The Christmas Party for the Nicolet AARP Chapter 1191 was well attended by 61 members who enjoyed an evening of fun and fellowship at Waubee Lodge in Lakewood. Members brought gifts of food to be given to the Christian Food Pantry in Townsend. The dinner with a main course of prime rib and chicken was excellent. With a festive atmosphere and music provided by Robert Mengel the AARP members enjoyed the singing of Christmas carols and some dancing. Several new officers and board members were officially sworn in to their new positions. Karen Prueter took over the position of President for the Nicolet AARP Chapter 1191 and Jim Kingsbury is the new Vice President. Mike Grotefend, a representative from AARP Wisconsin, swore in the new board members. Mr. Grotefend read a letter from the AARP National Office which recognized the Nicolet AARP Group for forty years as an active AARP group providing service to its members and the community. Mike complemented the membership stating that the activities and member involvement is impressive, and that the number of people on the Board is larger then most groups total membership. All persons 50 and over are invited to join the local AARP Chapter. AARP meetings are social, entertaining, and informative. Meetings are held at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church on the fourth Tuesday of each month starting at 1:30 PM. Contact Joyce West, Membership Chairman, at 715-276-9409.

One of the questions that have been heard is Why would anyone do this? Several of the Christmas trees were decorated by volunteer organizations, families and friends who live in the areas in and surrounding Riverview. No one has come forward with any tips or information regarding who it was either one or more persons who was involved in the destruction of the trees. For some of those who decorated a tree it has become a first time event or one that they have been doing since the town offered to the public to bring holiday cheer to passers by. If you know who did this or have some information, please contact the Town of Riverview.

Did you know that vitamins contain synthetic vitamin powders, even if listed as natural. The pharmaceutical companies make most of these vitamin powders. So, what's the difference between natural and synthetic? Natural brands don't contain artificial chemical colors (a good thing). Synthetic vitamins work pretty good. A vitamin made in a lab can be labeled natural. Almost all brands need a filler to hold the pill together. Magnesium stearate, stearic acid, sodium citrate, dicalcium phosphate, cellulose and silica are among the harmless, standard fillers. The real question is, does the vitamin prevent and cure disease. I think vitamins fill a need. We can't possibly get ALL of our vitamins from the foods we eat. Americans typically eat only one-third of the recommended daily intake (three servings instead of nine) of fruits and vegetables. Fresh fruits and veggies lose some of their vitamins as soon as they are picked, during shipping, and sit on the store shelves. Canned veggies lose their nutrients during the preservation process, except tomatoes & pumpkin. Frozen fruits & veggies actually contain more vitamins because they are processed at their peak ripeness & flash-frozen, whichs locks in the nutrients. Choose packages marked with a USDA "U.S. Fancy" shield, which designates produce of the best size, shape and color. Steam your veggies to minimize loss of water-soluble vitamins. Eat ripe fruits & veggies that are in-season. Take your vitamins daily. Next month: vitamins to supplement your diet.
The Pine Needle Quilters met Nov. 12, with 31 members and 3 guest. We were reminded of the Christmas Party Dec. 3, at Waters Edge on Andersen Lake. An ornament exchange will be done, and also a gift exchange. If you bring a gift, you will receive one in exchange. The president's challenge is a children's stocking complete with a stuffed animal. These will go to our local hospitals, to be given to children who are either in the hospital during the holidays/ or brought to the emergency room. Also bring a canned or non-perishable item. These will be donated to the food pantry in Townsend. After a short business meeting, there were six short demo's for possible Christmas gifts. Demo's were given by Laurie Schoenebeck, Diana Napier, Joan Hansen, Sandi Liebl, Sheila Hixon, and Deanna Tachick.

The Baldwin company is no longer in business and repair parts are no longer available. Quotations were requested from three organ suppliers and four sound system suppliers. Our committee went to several different churches to listen to each individual organ and associated sound system. After bid analysis and evaluation, we contracted for a sound system and an Allen organ with Brookfield Organ and Piano Co. in December 2011. All equipment is American made. The sound system installation began in mid-February 2012, with organ installation completed by March 2012. In November, 2011, we started our Organ Fundraising Drive to pay the approximately $50,000 cost. Generous donations by the congregation raised the total amount needed by December 2012. We paid off the total required without having to borrow money and pay interest.
