Last December marked the end of the printed magazine Newsweek, after 79 years of recording history. It will leave the era of the Gutenberg press to enter fully into the digital age after the financial meltdown the legendary publication that once reached a circulation of 5 million copies faced. The new times are ethereal and they circulate in the young generations everyday electronic media, even though some of us still need to stain our fingers while we turn the pages of the newspaper, listen to the sound the paper makes and to have it close to us to continue its reading when we please. That does not mean we do not believe in the digital age, on the contrary, that is precisely why we maintain also our digital edition, which we hope to improve every day. Once a friend of mine mentioned that it is much harder to have an elephant turn to change direction than a tiny mouse. Surely this saying also applies in this case. But as Newsweek is no longer a printed media, it is striking that Delaware has given birth to two new Hispanic magazines in the month of January this year. Of course we want to welcome both publications, Delaware Hispano and Slatina, and wish them the best of success as we believe that the more voices are present in the information scenery, the better it will be for the community that may have then different views as well as new topics for consideration. We also take the opportunity of this first issue of the New Year to thank all those who have supported us tirelessly over these years of informative effort, and of course we will always be indebted to each of you as we continue our efforts to serve as a bridge between the different social actors. In this issue we present the ideas of the new County Executive Thomas Gordon about how he sees the future in relation to the Hispanic community that lives in this county. We only hope that a new Latino leadership occurs during this administration. Its a good opportunity to introduce the new Executive Director of La Esperanza Community Center in Georgetown, Claudia Porreti, who assumed that responsibility last November and wants to be known to the community she will serve. We extend an invitation to all our readers to share with us their views on the implementation of English as a second language and bilingual schools in the state, as we are preparing a special issue on this topic.

Thomas Gordon, Open Door Policy

The New County Executive of New Castle says he wants to give all possible support to the strengthening of the Hispanic community in the county.
Thomas Gordon won the last election in November to fill the highest office in the government of Delawares greatest county: New Castle. Gordon is not new in office, rather he is the person who has longer held that position, as he was County Executive for two terms of four years, until 2004, and has now been chosen again. Practically, after winning elections, he took over the executive office without any transition. This has been difficult, says Gordon, there is usually a 3 month transition period in which an administration transfers its cases to the other and things are easier. Gordon intends to educate the Hispanic community in the county, especially on the importance of registering to vote to gain representation, while he plans to learn Spanish by the end of January, I work every day with my Rosetta Stone for improvement, which the members of his staff are also doing. He also considers that the immigrant community has been abused and has no voice, therefore in my work plan that is a priority. In another vein Gordon said, I intend to help reviving a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, as businesses are the base for the countys welfare, the idea is to teach them how to open and grow a business in the county, understand and comply with regulations and the issue is to help them grow. Something a bit more complicated is the issue of housing and that is why we have to work so there is no discrimination when buying or renting a home by the immigrant community, the County Executive emphasized. Gordon has a way of speaking clearly, perhaps inherited from his days as police chief and his command experience, however he wants it to be known that his policy will be one of open doors for people to know how the decisions are made and what they can do to propose an initiative to management. He is accompanied in this conversation with his El Tiempo Hispano his chief of press Melody Kitchen, by the not a very communicative person, his kind assistant Angela Walker, and Angeles Bellon, executive assistant, daughter in law of Jaime Figueras, a Cuban refugee with roots in Delaware, who serves as an interpreter of his office. We asked the Executive Gordon on the leadership role that Hispanic staff working in the County should have, to which he replied that they are considering candidates curricula for those positions and expects to have decisions made in no time. So far, he has already hired Tanisha Merced, in the assistant county attorney capacity, and who is a member of the States Hispanic Commission. While being open to listen to new initiatives, he hopes to work with people across all departments of county government. Another initiative he expects to boost is the Countys diversity committee, which he expects to increase to 7 members in less than a month and which will contribute with different points of views from the countys perspective. We know its too early for results, for now we only intend to present some of Tomas Gordons initiatives for the future of the county. I want to have a comprehensive leadership in the community (holistic), so that no one is excluded. Basically housing, accessible information in Spanish, such as documents translated into Spanish and the website with information in Spanish, best services through different departments and libraries, improve trust between police and the community, support football teams and Hispanic festival that are so important to the Hispanic community. Nice plans that we hope will come true and that we surely will keep reporting. If you wish to contact the office of County Executive, please call Angeles Bellon at 302 - 395-509.

