Consumer Electronics (CE)

Samsung Electronics has announced plans to halt production of traditional CCFL-backlit LCD TVs and focus on LED-backlit models. Samsung saw shares drop despite record profits of 4.2 billion. A Japanese government-backed fund will spearhead a plan to merge the lithium-ion battery businesses of Sony. Panasonic is shutting down its only dedicated plasma TV manufacturing. LCD TV sales in China reached 39.27 million units in 2012, up 5.9% on year, and are expected to climb another 4% on year in 2013.

Parallels announced last week that networking giant Cisco had acquired an equity stake in the company, Belkin announced it would buy the Linksys brand from networking giant Cisco Ericsson said it would buy the telecom and media unit of French technology consultant Devoteam. Nokia Siemens Networks is planning to go to the public markets. Shares of Foxconn fell more than 4 percent. Foxconn is poised to manufacture TV-maker VIZIO's first smartphones in China this year. Global tablet shipments will overtake notebook shipments in 2013, growing by 38.3% on 2012 levels to hit 210 million units. Smartphone shipments rose 36 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter. Taiwan-based manufacturers will ship 6.508 million digital cameras in total in the first quarter of 2013.

Samsung Display announced that it has exceeded 300 million panels in cumulative OLED. LG Display reported a $299 million profit for the fourth quarter. Sharp has decreased production of LCD screens used in Apple's 9.7in iPad.

Innolux is set to ship approximately two million Ultra HD TV panels in the first quarter of 2013. Seiko Epson has announced it has begun volume production of its latest Ultimicron panel. A research team of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) has developed a way to make paper-like flexible display devices closer with remarkably low cost. Global display applications market is expected to reach $164.24 billion by 2017, at an estimated CAGR of 3.1% from 2012 to 2017. IT panel prices are expected to drop US$0.50-1.50 while TV panels are expected to see one of the biggest drops at US$1-40. Large-size TFT LCD panel shipments from Taiwan makers were down 5.9% on quarter in the fourth quarter of 2012 at 67.19 million units largely. OLED lighting panels will reach a market size of nearly $2.8M in 2012 and will peak to nearly $1.7B by 2020.

Markets for solid state thin-film batteries at $65.9 million in 2012 are anticipated to reach $5.95 billion by 2019. MEMS microphones reached about 2.06 billion units last year. Shipments of ARM processor chips are likely to grow from 68% of all processor shipments in 2012

NTT DoCoMo Inc will soon release a low-cost tablet computer. LG and NTT DoCoMo have joined to unveil the Optimus G Pro. Global users will double in 2013 and that by 2016 LTE will claim more than 1 billion subscribers. The total value of UK television commissions is now over 3bn.

Toshiba announced that a leading German luxury car manufacturer is now shipping its vehicles standard with HDD. STMicroelectronics announced details of a miniature smart sensor that combines a 3-axis accelerometer Atmel announced the company has signed an agreement with Exegin Technologies Limited. ALi announced that ALi's DVB-T2 solutions for the Russian market are ready for mass production. ILITEK will start shipping LCD driver ICs for two to three 40-inch and larger panel applications in 2013.

Peugeot Citroen and Robert Bosch said they are teaming up to develop a hybrid powertrain system. Toyota announces that starting it will sell an electricity management system.

Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW Group are working together on next-generation batteries. By 2016, more than 55 million people worldwide will have Internet access built into their vehicles. Penetration of factory-installed safety and security telematics shipping globally in new cars will reach 15.7% in 2013. Global sales of electric vehicles estimate that worldwide sales will hit 3.8 million a year by 2020.

The Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ) has started work on the integration of Japanese ventures, with the consumer electronics giant at the core of its plan, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported, citing unnamed sources.

CE Market LCD TV market in China

LCD TV sales reached 39.27 million units in 2012, up 5.9% on year, and are expected to climb another 4% on year in 2013, according to market estimates in China. LCD TV sales are expected to reach 40.7 million units in 2013 due to expected economic stability in China as well as to China-based panel makers increasing TV panel production, said the estimates.

ICT Industry Samsung 7 Galaxy Tab

Samsung is expected to introduce a 7in Galaxy Tab featuring a Full HD display at the MWC event scheduled for next month. The tablet is said to be using a quadcore processor, notes Sammobile. Apart from the display and processor, there is not much information about the other features of the device.

