With our Christmas Season concluded for another

year we have a relavely short burst of Ordinary
Timejust four weeks!before we encounter the
other great combinaon of liturgical seasons: the
Season of Lent, the Paschal Triduum, and the Season
ofEaster.

EasterSundayisanearlyonethisyear,andverysoon
the preparaons for Lent (our Lenten program and
otheracviesofpreparaon)andEaster(withallthe
major celebraons to be prepared for) will take our
aenon, and righully so. Which is why this short
interludecomesatagoodme,whenwecanpausea
moment to catch our breath aer the highpoint of
Advent,ChristmasandtheChristmasSeason.

In saying that, Im not suggesng that we disengage

from our mission, but rather pause and refresh
ourselves during this rst burst of Ordinary Time so
that we can engage once again when we plunge into
our journey through Lent and Easter that is only four
weeksaway.

Next Sunday we will mark Australia Day and I would

like to hope that our community will gather once
again on our Naonal Day to give thanks to God for
the great gis we have received as a naon, and to
seek Gods blessing on our naons year ahead. If we
arehonestwithourselvesthereismuchtobegrateful
for in our naon, and yet there is also sll much that
remainsundone.

Our celebraon of Australia Day, centred around the

celebraon of Eucharist, is a most ng way to mark
this day in our naonal calendar. Our Mass for
Australia Day will take place in our Tuncurry Church,
commencingat10am(pleasenotethechangeofme

convicon that what is most important about public
worship is that we gather the sisters and brothers
together for a fesval, a special occasion, a
celebraon of the reign of God (not yet terribly
evident in daily life nor in the instuons of society),
that helps all of us feel so good about ourselves, so
important, so dignied, so precious, so free, so much
at one . . . not as escape, not merely in disncon to
daily roune, but in judgement, in the Lords
judgement on those ways and instuons. A

So that we might receive communion in a t and
properway,pleasebeawareofthefollowing:

When we process forward to receive communion,

we are asked by the Australian Bishops to adopt a
common and unied gesture of reverence before
doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow of the
headandshoulders(GIRM,160).Anyotherformof
reverence,suchasagenuecon,istobeavoided,
both because it disrupts the nature of procession,
andbecauseoftheBishopsrequestforacommon
gesture.
Communion by selfinncon is never permied,
since we receive communion and never take
communion.Pleaserefrainfromdoingso.
We do not have the physical facilies to oer
communion while kneeling, and aempng to
kneel while processing forward is inappropriate as
it interferes with the nature of the procession.
Pleaserefrainfromkneelingtoreceivecommunion.
We have come to know and to believe
in the love that God has for us.