Un Punto de Vista A Matter Of View

| Keyla I. Rivero-Rodriguez

Nuevamente
Bienvenido 2013!

Anew
Here we are in the first couple of weeks of a brand new year and with the hopes that 2013 will be a better year than the one before. As I make inventory of how 2012 was for me and if I compare it to other years, I have to say that a little better. It is my hope that it only gets better and better. In our country, 2012 was a year filled with violence and deaths due to gun shootings. It was the year when we lost Whitney Houston and Donna Summer, just naming two of many others that passed, but these two ladies left their mark on me while growing-up. Personally, I got to travel due to work and vacation. My two young adults are proving to be successful in all they do, and to top it, my first born got engaged to a dear young woman on Christmas day. No date for a wedding has been scheduled, but whenever they are ready, I will have a new dear family member. I have committed to a couple of New Year resolutions, and so far, I am following through and truly working at it. This year will be about me. Dont get me wrong, I have not become a selfish person, but I do have to dedicate more time in becoming and achieving to be the better and healthier person that I want to become. Where am I going with this, well, let me explain. Last year I turned 50 and I decided to have professionally done photos to commemorate this occasion in my life. The day when I viewed the proofs of these pictures, I was in complete disappointment and disbelief. My feelings of displeasure were not towards the photographer, she actually did a great job, but it was about me and the way I looked. You see, I learned that one thing is how we look at ourselves image in the mirror because we see what we want to see, and another is how we truly look in a photograph because this is how we truly look and how others view us. The image in the photograph does not lie, it is what it is and for so long I was fooling myself that I had truly not seen the image of what I had become. Trust me, this is a hard admission of confession if you will, but one that I must accept since I am committed on doing in order to work and achieve my new resolution. I will become healthier and lose the weight that has kept me unhealthy. With this brand new year of fresh and anew, what is it that that you want accomplish for yourself? My first step was to have a physical exam and I have joined a weight loss program. It is my hope that with this new attitude and baby steps approach, I will become healthier and kinder to myself. Welcome 2013!

