Formal Letters

Style in formal letters: Formal register ( complex sentences, non-colloquial English, frequent use of the passive, advanced vocabulary, no abbreviated forms); Formal greetings and endings; Reason for writing ( in the first paragraph ); Appropriate use of linking devices; Rephrasing of language from input material; Desired outcome.

Useful language: Reason for writing:

Paragraph plan: a) Paragraph 1: an appropriate greeting ( Dear Ms Crawley ; Dear Sir/Madam; clearly states the reason for writing.

b) Main body: development of the subject; deals with the additional objective(s) of the letter if necessary.

c) Conclusion : summarises the subject; closing remarks; an appropriate ending ( Yours faithfully/sincerely + Full name ; Best Wishes + First name).

!!!!! If you started your letter with a name ( Dear Mr. Smith ) , you end with Yours sincerely; If you didnt know the name ( Dear Sir/Madam ) , you end with Yours faithfully .
