ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING

The Annual Congregational Meeting for the purpose of reviewing 2012 and looking ahead to 2013 will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. There will be a carry-in dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting will follow.

THOUGHTS FROM BRAD

I heard it said years ago, that the church is the only institution that exists with the non-member in mind. Whether you agree with that statement or not, it seems that many times a church fellowship becomes solely member-focused. Theres a big danger in that. If a church only focuses on itself, eventually the church will not exist. David Platt in his book, Radical, writes We are settling for a Christianity that revolves around catering to ourselves, when the central message of Christianity, is actually about abandoning ourselves. In our efforts to be more strategic in reaching the unchurched of our community, we are making plans to alter the way we do our second service. These modifications have been prayed about and discussed as the elders and staff plan for what we anticipate being an exciting future of Fifth Avenue. We will share more about this at our upcoming congregational meeting on February 6th. We do not know what the future will bring to this church. There are no guarantees about anything we try to accomplish, but we are called to be faithful! So our mantra will be Whatever it takes. As Paul wrote Become all things to all men that we might win some. (1 Cor. 9:22-23) You may not understand why change is necessary, but we have to have the mindset that all people are important enough to save. That means I must surrender some of my likes in order for new people to know Jesus. Please pray for our church daily and may we abandon ourselves as we make the church all about Jesus. In His Service, Brad

BITS FROM BRO. DAVE

PERSONAL NOTE: A total of 23 seniors

enjoyed our trip on Tuesday (1/29). God blessed us with great weather. It was an enjoyable excursion to Wooster, Smithville and Orrville. I want to thank Dick Shumaker for helping with the driving. Watch for information about our next adventure.
SUNDAY EVENINGS IN THE SANCTUARY:

We have just two messages left in our current series from II Corinthians. This week (Feb. 3), the theme is Marks of a Carnal Christian, from II Corinthians 12:11-21. The final message, on February 10, will be Standing For The Truth and the text is found in II Corinthians 13:1-14. If you are not involved in a small group on Sunday evenings, I encourage you to join us. Communion is available for those who desire. Also, remember that we now have activities for children each Sunday evening. I want to remind our participants that we will not be meeting for either, the 10 AM or 6:30 PM sessions, on February 6 or 13. We will resume classes on February 20. At that time, we will be examining chapter 4 of Ephesians. We do invite you to be a part of these studies.
WEDNESDAYS:

It certainly appears that todays teenagers will have a hard time telling children of their own what they did without!
FINAL THOUGHT:

Love God and Love People!

Last week in Childrens Church, we learned about Noahs Ark. We imagined what it would be like if one of our neighbors did something as crazy as building a huge boat in the back yard. Sometimes we as Christians, do things that others think are weird or not normal. I think that is what God has called us to do! We are not of this world, so why would we act worldly? Let us do crazy things for Christ! Genesis 6-9:17 Hannah

SCOTTS THOUGHTS
John 13:34-35 (NIV) 34 A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. We make love a complicated thing at times, and yet at its core it is very simple. When we love someone, their needs become more important than our own. This finds its fullest expression in Gods love for us which was so great that it prompted Him to give Jesus so we could be saved. To the unchurched world around us, what are we known for? Is it the reflection of Gods love? Does the world know that we are followers of Christ because we love them more than we love ourselves? God has given us the responsibility to go into all the world and make disciples. This passage in John tells us we will be known as disciples because of our love. How are we doing at the primary job God has given us? What would our worship gatherings look like if our primary purpose is holding Jesus high so that His love can reach the unchurched around us? Is it time to forgo our own comfort so that we might become all things to all people that we might win some? Jesus left the comfort of heaven and associated with sinful man so that we might be redeemed. How can we claim to be followers of Christ and not be willing to go where He leads? Outreach is messy. It is uncomfortable. It is our calling.

Library Spotlight
My Heart Christs Home by Robert Boyd Munger and Carolyn Nystrom is a Mommy and Me Book in our Childrens Library. This book tells the story of a boy named Peter and his week spent with Jesus. Peter enjoys being with Jesus and sharing his activities with Him. But then Peter is faced with a decision. Should he show Jesus the secret thing he has hidden in his closet? In His Steps by Charles M. Sheldon is a book in our Adult Library. In His Steps is about a church group who decided to do each days tasks as Jesus would do. They were to do this for one year, but it went way beyond that and influenced the lives of all those who met them, forever. Visit our libraries and check out a good book!

Core Values...
Values central to the life, mission and vision of Fifth Avenue Church of Christ are:

Christ-Centered Worship
We make it a priority every Sunday to celebrate Jesus through our music. (Romans 11:36-12:1-2). We focus on Jesus through grace-based preaching and teaching & understand the Bible is our authority (2 Timothy 3:16).

Church Health and Biblical Balance

Church health becomes reality when God's people seek harmony & live consistently. We expect every member to protect the unity of Christ's Church. (Romans 12:16; 1 Peter 3:8)

Global Evangelism
We are constant to our founding call to worldwide evangelism, proclaiming to all that Jesus Christ is the Savior, Healer, and Soon-Coming King (Acts 20:27).

Fellowship and Ministry

After people begin their journey with Jesus, we will equip them to find a ministry based upon their strengths. We want everyone to serve in some capacity. (1 Corinthians 12:12-27) We also want His church to be the living evidence of His love and power to the world.

How Can I Respond Today?

At FACC we look to the Bible for guidance on all issues. We believe that Gods Word is clear concerning what a person must do to become a Christian. Trust that Jesus can bring you to salvation. Turn (repent) from the sin in your life. Confess your desire to make Jesus the Lord of your life. Be baptized (immersed) in water for the forgiveness of sins and to receive the Holy Spirit into your life. To make this life decision for Christ, we ask that you come forward during our commitment song at the conclusion of the Sunday message. Baptized believers are welcome to become members at FACC by coming forward on Sunday morning or by seeing our Senior Minister to discuss this further. We ask that you complete a series of Curious classes to help you better understand what you are committing to as a member.

Discipleship
We do not want you to "get religion" here at Fifth Avenue Church of Christ in Lancaster. We are all about teaching you that Jesus seeks a daily relationship with Him through a life of obedience. In other words, we want to see the things you are taught actually change your lifestyle & your daily decisions.

Social Conscience
We place high value on the sanctity of human life, of Biblical marriage and morality, and we welcome ethnic diversity (Isaiah 56:7; Philippians 2:15-16).