ciVil UNiONs iN DElAwArE A recent newspaper article stated that same sex civil unions have exceeded expectations. But have they? There is more than one way to look at the numbers, so I did some calculations of my own. I looked at the 2010 Census numbers for adults in Delaware, the Gallop polling data on gays and lesbians as a percentage of the population, and the number of civil unions in Delaware since licensing began a year ago. I was very surprised at what I found! Assuming all of those sources are reliable, over 95% of Delawares gay and lesbian population did NOT get a civil union last year. Regardless of how you crunch the numbers, it is hard to ignore the reality that the vast majority of the gay and lesbian population isnt interested in getting a legal union. Jordan Warfel sMOkErs cAN HElP THEir HEAlTH AND wAllETs By QUiTTiNg THis yEAr To The Editor: The American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic wishes everyone a Happy New Year. As we ring in 2013, many of us will make New Years resolutions to improve our health and well-being. People who resolve to quit smoking this New Year have the chance to increase the length and quality of their lives. Quitting works its magic the minute an individual makes the choice. In just 12 hours after an individual quits, the carbon monoxide level in their blood drops to normal. Fast forward to a year after quitting, and the risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a smokers. Today, smoking has become increasingly expensive, with cigarette packs costing up to $10 in some areas. A $5 pack per day adds up to $1,825 per year. Quitters save their lives and can save money for the future. Quitting not only helps you, but also the loved ones and friends around you. Secondhand smoke affects everyone, and is especially dangerous to young children. If your New Years resolutions include quitting smoking, visit the How to Quit resource on our website. For facts on smoking and more ways to stop it, visit the Stop Smoking page. Sincerely, Deb Brown President and CEO, American Lung Association of the Mid-Atlantic kEEPiNg FUNErAl cOsTs AFFOrDABlE By Jason Alderman Anyone whos put a loved one to rest knows that death is not cheap. According to the National Funeral Directors Association, the average adult funeral cost $6,560 in 2009 (their most current data). That doesnt include such common add-ons as a cemetery plot, headstone, flowers, obituaries and limousine, which can add thousands to the bill. Because death is a frequently avoided topic, many people arent armed with information about the many variables and costs involved in planning a funeral. Thus, just when survivors are grieving and most vulnerable, theyre bombarded by decisions that must be made quickly, often without even knowing what their loved one would have wanted. The key message for the living is to decide on preferred funeral arrangements ahead of time and to convey those wishes to your family ideally in your will. Another important lesson: Know your legal rights and what funeralrelated goods and services cost so you or your survivors dont feel pressured into buying things you dont want or need. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) oversees The Funeral Rule, which regulates how funeral providers must deal with consumers. Among its provisions: Upon request, funeral homes must provide an itemized price list of all their goods and services, whether you call (even anonymously) or visit in person. You have the right to choose among their offerings (with certain state-mandated exceptions) and are not required to purchase package deals containing unwanted items. Prior to purchasing a casket or outer burial container from a funeral home, they must share descriptions and prices before showing you stock on hand. Providers that offer cremations must make alternative containers (besides caskets) available. Note: The Funeral Rule does not apply to third-party sellers such as casket and monument dealers, or to cemeteries that lack an onsite funeral home. If your beliefs dont require following specific funeral protocols, here are a few ways to reduce costs while still honoring the deceased and their survivors: Veterans, immediate family members, members of the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and certain civilians whove provided military-related service may be entitled to burial at a national cemetery with a grave marker. Burial is free, but families are responsible for funeral home expenses and transportation to the cemetery. A $255 lump-sum death benefit is available to surviving spouses or minor children of eligible workers who paid into Social Security. For many, cremation is a viable, less expensive option to burial. If you plan to hold a viewing first before the cremation, ask whether you can rent an attractive casket for the ceremony. Some families prefer not to hold a public viewing. For them, direct cremation or immediate burial may make sense. Because the body is promptly cremated or interred, embalming and cosmetology services are not necessary, which saves hundreds of dollars. Also, with direct cremation you can opt for an unfinished wood coffin or heavy cardboard enclosure for the journey to the crematorium. You can purchase a casket or cremation urn from a source other than your funeral home. The funeral home cannot assess handling fees or require you to be there to take delivery. The death of a loved one is always upsetting, but you may be able to ease your familys emotional and financial burdens by planning ahead. cONFlicTiNg sigNs AT THE lUlU rOss ElEMENTAry scHOOl The Delaware Hispanic Commission (DHC) would like to acknowledge the immediate actions taken by Dr. Phyllis Kohel, Milford School District Superintendent, to remove the conflicting signs at the LuLu Ross Elementary School. Drivers License for Immigrants

Illinois Drivers License Bill Exemplifies Bipartisan Consensus around Immigration
Behind strong bipartisan support, the Illinois legislature voted today to grant a special temporary drivers license to immigrants who are in the country without authorization. This commonsense public-safety measure will ensure that all drivers on Illinois roads will have been tested on their driving skills and on the rules of the road, and that they will have insurance. It now goes to Gov. Patrick Quinn, who supports the legislation. Support for the bill transcended party lines, a sign of a shift in the immigration debate. With support from business, health and faith leaders including the Illinois Restaurant Association, the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council and the Catholic Conference of Illinois, Republicans and Democrats united around the importance of keeping Illinois families together and keeping everyone on Illinois roads safe. The reality is that people need to drive in order to feed their families, said Mark C. Curran (R), Sheriff of Lake County, Ill. Having drivers who are uninsured, untrained and untested comes at a high cost to all of us. This bill will ensure that all Illinois drivers have licenses, which will make our roads safer for all drivers. It is the right move. The bill began in the Illinois Senate, where co-sponsors included 16 Democrats and five Republicans. It passed the Senate 41-14. In the House, a similar bipartisan majority approved it 65-46. The Illinois Legislature has shown the way forward on immigration, said Ali Noorani, Executive Director of the National Immigration Forum. More and more, political leaders around the country and in both parties are recognizing a new consensus among their constituents, one that recognizes the importance of immigrants and immigration to our nation and that demands a better immigration process. It is time for our leaders on the federal level to heed the call of law enforcement, business, faith and community leaders nationwide and create a better immigration process that keeps our families together, makes our communities safer and makes our economy stronger.

