Finalizando el mes de noviembre quisimos presentar a nuestros lectores la historia de una familia que tom la decisin, muy razonada, de adoptar a un nio. Nos parece que conocer la experiencia de otros nos puede animar a ver las cosas desde otro punto de vista, como por ejemplo que no hace falta ser ricos o miembros de la farndula como Angelina Jollie y Brat Pitt para adoptar a un pequeo, lo que hace falta es pensar es que por ejemplo en Delaware hay 90 nios que de alguna manera u otra han quedado sin sus padres biolgicos y estn viviendo en hogares de acogida temporal a la espera de una familia definitiva, que quizs pueda ser la suya. No hay nada ms importante que el amor, dar y recibir amor como un regalo de la naturaleza humana. Adems muchas parejas que no han tenido la gracia de poder engendrar sus propios hijos tienen la oportunidad de abrir sus hogares a unos nios que lo nico que necesitan es una oportunidad para tener un chance en la vida y se le abre un camino en este mismo estado donde viven para hacer su sueo realidad. Tambin en esta edicin compartimos con usted una vvida relacin de un colaborador espontneo que tuvo a bien enviarnos desde Guatemala un artculo sobre las consecuencias del terremoto de 7.5 grados en la cabecera del municipio de Tacan, parroquia de San Marcos, y como l mismo dice, hago esto con el propsito de despertar en los hermanos hispanos el deseo de organizacin y colaboracin puesto que es mi deber como sacerdote buscar vas o alternativas que puedan de alguna manera minimizar la preocupante realidad que estn viviendo nuestros hermanos que lo han perdido todo. Otro de los temas que tratamos en esta edicin, tiene que ver con la relacin de la comunidad con la polica y es que esta vez la polica del condado de New Castle quiere saber de que manera el pblico ve su trabajo y que como dice el teniente Rubn Martnez, Es importante que la comunidad participe en la encuesta para nosotros saber si los servicios prestados son adecuados o si tenemos que mejorar en algunas reas. Necesitamos que la comunidad sepa que la Polica del Condado de New Castle est comprometida a prestar servicios de alto nivel a todas nuestras comunidades y dependemos de sus sugerencias para mejorar nuestros servicios. Y como es fundamental perder el miedo a conocer al otro, tanto la polica como la comunidad deben tender puentes para encontrar un lugar comn, porque ambas estn formadas por gente comn y corriente. No menos importante es el tema de la formacin de liderazgo en la educacin en Delaware, proyecto que nos parece realmente valioso y que esta vez presentamos a travs de una conversacin con uno de los futuros directores de escuela en Delaware, Jesus Urdiales, quien en pocas palabras dijo que el espritu de este programa de entrenamiento de 14 meses no es otro que los jvenes tengan las herramientas para tener xito en la vida en todos los campos posibles, y que todos estemos aprendiendo continuamente, para que cada quien tome la vida en sus propias manos. Espero que disfruten de esta edicin, mientras celebramos en familia el da de Accin de Gracias. Wrapping up this month of November, we wanted to present our readers the story of a family that made the decision, very reasoned, to adopt a child. We believe that knowing the experience of others can encourage us to see things from another point of view, such as that one need not be rich or a celebrity like Brat Pitt and Angelina Jollie to adopt a child, the only thing you have to think about is that in Delaware, for instance, there are 90 children that in one way or another have lost their biological parents and are living in temporary foster homes pending a final family, that you could be your own. There is nothing more important than love, give and receive love as a gift of human nature. Also many couples who have not had the grace to beget their own children have the opportunity to open their homes to children that all they need is an opportunity to have a chance in life and a path opens to them in this state where they live to make their dream a reality. Also in this issue we share with you a vivid relationship of a spontaneous collaborator who saw fit to send us from Guatemala an article on the consequences of the earthquake of 7.5 degrees on the head of the municipality of Tacana, parish of San Marcos, and as he says, I do this in order to awaken the desire of collaboration and organization among Hispanic brothers, since it is my duty as a priest to find ways or alternatives that may in any way minimize the disturbing reality that our brothers and sisters who have lost everything are living. Another topic we deal with in this issue has to do with the relationship of the community with the police and this time, the New Castle County police wants to know how the public sees its job and as Lt. Ruben Martinez says, It is important for the community to participate in the survey for us to know if the services provided are adequate or if we need to improve in some areas. We need the community to know that the New Castle County Police is committed to providing high quality services to all our communities and that we depend on their suggestions to improve our services. And because it is essential to get to know each other, both the police and the community must build bridges to find common grounds, because both are formed by ordinary people. Not less important is the issue of leadership training in education in Delaware, a project that we deem really valuable and that in this opportunity we present through a conversation with one of the future school principals in Delaware, Jesus Urdiales, who in a few words said that the spirit of this 14-month training program is nothing but that young people have the tools to succeed in life in all possible fields, and that we are all learning all the time, for everyone to take their lives in their own hands. I hope you enjoy this issue, as we celebrate Thanksgiving among family.

El Proyecto de Liderazgo Delaware
El Proyecto de Liderazgo Delaware (DLP por sus siglas en ingls) es una nueva ruta alternativa aprobada por el estado al programa de certificacin para director de escuela para aquellos interesados en liderar las escuelas urbanas y rurales ms necesitadas de nuestro estado.
