interconnecting indigenous
young artisans and young urban
fashionistas through fair trade
“Dire” is a Visayan word for “Here” and Husi is a Manobo word for “Friend”
Indigenous, outofschoolyouth artisans from allover Northern Mindanao, who
moved away from their native domains to search for a better life in the city (Cagayan
de Oro), are showing their intrinsic talent and expressing their identities in the
indigenous designinspired necklaces, bracelets, accessories, and amulets they
create.
But more than fulfilling their creative yearning, the youth social enterprise they
established in 2004 called “Dire Husi” , has provided more than 500 young Manobo,
Higaonon, Umayamnon, Tigwahanon, Matigsalug people with alternative sources of
income.
What do we wish to do:
The initiative will connect the “affluent and comfortable” young people in urban areas to the
“marginalized and disadvantaged” young artisans of Northern Mindanao through a
uniquely tangible way, through the undervalued yet solid foundation of youth culture:
Accessories
Small, creative products that are hip, but at the same time, can act as a meaningful
reminder, that after all, young people are making their way out of poverty;
that after all, connection and communion are possible; that after all, both the marginalized
and affluent young people got a “friend” somewhere.
2) It will enlarge and affirm young artisan's potentials and skills in the creative sense
and in running a creative enterprise (business sense).
3) It will foster interaction between the “affluent and comfortable” youth and the
“marginalized and disadvantaged” youth. This connection can further bring
about long term business and personal relationships
What do we want to see:
1) Increased production and sales of Dire Husi accessories and increased income for
young artisans.
Indicators: Sales Report, ProfitSharing Report
2) Enhanced participation of the artisans in the creative process that can bringin new
design ideas and better organizational (collective) processes.
Indicators: New, Homegrown Product Designs, Collective Creative Process System
3) Alternative “market” for the products and increased involvement of campusbased
organizations in bringing in change to the lives of the “marginalized and
disadvantaged” young people.
Indicators: PartnerDealers and Retailers
(Student Organizations and Individuals)
Studentinitiated Activities for Indigenous People
How do we go about it:
The Dire Husi initiative will provide capacity building training to the young artisans
of the Dire Husi Youth Social Enterprise. It will expand its production by exploring
new designs and materials and it will reach “untapped” young urban markets in
Cagayan de Oro, Davao, General Santos and Manila through campusbased
interactions.
Project Parts:
AFFIRMING THE NEW AGE ARTISANS
The Dire Husi initiative will provide youth artisans with capacity building programs,
with particular focus on the following topics: 1) “appreciating and tapping” their
internal and collective creativity, 2) affirming their roles and potentials as indigenous
artists, and 3) building a democratic, socially responsible, environmentally friendly
enterprise.
BUFFING UP THE ENTERPRISE
The outputs of the creative process can be used in developing new designs and
new products. Production can then be expanded by sourcing and buying, traditional
and “new” raw materials for the accessories, and by exploring new designs and
products.
MARKET AND INTERCONNECTION TESTRUN
A campustour will be launched to “market” the products and to facilitate
interaction among the young artisans and campusbased organizations.
Longterm personal and business relationships established in these
integration activities can then be nourished.
