This project will also make awareness among the masses regarding the drastic affects of Drug Addiction.

Foreword:
Addiction can be defined as the only mental disorder that convinces the affiliated that beside him everyone is ill. This is because of addictive denial; this is not a conscious act. An addict eventually almost zombie-like and running on automatically, very unlike his former self. Addiction means giving up conscious control. It is impulsive, unconscious behavior. As it is said in alcoholics (or narcotics) anonymous, addicts are people who have lost all control of their lives. These people have tried at many different times to stop using these substances for their personal, financial or social reasons and yet they could not! If you are a drug addict, you have intense craving for the drug. An addict wants to use it again and again. Diagnostic and Statistical menu of Mental disorders (4th Edition) has categorized three stages of addiction: 1. Preoccupation / Anticipation 2. Binge / Intoxication 3. Withdrawal / Negative effect Addiction is generally is used to compensate for something that is missing in their lives, or to meet some need that the addicts knows no other way to meet. It could be depression, general unhappiness or a simple inability to deal with the situations that occur in life.

Economic & Social Affects of Drug Addiction

Economic Affects
Work, Employment & Productivity Drug abuse occurs most frequently among young people in the 15-35 age group, with a particular concentration in the 18-25 age group. It thus includes those who have entered or who are just about to enter the workforce. Given the high unemployment rates in many countries, entry into the workforce is often a major problem. Consumption of illicit drugs limits chances of entering or remaining in the workforce, while frustration caused by failure to find adequate employment favors drug consumption, thus creating a vicious circle.

Social Affects
Family & Community Families have a powerful influence on shaping the attitudes, values and behavioral patterns of children and thus preventing substance abuse, peer groups often prove to have an even stronger influence. The negative influence of peers appears to increase when parents abdicate their traditional supervisory roles. Family factors thought to lead to, or intensify, drug abuse include prolonged or traumatic parental absence, harsh discipline, failure to communicate on an emotional level and parental use of drugs. Lack of household stability triggered by low and irregular income and unemployment may increase the stress on the family and its vulnerability to drug abuse. This opens a wide field for possible government action to reduce such vulnerability. Health The negative impact of drug abuse on health is obvious, scientifically established and documented in an extensive literature which is beyond the scope of the present report. The toxic effects and addiction risk of the major psychoactive drugs, licit as well as illicit are shown on page no VII &VIII. Education Though education and drug abuse often appear to be in a circular relationship, it is generally believed that education is an important point of intervention for the prevention of drug abuse. School children who use drugs often suffer from impairment of short-term memory and other intellectual faculties, impaired tracking ability in sensory and perceptual functions, preoccupation with acquiring drugs, adverse emotional and social development and thus generally impaired classroom performance. Reduced cognitive efficiency leads to poor academic performance and a resulting decrease in self-esteem. This contributes to instability in an individuals sense of identity which, in turn, is likely to contribute to further drug consumption, thus creating a vicious circle. Environment Environmental damage related to illicit drugs is caused in producing countries by clearing of forests, growing of crops as monocultures, processing of harvested plants into drugs and the use of environmentally dangerous chemicals without the necessary precautions being taken. Crime, Corruption & dangers for Civil Society Drugs increase the likelihood of many kinds of criminal activity. Drug-related crime occurs primarily in the form of trafficking-related activity, including violent conflicts among trafficking groups competing for increased market share. It also results from the need of drug consumers to finance their addiction through theft and prostitution. While the link between drugs and crime is well-established, expert studies and opinions differ as to how far law enforcement prevents crime by limiting the number of drug abusers. Some researchers even question whether law enforcement may not, in fact, contribute to an increase in certain kinds of crime, such as violent conflicts among dealers for market share and crimes committed by abusers to finance their habit

Suggestions regarding the Eradication of Drug Addiction

For Federal Government
1. Broader NARCOTICS CONTROL POLICY covering every aspect related to this field. 2. Controlled cultivation of the opium crop under the supervision of provincial government of NWFP. 3. Alternative employment opportunities for the people living in FATA and NWFP, areas where opium is cultivated. 4. New laws should be made and implemented in this regard. 5. Strict custom checking of the goods send to Pakistan via Afghan boarder and measures to stop the smuggling of drugs. 6. Focus on better employment opportunities for the youth in all the provinces so that they cannot indulge in any sort of illegal activities through loans and internship schemes. 7. Education curriculum should be equipped with the topics related to this drug addiction in order to make youth aware regarding the after affects of this evil. 8. Media campaigns can also play a vital role in this regard.

For Provincial Governments

1. Provincial governments should make strict security measures to stop inter provincial smuggling of drugs. 2. Provincial governments should make rehabilitation centers for all those addicts who are showing the willingness to return to their normal life. 3. NGOs should be fully encouraged in this regard by the government. 4. Pharmaceutical companies must be discouraged to produce any drugs that are made for the sole purpose of drug addiction. 5. Pharmaceutical stores should also be warned not to sell any kind of drugs to the one who they think is buying them for addiction purpose.

For District Governments

1. Police should play an active role to curb the activities of all those who are involved in the selling of drugs. 2. Nazims should make sure with the help of police and excise department that no shopkeeper is selling cigarettes to the individuals who are below the age of 18 and that no body is brewing or selling alcoholic beverages none other than those who are permitted [Mainly the non Muslims in Pakistan who are given permission by the law]. 3. Any other legal means by which the district government think they can control this evil.
