COURSE DESCRIPTION This course exposes the students to the background, policies, position, status and functions of Malay language. In addition, the students will be taught about the pronunciation, intonation, spelling and grammar to enable them to communicate and write well in this language. OBJECTIVE This course is offered to enhance the students ability to use Malay language up to their intellectual level for effective communication either in writing or speaking form official, creative or non-creative contexts. LEARNING OUTCOME Students should be able to: Use the national language effectively in writing and speaking Communicate in the language effectively in terms of intonations and grammar Understand written materials which range from various types and styles, and abole to express their opinion through writing or speaking in the language correctly and effectively Summarize and expand their ideas systematically, compress and effective Write various types of Malay essay in a correct way Communicate in respected manner at the same time maintain the good values COURSE CONTENT Part 1: PENGENALAN KURSUS Part 2: SEBUTAN DAN INTONASI Part 3: ISU EJAAN DAN TATABAHASA Part 4: KOMUNIKASI LISAN Part 5: KEFAHAMAN Part 6: PENULISAN

1. Students should maintain at least 80% of attendance throughout the semester to be allowed to sit for the final examination. 2. If a student is unable to attend any assessment, notification should be given to the lecturer concerned within 24 hours of the assessment time. By producing proper documentation upon returning, the student can request for an assessment of equivalent level within 3 days. 3. Students are awarded a final grade which corresponds with the marks obtained. 4. In order to pass this subject, students are required to attempt the final exam. Failure to sit for the final exam will result in a fail grade for the subject. 5. Students must pass this subject in order to graduate. 6. Resits of final examination. A student who obtains a final mark of 40 to 49 (for pass mark of 50%) or 35 to 39 (for pass mark of 40%) for the subject will be allowed to resit the examination. The resit examination will carry the same weight as the final examination. In exceptional cases, the Board of Examiners may grant a student in this mark range a resubmission of an assessment within a stipulated time if the student performed well in the final examination but did poorly in the coursework component due to valid reasons such as health or compassionate grounds. The maximum mark that will be awarded for a resit is a pass (50% / 40%). The following will not be eligible for a resit or resubmission even though the final mark is within the range of 40 to 49 marks (for pass mark of 50%) or 35 to 39 (for pass mark of 40%): Student who are barred from the final examination due to poor attendance; or Students who do not turn up for the final examination without a valid reason; or Student caught breaking University College rules such as disruptive behaviour during an examination or contravening academic integrity rules e.g. cheating in the examination.

Final Examination (50%)


Final examination is a closed-book examination of two hours. It seeks to determine students individual effectiveness in responding to specific questions under time-constrained invigilated conditions. It consists of 3 sections: Section A: Section B: Section C: Students are required to answer 30 multiple-choice questions by shading their answers onto the MCQ answer sheet provided (use only pencil). (30 marks) Students are required to answer 20 structural questions (comprehension and grammar) by writing their answer on the answer booklet. (40 marks) Students are required to write one guided essay on topic given by writing their answer on the answer booklet. (30 marks)

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Students are required to sit/attempt the final examination. Failure to do so would result in a fail grade (F).

Mid-Semester Examination (20%)


Mid-semester examination is a closed-book examination of one hour. It consists of 2 sections: Section A: Section B: Students are required to answer 30 multiple-choice questions by shading their answers onto the MCQ answer sheet provided (use only pencil). (30 marks) Students are required to answer 20 structural questions (comprehension and grammar) by writing their answer on the answer booklet. (20 marks)

Assignment (30%)
The assignment is usually practical in nature whereby students ability to communicate in the language will be evaluated. Group Assignment (30%)
