Sun roof testing information for the Beetle is not available. See WIRING DIAGRAMS to aid in testing and diagnosis.

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

The power sun roof is operable when ignition is on. On vehicles with power door locks or power windows, power sun roof can also be closed by inserting key in driver's door lock and holding key in the locked position (comfort closing). If power sun roof system fails, sun roof can be operated manually by removing interior light, removing cable drive cover, and rotating drive with crank.
ADJUSTMENTS CABLE DRIVE

Golf, GTI & Jetta If cable drive is replaced, it must be installed in "O" (closed) position. To do so, ensure Sun Roof Control Module (SRCM) is connected. SRCM is located behind cover in center of interior roof, near sun roof controls. Operate sun roof switch and count the number of turns of the drive pinion. See Fig. 1. The "O" position is between "switch off" point's "A" (2 turns counterclockwise) and "B" (8 1/4 turns clockwise).

Fig. 1:

Cable Drive Adjustment (Golf, GTI & Jetta)

Passat With sun roof motor removed but still connected electrically, select closed roof with automatic rotary switch. Sun roof motor is

located behind cover in center of interior roof, near sun roof controls. Sun roof motor will run to "O" (closed) position and switch off. Install motor in "O" position with sun roof closed.
PARALLEL ALIGNMENT

Golf, GTI & Jetta 1) Obtain radio activation code from vehicle owner. Disconnect negative battery cable. Ensure glass panel is closed. Push back sliding headliner and trim frame. See Fig. 4. 2) Remove interior light. Remove sun roof cable drive cover. Remove cable drive. Lower pinion drive until drive pinion no longer meshes with cables. Ensure locking levers are engaged in guide rails. 3) Move rear guide pins from front to rear, ONLY as far as marks or notches. See Fig. 2. Install cable drive using new selflocking screws. Install cable drive cover and interior light. Reconnect negative battery cable.

Fig. 2:

Checking Parallel Alignment (Golf, GTI & Jetta)

Passat 1) Tilt sun roof open. Fully push back sliding headliner. Unclip lower trim, slide forward out of elongated holes. Unclip upper trim and remove in rearward direction. See Fig. 3. Close sun roof. 2) Move guide pins from front to rear, ONLY as far as marks or notches. See Fig. 4. Locating hooks must be in guide rails. Install sun roof motor in "O" position. Check "O" position. See CABLE DRIVE.

SUN ROOF HEIGHT

Golf, GTI & Jetta 1) Ensure parallel alignment is correct. See PARALLEL ALIGNMENT. Tilt glass panel open. Push back sun roof headliner. Release trim frame and push to rear. Close glass panel. 2) Loosen all 4 adjustment screws on glass panel. Adjust sun roof panel front height by positioning .039" (1 mm) lower than roof. Adjust sun roof panel rear height by positioning .039" (1 mm) higher than roof. See Fig. 5. Tighten adjustment screws to 53 INCH lbs. (6 N. m). Passat 1) Ensure "O" position is okay. See CABLE DRIVE. Tilt sun roof open. Fully push back sliding headliner. Unclip lower trim and slide forward, out of elongated holes. Unclip upper trim and remove in rearward direction. See Fig. 3. Close sun roof. 2) Loosen all glass panel adjustment screws. Adjust sun roof panel front height by positioning .039" (1 mm) lower than roof. Adjust sun roof panel rear height by positioning .039" (1 mm) higher than roof. See Fig. 5. Tighten adjustment screws to 35-44 INCH lbs. (4-5 N. m).

MAINTENANCE DRAIN TUBES

Golf, GTI & Jetta Fabricate a cleaning probe from a used 7 1/2 foot speedometer cable core. Front drain tubes are routed through "A" pillars and discharge above front door hinge. Clean front drain tubes through sun roof opening. Rear drain tubes are routed through "C" pillars and discharge behind rear wheel housing. Clean rear drain tubes from lower end of hose. Passat Fabricate a cleaning probe from a used 7 1/2 foot speedometer cable core. Front drain tubes are routed through "A" pillars and discharge between front door and "A" pillar. Clean front drain tubes through sun roof opening. Rear drain tubes are routed through "C" pillars. On sedan, rear drain tubes discharge behind rear wheel housing, behind rear bumper covering. On station wagon, rear drain tubes discharge behind rear wheel housing covering. Wheel housing must

be removed to facilitate cleaning. On all models, clean rear drain tubes from lower end of hose.

NOTE:

Refer to WIRING DIAGRAMS for terminal identification.

SUN ROOF SYSTEM INOPERATIVE

Golf, GTI & Jetta 1) Ensure sun roof is mechanically okay. Verify fuse S16 and fuse S21 are okay. Ensure ignition and all electrical accessories are off. Disconnect Sun Roof Control Module (SRCM) 6-pin connector. SRCM is located behind cover in center of interior roof, near sun roof controls. 2) Using Test Kit (VW 1594), connect positive voltmeter lead to SRCM 6-pin connector terminal No. 5. See WIRING DIAGRAMS. Connect negative voltmeter lead to terminal No. 6. If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present, repair open circuit. 3) Disconnect sun roof switch 4-pin connector. Connect positive voltmeter lead to sun roof switch 4-pin connector terminal No. 3. Connect negative voltmeter lead to SRCM 6-pin connector terminal No. 6. Turn ignition on. If voltage is present, go to next step. If voltage is not present at switch, repair open circuit. 4) Turn ignition off. Check continuity between sun roof switch 4-pin connector terminal No. 1 and SRCM 6-pin connector terminal No. 2. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit. 5) Ensure ignition is off. Check continuity between sun roof switch 4-pin connector terminal No. 2 and SRCM 6-pin connector terminal No. 1. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit. 6) Ensure ignition is off. Check continuity between sun roof switch 4-pin wiring harness connector terminal No. 4 and SRCM 4-pin connector terminal No. 3. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open circuit. 7) Connect sun roof switch 4-pin connector. Connect negative voltmeter lead to SRCM 6-pin connector terminal No. 6 (ground). Turn ignition on. If voltage is as specified in appropriate SUN ROOF SWITCH TESTING table, go to next step (replace sun roof control module on Passat). If voltage is not as specified, replace sun roof switch.
