KEISER UNIVERSITY
Master of Heath Science in Physician Assistant Course Syllabus
COURSE TITLE: COURSE NUMBER: CREDIT HOURS: PREREQUISITES: Microbiology MPA 521 3.0 graduate semester credit hours Successful Completion of MPA 514, MPA 513, MPA 511, MPA 512, MPA 510

INSTRUCTOR Pirouz Daftarian PhD pdaftarian@keiseruniversity.edu

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course provides an overview of infectious organisms, pathogenic mechanisms by which microbes and parasites cause disease, antimicrobial agents that are used to treat such infections, mechanisms by which organisms develop resistance against antimicrobials, and epidemiologic patterns of common infections. Students learn how to apply the classification and characteristics of microorganisms to determine which types of antimicrobial drugs might be most efficacious in treating a given infection, as well as how to predict which pathogens are most likely to have caused a specific infection. Course material also covers the physiologic mechanisms of humoral and cellular immunity, processes by which immune deficiencies exacerbate infectious conditions, and applications of biotechnology in creating diagnostic and therapeutic immune agents. RELATED PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Effectively demonstrate core knowledge and application in daily practice. Demonstrate analytic and investigatory thinking in clinical situations. Demonstrate a medical knowledge of pathophysiology, patient management, surgical principles and health promotion and disease prevention. COURSE OBJECTIVES
SM 7/16/08

2 Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate emerging competency in the following learning domains: 1. Demonstrate an accurate understanding of those aspects of medical microbiology that are of particular significance in the fields of clinical infections and chemotherapy. 2. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the principles of diagnostic microbiology and their clinical correlation. 3. Demonstrate an understanding of disease pathogenesis, epidemiology, manifestation, diagnosis and antimicrobial treatments 4. Define and differentiate the bodys innate and adaptive immune responses. 5. Describe the normal processes of cellular and humoral immunity to pathogens, including the functions and properties of different cell types and organs of the immune system. 6. Describe the regulatory controls of the immune system. 7. Predict the consequences of deficiency in a particular component of the immune system. 8. Identify techniques used by biotechnology to create diagnostic and therapeutic agents. 9. Describe techniques used to make biological inferences from protein and nucleic acid sequences. 10. Utilize appropriate medical terminology to describe the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology of discussed infectious diseases. Notes on Assessment/Course Evaluation: 1. The maximum grade of an 80% will apply to any late assignment or to an exam taken at a different time than scheduled. All work, including the final exam, must be completed by the ending date and time of the course. 2. Failure to obtain an overall grade of 80%, but not less than 70% will result in the student taking the Comprehensive re-examination, in which the student will receive a grade of pass or fail. If the student passes the Comprehensive exam they will receive a maximum course grade of a C. 3. Failure to pass the comprehensive re-examination will result in dismissal from the Physician Assistant program. 4. Students are responsible for all readings assigned and may be tested on material in the chapter, although not covered in lecture. 5. Cheating is not tolerated and may result in an exam grade of zero at the course directors discretion. COURSE MATERIALS
