Why is the thermal conductivity of metals higher than that of fluid? Derive general heat conduction equation for isotropic material in Cartesian co-ordinate system. What is the aim in the analysis of heat conduction problems in a solid? Derive the expression for temperature distribution for two dimensional conduction in a infinite cylinder. What is the difference between semi-infinite and finite bodies in heat transfer? Discuss the various numerical methods to solve two dimensional heat conduction problem. In 1m 1m solid block three sides are maintained at 3000 C and one side is exposed to ambient air at 900C. If h=10 W/m2K, find the temperature distribution by (i) Matrix inversion method. (ii) Gauss-Seidel iteration method and (iii) Finite difference method. A cylindrical stainless steel ingot, 15 cm in diameter and 40 cm long passes a heat treatment furnace which is 6 m in length. The temperature of the furnace gas is 12800 C. The initial ingot temperature is 1000C. The combined radiant and convective heat transfer coefficient is 100 W/m2K. Calculate the maximum speed with which the ingot moves through the furnace if it must attain 8500C temperature. Take K steel = 45 W/mK and thermal diffusivity, =0.4610-5 m2/sec. Derive the temperature distribution and heat flow for a infinitely thick plate with negligible surface resistance. Long steel square bar (5 cm 5 cm), is initially at 1500C. Neglecting surface resistance. Find the immersion time necessary to reduce the maximum temperature in the bar to 500C. Take K = 60 W/mK, =0.045 m2/hr. Contd. in Page 2

Code: 9D17102 6 (a) (b) (c) (d) 7 An industrial furnace in the form of a black body emits radiation at 3000K. Calculate the following: Monochromatic emissive power (radiant flux density) at 1m wave length. Wave length at which the emission is the maximum. Maximum emissive power. Total emissive power. Two concentric spheres 25 cm and 35 cm in diameter with the space between them evacuated are used to store liquid air (-1500C) in a room at 200C. The surfaces of the spheres are flushed with aluminium ( = 0.04). Calculate the rate of evaporation of liquid air if the latent heat of vapourization of liquid air is 218 KJ/Kg. Assume that other modes of heat transfer are absent. What is meant by solar radiation? What are the radiation properties of the environment? Calculate the radiation equilibrium temperature for a plate exposed to a flux of 700W/m2 and surrounding temperature of 250C if the surface is coated with (i) White paint or (ii) Flat black Lacquer. Neglect convection. *****
