REPHRASING GROUP VI: RELATIVE CLAUSES

TYPES: Defining relative clauses: They give information about the Noun they follow She is the singer who visited my school Sometimes we find a preposition at the end of the clause: Is that the guy who you spoke to? Non-defining relative clauses: They offer additional information which is not essential: The tickets, which cost $50 each, were posted to the wrong address. The relative pronoun cannot be omitted in this type of sentences That cannot be used in these sentences. PRONOUNS: Relative pronouns are used to add a clause to a sentence. They make reference to the Noun they follow. WHO / THAT are used to refer to people: This is the woman who/that wrote the song WHOM also refers to people but just in formal registers and when they substitute an object: Thats the woman whom I asked WHICH / THAT refer to objects: This is the CD which/that I bought WHERE refers to places: This is the house where I was born WHEN is sometimes considered a relative too: That was the time when I met her WHOSE express possession: Thats the band whose lead singer was arrested OMISSION OF RELATIVE PRONOUNS: The relative pronoun can be omitted when it is the object of the clause. When it is followed by a Subject and a Verb, it is probably an object. Thats the boy I was going to the concert with 1. I bought a house. It was advertised in the local paper. 2.
