KOLKATA INDUSTRIAL VISIT (22nd Sep, 2012 30th Sep, 2012)

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am highly indebted to Prof. Anmol Roshan Bodra, Head of Department, Marketing for providing us the opportunity to go to Industrial Visits. I am thankful to Dr. Rohit Vishal Kumar Sir and Prof. Bhaskar Bhowani for constantly guiding me throughout the visit. They were the source of inspiration and a mentor throughout the trip. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to all my peers who helped me in making this project a successful. Lastly I am thankful to the institute for conducting such an excursion which benefited the students in gaining the knowledge about the corporate and useful knowledge sharing by the industry experts.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Industrial visit is a part of curriculum in the institute where students from various streams visit various companies in four cities namely Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore. The students are divided into different groups based on their streams and they are accompanied by their respective faculty members who act as guide throughout the tour. The whole objective for conducting these visits is to give students an experiential learning by visiting various organizations and learning their work culture and environment. The students also get to know the current industry practices and the present industry situations. Apart from this corporate interaction the companies are also invited for to visit the campus for final placements/summer placements.

Kolkata IV A Brief

We a Group of 25 students from Marketing and Finance along with Prof. Rohit Kumar Vishal and Prof. Bhaskar Bhowani were boarded on 22nd Sep, night in train for Kolkata and reached their next day in early morning. We were divided in a group of 5 students Both from Marketing and Finance. Our group consists ofShruti Kedia (Finance) our group leader Piyush Gupta (Finance) Nidhi gupta (Finance) Shilpi Goswami (Finance) Amlaan Chatterjee (Marketing) After reaching Kolkata we had to visit the companies from whom we have taken appointments. In total Kolkata group visited 45 companies and 2 Factory visits and in which our group visited 6 companies and 1Factory. It was a nice experience while meeting the top executives of these reputed companies where I had gained lot of information related to current situation of the company, internal working culture, present industry practice, competition faced by the company.

Individual Initiatives and Efforts


My individual purpose behind this visit was to enhance my communication skills, to find out more about the industry standards and prevalent industry practices, gain an insight about the requirements of the industry, and build confidence in interacting with people from higher hierarchy of corporate worlds, individual networking and enhancing people skills as well as building personal relationships. I wanted to get corporate links, find out about the present requirements of the industry. It was also to learn how to work as a team and how to execute orders given by seniors. Prior visiting to Kolkata, we were given a presentation which was supposed to be presented in front of the companies visited on behalf of the XISS. A database is given to all the group leaders in which the companies name, address and contact persons number were given to whom we can get appointment. Each group member was allotted with some of the companys name to whom they can follow for an appointment. I also made a call to various companies for an appointment but many HR people used to reply that they are not available during that time period or they had done with their recruitment process.

Modus Operandi
We were divided into groups of five. My group consisted of: 1. Amlaan Chatterjee 2. Piyush Gupta

3. Shruti Kedia 4. Shilpa Goswami 5. Nidhi Gupta Nidhi Gupta and Shilpa Goswami were given the assignment of getting appointments according to the database supplied. The rest three make the visits and briefed the concerned authorities about the current situation of the institute and how it has evolved over the decades. The interactions were on a very professional level and ended with inviting them for the final as well as summer placements. On certain occasions, we were also accompanied by the faculties present. We were also shown how the organizations operate and what they expect from individuals joining them in near future.

Date and Time of Visit- 25th September, 10:00 AM Synopsis of interaction- It was good experience meeting with Mr. Saha where I have gained knowledge about latest trend and competition faced by Adhunik group. He clarified our queries related to the Mining indutry companies and also asked us about our batch profile. He also shared his experience in the company and told about the hierarchy in the company. He also told his expectations about the placements if he visits our campus for placements. He had also given an option of campus on wheels. He was interested in engaging our college students for internships but as we are done with our internships so we had invited him for our junior batch for internships.

