The flooding was caused by unusually strong monsoon rains, the flood waters have inundated the city, closed schools and offices, and entered the presidential palace. Authorities have declared a state of emergency to allow use of national funds and other resources. Journalist (VICKY): We link with Rafael, our reporter in Jakarta city Good night Rafael, what is the situation over there? Reporter (RAFAEL): Good night Vicky I'm in one of the most affected districts by flooding. This is the central business district in Jakarta but this part of the city is so badly affected and this time you can see that the city has been paralyzed as many parts of Jakarta it has been caused by the rains. Journalist (VICKY): And what about people in Jakarta? Is there water and food for them? How are they affected? Reporter (RAFAEL): Many people have lost everything. They fear that epidemics arise due to water contamination. Im with some victims... (this is Tobias and this is Edison), how do you feel after all that has happened? Victim (TOBIAS): Im really sad, Ive tried to reach my stuff, but it was not possible. Im feeling lost. I have to recover and think in my future.

Reporter (RAFAEL): Many jakartans have troubles to walk through the water. Offices and schools have been forced to close. Victim (TOBIAS): I came home, I tried everything and I feel really tired. For 2 hours I tried walking through the water. We need concrete steps. Reporter (RAFAEL): Thank you Mr Tobias Mr. Edison is an other victim, tell me Mr Has the government given you a shelter? What do you need most urgently?

Victim (EDISON): We received medicine from Indonesian Red Cross, but thats not enough. Some of us have been lucky. But some people have not received any aid. So we need water especially for kids and some food to endure the day. Reporter (RAFAEL): A lot of people have started to suffer from colds because some of them sleep on cold floors without any floor mats or blankets.
