Syllabus for Business English


GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION Elective course for second-year students of non-English majors Credit hours: 2 Lecture hours: 2 Textbook: Market Leader Course 2, by David Cotton, et al, Higher Education Press, 2005 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Course Objectives
The course is designed to enlarge your knowledge of the business world and develop the essential communication and language skills needed in business contexts. It aims to build competence, fluency and confidence in learners in handling telephoning, socializing, negotiating, meetings and presentations.

Introduction to Market Leader


What is Market Leader and who is it for?
Market Leader is a pre-intermediate level business English course for business people and students of business English. It has been developed in association with the Financial Times, one of the leading sources of business information in the world. It consists of 12 units covering the following topics: Careers Selling online Companies Great ideas Stress Entertaining Marketing Planning Managing people Conflict New business Products The course will greatly improve your ability to communicate in English in a wide range of business situations, develop the communication skills you need to succeed in business and will enlarge your knowledge of the business world. Everybody studying this course will become more fluent and confident in using the language of business and should increase their career prospects.

Course Components What is in the units?


You are offered a variety of interesting activities in which you discuss the topic of the unit and exchange ideas about it. You will learn important new words and phrases which you can use when you carry out the tasks in the unit. You will build up your confidence in using English and will improve your fluency through interesting discussion activities. You will read adapted articles on a variety of topics from the Financial Times and other newspapers. You will develop your reading skills and learn essential business vocabulary. You will also be able to discuss the ideas and issues in the articles.

Listening You will hear interviews with business people. You will develop listening skills
such as listening for information and note-taking.

Language become more accurate in your use of language. Each unit contains two Language review
review boxes which provide a review of key grammar items. You will develop essential business communication skills such as making presentations, taking part in meetings, negotiating, telephoning and using English in social situations. Each Skills section contains a Useful language box which provides you with the language you need to carry out the realistic business tasks in the book. The Case studies are linked to the business topics of each unit. They are based on realistic business problems or situations and allow you to use the language and communication skills you have developed while working through the unit. They give you opportunities to practice your speaking skills in realistic business situations. Each case study ends with a writing task. A full writing syllabus is provided in the Market Leader Practice File.

Revision units Market Leader Pre-intermediate also contains four revision units, cased on
material covered in the preceding three Course Book unites. Each revision unit is designed so that it can be done in one go or on a unit-by-unit basis.

Course Requirements
To receive a grade for this course, you need to meet the following requirements. Attendance

Students are expected to attend all classes and complete all course requirements. According to Sun Yat-sen University's attendance policy, students who miss a third or more than a third of classes will have to redo the course. Excused absences are those accompanied by a doctor's or department offices note. Remember that to receive a grade for attendance, you may not be absent unexcused for more than twice. Each unexcused absence results in a deduction of 2 points. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed if you are absent from class. You must complete any make-up work or assignments on the same schedule as the rest of the class. Being absent does not excuse you from tests or tasks on the day you return. Should you be absent for any reason, please try to inform the instructor in advance and ask a classmate to collect handouts for you. Punctuality is also very important. Students who are late are disruptive to the rest of the class and may hold back group activities. So please arrive on time. Only registered students may attend classes; please do not bring friends to class. Please turn off cell phones before class begins. Class Participation & Role Play Your participation in class discussions, role plays and group projects is important and is an essential part of your grade. Students are expected to take an active role in class activities and remember your contribution to the activities benefits everybody including you. Simulation games will be given to check for understanding of homework and class lectures. Presentations Students will be required to lead formal presentations. Your presentation will be critiqued on the rubric prepared by the instructor, which puts great emphasis on content, organization, effectiveness, preparation, delivery and teamwork skills. Please sign up for presentation time and make appointments to discuss the topic with the instructor at least one week before you give the presentation.
