A former Eastern Michigan University mathematics teacher will face a preliminary examination next month on murder charges. Jean Pierre Trias, 44, is accused of murdering his wife in Pittsfield Township. Trias appeared in court Jan. 22 for a preliminary examination. However, it was adjourned and rescheduled for 10:30 a.m. Feb. 19. Police say it appears his wife, 53-year-old Katherine Kellogg Porter, died from multiple stab wounds. Trias taught math classes as a part-time lecturer off and on between Sept. 1, 2003, and Dec. 31, 2012, according to an EMU spokesman. He was not a professor or an EMU employee, and wasn teaching anything this spring semester, but he did teach during the last fall semester. He previously held the part-time position of coordiTrias nator of mathematics, tutoring and testing services for EMU from Aug. 30, 2004, to Jan. 15, 2011, according to the university. Porter was found dead by officers performing a welfare check at about 4:46 p.m. Jan. 11 in the 4700 block of Hickory Pointe Boulevard, according to the Pittsfield Township police. Trias was also inside the residence and arrested. He was arraigned Jan. 13 on a charge of open murder, which can include all degrees of murder and lodged in Washtenaw County jail being held without bond.