We All Want to Learn English

We often wonder whether it is better for our children, raised in Spanishspeaking households, to learn English and leave behind their mother tongue.
This is a question that is very current, once the greatest school district in the state has decided to make changes in the implementation of English as a second language for the next school year, so it would be good to clarify some points. First, the role of school administrators is simply to implement the best policies and use wisely the available financial and human resources to achieve the best possible education for children and youth they are educating. Parents also seek to have the best education available for their children. Secondly in the United States some laws have been passed, such as the Bilingual Education Act for primary and secondary school approved in 1968, which recognizes the needs of students with limited ability to speak and write English, and which has been updated several times, always with the aim of achieving a better integration of these students into the educational system. Current legislation reflects the belief that school districts need to provide a variety of alternatives to enable their LEP students to reach proficiency in English and to be academically successful in mainstream classes. Changes in bilingual education legislation reflect an evolution in public opinion as the United States accommodates new waves of immigrants. Though the education of students with limited English proficiency has been controversial at times, it has evolved in an effort to better meet LEP students needs. On the other hand, much has been discussed about the importance of bilingual education in that it gives the child of better brain skills and this should not be neglected. No wonder the Delaware Governor Jack Markell has made it his purpose that all young graduates from Delaware schools be bilingual, saying in his own words The benefits will go beyond their mastery of a second language, and the advantage they will have in an increasingly global job market. Research has also shown that language study improves academic performance, builds socio-cultural awareness and enhances cognitive abilities. And no one better than him to understand this reality, since he himself is bilingual. In fact, research shows that children can learn to read in two languages at the same time, to the benefit of performance in both languages. Bilingually educated children are shown to read at a higher level than children educated in only language. We believe it is prudent on the part of school administrators to implement changes that result in the improvement of our children while the parents are involved in these changes, hence we ask ourselves, What are the changes that are going to take place? Based on what studies or investigations will those decisions be made? How are parents, and even teachers, participating in these changes? Are the laws that guarantee the right for an appropriate education being followed? For this reason we are preparing a special informative piece on this controversial issue, which we hope to publish in our next issue. We will have a meeting with the leaders responsible for this coming transition to better share information with our readers, since at the end of the day, we all want to learn better English. So if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact us by email: editor@eltiempohispano.com

An Opportunity of God

Claudia Pea Porreti is the new Executive Director of La Esperanza Community Center in Georgetown.
Claudia knows she faces a huge challenge to accept the responsibility of leading the largest and oldest community center in Sussex County in southern Delaware, but this has always been my dream, since I started working with the Hispanic community in Indianapolis, 14 years ago. On November 12, she assumed the executive direction of La Esperanza, after the resignation of Zaida Guajardo. Previously she worked for a year at Milford in the organization Peoples Place, in Opening Doors, which is a shelter for women victims of domestic violence. Claudia is a lawyer by profession. She feels she is not fluent in Spanish but understands enough to communicate and over the years she has worked with nonprofit organizations that serve the Hispanic community. Her experience has been primarily in the defense of victims of domestic violence and the legal rights of Hispanic immigrants. My mother was Cuban. She raised me in Spanish and I married for the first time with a Puerto Rican and my mother-in-law now is Mexican, so my love for Hispanic people comes from birth, from my mother of course. Claudia feels that this work in La Esperanza is what she really wants to do, ii is like a dream, she says, for many years I wanted to lead an organization that would work helping Hispanics, so when the opportunity came, I could not believe it. In fact during the recent visit of Senator Tom Carper, I told him I was about to take another job in Wilmington, and when this came in, I knew it was an opportunity that God gave me, and I love it. I intend to improve my English to communicate better with the community we serve, Im sure that in a year, Ill have a much more fluid Spanish (in fact she does quite well). Claudia is proposed to design a strategic plan, learn more about the community and people, and personally introduce herself to all of those involved with La Esperanza, both those who receive services or support and those that provide funding, staff, friends, volunteers and all those whose actions have an impact on the community they serve. We want you to know that what we will do it better and well do our best, we are a strong organization to help the community. They are also looking for people to join the team, for example an education coordinator to teach English, which believe it or not, it is a non-existent position. Finally Claudia said, this is my passion and I plan on giving the best I can to help Hispanics in any situation or problem, I want to be the voice of the people, especially when it has to do with the immigration laws. I am a Latina. If you want to know more about La Esperanza Community Center, you can call 302-854-9262 or visit its headquarters at 216 N. Race Street Georgetown, DE 19947.