Los 14 meses de preparacin que reciben los aspirantes a directores est diseado especficamente para el complejo desafo de liderar las escuelas que sirven a comunidades de bajos ingresos, un componente crtico en la iniciativa del Departamento de Educacin de Delaware La carrera a la cima (Race to the Top). El Proyecto de Liderazgo Delaware (DLP por sus siglas en ingls) ha aceptado y colocado seis educadores sobresalientes en su segunda cohorte. Estos aspirantes a director sern rigurosamente entrenados para enfrentar los retos de dirigir una escuela de alta necesidad en Delaware. Cada uno ha hecho un compromiso personal con los estudiantes tradicionalmente marginadas de Delaware y est ansioso a continuar formndose para prepararse para este trabajo. Recientemente, la Junta Estatal de Normas Profesionales y la Junta Estatal de Educacin aprobaron la extensin del DLP para permitir la preparacin de un tercer grupo de lderes. Los seis graduados de la primera promocin han obtenido posiciones en Delaware luego de que completaron su programa en junio. Urdiales es nativo de Monterrey, Mxico y obtuvo una maestra en administracin y supervisin educativa en la Universidad de Houston, despus de prestar servicios por 12 aos como maestro bilinge en Houston, Texas. Cumpli recientemente los 37 aos y piensa que la labor de un director de escuela es la de facilitar que los educadores tengan las herramientas y la formacin adecuada para abrir las puertas a las nuevas generaciones, veamos. Yo me enter por internet que Delaware estaba implementando un plan de liderazgo que ya ha tenido xito en New York y decid que me interesaba formar parte de un proyecto innovador. No estaba contento con lo que aprend en la maestra y me haca falta la experiencia, de all que me puse a investigar sobre cmo mejorar y me encontr, por casualidad, con este proyecto en Delaware, y esto encaja en mi proyecto personal. Aunque el programa es una forma de obtener la certificacin como director o subdirector en el estado de Delaware, Urdiales lo ve ms como un programa que adems de teora basada en el cuestionamiento, es la bsqueda de que cada quien encuentre la manera de ser un lder innovador en el sistema educativo. De hecho la filosofa del programa reza que Como lderes escolares, los directores son la clave para el rendimiento general de la escuela y debe servir como catalizadores para lograr el tipo de cambio fundamental que muchas escuelas requieren. Urdiales se siente muy contento de estar ubicado en Eisenberg Elementary School en el distrito escolar Colonial y poder compartir con una excelente directora como lo es Kalya Reynolds, el hecho de que teora y prctica vayan juntas en este entrenamiento intensivo, me ayuda a aprender a ser un lder. Que los jvenes tengan las herramientas para tener xito en la vida en todos los campos posibles, que todos estemos aprendiendo continuamente, para que cada quien tome la vida en sus propias manos, eso es lo que cuenta. Y cmo piensa que se deba balancear la innovacin y propuestas creativas en un sistema de control que se aplica en la educacin del estado para medir objetivos y resultados? Aunque debe existir un sistema de evaluacin de lo que sucede en el saln, lo ms importante es ver cmo podemos a ayudar a los maestros a implementar un sistema creativo de impartir la enseanza. No podemos ver el sistema de evaluacin con una connotacin negativa, se trata de emplearlo para lo que se cre, que es mejorar la actuacin en general en la escuela y trabajar en equipo, explica Urdiales. La verdadera pregunta, agrega, es cmo te puedo ayudar para tengas xito en tu empeo. Siento que soy muy afortunado de tener esta oportunidad de aprender cada da, sobre todo visitando escuelas que me han sorprendido al ver el progreso de los nios en tecnologa, capacidad de comunicacin y comportamiento social, se es mi sueo, lograr una educacin innovadora, estoy seguro que lograremos cosas sorprendentes. Este programa est a cargo de Innovative Schools, con base en Wilmington, organizacin sin fines de lucro y centro de recursos para las escuelas pblicas, bajo la supervisin del Departamento de Educacin de Delaware. Innovative Schools ha modelado el Proyecto de Liderazgo Delaware basado en el Programa de Aspirantes a Director de la Academia de Liderazgo de la Ciudad de Nueva York. De acuerdo con un estudio independiente realizado por el Instituto de Poltica Educativa y Social en la Universidad de Nueva York, ese programa ha demostrado su capacidad para revertir el declive de escuelas de bajo rendimiento y reducir las diferencias entre pares en las escuelas de mayor rendimiento en los programas de ingls y matemticas en primaria y secundaria. The Delaware Leadership Project (DLP) is a new, state-approved alternate route to principal certification program for those interested in leading our states highest-need urban and rural schools.
