Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus

Nature Physical form Shelf life

Anionic vinyl polymer, mineral oil and nonionic surfactants in water Low-viscosity, readily pourable suspension with ammonia odor Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus can be kept in the original sealed containers at temperatures between >0C and a maximum of 40 C for up to 12 months. Partly used containers should be kept properly closed and used up as soon as possible. Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus must be stored away from frost. It must be protected from temperatures above 40 C. The product must be stirred before use. Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus may become paste-like if stored at temperatures below freezing point. However, it can be restored to its normal low viscosity by warming and stirring, and can then be used as before. Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus tends to form a visually imperceptible sediment on prolonged storage. Stirring is therefore essential before beginning a new drum or removing product after prolonged storage.

Application
Fields of application and finishing effects Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus is a synthetic thickening agent for pigment printing. The product swells rapidly in water and has a powerful thickening action. It has very little influence on the handle of the printed fabric. Owing to its low inherent viscosity and high swelling rate in water, Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus is also ideal for the supplementary thickening of print pastes. Pastes that have been thickened up with Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus do not require filtering again before use. Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus allows simple preparation of print pastes that have very good running properties and produce brilliant prints with excellent contour definition. Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus is also suitable for solvent-free application in pigment discharge printing and in pigment resist printing under reactive dyes. The guideline recipes below are based on drinking water of average hardness and are designed to give a viscosity of approx. 80 dPas (= poise) (as measured by the Viscotester VT 02 supplied by Haake Mess-Technik GmbH & Co., Karlsruhe, Germany). Guideline recipe The following recipe is intended as a guide and should be adapted as necessary to suit local conditions (e.g. water hardness, processing conditions, etc.) ... 80 180 25 32 1000 g g g g g water Helizarin Binder ET ECO Luprintol MCL Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus

A still smoother fabric surface can be obtained by adding approx. 5 g/kg Luprimol SIG or Luprimol SE. This addition also produces a further improvement in fastness (particularly the fastness to dry rubbing) and has a positive effect on the handle and brilliance of the prints. An addition of approx. 7 10 g/kg Helizarin Fixing Agent LF is advisable to improve the fastness on substrates composed of synthetic fibres and their blends with cellulosic fibres, and on regenerated cellulose. Helizarin Fixing Agent LF can to a certain extent also improve the fastness on cotton (especially the wet fastness).

Preparation of stock pastes

If necessary, first add an antifoam to the water. Then, one after another, stir in the Helizarin binder, the Luprintol product and, if necessary, Helizarin Fixing Agent LF and Luprimol SIG or Luprimol SE. These are followed by the Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus. Stir the mix with a high-speed stirrer until the thickener has completely swelled (approx. 8 10 minutes). The pH of the print pastes should be at least 8. Lower values must be corrected by adding ammonia. The viscosity of solvent-free pastes can be increased by stirring Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus directly into the paste. If the viscosity is too high, it can be readily reduced by stirring in small amounts of an aqueous solution of diammonium phosphate or ammonium sulfate.

pH Viscosity

Fixation

When formulations containing at least 20 g/kg Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus are fixed with hot air (5 minutes at 150 C), it is not necessary to add an acid donor. Under these conditions, Lutexal Thickener HIT Plus itself acts as an acid donor, ensuring crosslinking of the binder. However, if superheated steam (at least 160 C) is used, the addition of small amounts of an acid donor may be an advantage (e.g. 4 5 g of an aqueous diammonium phosphate solution 1:3 per kg print paste). Hot-air fixation produces the optimum standard of fastness. The following temperatures and dwell times are recommended: 4 5 min at 150 C or 3 2 min at 160 170 C. Fixation with superheated steam should be carried out for 5 7 minutes at a minimum of 160 C. This method also produces a good standard of fastness but somewhat below that of prints fixed with hot air.
