ARMED CELL 4 Edited by Brian Ang armedcell@gmail.com armedcell.blogspot.com Cover images by Coupe Front: Crying Room Back: Agitate coupeletat.org Physical edition of 100 Free ARMED CELL seeks to publish what is urgent and necessary in poetry and poetics. It insists on militancy working for the emancipation of humanity in its entirety (Alain Badiou) to confront the notion of there being at present too much anti-capitalism (Slavoj iek) and not enough direct action against capitalism (or whatever other name we might want to give to the process dominating world history today) (Giorgio Agamben). ARMED CELL seeks relationship with those engaged in research and practice with this matrix of concerns, in order to be, like Lenins pre-revolution withdrawal to study Hegel, a site for the study necessary for executing political actions. ARMED CELL 4 was first distributed at the Lyn Hejinian, Joshua Clover, and Brian Ang reading at the Studio One Art Center, Oakland, California, 1 February 2013. ARMED CELL 5 will appear in August 2013. Submit cover images and writing by the end of June 2013 for consideration.

from FAILCORE Love embraces me like terrorism on the underground: immediately I'm ahistorical, deflected out beyond the image of deceitful ire to passionate redress: what is awful is also epitome for trust in harm, your baked-on shoulder pads disintegrate the street level clearing: get way out now my past lives mitigate resentment stealing pony juice form a paki shop round the corner: your understanding's not to blame here, but your composition is. from FOOD APPLE Mark Stroman, a death row inmate with a regular blog on this site, complains of being fed pancake sandwiches, three pancakes and two pieces of bread with nothing in between. (Pancakes are served quite frequently, reads the TDCJ Web site. Most offenders who are released find humor in remembering how many times they ate pancakes. Stroman, at least, isnt laughing.) Although the prison spokesman didnt believe in the accuracy of Stromans description of the pancake sandwich, Clark did say peanut butter sandwiches could be served exclusively three times a day for the duration of the lockdown. A nurse who had worked in the Texas penal system said inmates would also receive fruit. But a former corrections officer, Debbie Bone, now a secretary in the Texas criminal defense law firm Habern, O'Neil and Pagan, recalls fruit being rare, typically limited to holidays such as Thanksgiving or Christmas. In general, fresh fruit like an apple or orange is not on the menu because prisoners make wine out of it TAILS Fontenot guided us through the Angola Prison Rodeo when we showed up for the event in April. She's right. Alongside the rodeo, some 43 inmate organizations had set up food concessions, started doing some down-home cooking and sold their Southern delights to the hungry, hopped-up public. The inmates are preserving culture from prison, she said. They kept a unique beloved part of Louisiana culture alive for people who had traveled all across the world to come and see this wild rodeo show. It was ironic to see how much of our culture had not been lost because so much of our culture happens to be in a maximum security prison. The Lifers Organization had the snow cone booth. The Toastmasters made crawfish etouffee and boudin balls. The Latin American Cultural Brotherhood did shrimp po-boys. And the Angola Men of Integrity sold funnel cakes. Dozens of traditional dishes are prepared and