The 14 months of preparation that aspiring principals receive is specifically tailored to the complex challenge of leading schools that serve low-income communities, a critical component of the Delaware Department of Educations Race to the Top initiative. The Delaware Leadership Project (DLP) has accepted and placed six outstanding educators for its second cohort. These aspiring principals will be rigorously trained for the challenges of heading a high-need school in Delaware. Each has made a personal commitment to Delawares traditionally underserved students and is eager to continue the training that will prepare him or her for this work. Recently the state Professional Standards Board and State Board of Education approved DLPs extension to allow for the preparation of a third cohort of aspiring leaders. DLP is an intensive, full-time, 14-month training program for aspiring school leaders, and is a key part of Delawares Race to the Top plan. The six graduates of the first cohort have obtained positions in Delaware since completing their program in June. All six will continue to receive coaching and support for the next two years as part of the project. Like the first DLP class, the second cohort was selected through a competitive application process. This second cohort of DLP aspiring principals represents the top 5 percent of applicants -- more than 100 applications were received for the second cohort. They were chosen using a multi-stage process that involved a written application, group interview and individual interview, with a rigorous scoring and selection process at each stage. Of these six exemplary educators, El Tiempo Hispano chatted with Jess Urdiales to learn more about this leadership in education project of Delaware. Urdiales is a native of Monterrey, Mexico and earned a masters degree in educational administration and supervision at the University of Houston, after serving for 12 years as a bilingual teacher in Houston, Texas. He recently turned 37 and believes that the role of a school principal is to help educators have the tools and proper training to open doors to new generations. I learned on the internet that Delaware was implementing a leadership plan that has been successful in New York and decided that I wanted to be part of an innovative project. I was not happy with what I have learned while studying my masters and I was lacking experience, so I did some research on how to improve and I found, by chance, this project in Delaware that fits my personal project. Although the program is a way to get certified as a principal or assistant principal in the state of Delaware, Urdiales sees it more as a program that besides theory based on questioning, is seeking that everybody finds a way to be a leading innovator in the education system. In fact the programs philosophy says As school leaders, principals are the key to a schools overall performance and must serve as the catalyst for achieving the kind of fundamental change many schools require. Urdiales feels very happy to have been placed in Eisenberg Elementary School in the Colonial School District and being able to share with an excellent principal as is Kalya Reynolds, the fact that theory and practice go together in this intensive training, helps me learn to be a leader. Having the youth have the tools they need to succeed in life in all possible fields, so that everyone can take their lives into their own hands, thats what counts. And how do you think innovation and creative proposals can be balanced in a control system applied in the states education to measure goals and results? While there must be a system of evaluation of what happens in the classroom, the most important thing is to figure out how we can help teachers implement a creative system of imparting education. We cannot see the evaluation system with a negative connotation, we must use it for what it was created, which is to improve the overall performance in school and work as a team, said Urdiales. The real question, he says, is how I can help for you to succeed in your endeavor. I feel I am very fortunate to have this opportunity to learn every day, especially visiting schools that have surprised me as I see the childrens progress in technology, communication skills and social behavior, thats my dream, to achieve innovative education, I am certain we will accomplish amazing things. This program is run by Wilmington-based Innovative Schools, a non-profit public school resource center, under the oversight of the Delaware Department of Education. Innovative Schools has modeled the Delaware Leadership Project after the NYC Leadership Academys Aspiring Principal Program. According to an independent study conducted by the Institute for Education and Social Policy at New York University, that program has demonstrated the capacity to reverse the decline of low-performing schools and narrow the gaps with higher-performing peer schools in elementary and middle-school English language arts and math. Un Punto de Vista A Matter Of View

Durante los ltimos veinte aos, me he preguntado de qu se trata este Da de Accin de Gracias?, y en el transcurso de mi investigacin, aprend muchas cosas. Antes de todo el comercialismo y las convenciones que se asocian a este da, se trataba de la naturaleza y de nuestro arduo esfuerzo. Me enter de que nuestros indgenas solan celebrar una especie de accin de gracias a finales de septiembre o principios de octubre. En ese entonces, se trataba de la ltima cosecha del ao antes de que la temporada de fro llegara. Ms tarde, llegaron los peregrinos que trajeron consigo muchas tradiciones y creencias diferentes. Ms tarde, a mediados de la dcada de 1900, el Congreso declar por que el Da de Accin de Gracias se celebrara el cuarto jueves de noviembre con el fin de impulsar la economa de nuestro pas. Esta semana, vamos a celebrar de una manera u otra la tradicin americana de este Da de Accin de Gracias. Esta ser mi casi tercera dcada de celebrar este da de fiesta y tengo que decir que en todos estos aos, fue en los ltimos seis aos que le encontr sentido a lo que estoy agradecida. A lo largo de los aos, he adquirido mi propia rutina en la celebracin de este da tan especial. Cuando me levanto temprano en la maana de ese da, inmediatamente siento el aroma del pavo que haba colocado en el horno la noche anterior antes de irme a la cama, esto realmente impregna el aire, recordndome que ste no es un da cualquiera. Preparo el desayuno, y despus de que mi familia est alimentada, entonces me siento y veo el desfile de Macys. Lo s, suena trivial, pero me encanta! Debe de ser la nia en m que lo disfruta. Despus de que el desfile termina, lo que usualmente sucede a medioda, es cuando comienzo a entrar en el estado de nimo de las fiestas. Debo compartir que yo no necesito un da especial del ao para recordarme que cada da encuentro cosas por las cuales estar agradecida, y este ao me di cuenta que estar sano, tener un trabajo que me proporciona un ingreso estable y estar rodeada de seres amados son bendiciones que damos por sentado hasta que una de ellas ya no est en nuestras vidas. Aunque mi vida est lejos de la perfeccin, es una vida maravillosa. Con sus altas y bajas, las lgrimas y temores, alegras y risas, todo me lleva de nuevo a las pequeas cosas que la vida nos puede traer y que tantas veces damos por sentado. Aprend que realmente ayuda a tener una actitud positiva sin mantener ningn rencor o ira y ser capaz de hacer limonada de limones, y cun dulce puede ser. Sabes de qu ests agradecido y por qu das gracias? Encuentras felicidad o alegra en las cosas pequeas? Happy Thanksgiving!
