Applying to the Ph. D.

Programme
The Department hereby advertises one externally financed PhD Candidate position, funded by the multidisciplinary Centre for Natural Disaster Science and with a focus on negotiations and treaties aiming at the management and prevention of natural disasters. Final date of application is 15 April 2011. No faculty-funded positions are available for this round. During 2011 there will subsequently be one joint application round for faculty-funded and externally funded PhD Candidate positions. Final date of application for this admission opportunity is September 30. Prospective applicants are hereby invited to apply. Applicants that have sought external funding with the funding decision pending for later in the autumn may also apply. An applicant to the PhD Programme claiming external funding must be able to document guaranteed and full funding for at least 2 years. Further, external financing here refers to two types of financing organisation: either a reputed research council or an equivalent research funding organization with a professional capacity to independently assess the quality of applications or a national/international governmental/non-governmental organization that wants to sponsor one of its employees, f.e. to raise the professional competence of the person in question. The Departments standard criteria for admittance into the Ph.D. programme will be used, for faculty-funded and externally funded positions alike. The main criterion is formulated thus: In order to be admitted, a prospective Ph. D. candidate shallthrough relevant and in writing documented scientific abilitybe judged able to, within the given time frame (4 years), author a Ph.D. dissertation that will, at a minimum, be classified as good by international standards. Three additional criteria also apply. These are: The centrality of the proposed Ph.D. theme in relation to peace and conflict research in general and to ongoing/planned research programmes at the department in particular. The pedagogical skills of the applicant, as documented in the application or otherwise. An assessment of the contribution of the applicant as an institution-building resource in terms of the three tasks of Swedish universities: teaching, research and societal interaction. A complete application should, at a minimum, contain the following: 1. A filled-out application form (download the pdf-file from the departments webpage: http://www.pcr.uu.se/education/phd. NB. Add your e-mail address somewhere on the form! 2. A personal letter of intent on your research interests, career plans, why you are choosing our institution, other relevant personal information, etc.; 3. A project plan, that is, a Memo of some 3-5 pages about the proposed dissertation on the research problem you want to address, whatever you may have in mind in terms of theoretical grounding, dependent variable, empirical material, methodology

to be used in addressing the problem, etc). Please note that your application is judged more on passed merits (what you already have written), than on future merits (what you will write). There is no need to be more elaborate than what you feel comfortable with in this memo. 4. A Curriculum Vitae, including verified copies of the degrees, certificates and diplomas (this refers to BA and MA degrees, with documentation translated into English) that make you eligible to enter the programme, as well as transcripts of all courses taken and grades obtained. 5. Writing samples; normally, MA and/or BA thesis, articles, course papers, essays, etc. 6. Letters of reference/recommendation from academic scholars that are familiar with your work. You may also send the different parts of the application as e-mail attachments. If you are unable to send the application electronically, a paper copy is acceptable. The applicant is responsible for sending in a complete application (see above). The Department is unable a) to point out to applicants that material is lacking; and b) to provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
