Master Thesis Abstract

Vietnam took a decade to succeed in ghting high ination since transforming its command economy toward a more market-oriented one in the late 1980s. In recent years, the ination has risen again. This paper aims at investigating the main causes of high ination by taking the approach of the extended P-star model. Using the quarterly data for the period 1995Q22007Q2, I found that the foreign price gap (the deviation between the domestic prices and the foreign determined equilibrium prices) exhibits a higher explanatory power than the domestic price gap (the deviation between the actual prices and the long-run equilibrium prices). The nding suggests that management of exchange rate regime is the keystone for curbing ination.