Being Thankful
For the past twenty some years, I have wondered what is this Thanksgiving Day all about and as I looked into it, I learned many things. Before all the commercialism and must haves that is now attached to this day, it was all about nature and our hard work. I learned that our natives used to celebrate a thanksgiving of sorts the end of September or the start of October. Then, it was all about the last harvest of the year before the cold season took over. Later, along came the pilgrims which brought with them many different traditions and beliefs. Later in the mid 1900s, it was declared by congress that Thanksgiving Day would be celebrated the fourth Thursday of November in order to boost our countrys economy. This week, we will be celebrating in one way or another American tradition of Thanksgiving Day. This will be my close to three decades of celebrating this holiday and I have to say that in all these years, it was in the last six that I found meaning to what I am thankful. Throughout the years, I have acquired my own routine on celebrating this special day. When I get up early in the morning that day, I immediately smell the scent of the turkey that I had placed in the oven the night before going to bed it, this truly permeates the air, reminding me that this is no ordinary day. I fix breakfast and after my family is fed, I then sit and watch the Macys parade. I know, it sounds trivial, but I just love it! It must be the child in me that enjoys it. After the parade is done, which is usually done by noon, is when I then start to get in the mood for the holiday. I must share that I dont need one day out of the year to remind me that every day I find things to be thankful for and this year I found that being healthy; having a job that provides a steady income and being surrounded by loved ones are blessings that we take for granted until one of them is missing from our lives. Even though my life is far from perfection, it is a wonderful one. With its many ups and downs, tears and fears, joys and laughter, it all brings me back to the little things life may bring that we so much take for granted. I learned that it truly helps in having a positive attitude without holding any grudges or anger and being able to make out of lemons lemonade, and how sweet tasting it can be. NOVeMBer iS NATiONAL DiABeTeS AwAreNeSS MONTh Diabetes is a disease that is affecting Hispanic of all ages, nationalities and sectors of life. It is possibly the biggest health concern facing the Hispanic community today, with approximately 11.8 percent of Hispanics having diabetes compared to 7.1 percent of non-Hispanic whites, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In other words, diabetes affects the Hispanic community approximately 1.5 times more than non-Hispanic whites. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and it is the perfect opportunity to learn more about the three main types of diabetes and the experiences that a few prominent Hispanics have had battling the disease. Diabetes is more prevalent in some Latin American nationalities than others. Nevertheless, the least susceptible ones develop diabetes at a higher rate than non-Hispanic Whites. According to the CDC, Puerto Ricans have the highest incidence with 13.8 percent, followed by Mexican-Americans at 13.3 percent, and Cubans, Central Americans and South Americans at 7.6 percent. Although diabetes can bring life threatening consequences to a persons life, approximately 85 percent of the complications that arise from diabetes, such as retinopathy, kidney damage, poor blood circulation and nerve damage, can be prevented by combining a healthy lifestyle, the appropriate medications and regular doctor visits, says Dr. Thomas Daz, Medical Director for UnitedHealthcare. People with diabetes can live healthy and productive lives if they are well informed and apply the appropriate care It is true that many Latinos fear the diagnosis of diabetes, which is unfortunate, because it does not mean they cannot live a fulfilling, healthy life. For example, three of the most prominent Hispanics have prevailed over the different types of diabetes. Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor; television icon, Don Francisco; and actress Salma Hayek have lead both successful careers and are living normal lives in spite of diabetes. Sonia Sotomayor The first Latina Supreme Court Justice was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 7 after her parents noticed that she was experiencing a number of symptoms such as unrelenting thirst and fainting spells. This type of the disease is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, but can develop at any age in life due to genetic or environmental factors. Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes, can result if your body is not producing insulin on its own. In this case, your body must receive insulin as a medicine every day. Without insulin, your body would use a different form of energy, which can lead to sickness, complications and even death in extreme cases. Unlike Type 2 diabetes, there is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes, said Dr. Daz. Nevertheless, appropriate insulin therapy and healthy lifestyle habits allow people that suffer from this disease to manage their condition and live long, healthy and productive lives. As Justice Sotomayor points out, one of the most important parts of managing diabetes is understanding your body and knowing the different ways you can manage your blood sugar effectively. Don Francisco For most of his life, Don Francisco feared that he would develop diabetes due to his family history and his lifelong tendency of being overweight. He was able to avoid developing the disease for many years, but at the age of 60 it became harder for him to manage and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes that makes me care more about my weight, be careful about my food intake, and be rigorous in practicing sports. Don Francisco Type 2 Diabetes While type 2 Diabetes is the only type of diabetes that can be prevented, it is the most common type, accounting for 95 percent of all diabetes cases. It usually