hen she wasn't claimed by her
owner, Shelter Manager Megan
Padgett went about the usual steps to
prepare Kuki for adoption; She gave
her the standard vaccines, and evalu-
ated her temperament to determine
what kind of home would be a good
match for Kuki. Next, Megan would
have scheduled an appointment with a
vet to have her spayed but Kuki was in
heat, so she stayed at the shelter for a
little while waiting. As it turns out, that
wasn't the only thing that would delay
Kuki's re-homing; she was pregnant!
That's when maternity planning kicked in.
Missy LaPointe, expert foster volun-
teer, took Kuki home, where she settled
in for the rest of her pregnancy. "Kuki
was a good girl. She had a very quirky
personality," Missy says. "She was a
kleptomaniac. She would steal any-
thing that wasn't nailed down and hide
it in her bed." That included pieces of
paper (like the mail), rolls of tape,
shoes, pens, tape dispensers if it was
lost, Kuki's bed was the first place the
family looked. Fortunately she had
good, playful humor about giving up
her treasures.
On September 25, Kuki delivered
seven adorable, healthy pups, sur-
rounded by the LaPointe family. She
did a good job of raising her puppies,
and enjoyed vigorously cleaning them,
which often involved knocking them
over and rolling them around on the
floor. The LaPointes and family friends
did a great job socializing them, and the
puppies were all adopted into loving
homes. On December 16, Kuki found a
great home of her own with Ashley
Battaini. "Kuki was an early Christmas
present from my boyfriend, Steve. She
has wonderful manners and she learns
fast. Overall, she's a sweetheart and we
are so lucky to have her in our lives."
A dog arrives at the shelter and you
never know what's next. Sometimes
they're returned to their owner the very
same day. Sometimes, it's an adventure!

n early December, Charlie Salinetti
and Gabe Davis, along with all of
their classmates, were each given $5 by
their Craneville Elementary fifth-grade
teacher, Teresa Bills. The idea of
"Giving Project", funded personally by
Teresa, was to empower the kids to
make the world a better place. Each
were to choose a cause that had mean-
ing to them. Charlie and Gave knew
just what cause they wanted to support.
They both had family cats who had died
of brain tumors, and they decided to
help sick homeless animals in memory
of their pets. They chose the Sonsini
Animal Shelter as the beneficiary of
their efforts.
Charlie and Gabe contacted Petco to
ask permission to set up a table to sell
treats, and were give the go-ahead.
They used their money to buy supplies
to make pretzel rods, rice crispy treats
and cookies. "The staff at Petco was
great," said Charlie's mom, Betsy
Salinetti. "They took donations at the
register for people who wanted to
donate via credit cards." Including
sales and donations, they raised $280,
which they promptly brought to the
Sonsini Shelter. Missy LaPointe was
on duty at the shelter that day. "They
boys were very inspiring. They were
so excited to give the money for the
animals. They took a tour of the shel-
ter, and when one of the dogs returned
from an emergency vet visit, they
were glad that their efforts could help
fund his care."
Charlie and Gabe then created a
fabulous Power Point presentation to
show to the class and parents. "We
had a lot of fun doing this project, and
it felt good when we donated," the
boys reported.
It's just this kind of spirit that will
assure the care of future generations
of animals who need a little extra help.

