1.0

PURPOSE The purpose of this document is to provide the guidelines to the Testing Engineer to check the quality of the insulation by determining the leakage current resistance of the insulation.

2.0

SCOPE This instruction applies to the in-house & final testing of the HV Transformer.

3.0

RECORDS Following items are recorded in the test reports: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Terminals between which the resistance is measured. Measured Resistance. Test Voltage. Temperature of the Transformer. Polarization Index.

4.0

ASSOCIATED DOCUMENTS The standard applicable for this test is IEC 60076-1.

5.0

DEFINITIONS Absorption ratio/Polarisation Index Ratio of the insulation resistance taken at 60 sec to the insulation resistance at 15 sec is known as absorption ratio or polarisation index.

6.0

RESPONSIBILITY Tests will be performed under the supervision of Testing Engineer/Sub Engineer of I & QC section of HV Transformer department.

7.0

EQUIPMENTS/INSTRUMENTS Following equipments/instruments are required to perform this test. - Megger (MIT 520) USA-make or equivalent, 250 5000 V dc with connecting cables.

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS 1. Correct voltage range should be selected. 2. Winding under test should be thoroughly discharged after test by shorting it to earth. 3. Bushings should be clean and free from dust.

10.0

INSTRUCTIONS The insulation resistance is measured by means of an insulation resistance meter of a voltage 1000V dc or 5000V dc. Each winding is measured separately by connecting the

voltage between the winding to be tested and earth. During this test the body of the transformer is completely earthed with the earthing terminal. The resistance reading at 15 sec and 60 sec is taken after connecting the voltage between: i) Insulation Resistance between HV-LV. ii) Insulation Resistance between HV- Earth. iii) Insulation Resistance between LV- Earth. Furthermore, the ratio of the insulation resistance R60 to the insulation resistance R15 gives the absorption ratio of the winding which should be greater than 1.2. For comparison R60 / R15 = 1.2 @ 20 C may be considered

11.0

CALCULATIONS Polarization Index (Absorption Ratio) = Value of the insulation resistance at 60 secs (R60) Value of the insulation resistance at 15 secs (R15)

12.0

TOLERANCES Minimum Insulation Resistance >= 1000 M @ 1 minute.
