Theoretical Framework

The Roy Adaptation Model Theory was the theory that we chose in our case presentation. We choose this because according to Roy, a stressor has the potential to disrupt the integrity of the system. The output of the system is the adaptation level, which indicates how the individual, family or group is coping with the stressor. In Roys Adaptation Model, it asserts that an adaptation level can be observed in the behavior of the individual or group. If the child was able to cope with the stressor of leukemia and its treatment , the adaptation level will be integrated indicative of social competence and greater participation in peer activities (activity level). If the child is not coping effectively with leukemia and its treatment, the adaptation level will be compromised. This ineffective adaptation level will be manifest as increased anxiety or disruption behavior. In Roys

Adaptation Mode, the four overlapping modes; self concept, interdependence, physiological self and self role function interacts with each other and are part of adaptation level. Disruption in physiological self (functional status) due to leukemia overlapped with the concept interdependence mode ( family function). We think that positive self- concept will be an important factor and primary motivator of behavior. Children who are adapting well to a stressor of leukemia and its treatment will positively interact with the environment by engaging in age- appropriate activities and displaying social competence . The greater the disruption on physiological self (poor functional status). Functional status correlated with lower family support , higher anxiety of increase behavior problems. and