ts hard to believe that Pet Partners, a
non-profit 501(3) organization, is
coming up on their 4th year and still
going strong helping area pet owners
who find themselves financially strug-
gling to care for their pets by offering
pet owners free pet food, arranging for
reduced rate spay/neuter for their pets,
offering assistance with basic veteri-
nary care costs and helping pet owners
find solutions for the needs of their
pets. I have been an animal advocate all
my life and what matters is keeping a
much loved animal in their home with
their family and not surrendered to a
shelter or rescue. Bette, my associate
and I have been joined be a number of
volunteers to continue to serve our sur-
rounding communities to help meet the
needs of pets and their owners. Pet
Partners is operated on a 100% volun-
teer basis. We have such a wonderful
base of dedicated volunteers who make
it possible to help pet guardians in
southwestern Massachusetts, northeast-
ern Connecticut and Columbia County
and surrounding regions in New York
State. We just couldnt do this without
our hard working volunteers. We have
pet food collection boxes placed in
businesses and banks throughout the
southern Berkshires in Massachusetts,
Litchfield County
in Connecticut and
nearby towns in
Columbia County,
New York that our
volunteers check
weekly and get that
food to our places
of distribution
which can be found
on our website:
www.petpartners-
berkshires.org
Besides helping
with the feeding of
companion animals
Pet Partners has
partnered with sev-
eral area veterinari-
ans to provide
spay/neuter at re-
duced rates to
those who would
not otherwise be
able to afford the procedure. Arrange-
ments must be made through Pet Part-
ners. Spay and neuter is the only way
to control any communitys population
of homeless and unwanted animals. In
addition, Pet Partners can provide as-
sistance with basic veterinary care costs
on a case by case basis.
The funding for Pet Partners comes
from gifts, grants and donations. We
place our canisters in businesses
throughout the tri-state area and pro-
vide an immediate opportunity for
community members to offer their fi-
nancial support for the organization. All
donations go directly for the care of the
animals. Donations can also be made
online or by mail through our donation

job was replacing 36 year old window and the work was seamless, the top of the line windows are

I
t was fixing to snow when I visited
Purradise in the late morning of De-
cember 29. But just as this animal shel-
ter strives to be a warm and inviting
place for humans, it makes sure to keep
its four-footed folks comfortable, too,
whatever the weather. When I arrived, a
humidifier was full steam ahead to keep
the kitties noses moist, and in the Sun-
shine Spa, a large electric heater was
making up for the skys not quite living
up to its potential. As noontime ap-
proached, most of the feline residents
had hunkered down for a nap, affording
me a unique tour of their preferred
sleeping arrangements.
In one shared condo, tortie Kate and
buff tiger-striped Allie were curled up
together, yin and yang style, on an ap-
propriately multicolored afghan. In the
tier above, the peach-colored ear tips of
Isabella, a muted tortie longhair, were a
perfect match to her white-and-peach
quilt. Across the way, Olive, an alert
tabby, played pat-a-cake with me from
within her condo, while sprawling on a
spotless white baby blanket folded to
kitty size. Next door, timid Molly
smiled in her sleep within an over-
turned cartonthe staff considerate of
her desire for privacy. A fluffy tan
fleece bed atop the carton offered alter-
native arrangements should she decide
to venture out.
In another condo, Gertie, her white
torso contrasting with a strikingly col-
orful calico head and tail, lay curled up
on a white fleece; while neighboring
fluffy Sweet Peas pink complexion
peeping through her white fur went per-
fectly with her pink quilt. Along that
bank of condos, chatty gray Thunder
had a thick, crocheted throw at the
ready for whenever he got around to
some shut-eye. And in yet another area,
the shy siblings all-black Dabby and
brown tabby Lizzie cat-napped on a
folded yellow blanket behind a
makeshift curtain (a bath towel) hung
across their condo to filter out light and
sound.
Over in the Sunshine Spa, black and
white Precious was more interested in
playing with the new toys and other
gear that Santa appears to have de-
posited in the sun porch just a few days
earlier. But I could see as well the addi-
tion here and there of extra fleeces,
mats, or towels on the already carpeted
cat trees, and extra linings of soft fab-
rics in the pet beds scattered about the
room, rounding out the early after-
noons visual concert of variations on
how and where to doze. Though still
wide awake, Precious, too, settled onto
a folded rug eventually.
All in all, Purradises snoozing kitty
population seemed happily unaware of
the ravages of the weather just outside
their front door . . . a blessing, indeed,
for many among them who had come to
the shelter as strays. Even as they lay
snuggled and safe in their myriad bed-
ding, we may well wonder how many
were dreaming of an even cozier place
ever to call their own.

