Pilot Fleet
Autonomous Network Measurement Platform

Pilot Fleet is the solution for network operators and service providers who have a lot of benchmarking to do but few engineers to spare. It tests up to eight different 2G/3G networks simultaneously, while your key personnel monitor in real time from the office. No competing system offers such robustness or convenience in a single unit. Fleet represents the pinnacle of autonomous network diagnostic technology. It offers the most bang for your buck.

Network operators are being squeezed between increased competition, higher spectrum charges and the effects of the credit crunch. Network build costs must be incurred only when necessary. The only certain path to operating profitably is to maximize the performance of your network, anticipate and correct faults, and remedy capacity limitations before they affect customers. When traffic loss and customer churn are minimized, revenue and profits are maximized. The Fleet autonomous testing system offers the shortest route to an improved bottom line. As a completely autonomous system, Fleet operates around-the-clock collecting, processing and analyzing of data from unattended Remote Control Units (RCUs). A full-sized RCU can feature up to eight integrated test modules, yielding a load capacity of as many 2G/3G networks or four independent internal MOS tests. Competing solutions, which use flimsy commercial handsets as test module substitutes, would require complicated and cumbersome scaling to handle this workload. Test data is both stored locally in the RCU and uploaded to a central database for immediate and subsequent processing. A subset of this data consisting of vital performance parameters can be accessed through the web client, enabling

immediate visualization of system status. Competing systems, which cease testing during data transmission, cannot be monitored in real time. Post-processing results, such as engineering information, statistics and KPIs, can be manually and automatically e-mailed to any desired address. If results reveal something unexpected, further measurements are not necessary. The data onhand can simply be re-analyzed more thoroughly. Fleet is meant to measure once and process many times. Costs from unscheduled drive tests need not be incurred. Fleet is a state-of-the-art platform that is compatible with GSM900/1800/1900, GPRS/EDGE, CDMA IS95A/B, CDMA IS2000 1X/EVDO, TDSCDMA and UMTS/HSDPA technologies. RCUs are available in Standard (8X) and Mini (3X) form factors, both of which feature the same real-time data transmission capabilities. The Standard unit is DC powered and is intended primarily for drive testing, while the AC-powered Mini RCU is more suitable for indoor use. Both can be configured for any combination of 2G or 3G modules and scaled for any workload. Regardless of your location, technology or future plans, Fleet will meet your needs.

Pilot Fleet

How it works
RCU Numerous RCUs (Remote Control Units), each with a specified combination of modules, are deployed in any vehicle (car, bus, truck, boat, etc.) or mounted in static locations. They are programmed to collect network data from handsets, cells and external scanners. All data is stored locally in log files and transmitted automatically to the central server. RCU configuration, service tested, data collected and data upload method are defined by the user via simple web client setup screens. Web Client This software allows users to perform all system functions from any terminal, anywhere. Test plans and tasks that define RCU operation and post-processing of collected data, followed by report generation and distribution, can be carried out through the client. Post-processing can be performed automatically or manually or both. A monitoring and maintenance screen shows the real-time status of all system hardware elements and allows setup of automatic e-mail distribution in case of any major system alarm.

Insight
Autonomous Network Optimization System
Insight is a measurement tool, but it is primarily a number cruncher. It analyzes bulk network data and determines patterns and trends that would be overlooked by conventional diagnostic tools. It detects not only flaws but the weaknesses that precede them, allowing you to nip potential issues in the bud. Insight gathers all the little details together to illustrate the big picture and vice versa. When an issue does emerge, the system collects signal data in real time and stores it so that operators can determine the exact metrics and messages relevant to user complaints. This enables a real-world picture of such complaints, more precise than what a simple alarm could offer, which will allow you to fine tune your network experience by minimizing nuisances such as interference, neighbor cell handover and dropped calls. Pilot Insight is the solution for GSM/UMTS network design and optimization. It is an autonomous network optimization system that acquires and analyzes bulk data through the A, Abis, C, D, E, F, IuB, Iu-CS, Iu-PS, Gb, Gi, Gn, Um & Uu interfaces and displays it comprehensively, making it an ideal aid for Customer Experience Management. Insight operates around-the-clock in your equipment room, running network tests, troubleshooting and digging deeper into problems and their causes. Insight clearly and concisely illustrates RF dynamics, enabling engineers to better plan and optimize your wireless network services and resources.

Your network gains users by the day, but competition fiercens by the hour. As your architectural complexity grows, the margin for error shrinks. In fact, it is gone altogether. The very network services you offer are the route to your undoing. Complaints become infamy at the speed-of-blog. Issues can no longer just be resolved; they must be avoided. Traditional KPIs, which indicate problems after they occur, are inadequate in this brave new world. Issues must be resolved while they are still latent, before they affect your bottom line. Insight is what we offer.

Explore
Network Planning & Optimization Platform

Explore is an RF network optimization platform that automates key elements of the optimization process, delivering greater speed and accuracy than ever before. Explore's key function is frequency allocation, simulated and actual, on the scale of a cell, station, region or network. Explore significantly reduces the grunt work involved in optimization, which gives engineers time to inject a little creativity into the process. Explore automatically chooses an optimal frequency allocation scheme based on the available data, while its simulation functions allow engineers to check out their hunches and hone their skills .

Explore Benefits
Reduced HR Costs Explore reduces your HR costs by streamlining the troubleshooting and optimization processes. Up to 80% of your optimization team's man hours may be spent on data collection, post-processing and report generation; Explore automates all three tasks, reducing the time involved from hours to minutes, while its MTR analysis functions enable timely resolution of uplink signal problems, reducing the need for drive testing. Timely Problem Location Explore integrates previously disparate elements of the optimization process, greatly reducing the repetition and legwork involved. Its frequency allocation functions integrate tasks such as BTS frequency selection, carrier expansion/reduction, frequency point replacement and BSIC planning; its call analysis functions include voice call searching & diagramming, handover performance analysis, peak value highlighting, resource utilization evaluation, and monitoring & template configuration for most of these elements. A breakpoint calculation feature, which saves computational progress automatically upon interruption, allowing later resumption from the same point, minimizes repetition and wasted time. Improved Network Quality Explore's superior operational and computational accuracy leads to a better running network. A reliable model for network frequency allocation is enabled through Explore's processing of measurement report (MR) data retrieved from your network's operational support system. Compatible OSS systems provide combined neighbor cell BCCH & BSIC measurements. When active, an MS reports the strength of the relevant serving cell signal along with those for its six strongest neighbors, for which the BSIC is decoded. Measurement reports are sent over the SACCH every 480ms and can be stored and post-processed so that potential interference between any cell-pair in a network is determined. By manipulating active BA lists and storing measurement reports sent by active handsets to the BSC, cell relationships (defined or undefined) can be obtained. These Inter-Cell Interference Matrix (ICIM) elements function as input for Explore. Measurement-based data obtained in this manner is more accurate than what traditional radio wave propagation models would offer. Frequency allocation modeling accuracy is also enhanced through Explore's incorporation of the Genetic Algorithm, a search heuristic designed to mimic natural evolution that has proven useful for real-world system optimization in fields as diverse as bioinformatics, chemistry, computational science, economics, engineering, manufacturing and physics. Enhanced User Experience Explore delivers clear, significant improve-ments in the KPIs that matter such as interference, handover, uplink & downlink quality, random access success, establishment & drop rates, BER distribution and complaint tallies.

Network optimization is an onerous, ad hoc ordeal. Inputs are diverse, disorganized and poorly integrated, leading to vast amounts of incompatible data that is difficult to backup and inefficient to process. This lack of standardization makes the process slow, both to do and to learn. Hours are spent each day collecting data, preparing reports and repeating calculations, tasks that are better suited a machine. That's where Explore comes in.

23

Explore
System Applications
Data Acquisition and Sharing Network optimization analysis typically involves massive amounts of data, including traffic statistics, network parameters and measurement data (such as BAR, MRR, RIR, etc.). If manual collection is needed, it will require at least three hours of an engineer's time, while processed data cannot be shared by multiple users; Explore remedies that situation. Traffic Analysis Your Network Optimization Division probably spends an hour editing statistical reports each day. Explore can produce these reports in one minute. Explore defines all parameters involved in traffic analysis reporting, and can do so on the scale of a network, region, city, cell, etc. Carrier Expansion/Reduction Carrier expansion and reduction are essential to network optimization. The working schedule involved is often complicated by an excess of data, including: - Daily maximum statistical values for a certain cell; - Basic configuration data, such as base station type, CDU type and transmitted information for a certain cell; - Tallies for cells that require expansion/reduction; - Cell expansion/reduction solutions and related frequency data; To simplify the carrier expansion/reduction schedule, Explore intelligently facilitates: - Auto-generation of carrier expansion/reduction data, including tallies for carriers requiring expansion/reduction, traffic volume, GPRS application conditions & related hardware info; - Auto-generation of frequency data for carrier expansion/reduction based on collected data & frequency evaluation. Frequency Planning Frequencies, local or network-wide, usually require frequent adjustment. Explore simplifies & improves the effectiveness of these processes without disruption. During implementation for a certain city-wide region, frequency adjustment, frequency comparison analysis, consistency checks, carrier repair and other efforts were all carried out without a single customer complaint, while speech & MRR quality, network traffic, call drop and handover KPIs were all significantly improved. Uplink Interference Handling Uplink interference can lead to poor speech quality, dropped calls and call failure. Explore locates this interference through its RIR analysis function. It determines interference category by analyzing the RIR wave, while locating it and determining its range through GIS analysis. Subscriber Complaint Handling After repeated subscriber complaints of call failure, an engineer will typically carry out a drive test around the call origin; this is costly & inefficient and also useless if the problem lies in the uplink signal. Explore can locate these problem quickly, with fewer drive tests, through MTR analysis. Coverage Overlap Analysis Whenever a network's capacity is increased, coverage overlap becomes an issue. Explore finds these areas through NCS, MRR and other analytical methods, enabling optimization engineers to modify antenna position and inclination in a timely manner. Neighbor Cell Optimization Ever-increasing network traffic makes neighbor celloptimization a tedious but vital task; mistaken removal of a cell will probably lead to call dropsand complaints. Explore's autoneighbor cell optimization function is practical, efficient andefficacious. It involves analysis of NCS, handover data, traffic data, parameter configurations, site location, and other data that leads to provision of reasonable, intelligent solutions. Parameter Management - Hardware details related to the site, containing data transmission info, CDU type, number of carriers, and site type, are listed in Explore's statistical reports; - Error Log and Faulty Log data can be utilized for site hardware fault analysis; - Explore's network parameter queries and comparison functions enable timely parameter alteration; - Consistent verification and abnormal data checking facilitate an orderly review of network parameters, identical or adjacent frequencies and identical BCCH/BSIC.

Why Explore?
Explore is an efficient, effective and convenient network optimization platform that collects data in bulk. - Explore greatly reduces the repetitive work involved in optimization, freeing up your skilled engineers for more challenging activities; - Explore has been designed from the ground up. The practical experiences & feedback from large numbers of optimization engineers have been utilized in every element of its design; - Explore has a small footprint; it can be implemented at no detriment to the user experience; - Explore brings more variety and creativity into the optimization process; - Explore's integrates a variety of other functions, making it an invaluable optimization aid.

Pilot Scout
Autonomous Network Measurement Terminal

Autonomous solutions are the divas of the RF network testing world. They are highly sought after and capable of great feats, but they are also costly and cannot be bothered with less glamorous tasks. A multi-terminal RCU is overkill for individual network benchmarking and unsuitable for pedestrian testing. A handset solution is suitable for both but far from ideal; there are costs involved with the use of name-brand hardware. A simple, dedicated autonomous testing tool is what is needed; Scout fits the bill.

Pilot Scout is a first-of-its-kind autonomous testing solution, compatible with all major 2G/3G wireless network technologies. It is a pocket-sized device that weighs less than five ounces and is powered by most sources encountered in the field (wall socket, car battery, USB). Scout is a singleterminal device and delivers the best cost-pernetwork tested among hardware solutions. It is the single most affordable network testing device on the market.

Scout is an extension of our Fleet autonomous network testing platform; it downloads test plans remotely (via Web Client) and uploads data (via Wi-Fi) to a central server in real time, all without test interruption. Users can directly monitor data streams online or receive KPI updates by e-mail or SMS (See p. 9-12 for more information on the Fleet platform).

Optimal Scenarios
Drive-test Benchmarking Scout's agile form factor and DC compatibility make it suitable for vehicular benchmarking. Its dimensions make it suitable for dashboard rigging or cabin recess storage, while its durable, lightweight chassis ensures that it need not be attended. Long-term Indoor Deployment Scout is inconspicuous, scalable and AC-ready, making it suitable for small-scale parallel and large-scale serial indoor testing. Its smooth, near featureless casing is resistant to manipulation, while its black finish keeps it from attracting the eye. It disappears very nicely amidst the other devices on a desk. Unplugging is also not ruinous, as utilization of its battery immediately triggers an automatic warning through the Fleet server. Short-term Pedestrian Benchmarking Scout is smaller than some handsets and features a 4-hour battery life. Engineers can carry it on foot for an entire morning or afternoon of benchmarking familiar ground, at less cost than a licensed engineering handset would entail.

Why Scout?
Scout is the first of its kind; there is no competing autonomous solution that offers such simplicity, value and ease of use. Scout is the latest extension of our Fleet platform, a proven system that has been continuously refined since it pioneered the market nearly ten years ago. Scout is easy to implement; it is compatible with most available power sources while SIM card changing is a snap. It is also a versatile solution; its size, durability and capability make it suitable for virtually any modest benchmarking scenario. But most important is its value; Scout is the most cost-effective network testing solution on the market.