sold inside this fertile prison farm. Nearly all the ingredients are grown on the grounds. The man selling snow cones is in for rape. The man selling pig tails kidnapped his girlfriend. The guy selling the Tornado Potato is in for life. LUNCH Friday lunches were a casualty of the departments decision to save money on gas and other costs by scaling back the prisoner work week from five eight-hour days to four 10-hour days, said Calvin Brown, Georgia Department of Corrections Deputy Director of Facility Operations. He couldnt say how much the state is saving. Barbara Helie, whose 25-year-old son Nicholas is serving time for armed robbery in Valdosta State Prison, said he would go hungry without the roughly $60 a week she puts into his account to buy instant soups, cheese, beef sticks and other snacks at the prison commissary. CUPS Formerly Federal Prison Industries, UNICOR employs 20,000 prisoners some at just 23 cents an hour to build products for the home, office, and battlefield. Besides the Patriot missile, what else is there out there for people who want to Buy Convict? A tour of UNICOR's website yields six must-have items: Riot Helmets, Fingerprint Kits, Loud Speakers, Salt Fog Chambers, Plastic Forks and Cups, Flood Lights. RHUBARB Son of Sam built my retirement, he said. I told the superintendent, 'Man, he was the best thing that ever happened to me.' I did 26 overtime shifts in one month watching Son of Sam. Nobody else wanted it. Mr. LeFevre, 53, is one of the last of the old-time superintendents, a civil servant who has risen through the system since 1953. He became superintendent of Clinton 12 years ago. My goal in life, he said, was to be a state trooper. Mr. LeFevre and his wife, Margaret, live in a ranch-style house provided by the state high on a hill overlooking the prison. You have to be an optimist, he said over a lunch of bacon

burgers and strawberry rhubarb pie. You have to believe that people are capable of being good. On the weekends, an hour or so before visiting hours begin at 8:30 A.M., the relatives of inmates arrive on buses. It is a hard journey, and not cheap. For $40 round trip, they board the buses in the city around midnight and ride all night. After visiting hours end at 3:30 P.M., they get back on the buses for the return trip. SINGLE FISH Kawame's Queen 07-29-2009, 11:00 AM I usually bring $20 for the token machine unless I have alot of tokens left from the last visit. We had the same problem as you two with the machines being filled with meat. One time I got there & there wasn't a single fish sandwich, grilled cheese, or plain pizza in any of the machines!! I saw an inmate with a bunch a wings, cheeseburgers, & 2 grilled cheeses. I went over to him & said can I please buy those two grilled cheeses off you cuz my man don't eat meat & there is nothing left in the machines for him. He said his girl is up at the machines right now & they are hers or he would sell them to me. So I'm sitting down waiting for my man to come, all mad thinking that lady could go buy a loaf of bread & some cheese when she leaves & make herself five grilled cheeses! Then she walks over to me & says my man said you want to buy these cuz there's nothing for your man to eat. I thanked her & felt bad for thinking what I was thinking before she came over to me. It's not like she knew my man wasn't gonna have nothin to eat when she bought them. Right after she walked away the lady sitting next to me said I heard that lady say your man don't eat meat do you want to buy this fish sandwich off me. When our visit was over & I was leaving I saw this C.O. that grew up in the same hood as my man & always works in visits. I asked him would he please ask the guys when they come to fill the machines to put more fish, grilled cheeses, & plain pizzas in them. He said he would & told me the days they come to fill them. That was a few months ago, I visit him twice a week & always go on the days they fill the machines so there is always stuff for us to eat. CAKE Its All New 03-14-2009, 06:55 PM

John Mejias Prison Cake By : John Mejia Former Inmate in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice First you will need to have these following items in front of you purchased from your Unit Commissary. 1-2 packages of duplex cookies (any flavor desired) 2-Candy bars 2-3 chick-o-sticks 1-Commissary Bowl 1-Commissary Cup 1-cup of powdered Milk or hot water Once you have the following Items you are going to have to separate the cookies from the icing by scraping it off with a spoon. Next when this is done you set aside the icing and use your cup to crush the cookies into a powder ,then add cup of powdered milk and stir until dissolved all you do next is cover and set aside for 2-3 hours. Next you need to mix the icing with warm milk until thick. Dissolve the candy bars and add to the icing mixture. Crush the Chick-o-sticks they will be for the topping . After your cake has set for the 2-3 hours you can then pour the icing mixture over the cake as well the crushed chick-o-sticks. Now all you have to do now is to enjoy your cake! CUSTARD Food in prison is a part of imprisonment, a part of that aspect of prison policy that addresses the question of what kind of a man will be released into society once his sentence is done. The kitchen at the prison speaks to that notion. On the whiteboard in the pastry area, there are recipes for sponge cake, custard, cookie dough, shortbread it all has a softer domestic feel to it. __ carinas 11-28-2010, 03:48 AM