Latin American Community Center holds event to help youth apply for consideration of deferred action for childhood arrivals
The Latin American Community Center (LACC), in partnership with Aspira of Delaware and the Delaware Alliance for Community Advancement, held an event on Saturday, December 1, 2012 to assist youth and their families apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. The LACC, with help from Aspira of Delaware, enlisted six lawyers and eight law students to help those who were well into the process of compiling the required documents and information, but needed some help navigating the intricacies of the application. Law students from Widener and Villanova sat with youth and their families and helped them fill out the forms, while lawyers edited the completed applications and answered legal questions. Ana Velasquez, Director of Prevention and Advocacy at the Latin American Community Center, said, This event was very important because it allowed qualifying youth to access legal information and guidance. It would have been very difficult for these youth to afford the fees associated with hiring a lawyer for the entire process. The Delaware Alliance for Community Advancement was also on site to aid those who had not yet started the application process or who did not know anything about Deferred Action. This organization assists individuals who are now on the path to more comprehensive services. According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website, On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security announced that certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several key guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years, subject to renewal, and would then be eligible for work authorization. Deferred action is a discretionary determination to defer removal action of an individual as an act of prosecutorial discretion. Deferred action does not provide an individual with lawful status. For more information about this process, please visit http://www.uscis.gov/childhoodarrivals If you think you or someone you know may be eligible, please contact Vielka Catalan from the Delaware Alliance for Community Advancement at (302) 656-8200 or vcatalan@delaca.org

Bear Library Opens its Doors to the Public

The library is the temple of learning, and learning has liberated more people than all the wars in history. Carl T. Rowan. American journalist, writer, and radio and television commentator, who was one of the first African American officers in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
>Adriana Camacho-Church After a year of renovations, Bear Library opened its doors to the public on Saturday, January 19. Bring your family and friends, grab a magazine, newspaper or book and read surrounded by bright colors and warm natural light from the large windows that give the library a welcoming glow. Comfortable seating beckons a reader to reach for one of the thousands of books that line the bookshelves on virtually any subject; simply sit and enjoy. Or if you wish, with a New Castle County library card, borrow the book from the library and indulge yourself with a great story during these cold winter nights. You can also borrow from the hundreds of DVDs and hold a movie night with your family and friends. The library also offers a large collection of audio books, and music CDs for children, teens, and adults. If you prefer to read in Spanish theres a collection of magazines and fiction and non-fiction books. And if youre learning to speak and read English borrow from the librarys ESL (English as a second language) collection of CDs, books, DVDs, and audio-books to help you learn. The childrens section has a separate computer area designated for those 12-years of age and under. Here kids can use the computers for research and to print pictures in color or in black and white for school projects. Bear Library also offers a basic computer class that is free to 16-year-olds and older. The class is taught in Spanish and in English. Call or visit the library for times and dates or check out the librarys website www.nccde.org/libraries/bear To obtain a free New Castle County library card you need a Delaware drivers license or ID. Applications are available in Spanish and English for both adults and those 17 years of age and under. With a card, children, teens, and adults have access to the librarys databases which have information on health, SAT practice exams, and careers and other subjects. Some of these databases offer information in Spanish too! Visit http://lib.de.us/index.php/ebooks-more/ And now with a click of a button and a library card you can also borrow, read, and return a library ebook without stepping into a library. Chequeo Mdico

Health Examination
9th grade health examination requirement to go into effect next school year
The Delaware Department of Education reminds parents of eighth grade students that a requirement for a health examination prior to entry into ninth grade goes into effect next school year. The requirement, adopted in December 2011, mandates that all students entering both kindergarten and ninth grade have a health examination done within two years of entry into the grade. Schools must receive the completed forms within 30 days of the start of the school year. Previously, the examination was only required for students in kindergarten or enrolling in a Delaware public school for the first time. Routine health examinations are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. They are important for all children because they provide an opportunity for health promotion and early identification of health conditions that could impact the childs well-being and academic success, said Linda Wolfe, DDOEs director of School Support Services. We know that younger children are more likely to be seen by their primary healthcare provider. This new mandate ensures that adolescents also are seen. Originally scheduled to go into effect for this school year (2012-13), the state delayed implementation by a year to allow more time to communicate with parents and health care professionals. To assure compliance for September 2013, DDOE urges students to schedule appointments now. As with other regulatory requirements, students who do not meet the requirement will be excluded from school. The following forms will be accepted: Delaware School Health Examination Form DIAA Pre-Participation Physical Evaluation form Health Examination or evaluation document on a form acceptable to the school that includes, at a minimum: healthy history, immunizations, results of medical testing and screenings, medical diagnoses, prescribed medications and treatments and healthcare plans.

