MUS 123 World Music RESEARH PAPER GUIDELINES 15%--RESEARCH PAPER3-4 page report on research conducted in an area of world

music. Choose a topic of interest to you, that has not been covered in class (though it may relate to cultures or topics that we have covered). Keep it manageable, i.e. the level of analysis should not be too big. For example, a single genre, instrument, artist, historical period, behavior, concept, social issue, etc., is more manageable in a 3-4 page paper, than the study of an entire country, region, or historical tradition. I prefer in-depth focused research and analysis to general/superficial discussion. Write up a short proposal (one paragraph) outlining your proposed topic. This will be due two weeks before the papers due date----APRIL 14TH (Final paper is due April 28th). Additional Guidelines 1) Do not use the textbook as a primary source. 2) Reports should include bibliography citing at least 3 sources (as a 4 th or 5th page). Possible resources include: References Garland Encyclopedias of World Music New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians Rough Guide: World Music Video

e f g Ethnomusicology, Ethnomusicology Forum, Asian Music, etc. 3) While Wikipedia may be a valid starting point for framing your strategy and finding other sources, do not use it as a primary source.

4) I can check out audio-visual materials from the library for you by request. 5) While the general topic areas will vary, some potential issues to consider for research may include:
