Abortion legalization in Venezuela

Abortion is a very controversial subject in many aspects. Some people agree that it should be legalized and some others do not, this opens a debate where a large quantity of factors must be considered and each one of these are argued by representative parts of different points of view. Currently abortion is illegal in Venezuela, except in those cases where the mother is in serious danger because of the pregnancy. It must be considered that in Venezuela there are no reliable statistics data about the number of abortions performed, this is because, since abortion is illegal, it is rarely recorded. In Venezuelan society there is a large religious influence. As a result, abortion is often viewed as a crime. Furthermore, different religious followers and atheists pose another point of view than viewing abortion as a crime. Therefore, the arguments that are considered the most important are going to be examined here, after an extensive literature review. When people thinks about abortion, most of them think that it is a sin or a crime to take away a humans life, even when it is a fetus. The main organization against this kind of practice is The Church, who believes that only God has the power to give and take life. Children are raised with these thoughts, because Venezuela is a very religious country. Therefore, those people who defend this point of view argue that abortion violates the God-Given right for a creature to live. Some not as religious people are still not agree with abortion. They argue that its legalization would be a bad example for young people, because in countries where abortion is legal, the age average for people to make abortion is 11 to 19 years old. According with these opinions, legalizing abortion in Venezuela would bring as result a non-viable family planning solution, and then we will get immerse in a uncontrolled situation, because the number of people making abortions will raise up. They think that a person must assume full responsibilities for their actions, because 92% of the people practicing abortions just do it considering things like their studies, jobs or lifestyle. And these reasons are not considered good enough to make an abortion. (Source: Abortion and Women's Health, New York and Washington, D.C.)

On the other hand, there is a large part on the population that believes abortion should be legalized but considering the social circumstances in which abortion is going to be made. A smaller percent of the population believes that it must be completely legalized no matter in what social circumstances the abortion is going to be made, because that is a mothers decision, and she must be free to take it and decide what is best for her and her life. People who defends abortion legalization argue that the currently laws has been written under religious considerations and they dont include the requirements of the whole population. Therefore, the currently law is discriminating to that people who dont share the point of view in which abortion is a crime. According to this opinion a child must not be brought to this world if its mother is not prepared in a psychological, social and economic way, so the mother is on her right to decide what the best choice is. This way a child could be avoided from suffering. At the end of all, when this subject is examined, it is understandable how difficult is for the Venezuelan society to accept the abortion legalization. A research shows that the mean reasons why a woman could not be sure about abortion, is because of religious and moral things, thats why it is understandable to think that if abortion is legalized or not, it wont change if mother will make abortion or not. Because a woman actually does not think about legal stuff, she actually thinks about religious and morality. However, some parts of the population which are in favor or against, agree on certain points like: if under any circumstances abortion is legalized, this must be legal until a certain number of moths since the conception; that abortion must be done only if serious and critical circumstances are affecting the mothers life; if the pregnancy was result of a rape. And all of these factors must be analyzed and determined by a qualified doctor.