Among the top contenders are credit card giant Visa, with a market cap of $106 billion; networking equipment titan Cisco (CSCO), with a $112.13 billion market cap; semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm (QCOM), with a $110.6 billion market cap; and chip vendor Intel (INTC), with a $104.58 billion market cap.

Amazon Acquisition of Ivona Software

Cisco Acquisition of Intucell

Amazon.com Inc said it acquired text-to-speech technology company Ivona Software, a sign that the world's largest Internet retailer may be looking to develop more services similar to Apple Inc's Siri voicebased search product.

Cisco announced its intent to acquire privately held Intucell. Headquartered in Ra'anana, Israel, Intucell provides advanced self-optimizing network (SON) software, which enables mobile carriers to plan, configure, manage, optimize and heal cellular networks automatically, according to real-time changing network demands. The acquisition of Intucell enhances Cisco's commitment to global service providers by adding a critical network intelligence layer to manage and optimize spectrum, coverage and capacity, and ultimately the quality of the mobile experience.

IBM, the world's largest technology services company, reported fourthquarter earningsand revenue that beat estimates on the back of growth in emerging markets. International Business Machines Corp said its quarterly net income rose 10 percent to $6.1 billion, or $5.39 a share from $4.71 a year earlier. Revenue dropped 1 percent to $29.3 billion.

Acquisition an equity stake of Parallels

Nokia Siemens Financial

Web hosting and cloud software maker Parallels announced last week that networking giant Cisco had acquired an equity stake in the company, a move that will certainly enable the two companies to collaborate on the direction of their products around cloud services.

Nokia Siemens Networks is planning to go to the public markets to try to get some financing through high-yield bonds for up to 700m (580m, $930m).

Selling off Linksys to Belkin

Belkin announced it would buy the Linksys brand from networking giant Cisco. Linksys was acquired by Cisco back in 2003 for $500m to give the firm a brand for selling routers and access points to homes and small businesses.

Ericsson Acquisition of Devoteam

Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson said it would buy the telecom and media unit of French technology consultant Devoteam.

Shares of Foxconn International Holdings Ltd (FIH), the world's biggest contract maker of cellphones, fell more than 4 percent after the firm said it expected to record a net loss for 2012 as a result of low demand from its major clients. FIH said on Wednesday its net loss for the second half of last year was expected to be smaller than the group's first-half net loss, which came in at $226.07 million, its worst ever first-half performance.

ICT Market Tablet Shipments

Digitimes Research forecasts that global tablet shipments (including both branded and white box models) will overtake notebook shipments in 2013, growing by 38.3% on 2012 levels to hit 210 million units. Shipments of branded tablets alone are forecast to reach 140 million units.

Smartphone Shipments

The aggressive pricing of the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 is likely to give Google strong momentum in 2013. Digitimes Research projects that Google will become the number two tablet vendor, while Apple will retain the top spot, with its share of branded tablet shipments declining slightly to 55.6%. Factoring in white box tablets, Apple's share of all tablet shipments will drop below 40%. The explosion in white box tablet shipments in 2012 means that Android will overtake iOS to become the largest platform in 2012. Combined shipments of all Android tablets - including branded, white box, Amazon and Barnes & Noble devices - are projected to hit 121 million units in 2013,

Smartphone shipments rose 36 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter as the sleek devices supplanted personal computers and other gadgets on holiday shopping lists, according to a report released Friday. IDC estimates 219 million smartphones were shipped during the final three months of last year. That compares with nearly 161 million in the same 2011 period. Smartphones accounted for about 45 percent of all mobile phone shipments in the fourth quarter, the highest percentage recorded by IDC. Samsung Electronics Co. retained its bragging rights as the smartphone leader, shipping nearly 64 million devices for a 29 percent share of the global market. Apple Inc. ranked second with nearly 48 million iPhones shipped during the fourth quarter, translating into a market share of 22 percent. For all of 2012, IDC estimated nearly 713 million smartphones were shipped worldwide, a 44 percent increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, annual PC shipments fell 3 percent from 2011, IDC said. It was the first annual decline since 2001.

Flat Panel Industry Samsung Display AMOLED

Taiwan-based Ability Enterprise, Altek, Foxconn Electronics and Asia Optical will ship 6.508 million digital cameras in total in the first quarter of 2013, decreasing 14.2% on quarter and 36.3% on year, Digitimes Research predicts. In terms of image sensors, 56.6% of the shipments will be of 16megapixel CCD models, 22.5% of 16-megapixel CMOS models and 15.0% of 14-megapixel CCD models, according to Digitimes Research. Nikon will be the largest client accounting for 42.85% of the shipments, followed by Fujifilm's 18.56%, Sony's 10.91%, Casio's 9.65%, Olympus' 7.97% and Pentax's 2.55%. Ability Enterprise will account for 53.7% of the shipments, Altek 25.41%, Foxconn 17.96% and Asia Optical 2.92%.

Samsung Display is reportedly working on new pixel layouts for use in its upcoming small-size AMOLED panels in order to bump up the panels' resolutions, according to industry sources. Samsung Display Co., Ltd., a global leader in display panel technologies and products, announced that it has exceeded 300 million panels in cumulative OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel production since mass production began in January 2007.

Innolux Ultra HDTV

LG Display reported a $299 million profit for the fourth quarter thanks to mobile product launches by key customers including Apple Inc. but warned that earnings will decrease in the current quarter as demand for iPhones wanes. The South Korean panel maker said its October-December net profit totaled 319.7 billion won ($299 million) compared with a loss of 6.3 billion won a year earlier when the European Union fined the company 215 million euros for price fixing. Sales rose 32 percent to 8.74 trillion won.

Sharp Cutting 9.7 production

Sharp has decreased production of LCD screens used in Apple's 9.7in iPad. Sharp, which produces displays for a number of Apple products including the iPhone and iPad, has reportedly cut production levels of 9.7in iPad screens. The firm has cut production by such an amount that it is barely producing any 10in panels, according to reports.

Innolux Corporation is reportedly trying to enter the Ultra HD TV supply chains of multiple TV vendors including Sony, Toshiba, Haier and Skyworth to provide Ultra HD TV panels, according to industry sources. The sources said that Innolux's 50inch and above size Ultra HD TV panels are becoming increasingly popular in the market and that their shipments are expected to increase throughout all of 2013 as the company is reportedly working on low-cost solutions for its Ultra HD products. Innolux is set to ship approximately two million Ultra HD TV panels in the first quarter of 2013 and expects that its Ultra HD TV panel shipment proportion will increase from 5% during the time period followed by 10%, 20% and 30% in the second, third and fourth quarters, respectively, added the sources.

A research team of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) has developed a way to make paper-like flexible display devices closer with remarkably low cost. Polymerbased electronic circuits are expected to open up possibilities for ubiquitous electronics including flexible displays, but also RFID tags and large-area sensors.

Prices for large-size panels including LCD monitor, notebook and TV applications are expected to drop throughout January 2013 due to weak demand from downstream vendors, according to market observers. Panel makers were proactive in pushing sales routes throughout the second half of 2012 and were able to provide adequate supply to downstream vendors . But now the vendors are concerned about adjusting their supply and are preparing to launch new products throughout the year, which is expected to drop panel prices even further throughout January. IT panel prices are expected to drop US$0.50-1.50 while TV panels are expected to see one of the biggest drops at US$1-40, noted the observers.

Ilitek LCD Driver IC

Microsoft Corp. is reportedly in discussions to help finance a buyout of struggling computer maker Dell Inc. According to the Wall Street Journal, which cited a person familiar with the talks, Microsoft's investment "would likely be in the range of a couple of billion dollars." CNBC reported a range of $1 billion to $3 billion, citing sources close to the matter.

Mobile phone service provider NTT DoCoMo Inc will soon release a low-cost tablet computer in Japan priced between 10,000 yen (69 pounds) and 15,000 yen, the Nikkei reported. The tablet will be made by China's Huawei Technologies Co and feature a 10-inch screen, the Japanese business daily said.

Automotive Industry Bosch Developing hyrid powertrain system

NCR Corporation (NYSE:NCR) and Elavon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) and a leading global payments provider, have agreed to combine NCRs tablet and mobile-based point-ofsale (POS) technology with Elavons payment processing and distribution channels to extend easy, secure and affordable POS solutions to small business customers.
