.s in
Vermont in 1996 and instrumental in passing legislation guaranteeing insurance coverage for N.D.s in
2007. An experienced and popular presenter to both medical and general audiences, she effectively
brings the worlds of natural and conventional medicine together. She is committed to preserving the
integrity of naturopathy while making its wisdom available to mainstream patients and health delivery
systems. Dr. Schoenbeck lives in Burlington, VT, where she also enjoys swing dancing, yoga and the
great outdoors. Her book, Menopause: Bridging the Gap Between Natural and Conventional Medicine, is
a trusted guide to thousands of women.