develops due to old age, obesity, physical inactivity, or a history of gestational diabetes. The good news is that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by increasing physical activity and healthier eating habits, as was the case for Don Francisco. Most people that develop type 2 diabetes were prediabetic at some point and could have avoided the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their body weight and getting at least 25 minutes a day of exercise, suggests Dr. Daz. Pre-diabetes can be detected in a person 10 to 15 years before they develop diabetes. At this stage the body shows clues that can be used by your doctor to help you avoid developing diabetes in the future. According to the CDC, approximately 35 percent of Americans suffer from pre-diabetic conditions, putting 79 million Americans at risk of developing the disease. Sadly, more than 90 percent of them are not aware that they have it. Hispanics, in particular, have to pay closer attention since they are 66 percent more likely to develop diabetes than non-Hispanic whites and are less likely to visit a doctor. Salma Hayek Salma Hayek developed gestational diabetes during the pregnancy of her first child, Valentina. In September 2007, Salma gave birth to a healthy baby girl. If I had it to do over again, I wouldnt eat so much fruit at the beginning. I didnt know that eating fruit that is high in sugar is not recommended when you have gestational diabetes. Salma Hayek Gestational Diabetes Unlike other types of diabetes, gestational diabetes is not usually permanent, it occurs when women have high blood sugar levels during their pregnancy. This type of diabetes usually goes away after the mother gives birth, but women who experience gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), 2 to 10 percent of pregnancies report developing gestational diabetes and for Hispanic women the risk is even greater. New Survey available to the Public

The New Castle County Division of Police has instituted a web based survey the public can complete to express the experiences that they have had with the police department and 911.
The participant can select to complete the survey in Spanish at the beginning of the survey. In the constant efforts to improve service to the public, insight is needed to determine the Divisions strengths and weaknesses. This survey will capture important information that will be utilized to further enhance service to our communities. The survey is available under the Survey tab at the divisions web site, www.nccpd.com. The survey is free and anonymous. The Division encourages the public to complete this quick and easy survey. This evaluation of the service provided, will serve as a guide for the Division of Public Safety as it strives to provide continued excellence in policing. Estudiantes elegibles de Delaware podra ahorrar miles de dlares en matrcula de la universidad con el mercado comn acadmico
Ms de 100 universidades pblicas del sur del pas ofrecen tarifas de matrcula estatal para los residentes elegibles de Delaware que estn estudiando carreras que no se ofrecen en la Universidad de Delaware o Delaware State University a travs del Mercado Comn Acadmico (ACM por sus siglas en ingls). Esta asociacin ha ahorrado a los estudiantes de Delaware matriculados en carreras que no estn disponibles en su estado de origen un promedio de $ 13.000 en costos de matrcula de este ao, dijo el Secretario de Educacin Mark Murphy. Eligible Delaware students could save thousands in college tuition with academic common market
More than 100 southern public colleges provide in-state tuition to eligible Delaware residents who are pursuing majors not offered at the University of Delaware or Delaware State University through the Academic Common Market (ACM). This partnership saved Delaware undergraduates enrolled in majors not available in their home state an average of $13,000 in tuition costs this year, Secretary of Education Mark Murphy said. The Academic Common Market means Delaware students have the opportunity to study programs they may otherwise not be able to afford. The ACM is a tuition-savings agreement among 15 states that are members of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Public colleges in SREB states that elect to participate in the ACM select the baccalaureate and graduate-level degree programs they will offer. First professional degree programs such as pharmacy, law, dentistry and medicine, are not part of the program. Since Delaware joined SREB in 1998, the state has certified more than 1,000 students at more than 70 colleges to major in baccalaureate programs such as acting, architecture, dance, dental hygiene, filmmaking, fire protection engineering, forest resource management, hearing and speech sciences, industrial engineering and interior design. Masters degree programs have included architecture, education of the deaf and hard of hearing, journalism, library and information science, occupational therapy, public health and speech-language pathology. Doctoral students have been certified for the ACM in programs such as anthropology, audiology, occupational therapy and theatre design/arts administration programs. To date this year, 94 students have been certified for a total tuition savings of more than $1.2 million. In addition to the ACM campus-based programs, the ACM/Electronic Campus offers distance learning opportunities. There are two undergraduate and 20 graduate-level degree programs available to Delaware residents at this time. This allows working adults pursuing degrees -- such as a bachelor of science in dental hygiene, master of library science or doctor of nursing practice -- to complete their degree and receive the ACM tuition savings while remaining employed in their current job. Only Texas does not participate in the ACM/Electronic Campus. States participating in the ACM are: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. La Adopcin le dio un Nuevo Sentido a Nuestras Vidas
John Flores, su esposa Sadia y sus dos hijas Abigail y Sara, tan parecidas que parecen gemelas, explican porque decidieron adoptar al pequeo Lucas para que forme parte de su familia.