with Christmas around the corner i would like to know what happens with the inmates? i know that there are no visits Xmas Day at Dillwynia but do they celebrate it at all? a Christmas meal? some Christmas cheer? do the Salvation Army do anything for them? T_T 11-29-2010, 04:26 PM hi carinas i know the salvation army do distribute small gift parcels to the inmates i know where my hubby is they are locked in their wings most of the day due to staffing issues but apart from that same old same old i was pleased to read of your daughters result with her recent sentencing day and i see that you are counting the days Larra 12-01-2010, 05:29 AM As well as what T_T has said, my son also got some sort of pudding with custard and ice cream. And I think either socks or a notepad from the Salvos. And the early lockdown due to limited staff. And where he was, there were no visits on public holidays. POTATOES On Sunday, the AJC reported that the 1,900 Clayton inmates have been eating cold meals for five weeks because of broken kitchen equipment. Five weeks ago, officials deemed the jails three large kettles used to cook rice, pasta and potatoes unsafe to use because of broken equipment. The jail has also been operating for about a year without four stoves and three large skillets, which all broke down, food services manager Ricky Jordan said. Food vendor Aramark, which runs the kitchen at the jail, is working to heat some food in the sheriffs dining area, Jordan said. POTATOES Towery met with his attorneys Thursday before the execution began. The execution was scheduled to start at 10a.m., but his attorney's visit ran long and the executioner discovered

he had to insert a catheter in the femoral artery, suggesting that they could not raise a vein in his arm. The execution began at 11:17 a.m. Towery looked to his family and attorneys. In his last words, he apologized to his family and to the victims. He talked about bad choices he had made. Then he said, as he appeared to be crying, I love my family. Potato, potato, potato. His reference to potatoes was a message to a nephew who witnessed the execution, and referred to the sound made by a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Towery's attorney, Dale Baich, said it was Towery's way of telling his nephew that everything was OK. ROAST POTATOES DalesDeb 04-03-2006, 11:56 AM Have I planned his day home???? DEMOCRACY IS NOT FOR THE PEOPLE

In the authoritarian future of the comic book Judge Dredd, the story Letter From a Democrat (1986) depicts the eponymous law enforcer slaughtering a pro-democracy terrorist group, warning, Democracys not for the people. Josef Kaplan reorients these political dynamics by using the statement as his books title paired with its cover image of a similarly faceless law enforcer immolated by protesters in a 2011 Greek austerity protest. In our contemporary subjugation of the state to global capitals crisis, actually existing democracy is not operating for the interests of the people: this crisis is the context for Kaplans book. The logic of the books pairing technique is extended by its two epigraphs from the seminal political philosophy of Aristotles Politics positing the organic political development of society and Roberto Bolaos Amulet describing a historical retrieval by the contemporary imagination. This relation between historical tendency and contemporary conditions is continually enacted throughout the book. The books first of four sections, Tilt-Shift, composed of twelve pieces, considers many of these relations by corresponding pairs and groups of pieces by technical and thematic complementarities. Tilt-Shift is a photographic technique for selective focus: ____________
Josef Kaplan, Democracy is not for the People, Truck Books, 2012. Free pdf at http://truckbooks.org.

the pieces are selective foci on their thematic interrelations, including extreme political action, spirituality, and robots. Tilt-Shifts first piece, The Epiphanies, is a consideration of political selfimmolations. It ranges from Thch Qung c, self-immolated in 1963 protesting the persecution of Buddhists by South Vietnam (Before closing my eyes, I call the venerables, reverends, to organize in solidarity to make sacrifices), contributing to the collapse of its Ng nh Dim regime; to the recent acts of Malachi Ritscher, self-immolated in 2006 protesting the war in Iraq (Since in our self-obsessed culture words seldom match the deed, writing a mission statement would seem questionable), having minimal effects, in contrast to Mohamed Bouazizi, self-immolated in 2010 protesting corruption in government (If you dont see me, Ill burn myself), catalyzing the Arab Spring. The piece invokes the locations of political self-immolations: In front of the Federal Building, in Los Angeles; Below Secretary of Defense Robert McNamaras Pentagon office; At a busy intersection in Saigon; In a room in a small hotel on Ly Tu Trong Street; On the University of Pennsylvania campus; In Saint Peters Square in Rome; On the side of the Kennedy Expressway, in downtown Chicago; on the Champs-lyses, before the offices of Aeroflot; In San Sebastin; In Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India; Through the streets of downtown Seoul; In Wenceslas Square in Prague; In Main Square (now called Masarykovo nam). Extreme political action is everywhere historically sedimented and can erupt again, globally and locally: In front of a local government building. The Epiphanies complements are Shahada and Lay Down, considerations of historical spiritual visions and methods of divination respectively by a similarly highly processed rapid technique. In the relations between historical tendencies and contemporary conditions, The Epiphanies considers contemporary realizations to political action, many of them motivated by spirituality; Shahada considers historical spiritual realizations; and Lay Down considers primitive realization methods. Another complementary group is Gifts of Cloaks, Tributary, and Xenoglossy. This group uses a more uncreative technique of direct presentation of information than the previous group. Gifts of Cloaks is dedicated to Michael Scharf, developing Scharfs meditation on the claustrophobic political atmosphere of 2002-2003 and the invasion of Iraq in his For Kid Rock/Total Freedom (2007) with the pieces consideration of military robots and contemporary drone attacks: Since 2004, the United States government [] has used drones ([Unmanned Aerial Vehicles]) to execute a series of attacks on targets in northwest Pakistan [.] Under the George W. Bush administration, these controversial attacks were called a part of the War on Terrorism [.] Drone attacks have continued under the Presidency of Barack Obama. Tributary considers a Jewish political genealogy including Noam Chomsky, Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel, Stuart E. Eizenstat, Karl

Marx, and Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, including the contemporary relevance of considering Rabbi Loews folk terrorist golem which stop[ped] the persecution of the Jews by exploiting Eizenstats notion of the security gap: the states ability or inability to protect its citizens and territory from internal and external threats with Marxs there is only one means to shorten, simplify and concentrate the murderous death throes of the old society and the bloody birth pangs of the new, only one meansrevolutionary terrorism. Xenoglossy considers primitive human sacrifice. I Know a Man and For Love are prankish variations on Robert Creeleys austere existential and romantic themes. I Know a Man is a pulp science fiction variation on Creeleys existential theme using the late mass cultural celebrity Ryan Dunn as a robotic agent assaulting the President, enacting subversive transcendence with degraded mass cultural materials. For Love is an aristocratic fiction variation on Creeleys romantic theme satirizing its repressed race, class, and gender exploitations: Franny was a young kitchen maid found pregnant by one of the negro gardeners [.] However, at the birth, a startling and eminently useful thing was discovered: what had grown and been delivered, wrapped in the murky humors of her female cavity, was not a child at all, but an oversized bundle of golden coins [.] So a stable of young, vigorous negroes was procured, and Frannys pregnancies made regular. Gilgul uses the Kabbalistic concept of reincarnation to comically consider historical regicides, fused into a single King repeatedly murdered and reincarnated. Its complement is The President, which considers the history of threatening the President of the United States, fused into a single threatening subject to consider the contemporary composite national psychology: Then I tweet: [] The next American with a Clear Shot should drop him like a bad habit. 4get Blacks or his claims to b Black. Turn on him. The least interesting pieces for me, due to being limitedly interesting and lacking complements or being only vaguely complementary, were Grammarsci and Samizdat. Grammarsci is composed of the titles from Antonio Gramscis fourth Prison Notebook with minimal additions of grammatical and punctuation connectors to consider Gramsci and his diction. Samizdat consists of origami instructions for dollar bills to consider moneys fetish by emphasizing its material aesthetics. The books second section, Ex Machina, is dedicated to Joey Yearous-Algozin, whose The Lazarus Project (2011-present) examines media materials and brings everyone killed in the materials back to life. The section applies this concern with mortality in twenty pieces considering the first decade of Palestinian suicide bombings. In each piece, details of a bombing are uncreatively presented up to the detonating act, but suddenly interrupted by a deus ex machina from literature or film, saving all historical casualties: And all lived. By being unassimilable in the wide ideological range concerned with Palestinian

suicide bombings, the section interrupts ideological processes and enables renewed considerations of historical details. The repetition of the form emphasizes Palestinian suicide bombings interchangeability in ideological processes that effaces historical details. The books third section, Poem that is Pro-Heaven, considers historical beliefs about Heaven in Islam, Egyptian faith, Hittite faith, Judaism, and Chinese faith. It complementarily includes more materialist considerations of the Aristotelian concept eudemonia, a Greek term more accurately described as human flourishing; the etymology and semasiology of the word paradise; and the location of the Garden of Eden. Within this composite consideration is a consideration of spiritual beliefs ideological moral force, emphasis on praxis, and immanent indeterminacy: in order to enter Heaven, humans must first unlearn the moral nature of the gods [.] Humans unlearn a moral nature by doing immoral things. The books final section, Poem that is Pro-Violence, considers poets and artists contemporary participations in gentrification and prescribes their violent interruption of it: The best way for exploitation to be communicated to the wealthy is through violence. // If poets and artists were willing to corner, beat and mug rich people, and take their money, then poets and artists would no longer appear to the wealthy as a worthwhile investment strategy. In this self-critique of poets and artists in an emphasized poem, its prescribed forbidden praxis is more imaginatively realizable than the books considerations of selfimmolation and assassinating the President, and so that much more directly disturbing than such larger-scale political fantasies familiar in poets and artists milieus of unorthodox or anti-establishment political or social viewpoints: a contamination of the aesthetic by the intransigent Real at the level of everyday life. In its simultaneous considerations of history and contemporary conditions, Democracy is not for the People provides historical self-consciousness empowering to contemporary praxis, toward its made present global, national, and local conditions that desperately need to be changed.

DANIELLE LAFRANCE

THE WRITING OF FRIENDSHIP AND THE ANARCHO-ABJECT in Greek Tragedy, the Chorus provides a commentary and encourages the progress of narrative, the audiences needs, and desire are meant to be indistinguishable from what needs or interpretations are provided. By working the signifier the Chorus is not only a personification of psychosexuality but is the receptacle for impulses and drives. If the Chorus is a predisposed voice for the Public what are the ways in which it transmutates affect (i.e, political uproar, social unrest)? We wish to invert the speaking voice, the act carried out by the Chorus and the Public.

its difficult to enter into an authorial belief system, as per Bakhtin, as poet writing both from a place of murderous rage, on a self-reflexive note, and basing pseudo-subjectivities on intense relations. I disclose this simple factoid: it is okay if this Canadian poetic society no longer exists, if it cannot look at my face and allow me the honour of acknowledged pain. Pygaar warns us, just so everyone is clear - if we don't do this we lose our society status and there is then no more

does it become that friendship is solely based on a degree of usefulness...to the cause of total revolutionary destruction? If I do not trust you not to accidently shoot me in the foot, then perhaps we can only be friends. And, just amongst us friends, an open book, an open concept, here we find the titular subject, Pygaar, prying for architectural pursuits that directly confront the viewer.