G
azing into the large liquid eye of a
horse is one of the great pleasures
of working with these magnificent ani-
mals. Their steady gaze seems to be a
window into the soul. Horses rely on
their vision to scan their environment,
locate food, interact with herd mates,
and respond to our actions and com-
mands. Any injury to or disease of the
eye should be considered a serious
emergency requiring prompt evaluation
and treatment.
Signs of an eye injury may include ob-
vious swelling or bleeding, excessive
tearing or other ocular discharge, hold-
ing the eye fully or partially closed, a
cloudy appearance to the cornea, or
signs of spooking or acting head shy.
Eyelid lacerations
Lacerations of the eyelids should be
evaluated and sutured promptly, as de-
layed healing may lead to scar tissue or
eyelashes rubbing on the surface of the
eye. Also, whatever object damaged
the eyelid may also have scratched the
surface of the cornea, requiring addi-
tional treatment.
Corneal Ulcers/Abrasions
The cornea is the thin clear outer layer
of the eyeball. It acts as a barrier
against bacteria and debris. The cornea
is protected by the outer eyelids and lu-
bricated by the tear film. Corneal in-
jury (also called keratitis) can result
from foreign objects and other
scratches or contusions, and even some
viruses. Diagnosis is made by applying
a fluorescein stain which will outline a
defect in the outer layer.
Corneal ulcers and abrasions are
treated with oral anti-inflammatories
such as Banamine and topical antibiotic
drops or ointment. Atropine may also
be prescribed to keep the eye dilated
and to reduce pain. Occasionally serum
prepared from the horses own blood
can be applied to the eye to speed heal-
ing. Medications need to be adminis-
tered as often as possible (sometimes
up to 4-6 times a day initially) to be ef-
fective.
Multiple recheck examinations by
your veterinarian may be necessary to
monitor healing. A simple corneal ulcer
should heal within 5-6 days. If it be-
comes infected, healing can be delayed
up to several weeks or more. If the
ulcer is not responding to conventional
therapy, a fungal infection or other
complicating factor may need to be
considered.
Ointments containing a steroid such as
hydrocortisone or dexamethasone
should never be applied to a squinting
eye until a corneal ulcer has been ruled
out, as these medications interfere with
healing and may worsen the condition.
Equine Recurrent Uveitis
Equine recurrent uveitis (ERU), also
known as moon blindness, is a painful
recurring inflammation of the eye that
can eventually lead to blindness. While
certain infections such as Leptospirosis
(and even the cycles of the moon!) have
been implicated, the condition is
thought to be largely immune-mediated
and may have a hereditary component.
Certain breeds such as the Appaloosa
and bald faced horses may be predis-
posed.
Signs of ERU include sensitivity to
light, squinting, tearing, and a blue or
white appearance to the cornea. While
there is no cure, early recognition of
flare ups and prompt initiation of treat-
ment can help to control the disease.
Treatments include oral anti-inflamma-
tories such as Banamine or bute, and
topical corticosteroids such as dexam-
ethasone or prednisolone. More ad-
vanced treatment options include the
surgical implantation of a cyclosporine
releasing device.
Special masks providing UV protection
may also provide benefit in reducing
ocular sensitivity (www.guardian-
mask.com). However, even with dedi-
cated lifelong treatment blindness of one
or both eyes may still eventually result.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most
common tumor of the eye and sur-
rounding tissue in horses. It is though
to be related to exposure to ultraviolet
light, and occurs with greater frequency
in bald faced or light eyed horses.
Tumors appear as pink, fleshy masses
on or near the eyelid or conjunctiva. Di-
agnosis is made by biopsy, and treat-
ment selection depends on size,
location, extent of invasion, and the
owner's financial constraints. Options
include surgical removal of the tumor
followed by cryotherapy, intralesional
chemotherapy, laser therapy, or radiation.
Untreated SCC in horses can invade
local soft tissues, the bony orbit, and si-
nuses, necessitating enucleation (surgi-
cal removal of the eyeball and
surrounding structures) or even eu-
thanasia.
Eye conditions can look very scary at
first. Call you veterinarian right away
if you suspect any of these conditions.
Sedation and pain control may be
needed to allow for a full evaluation to
determine a diagnosis, prognosis, and
treatment plan.