Cuentan que llegaron a Delaware por una invitacin a una boda a la que asistieron, les gust el estado, vieron que tenan ms oportunidad de comprar casa aqu, y decidieron mudarse, y esta familia venezolana fij su residencia en New Castle, Delaware el ao 2000. El padre de la casa toma la palabra para explicar que se sienten bendecidos por la familia que tienen y lo bien que les ha ido por estas tierras. l trabaja en servicio tcnico en exterminacin de plagas y ella trabaja en un banco, mientras que las chicas estudian octavo y sptimo grado. Se declaran cristianos en el ms extenso sentido de la palabra, no creemos que se deba hablar de religin en Cristo, l es uno slo. Las razones que les llevaron a adoptar son varias, una de ellas, la historia de la familia de Sadia, cuyo abuelo en Barranquilla adopt a ms de 8 muchachos sin importarle que no era un hombre de fortuna, slo vea que era necesario tenderle la mano a un nio que lo necesitaba; otra importante razn fue que Sadia no poda tener ms hijos despus de segundo parto y queran tener un varn en la casa, y finalmente el hecho de que una de las nias le plante a los padres que quera tener un perro o un hermanito, ellos optaron por el nio. Yo era un poco renuente a la idea, dice John, ya tenamos las dos nias y me daba temor el saber si podra amar tanto a un hijo adoptado como amo a mis hijas. Hasta que despus de varios aos tomamos la decisin. Fue algo que decidimos entre toda la familia. El pequeo Lucas John es parte de la familia, luego de que cumplieron con todo el proceso legal de adopcin, a travs de la Oficina de Nios y Familias de Delaware, el cual culmin el pasado septiembre ( tom 7 meses). Clases de pre adopcin, seleccin del candidato que buscaban que tuviera entre dos y cinco aos, no queran un beb ya que el trabajo no les permite dedicarle tiempo
completo, citas en la corte y estada provisional con la familia que se inici en febrero. Hay que verle la cara a John padre cuando cuenta que le ense a Lucas a orinar como lo hacen los hombres, se cre una complicidad entre ambos que es muy diferente, dice. El segundo da que Lucas me sinti llegar a visitarlo en la casa de cuidado que estaba, subi corriendo desde el stano, gritando dad, dad, y esa fue para m, la seal que me mand el seor para indicarme que ste sera mi hijo. El da anterior haba orado por una respuesta. Nuestro sueo es romper la cadena que Lucas trae en su pasado,

Dios ha querido que yo estuviera cerca de los habitantes de San Marcos el da en el que la terrible calamidad natural se ha abatido sobre su ciudad.
Un violento terremoto de intensidad 7.5. En la escala de Richter ha destruido las casas en ladrillos, las barracas ya en ruina, tiendas pequeas que eran el apoyo para algunas familias, las escuelas que haban sido construidas con grandes dificultades y las calles han sido literalmente rotas el movimiento de la tierra provocando profundos abismos y vas de agua. Ms que 60 personas han muerto y muchos son los desaparecidos. Afortunadamente los que participbamos en la asamblea diocesana no sufrimos ningn dao, dicha asamblea se suspendi e inmediatamente salimos del lugar y pudimos observar lo que ocurra por las calles de la cabecera departamental de San Marcos y el municipio de San Pedro.

Algunos, a causa del terremoto, han perdido a sus familiares pero el dolor ms grande ha sido sobretodo verlos escavar juntamente con los socorristas entre las ruinas con la esperanza de encontrar a sus seres queridos con vida. La preocupacin, la desolacin y el llanto ya han golpeado al pas, la labor misionera en este momento, en este lugar herido a muerte, se vuelve ms difcil cada instante. Acercarse a los hombres sentados sobre las ruinas de sus humildes casas, destruidas con aquellas pocas y pequeas cosas que tenan es realmente doloroso. No hay palabras que puedan dar consuelo, solo abrazos fuertes y solidarios, apretones que dicen: Yo estoy aqu porque Dios lo ha querido as y con ayuda de l yo los ayudar. La actitud de la gente frente al dolor es grande: nadie grita, nadie condena, nadie pregunta todos rezan, sumisamente y reunidos en grupos delante de los cmulos de ruinas, los cmulos de escombros, el montn de madera, de lminas y de mantilla, levantan a voz alta sus oraciones a Dios, solo a l suplican ayuda, imploran solo a l a fin que, a travs de la Providencia, pueda tocar los corazones de quienes tienen la posibilidad de poder ayudar para poder continuar con su vida. He sido invitado en estos lugares para evangelizar y para amar aquellos que me han confiado, pero enfrente de tanta consternacin necesito su ayuda, su intervencin. Hay una gran necesidad dentro de lo que puedo mencionar: el agua para preparar los alimentos, diferentes clases de medicamentos para poder curar los heridos, ropa, ropa de cama. Con los estadounidenses comprometindose a aumentar sus hbitos de reciclaje en el hogar y en el trabajo en el Da de Reciclaje en Amrica (ARD por sus siglas en ingls), no hay mejor momento para que las familias se involucren y se conviertan en guardianes del medio ambiente. El Da de Reciclaje en Amrica se produce cada 15 de noviembre y es la iniciativa anual de reciclaje lanzada por Keep America Beautiful, la organizacin sin fines de lucro lder del pas que rene a la gente para crear y mantener comunidades vibrantes. Recycling can be easy and fun for everyone in the family. With Americans pledging to increase their recycling habits at home and at work on America Recycles Day (ARD), theres no better time for the family to get involved and become better environmental stewards. America Recycles Day occurs every Nov. 15 and is the annual recycling initiative launched by Keep America Beautiful, the nations leading nonprofit that brings people together to build and sustain vibrant communities. Here are 15 small actions you and your family can take to renew your commitment to recycling for America Recycles Day and every day of the year! Did you know ? 