here the narrative is told through an ego poetics, an application of procedure all excellent poets adhere to. Our poetics are nothing more than the thoughts of narcissistic subjectivity producers. Pygaar once said this during an interview, it seemed to me that the audience saw [these fucking poets] as being so up there that they wouldnt bother trying to check out what these guys had been reading, what they were referring to. The iconoclast culture in poetry reads too much like capitalisms avant-gardes and a filthy price tag on art objects. Why is that price tag on an art object reminiscent of Lady Macbeths blood stained hands? As always when cultural capital eclipses economic capital we wont go until we get some.

this artwork, New World Trade Center (New York, USA) by Vito Acconci, is currently for sale at Rove. Creating a space on the page to which the writer and the reader could move through, my first goal is not to build a condition that will surprise me. New light rail system never was in this glass villa. A New World Trade Centre riddled with protective holes. No need to bomb this majestic building, weve done the job for you. Lucerne tunnels from one side to next. Its an amalgamation of individualism and collectivism coming to a head. Enter with held hands, yet with held heads high. I remember who we were, caught between crosshairs, and that we had to be the same in order to see constructed difference. If it is necessary to build in order to test theory, what happens when other people show up to the party?

poetic language and the world of labour co-exist only if you can look me in the eye and see the dark circles that deter me from finishing this clause. Allow a greater prominence of face-to-face sympathetic interaction having, not another, because you are a whitemale-poet, does it mean our sides are covered even Steven. Is this not a liminal reckoning between non-sense and sense-making? Lots of people work in different ways, but there, in the pursuit of cultural capital, you cant cash it in but youre granted Real time. Three hours is precisely enough time to waste. Want to go back home. Something you can be sure that you believe in and keep other people out of. Trepidations at best. An amazing depressive and incurable optimist. Very auspicious if people want to leave home. The desire to go back home wants something you can be sure and that you can believe in. Its a task in trying to keep other occasional people out of your life.

open book and prying is so close to rape rape the ridiculousness of newspeak is often forgotten until a new Important Object finds its cue. Home-security, the kind of place you carry with you. People never have to go home if there are no boundaries to cross. Nomadism can be an exciting world. The opposite of home. Yet, the un-grounding of home is emblematic of the current phase of the socially rooted experience of the movement. The movement is going to face a direct fight with recombinant capital inside the seemingly private territory of the subjects psyche, where the recombinant capital currently accumulates its Power.

Pygaar defined poetry as doing nothing but losing using refusing and pleasing and betraying and caressing nouns, in opposition to prose, which is essentially and determinedly and vigorously not based on the noun. Caffeine pills, lemonade, peanut butter, nectarines, cigarettes. I catch myself talking crazy again and demanding something that is closer to nothing. It is when we find ourselves outside of bodies, communicating as though we mean it. Where the reification of objects replaces the amnesiac pace of production.

disintegration of every work of fine art and every book of poetry. What if, Pygaar, we could make a tiny house and it could represent scenes from a marriage? As in Nietzsches theory of aesthetics, these words are made for walking, and thats just what theyll do, one of these days these words are gonna walk all over you. Natural faces, vacated lips and eyes. I thought of your mother severe, intelligent, tight lipped in the presence of patriarchal humour giving birth to you.

lets agree it will never happen. Between this affect and that poem. I didnt even call the police! Suffer here in a peculiar kind of disruption. Abjection does not know how a certain theory will manifest itself politically. I saw that vacuous stare, as I bumbled my way through unhappiness at the caf. See you again sometime stranger, see you again in the traumatic nexus of future anterior. Language even in its most abstract still codes and classifies it's oriented to comprehension. Abjection as a way of calming, oddly enough, the trauma experienced when faced with the totality of life. Shitting corpse and milk skin vomit before you was you, was you. It operates in that murky place where I does not yet exist, and thus manifests as affect. Patrolling the border[s] between human and animal.

what does today mean? The indistinguishable exhaustion from the city is back in my soul, the panic erodes whats left of my tenor. A various circumlocution, a chastised reverie, leaves the work in stasis. Just as Pygaar noted, that deregulation means coming into fruition via its opposite, avant-garde and anarchist poetry still finds security via a lack of security.