Electrosteel. Camac, Kolkata Contact Person- Miss. Radha kejriwal, Miss.sneha Kachar. Mode of fixing meeting- Through telephonic conversation and follow up. Date and Time of Visit- 25th September, 12 Noon Synopsis of interaction- Miss. Radha kejriwal the CEO of the company met a group of 6 students along with both the faculties. After having gone through our presentation she was highly impressed with the content. She questioned us on various parameters and showed keen interest in visiting the campus. She detailed us about the various process there company is involved in and also briefed us about the industry standards.

Mother Dairy Fruits and Vegetables Pvt. Ltd. Karunamoyee More, Kolkata Contact Person- Mr. Abhimanyu Sharma Mode of fixing meeting- Through telephonic conversation and follow up. Date and Time of Visit- 26th September, 4:00 PM Synopsis of interaction - It was good learning for me when I had visited Mother Dairy as I have already done my internship from there. He told us about the importance of sales person in this company where a candidate has to be more updated with regarding to the market. He asked us some questions regarding marketing and also our future goals in our life. He also did a mock interview with us and gave us some valuable tips for interview.

SKP GROUP. Hazra, Kolkata Contact Person- Mr. Avik Mukherjee Mode of fixing meeting- Through my personal contact. Date and Time of Visit- 27th September, 4:00 PM Synopsis of interaction - Good experience. Mr. Avik mukherjee was very keen in providing us the insight about his company and also the competition faced by the company. The company is not involved in campus placements but they assured that in near future if they go for campus placements they will surely consider XISS.

Gfk Mode Mayfair Road, Ballygunge, Kolkata Contact Person Mrs. Udita Ghosh Sarkar Mode of fixing meeting- Through telephonic conversation and follow up. Date and Time of Visit- 28th September, 12:30 PM Synopsis of interaction - It was nice meeting with Ma'am who is XISS RD alumnus of 89 batch. She was very happy to see us. She told us about her company. It is basically a Market Research based company where a candidate has to be good in statistics and numbers. She told us that she will visit our campus and come for

placements for RD students and also she will refer us to commercial research Delhi office to consider Marketing and Finance students. IDBI BANK Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata Contact Person- Mr. Rajeev Rudra. Mode of fixing meeting- Through telephonic conversation and follow up. Date and Time of Visit- 29th September, 10:30 AM Synopsis of interaction - visiting this bank was extremely beneficial as we got a detailed view about the banking practices currently prevalent. We were accompanied by both our faculties and met a lot of officials along with our alumni Rajeev Rudra. The presentation was carried out by me , alpana dutta and shruti kedia. The company has previously recruited from xiss and is satisfied with what our college has to offer. Currently they have no openings but as soon as they face any requirement they would surely consider xiss as one of the best options.

Key Learning
The visit has been immensely fruitful in all aspects. It has helped me build my personal skills and also manage group dynamics efficiently. The exposure gained shall help me mould myself into a professional who can be an asset to the organization and withstand the economic turmoil and face the organizational challenges We could get a gist of how corporate world functions and how our course curriculum can be applied in real world.

We feel more confident since we interacted with the various levels of management and were able to know their expectations from us. The hesitation to interact with highly designated strangers has lessened to a great extent.

Every company has different culture. We came to know about the various company cultures.

Time management is key factor which I had learnt because many companies were particular about the appointment time slot.

Gained a positive confidence while calling these top executives and talking with them over phone as well as meeting them personally.

Conclusion
Industrial visit survey provides the students and programs with dynamic real time feedback that is very useful in the program learning outcomes process. It enables educational institutions to build close ties with industrial experts and also to achieve the learning outcomes to students. Several broader educational partnerships have emerged as a result of these visits. These include students internships, funded research projects, curriculum development, student career opportunities. More over students will gain the subject learning outcome by means of pre, after and post industrial visit survey. This has resulted in enhanced visibility for the students among their learning outcomes and their portfolio.