1. Half is better than none. You may not be able to recycle your whole pizza box, but in most communities you can tear off the top (as long as its grease-free) and put it in your recycling bin. 2. You bet your bottle tops you can recycle them. The caps on your plastic bottles are recyclable, too. Empty your bottle, replace the cap, and recycle. 3. Plastic bag and film recycling: more than grocery bags. Along with plastic grocery bags, recycle the bags from your dry-cleaning, loaf of bread, and newspaper. Remember to take clean, dry bags to recycling centers or retailers with plastic bag recycling bins. 4. A trick up your sleeve. Paper cups arent always recyclable because of the wax lining, but dont forget to recycle the cardboard sleeve! 5. Look beyond the daily paper. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), paper and cardboard are Americas most recycled materials by weight. In addition to newspaper, most communities accept corrugated cardboard as well as cereal and tissue boxes. Some accept mail, catalogs and phone books. Make Recycling a Habit 6. Close the loop. The recycling process doesnt stop at the bin! After materials are processed and back on the shelf as new items, its up to you to buy recycled products. Look for products and packaging with recycled content (and efficient packaging) to do your part as a recycling-conscious consumer. 7. Recycle on the go. Keep two bags in your car one for your trash and one for recyclables. Pre-sorting makes it easier to transfer your recyclables into a recycling bin once youve reached your destination. 8. Recycling: its not just in the kitchen. Dont trash your detergent and shampoo bottles just because you dont have a bin in your bathroom or laundry room. Keep a plastic bag for collecting recyclables under the sink or take a few extra steps to put your empty bottles in the recycling bin. 9. Reduce and reuse. Minimizing the trash we generate and reusing products reduces our impact on the planet and our resources. For example, consider reusing that plastic bag. Earthquake Hits Guatemala

>Brother Christopher Posch, OFM A strong earthquake off the coast of Guatemala killed at least 48 people and trapped others under rubble on November 7, crushing homes and cars, destroying roads and forcing evacuations as far away as Mexico City. Many people remain missing. Many others have been housed in emergency shelters. Most of the dead were buried under debris in San Marcos state, a mountainous region near the Mexican border. Landslides triggered by the 7.4-magnitude quake blocked highways and complicated rescue efforts. It was the strongest earthquake to hit the Central American nation since 1976, when a 7.5-magnitude quake killed more than 20,000 people. service in El Quetzal. - At least 80 buildings, 8 education centers, and 3 schools were damaged or destroyed In La Reforma. -At least 510 buildings and 18 schools were damaged or destroyed and 3 schools are in risk of complete destruction. -At least 5,000 destroyed homes -Temporary Shelters set up in El Quetzal (14 shelters for 1717 people and 375 families); La Reforma (9 shelters for 2099 people and 605 families); and San Marcos (6 shelters for 661 persons and 153 families). -Most water distribution systems destroyed in San Pedro Sacatepequez More E-mails Sister Bernarda Rojas, Directress of Caritas wrote Marguerite Gomes of St. Matthew Church here in Wilmington: Thanks Margarita for your solidarity. The needs here are great. As a Diocese, we immediately prioritized our greatest needs: food, medicines, water, clothing, ponchos, and, of course, reconstruction. The Diocesan House suffered much and all or most of it must be demolished. Padre Ursulo Mejia e-mailed: Thanks for your prayers. Where they have been impacted most severely is San Pedro Sacatepequez, San Marcos, and San Cristbal Cucho. The pastoral agents were at a Diocesan Assembly. Thank God were alive, said San Pedro Sacatepquez resident Arnulfo Portillo. The Catholic Wilmington Diocese has had a long-standing solidarity partnership with the San Marcos Diocese. We have heard from many of our sisters and brothers. Correspondance from Friends Maryknoll Sister and Doctor Mary Lou Daoust, who runs health clinics, trains health promotors, and has visited the Wilmington Diocese on several occasions, e-mailed Mary Jo Frohlich: Unfortunately an earthquake struck here about 10:40 a.m. this morning. We were in San Marcos at a Diocesan Assembly when it hit and the ceiling panels started to fall. Looks like lots of damage in San Marcos itself. It may be a few days before we can do anything. Feria de Recursos para Familias Red Clay
El Consejo Consultivo de Padres del Distrito Escolar Consolidado Red Clay (RCPAC por sus siglas en ingls) fue sede de la sexta feria anual de recursos para familias, el sbado 17 de noviembre en la secundaria John Dickinson HS en el gimnasio de la escuela.