Last time we talked about
real leather and its bene-
fits for our furry family
members. This month we
get into imitation leather
or as folks in the industry
call it- faux leather. Faux
leather has gotten a bad rap in the past.
We remember Naugahyde, the less than
desirable faux leather that peeled and
cracked while maintaining a really fake
plastic look. This couldnt be further
away from todays amazing options for
faux leather. Most faux leathers can
save you money, clean easily and fool
your friends! Faux leather for paws,
claws and fuzz- NOT FAUX PAS!
Bonded Leather: Bonded leathers are
processed or recycled leather scraps
that are bonded to vinyl or
polyurethane. It varies in percentages
of 5%-50% real leather. As compared
to real leather, it is lower in price and
can be cleaned with soap and water.
Bonded leather is resistant to fading,
unlike leather, but it will soften and
wrinkle similarly to leather. Bonded
leather showcases the advantages to
both leather and faux leather with a
moderate price tag. Besides its being
easy to clean, bonded leather wont
hold odors like fabric can and pet hair
doesnt attach to it. Some bonded
leathers are so realistic that even the
pros are unable to discern the difference.
Faux Leather: This is the closest
cousin to the old Naugahyde, however,
now they are made of more flexible and
durable materials like vinyl or poly-
ester. Most modern faux leathers have
cotton backing which also makes them
more breathable, too. These as not
prone to crack or peel and are super
easy to clean. Faux leathers can be
cleaned with soap and water or com-
mon non-abrasive household cleaners
and are resistant to stains. They will
not hold odors and pet hair doesnt get
embedded. Faux leather can look like
the real thing, too, however it doesnt
soften and wrinkle like leather or
bonded leather.
Microfibers: Microfibers are a poly-
ester fabric that has a finish to protect it
and create a leather look. Most leather-
like microfibers will duplicate the
suede or nubuck leather look. Since
suede and nubuck leather are very easy
to stain and also have premium pricing,
microfiber offers an budget-conscious,
easy to clean product that gives the
same feel for those of us that actually
LIVE in our furniture. Microfibers can
be spot cleaned and also steam cleaned.
While being much more durable and
cleanable than suede and nubuck
leather, they can attract and hold pet
hair. While it can easily be wiped off
with a damp sponge, I wouldnt suggest
a white microfiber sofa with a black
cat. Also, because it merely disguises
itself as leather and is actually a fabric,
it can hold odors like a fabric.
Turn your furniture from a foe to faux
with bonded leather, faux leather or mi-
crofiber. Relax, enjoy and snuggle up
in FUR-niture that will maintain with
ease for your whole family! Faux
leather isFOR PAWS!

F
or centuries, creatures of the night
have been feared and maligned due
to the secretive nature of their world of
darkness. We tend to fear and recoil
from what we cannot see or understand.
However, many ancient cultures recog-
nized the similarities between man and
bat. The expressive facial features
along with their mammalian nursing
created a kinship and respect for bats
that caused many tribes around the
world to revere them as gods who could
protect them and bring them good luck.
Unfortunately, many of the negative
attributes and myths regarding bats
still exist today and are passed from one
generation to another. Instead of mar-
veling at their niche in our ecosystem,
they are shunned and often times killed.
We are in the midst of the worst disas-
ter to affect wildlife in recorded history:
white nose syndrome. The fungus, aptly
named Geomyces destructans, has
caused the death of almost 6 million
bats in North America since its discov-
ery in 2006 and the devastation contin-
ues. It is believed that the fungus was
transmitted to the US from Europe
where it causes no harm to the resident
bats. As our world continues to become
smaller, we are struggling against inva-
sive species every day, as anyone deal-
ing with Asian bittersweet or multiflora
roses can attest to.
The benefits that these flying mam-
mals have provided us are enormous,
yet mostly unsung. The volume of fly-
ing insects that are consumed nightly
during warm weather are in the tons,
many of which are related to crop dam-
age. The free pest control they have
provided us is estimated at $50 million
per year. As a result of this, we can ex-
pect the agricultural giants to increase
the pesticides and insecticides that are
applied to our food to counteract the
loss of our bats. Disease spreading in-
sects are also consumed by these insec-
tivorous bats that most are starting to
realize as a benefit that they took for
granted.
Bats are not the nasty attackers that
they are often portrayed as. Most often,
they will not respond to human pres-
ence unless touched, which of course is
ill advised as it is with any wild animal.
Being intense creatures of habit, it can
be difficult to persuade them to move to
a different location. Making adjust-
ments and modifications to live in close
proximity can be challenging, but not
impossible.
Most photographs of bats are taken
during flight showing the bats mouths
open, displaying their sharp teeth. What
they are doing is echolocating, not
threatening. Echolocation is how most
insectivorous bats avoid predators, nav-
igate and hunt for food.
We need to put an end to the myths
and mistreatment of these essential
creatures by teaching our children the
truth about bats. Our children trust us to
teach them what is real, not what is
false and fabricated out of fear.
Tabithas Tale is a story of Tabitha, a
big brown bat, who along with her
friends loses their home to develop-
ment. As the bats try to find a new
home, they encounter a man that does
not understand bats and so evicts them
from his home. As he starts to learn the
truth about bats, he sets out to bring the
bats back to his property.
With colorful, eye-catching illustra-
tions, the children in your life will
enjoy and cheer for Tabitha and her
friends while learning valuable infor-
mation about bats.
Tabithas Tale can be purchased
through www.bats101.info for $12.00.
100% of the profits go directly toward
the rehabilitation of wildlife.
Ms. Bowen will be reading and sign-
ing copies of Tabithas Tale at the Wild
Birds Country Store on Main Street in
Great Barrington, MA on Saturday
April 27th at 11:00AM and 1:00PM
where the book is also available. A free
personalized Bat Buddy sticker accom-
panies the purchase of every book.

whole-foods for healing
six week course designed fo give you confidence in the kitchen
so you can eat your vegetables and love them too.
february 5th - march 12th, every tuesday 7-8:30pm

I took Katherines 6-week "whole-foods for healing" course and learned more in those
6 weeks than I have known for most of my adult life! Katherine encourages you to trust
your own intuition to create new taste sensations. Since taking her class, I have insti-
tuted more whole-foods into my diet. I even bought a rice cooker! I look forward to the
next round of classes. She is one smart cookie."
Joanne Billow, Marketing Services, Pittsfield, MA
Katherine fine-tuned and refined my already sound cooking skill set. I was hungry for
the change as I am sensitive to oil and gluten and have to look out for my health. Its
been so satisfying and wonderfully healthful to learn how to cook all over again.
May Acton Adams, Creator/Founder of LLewellyn Clothing
My children are observing (my) transformation and it's making a difference for the entire
family. Doing this program helped open the dialogue about how we nourish (or not)
ourselves.t My family sees the difference eating whole foods has made for me and are
naturally making better choices for themselves.

W
hen it comes to Lexi, the 3-year-
old chocolate lab/terrier mix, still
at the Berkshire Humane Society since
April 2012, everyone asks why she has-
nt been adopted yet? Roberta
Townsend, Canine Supervisor at BHS,
thinks she is still at BHS because of her
exuberant energy: Her first contact
with potential adopters does not always
go well said Roberta. She is very
playful and strong, and her over-excited
nature can scare an adopter away.
When you meet Lexi the second time,
you will see the Lexi we know and
love. adds Roberta.
Lexi needs someone who looks be-
yond the initial greeting because she
loves to play and play some more. She
is an excellent ball retriever. She is
very smart and needs to be both physi-
cally and mentally stimulated. The
BHS Staff will be careful to match Lexi
with the right adopter. This is a process
called Meet Your Match.
Lexi is not fond of cats or small chil-
dren and is selective about her canine
companions.
The staff and volunteers at BHS have
been creative in trying to present Lexi
in a variety of situations to show her
personality. A video The Twelve Days
of Lexi, a spoof on the Twelve Days
of Christmas can be viewed at
www.berkshirehumane.org was re-
leased during the holidays to help her
find a forever home. Volunteers took
Lexi to the Blessing of the Animals at
St. Helenas Chapel in Lenox this past
fall, and she has an official blessing
document that hangs proudly near her
kennel.
BHS will not give up trying to find
Lexi, or any other adoptable animal, a
permanent loving home, no matter how
long it takes. This is our philosophy
and everyone at BHS works to see that
all our homeless pets get a second
chance at love.
Interested adopters can contact the
canine staff at 413-447-7878, ext. 26
or by email at rtownsend@berkshire-

