Examination System:
Examination system is given in the booklet of Rules and regulations of B. Tech. Programme for
theory courses. Those courses which have practical component (Termwork/Sessional) or which are
completely practical (Termwork/Sessional) in nature will be evaluated regularly during the regular
schedule (50%). It also has mid-term evaluation (25%) and the end term evaluation (25%). The
practical grades shall appear separately on the grade card.

The main objective of this course is to introduce the students to the fundamentals of
computers, operating systems, office suites, Internet, and utilities. The students should be introduced
to the Microsoft Windows and/or Linux platforms. The topics to be covered in brief are as follows:

MS Windows Platform
1. Study of personal computer internals, assembly, and networking. Installation and
configuration of Windows OS, office suites, and utilities.
2. Study of Windows (95/98/ME/2000/XP) operating system: Graphic User Intergace (GUI),
File and folder operations, Control panel, Settings for display, printer and other devices,
Other programs and accessories such as Notepad, Word Pad, Paint, Imaging etc.
3. Introduction to Office Suite (e.g. MS Office, Star Office): Word, Excel, Power Point, Access.
4. Introduction to the Internet, Mail, FTP etc. Study of Browser such as Internet Explorer or
Netscape Navigator.
5. Introduction to the important utilities: File compression (e.g. WinZip), Antivirus software
(PC-cillin, Norton Antivirus etc.), Download accelerators, Entertainment software (WinAmp,
MS Media player etc.), Acrobat Reader etc.

Linux Platform

HU 202: COMMUNICATION SKILL (L-0, T-0, P-2, CR-1)


The main objective of this course is to prepare the engineering students for future career,
further studies through development of listening, reading writing and speaking skills. The course may
be dealt with in following ways:
• Discussion by tutor about theoretical nature of different aspects of communication skill.
• Practice of it by the students as pronunciation, public speaking, organizing meeting etc.
• Intervention by the tutor for corrective measures.
• Understanding and grasping and then reporting by the students.
Reporting will be in the form of journal containing minimum 1-12 exercises based on
separate topics from the following:
1. What is communication – need, importance, types, objectives. Communication process,
barriers, principles of effective communication.
2. Modes of communication.
3. Practice of effective communication through eye contact, voice modulation, audience
awareness, presentation plan, non-verbal language.
4. Face to face conversation – self analysis.
5. Understanding guidelines for telephonic conversation – making and receiving calls, telephone
message.
6. Interview for employment – preparing self and reporting for sample questions on educational
background, co-curricular activities, extra curricular activities, experience, general
knowledge, miscellaneous.
7. Data collection – Role of communication in organizations around and experience sharing by
the students.
8. Meetings: Understanding role and importance of procedure, chairmanship, participation,
physical arrangements, rules for successful meetings- experience sharing and reporting.
9. Group Discussion, seminars, and conferences – Understanding different aspects – experience
sharing and reporting.
10. Practice of public speaking with use of audio-visual and graphic aids – experience sharing
and reporting.
11. Paragraph writing – Understanding principles, general hints – writing and analyzing
paragraph written on 3-5 topics.
12. Understanding the principles and practice of office drafting, circular, notices, memos, telex/
telegraph/ email messages.
• Applications: resumes, sales enquiry, reply order, complaint.
• Reports: Feasibility report, analytical report, progress report, project report, inspect of
damage and losses.
13. Preparation of notices, agenda, minutes etc.
14. Language grammar – Concept, units of expression and meaning – Graphemes, and phonemes,
Morphemes, words, phrases, clauses, sentences, sentence elements etc.
15. Oral skills – Articulation of sounds structure of syllable stress, rhythm, connected speech –
intelligibility, clarity, and pitch.
16. Use of integrated skills of communication.