Asistieron ms de 1400 personas. Entre ellos muchas familias hispanas del distrito. Este evento familiar gratis y lleno de diversin invit a los estudiantes, sus familias y la comunidad a disfrutar de la oportunidad de aprender estrategias y recabar informacin sobre recursos que ayudan a mejorar el rendimiento estudiantil y contribuyen a un estilo de vida saludable. Personal de todas las escuelas de Red Clay y de la oficina del distrito, junto con agencias comunitarias locales y estatales proporcionaron ms de 115 exhibiciones que incluyeron oportunidades prcticas, exposiciones, recursos, juegos, regalos y refrigerios. La seora Mara Segura acompaada por sus tres hijos, estudiantes de Lewis Elementary, coment que esta feria le pareci muy buena porque se enter de muchos servicios de los que no saba nada antes de asistir a este evento. Mientras que Christine T. Miller, coordinadora del evento dijo que este ao logramos resultados excelentes, la respuesta tanto de la comunidad como de las agencias fue extraordinaria y logramos muy buenos resultados. El objetivo de este evento fue HACER DE LA EDUCACIND E TU HIJO UN PROYECTO FAMILIAR. Definitivamente haba algo divertido para todos!

Red Clay Family Resource Fair

The Red Clay Consolidated School Districts Parent Advisory Council, (RCPAC) hosted the 6th annual red clay family resource fair, on Saturday, November 17th at John Dickinson HS in the school gymnasium.
Over 1400 were in attendance. Among them, many Hispanic families of the district. This free, fun-filled family event invited students; their families and community to enjoy opportunities to learn strategies and gather information from resources that help improve student achievement and contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Staff from all Red Clay schools and the district office, along with state and local community agencies provided over 115 exhibits that includes hands-on opportunities, displays, resources, games, giveaways and refreshments. Mrs. Mara Segura, accompanied by her three sons, students of Lewis Elementary, said that this fair seemed very good because she heard about many services that she knew nothing before attending this event. While Christine T. Miller, coordinator of the event said that this year we achieved excellent results, the response of both the community and the agencies was extraordinary and we achieved very good results. The goal of this event was TO MAKE YOUR CHILDS EDUCATION A FAMILY PROJECT. There was definitely something fun for everyone!

Programado para abrir en el 2014, el complejo ser la sede de la asociacin de ftbol Central Delaware Soccer Association La cuenta regresiva para el comienzo del juego en el prximo complejo deportivo de Mid-Atlantic ha comenzado. La asociacin de ftbol Central Delaware Soccer Association se ha apuntado para jugar sus partidos en el complejo, que contar con 15 campos - incluyendo un campo de csped de campeonato iluminado con una capacidad de 1.500 - y un complejo cubierto. La instalacin de usos mltiples se convertir en un centro para ftbol, hockey sobre csped y lacrosse cuando est terminado y listo para jugar en el 2014. Game plan set in motion for Kent County Regional Sports Complex
Slated to open in 2014, complex will be home of the Central Delaware Soccer Association The countdown to game time at the Mid-Atlantics next marquee sports complex has begun. The Central Delaware Soccer Association has signed on to play their games at the complex, which will boast 15 fields - including a championship lit turf field with a capacity of 1,500 - and an indoor complex. The multipurpose facility will become a hub for soccer, field hockey and lacrosse when it is completed and ready for play sometime in 2014. We couldnt think of a more perfect organization to one day call this complex home, said Bill Strickland, president of the Greater Dover Committee. The CDSA is the premiere sports organization here in the heart of Delaware, and moving into the Kent County Regional Sports Complex will allow it to grow and have an even greater presence. The Kent County Regional Sports Complex, to be built on a 100-acre parcel donated by Kent County, will be a recession-proof economic driver that hosts at least 10 major annual sports tournaments, drawing players and their families from throughout the region. It is projected to have an economic impact of more than $18 million annually in Delaware. This vacant property were standing on now will one day be a place where kids from all over the region become leaders and heroes, said Alan Levin, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office. In two years or so, families will be talking about the next big tournament theyll be traveling to in central Delaware. This is going to be huge for tourism. The complex will also provide a boost for employment in Central Delaware. During the first year of the project, 180 construction jobs will be created, and more than 2,000 jobs will be created during tournaments and camps, which will equal 210 full-time continuing jobs, according to a study by the University of Delaware. This is a great day for Kent County, said Kent County Commissioner Brooks Banta. This complex not only adds an immediate boost to the community but also projects out to sustain itself through any ups and downs the economy might experience. A lot of people have put a lot of work into this project, said Sen. Brian Bushweller, the lead legislative supporter of the project since its inception. And although theres still work to be done, its clear now that we are moving forward. A drum line from Delaware State University provided the musical backdrop at Wednesdays event as players from the CDSA tried the field out and Milford High School cheerleaders showed their Delaware spirit. Olympian and Rehoboth Beach native Carrie Lingo, who played on the 2008 U.S. Womens National Field Hockey Team and starred at Cape Henlopen High School, was also on hand. She said that having a venue like the Kent County Regional Sports Complex around would have been huge for her as a young athlete. I would have been there every day, Lingo said. Not only is this going to boost Delaware sports and help the local economy, but local athletes are big winners as well. Meetings on the Kent County Regional Sports Complex began three years ago and, in July, the Delaware Infrastructure Investment Committee approved more than $3.2 million in state funding, which paved the way for the project to move forward.

El objetivo es insertar los nmeros en las cajas con solo una condicin: cada fila, columna, y caja de 9 x 9 debe contener los nmeros del 1 al 9 nicamente una vez. Qu puede ser mas simple?