Tell Delaware
Tell Delaware survey to allow educators to share their workplace needs
Results of online, anonymous survey will help educational leaders plan school improvements Educators across the state will have the chance to share openly what they need to do their jobs in an anonymous online survey that launches later this month. TELL (Teaching, Empowering, Leading and Learning) Delaware will be open to all school-based, licensed educators - including administrators. By Jan. 22, every school will receive a packet of letters that contains the individual seven-digit, anonymous access codes for educators in the school. These will be sent to each schools representative with the Delaware State Education Association (DSEA), the states largest school employee union. Principals and DSEA representatives then will distribute the letters randomly at a faculty meeting. Teachers know what they need to succeed. We know teachers need to be heard. This confidential survey represents a chance for us to gather information that will help us find the best path forward, said Governor Jack Markell, who will launch the survey with teachers at South Dover Elementary on Jan. 22. Educators will have until Feb. 15 to take the survey. Results will be released in March. Great teaching is critical to great student learning. But its a real challenge to expect excellent teaching without providing teachers with the supportive working conditions they deserve, Secretary of Education Mark Murphy said. TELL Delaware gives educators the opportunity to tell us anonymously what supports are available in their schools and to help us identify what might be needed to better serve them. Funded by part of the states federal Race to the Top grant, TELL Delaware is a project of the Delaware Department of Educations Teacher and Leader Effectiveness Unit. It will be administered by the New Teacher Center, which since 2008 has conducted similar surveys in 20 states, including almost one million educators. The project is a collaboration between the department and key partners: the State Board of Education, DSEA, Delaware School Board Association, Delaware Association of School Administrators and the Rodel Foundation of Delaware. The state aims to have at least a 50 percent response rate in each school, the minimum needed for public release of each buildings results. A real-time response rate tracker is available at www. telldelaware.org to help promote broad participation in the survey. We know what makes a great school - a strong collaborative leadership, meaningful professional development, appropriate class sizes, time for collaboration with colleagues. This survey has a great chance to help schools and districts see where they are and where they need to improve, DSEA President Frederika Jenner said. We are urging our teachers to complete it so that we can track progress. There is so much research on what makes a great school that striving to improve in these areas is really a no-brainer. More information is available on the TELL Delaware website: www.telldelaware.org. A toll-free help desk also will be available during the survey period at (855) 258-2818.

If You do not Know Where You're Going, you Cannot Have a Productive Year
5 Characteristics of a Good Purpose
It's amazing how quickly 2012 passed by. Looking back, would you say you achieved the goals that you had proposed at the beginning of the year? Some people would answer: What purpose? Surprisingly, only 10% of the population annually writes their purposes. However, without a purpose, theres no way to know where your life is going. It is not about having it all planned, but at least know what our main goals are. Living life without purpose is like trying to put together a puzzle without knowing what the picture you are trying to put together looks like. I invite you to take a few minutes to think about what your major purposes in different areas of your life are, including work, study, family, finances, love, health, etc.. Here we share five characteristics of a good purpose, so you can be ready for 2013. If you want to spend a special time to analyze your life, leaving everything negative behind and design a winning purposeful life, we invite you to participate in the Personal Growth Retreat ROMPIENDO TUS BARRERAS, January 26-27 in Newark, Delaware, totally in Spanish. It is an extraordinary experience led by life coaches. For more information, visit www.masfelicidad.com or call 302-6686118. 1. SIMPLE It's easy to get excited in the heat of the Christmas parties, drinks and gifts, making a huge list of purposes such as: "I will put a business and be rich", "I'll find the love of my life." Note that none of them is simple; they are too ambitious and complex projects that require many intermediate steps to accomplish. 2. CONCRETE "I'll be happy", "Today I'm going to change." With this kind of purpose ... you have ensured failure. And as they say: Thanks for your participation! The key is: The more specific your desire, the more likely you will succeed. Watch the first I wrote: "I'll be happy," too ambiguous, vague, and difficult to assimilate. Now I give you concrete examples of how to do it: "I'm going to take a dance class, "I will go to the doctor." 3. MEASURABLE This is important, because it means that your purpose can be measured, evaluated, and when you check it empirically, you realize you earn it. Alright! A more accomplished achievement. This motivates you and raises your selfesteem. For example, it is not the same as saying: "Ill put on a diet and I will be very thin" to write, "I'll be down 2 kg in a month" 4. ACHIEVABLE Some people believe that setting very high goals will help them go further in life. And the reverse happens. Look at this example: "I will run 10 km every day," but you've never exercised or to catch a bus! Instead: "I'll take a walk to the park every day", is an achievable goal, you can go up in quantity gradually according to your pace. 5. SUPPORTED ON EXPERIENCE Which one works for you, not someone else. Support your goals in your own life experience in your learning. Avoid comparing yourself with others, everyone is different and has his or her own destiny. If your cousin got the best man in the world or your brother got the super job, good for them, you are you. Have a life filled with blessings for this 2013 and forever! And do not forget that you are invited to attend the Retreat for Personal Growth ROMPIENDO TUS BARRERAS January 26-27, in Spanish, in Newark, Delaware.

