With the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday (February 13th) we, with Jesus, turn to Jerusalem and his cross. Lent carries interesting associations. Most people are aware of Lent--that its the 40 days, not including Sundays, before Easter. Most people are familiar with the tradition of giving something up for Lent. We learn these traditions from the story of Jesus in the wilderness where he fasted for 40 days in Luke 4:1-13. However, we do Lent--and Jesus--a disservice when we turn Lent into our work, what we give up. Lent is about remembering what Jesus took up for us, namely the cross. We remember that Jesus humbled himself to take on human flesh, the cross, and our brokenness. Lent is a time when we are called to turn and face the cross, a time when we are called to try and understand its complexity a little more. In so turning, in so understanding, we are called to return to God. On Ash Wednesday we will trace over our baptismal cross with a cross of ashes, acknowledging that we came from dust and to dust we shall return. Ashes are a sign of repentance (a word that simply means: to turn). Lent is a time of turning towards the cross, which means turning towards our brokenness, but ultimately, towards our healing and wholeness. It's in embracing our vulnerability that we become strong. It's in naming our shame that we gain courage.

Living the Story with Pastor Jeni

So what is the cross? In plain terms, we think of it as a sacrificial place. Jesus died for our sins. That's a good place to start, though we have to ask, did God need Jesus to die on the cross to forgive us, or did God use Jesus' death on the cross for us? I think it is the latter. Humans put Jesus to death on the cross, God raised Jesus to life. On the cross, God is willing to show us just how far he'll go to reconcile us, to bring us home, to give us life. The cross shows us definitively that nothing in all of creation can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8). Not bad choices. Not debt. Not cancer. Not poverty. Not our relationships. There is no place where God cannot go to bring life, not even in the midst of death. Make Lent a time of turning and returning: to God, to church, to worship. Let us all sit at the foot of the cross and give thanks to God who does not let sin, death, and evil have the last word. And because these do not have the last word in God, let us live so that sin, death, and evil have no words amongst us. To borrow from an ancient hymn: "All of us go down to the dust, yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia..." (ELW Hymn #223). In Christs love, Pastor Jeni

Over Coffee with Kris

When I was three, my brother told me to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. I have been told by parents at Rebels games that I am being too loud with my cheering; jokingly, I hope. I have nearly lost my voice yelling at the television during a Vikings game, knowing full well that they cannot hear me; but this runs in my family. My friends used to come over to my house to watch my mom, watch the Vikings, and my brother broke a ceiling fan jumping up and down watching a Vikings game. The Vikings needs all the encouragement they can get. I often want to go in their locker room during 1/2 time to pump them up. I like to encourage the Vikings. The act of encouragement is a Faith Practice. Jesus walked alongside His disciples. Jesus showed them the way, and by His attitude and actions He modeled for them how to live faithfully in the world. Jesus expects us to do the same way within the many communities of faith in which we live, such as our families, friends, and congregation. Philippians 2:5 puts it this way Your attitude should be the same as Jesus This Faith Practice calls for us to encourage each other to motivate, to console, and inspire each other to live like a follower of Jesus. The most powerful message we can give our neighbors and those we meet in life is the knowledge that Jesus loves them; Jesus forgives them, accepts them as the are, and is always generous and gracious. Everyone needs an encourager because everyone at some point or another will need encouragement. We need to walk alongside each other. When have you been encouraged by someone? What did it feel like? Were you surprised, uncomfortable? Grateful for what they had to say? Who is the biggest encourager in your life? What are some ways you can encourage others? In your family? At Glyndon Lutheran? In our community? What about the world? Blessings on the rest of your day, Kris