berkshire animal d.r.e.a.m.s
O
n New Years Eve, right before
locking up and heading home from
Animal DREAMS, I took a moment to
gaze at our feline rescue center at 441
North Street in Pittsfield. I felt a surge
of gratitude and pride at the image my
eyes took in, in the soft light of early
evening. The cats awaiting adoption
were resting peacefullyin their fleece
beds, or on their carpeted perches, some
curled up together--the picture of con-
tentment: Gideon, our store greeter, res-
cued from inside a barn that collapsed
after a heavy snowfall two years ago,
and who metamorphosed from a starv-
ing, aggressive, terrified throw-away
pet to the biggest lovebug one can
imagine. Blueberry, blind, but gentle
and sweet, waiting for someone to give
her a second chance. Long and lanky
Stretch, rescued from a very rough
neighborhood in Pittsfield where he
was eating out of dumpsters, who blos-
somed into a doting babysitter to our
rescued kittens. Isabella, abandoned
with her 3-week old kittens, so thin and
flea-infested that she didnt have
enough milk for her kittens, or the
strength to move them to safety. Berry,
Dusty and Rusty, brothers orphaned
near a farm, crying from some bushes
for their mother who would never re-
turn. And Noelle, found on Christmas
Eve desperately trying to get into build-
ings on North Street, crying and pan-
icked as traffic raced around her. (We
made sure that she had a room at the
inn as long as she needed one.) For
each of these cats, the days of hardship
on the streets were now overnever
again would they
experience cold,
fear, hunger, thirst,
or the perils of pro-
creation.
One year ago, the
storefront Animal DREAMS Feline
Rescue now occupies was an empty
spacewe had just signed a lease, and
were slowly moving in. It was a leap of
faith, one we simply had to takeor
else remain stuck in a holding pattern
of limited growth and public awareness.
After 12 years as a grass-roots, home-
based non-profit organization, we fi-
nally had a place to call home, and the
cats we rescue had more visibility. Its
important that people recognize the de-
gree to which we help a significant pop-
ulation of cats that typically fall through
the cracks, and that most people are not
even aware of. These are called com-
munity cats: those living among us in
our communities, but on the fringes
they are the abandoned pets that have
been dumped and are now fearful of
everything, including humans, and who
struggle to survive as they are forced to
search for food, water, shelter, warmth,
and safety. Community cats also in-
clude cats that are feral: born wild and
unable to adapt to indoor life. No less
deserving to live, they are the ones we
humanely trap and have
spayed/neutered/vaccinated (TNR) and
then returned to their home area
(colony) to be cared for by commu-
nity volunteers. (Many of our adop-
tions are kittens that were born in the
wild but captured early enough to be
tamed and
b e c o me
g r e a t
pets.)
And so,
gl anci ng
back before turning out the light on
New Years Eve, I saw a welcoming,
nurturing place, filled with plants and
happy cats, its walls adorned with stun-
ning photographs of songbirds and rap-
tors by Stephanie Lawton (an Artswalk
exhibit.) Our Christmas tree was encir-
cled by a huge assortment of gifts, all
generously donated for the cats we res-
cuecat food, fleece blankets, toys, lit-
ter, soft beds, envelopes with
contributions, and holiday cards with
heartfelt sentiments of gratitude for the
work Animal DREAMS does in the
communities of the Berkshires. Even
our office furniture, computers,
couches, oriental rugs, and the focal
point of our location, Julias Place
(an enclosed, giant floor to ceiling cat
play area for cats)all of these too
were donated by our volunteers, or in-
dividuals and businesses in Berkshire County.
What a difference one year made, and
what a difference Animal DREAMS
makes in the lives of community cats.
So as I turned off the lights, locked the
doors and headed into the night, and
into 2013I felt such gratitude and ap-
preciation for the astonishing year we
had had. Good night kitties. Happy
New Year! 2013 is going to be an amaz-
ing year!
