LEARNING LOGS Learning Log Task 1: Write a 200-250-word summary of each of the main texts you will use

in your final paper. Pantene Shampoo Ad Summary A four-minute long shampoo commercial shows the viewers the struggling yet determined life of a young deaf-mute girl who loves playing the violin. The girl grows up in a poor living environment: she is continuously bullied, ignored by the society because of her disability and, thus, discouraged in achieving her dreams to become a violinist, to be accepted by everyone. Sharing her dream and suffering the same situation, a deaf-mute street violin artist becomes her only encouragement and friend who pushes her to believe in herself and be confident. When she asks crying, Why am I different from others? the old man answers with a rhetorical question Why do you have to be like others? and a statement which seems impossible, Music is a visible thing. Close your eyes. You will see. With his support and her talent, she continues to practice playing the violin on the street alongside with him. Although they both receive a lot of applause from the audience, they unfortunately end up being beaten by a group of bullies. The old street violin artist is on his deathbed, the girls violin is smashed into pieces. Although it seems that this was the end of her hope, her last attempt to enter the classical music competition playing Pachabells Canon in D Major with her taped-up violin turns out to be a success with the applause of the audience. The slogan You can shine appears at the end as the conclusion of the short story.

Children See Children Do Ad Summary The commercial shows how the actions of adults affect the behaviors and attitudes of kids. It features children following adults and mimicking their habits, behaviors and actions, especially the bad ones. They are exceptionally good at copying: they learn really fast from their parents who raise them; they adopt quickly the actions and behaviors. At the beginning, the pattern seems negligible and harmless: talking on a cell phone, making a call on public telephone, waiting in a railway station. However, the actions become more and more intense and insidious: smoking on an escalator, being rude with a struggling woman, littering in a public place, being drunk, road rage, racism, being cruel to animals. The peak of the series of actions is the example of verbal and physical violence over domestic issues. A woman yells at her baby, accompanied by her older daughter, making the baby scream louder. A man is joined by his son as he verbally and physically abuses his wife. The commercial finishes with the scene in which a man helps a woman gather spilled groceries and the child joins in. The advertisement leaves a message of Make your influence positive in the audiences mind.

Learning Log Task 2: Analyze the rhetorical strategies used in each of your texts (for example, the way your texts handle purpose; audience; genre; angle of vision; appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos, and use of evidence). The intended audience of both commercials is different. While Pantenes commercial is for mostly girls and encourage them to buy its products, NAPCAN produced its commercial for everyone to raise their awareness of sociological problems. As we can see, NAPCANs advertisers aim to a much broader range of audience with a more positive goal for society. Although their intentions are different, they both share the same method of advertising. They agree on the use of persuasive appeals, organizational and visual components. The commercials
dont use any persuasive words but convince audience visually. When sound is not an important element, images play a decisive role in capturing audients attention. In these commercial, actions speak louder than words. They both raise the issue of the relationship between society and individuals; however, their angles of vision are different. Pantene puts its concentration on the beauty of individual among others, whereas NAPCAN makes the audience ask themselves how each person affects the society by their careless and ignorant actions. Both companies employed persuasive appeals including logos, ethos, and pathos. Pantene focuses more on the use of pathos which captures the audiences hearts by a touching short story; in contrary, NAPCAN draws the attention by using a series of increasingly distressing events to build credibility and logical arguments (ethos and logos).

Learning Log Task 3: Identify main issues or themes in your assigned or chosen texts. Then explore the similarities and differences in their ideas. These two commercials contribute to each other from both side of the connection between community and individuals. While Pantenes commercial focuses a lot on each person, NAPCAN cares more about the society, and how it is shaped by each individual in it. Pantene persuades the audience to be confident, while NAPCAN makes them notice how important their actions are in shaping the society. Although both Pantene and NAPCAN seem different in their intentions and angles of vision, they share the same issue the connection between society and people. They encourage the audience to be positive by their slogans: You can shine and Make your influence positive. Both agree about how important each person is in the community.

Learning Log Task 4: In light of what you have read and thought about so far, explore your own views on the original synthesis question that has guided your probing of the texts. After seeing both commercials, I understand that community and each individual are connected and contribute to each other to complete both sides. According to NAPCANs commercial, each person can help to build a better society, whereas Pantenes commercial implies that society may influent on each individual negatively or positively. In addition, everyone is important and should be treated equally without prejudice or racism.

Learning Log Task 5: Reread your first four learning logs and consider how your own views on the synthesis question have evolved and emerged. Think about the risky, surprising, or new views that you can bring to your readers. In light of your reading and thinking, explore what you want to say in your own voice to show the connections you have made and the new insights you now have. Although the commercials seem too different at the first glance, we could see the connection between them if we look closely. Both commercial made me realize and remind me about the connection between each person, and each person with the society as a whole. Its the interaction between people that build the community in which they live. Thanks to technology, people are becoming more and more careless about their relationships. Thats an inspiration for these commercials. The deaf-mute girl in Pantene is neglected and abandoned by people around her just because of her disability. The adults in NANCAP commercial are not caring or paying any attention to their kids, who were just imitating their bad habits. Technology has its benefits and, however, downsides as well. We sometimes should get away from dependency on technology and treasure our relationships like family and friends.