Si has realizado resoluciones anteriormente, pero no has tenido xito, no te preocupes. Ten paciencia. Recuerda, cualquier cambio positivo requiere tiempo y paciencia.

New You Starts Now

When January rolls around, many Americans make one or more New Years resolutions. Over a third of adults plan to quit smoking, lose weight, get out of debt, stop forgetting stuff, and make other lifestyle changes.
But many people have a hard time sticking to their New Years resolutions. Studies have shown that by the end of January, about a third had given up, but another half was successfully working on their goals into March. That shows the longer you stick with it, the more apt youll be successful. Change of any sort can feel like youre swimming against the tide. Many people are afraid of New Years resolutions because they feel they are not adaptive enough to succeed. If youve made resolutions before but didnt succeed, dont worry. Yesterday is history. All that matters today is where youre headed in 2013 with your resolutions. The new you starts here, right now. Improving your memory Have you ever wished you could remember things better? Maybe you are experiencing CRS or cant remember stuff. The good news is you can resolve to have a healthier brain in 2013 and stop CRS. An improved memory is a goal on many peoples wish lists as they age. If you are worried about losing your mental capacity as you get older, dont let that hold you back. You can improve your memory and stop experiencing CRS or that nagging feeling of not remembering stuff. Many people would like to improve their memory but they dont know where to start. One good way is by recognizing that achieving New Years resolutions gives you a fresh opportunity to change your life. Some ways you can boost your cognitive skills are by taking classes, engaging in regular social activities, playing board games and taking up new hobbies and learning new skills. Better Results Start Here Change often comes from deep inside and from a strong commitment to wanting to change. Here are some ideas for improving your memory and making changes. Write your goals downon paper or on your computer. Theres an old adage that if your words come out of the ends of your fingers youll be more apt to focus on them. Share resolutions with others. Tell people about your goals so you have accountability and support on your side. Focus on the benefits of achieving the resolution. Instead of worrying about not meeting your expectations, tell yourself how proud you are to be taking the first steps toward success. Set specific goals that are reachable. Instead of setting a goal of losing 50 pounds, break it into smaller steps toward the bigger goal. Give yourself a hug for each step that you accomplish. Remember, you can change, it is possible. Change can happen when you see the value in the journey of the change, not just change for change sake. The Choice is Yours As youre reading this you may feel this year youre ready to make changes, and you would like to improve many things in your life, including having a healthier brain. Keep in mind that change requires a leap of faith that you can become the person you want to be. Here are some other ways you can step up and attack your goals this year: Set up a supportive environment. Make sure the activities and people close to you support your goals. Pinpoint potential obstacles, and then work around them. If your goal is to lose weight but your lifestyle means you eat out a lot, look at online menus before you go out. You can decide on healthy choices before you get swayed by less healthy options at the restaurant. Recognize forks in the road. There will always be opportunities to get off course. Step back, take a deep breath and choose the fork that keeps you on track. Have patience. Remember, any positive change takes time and patience.
